Major Duties and ResponsibilitiesActs as Umpire or Referee in various competitive athletic and sporting events. Determines validity of plays, goals, finish line order or out-of-bound plays.Observes actions of participants to detect infractions of rules.Resolves disputable matters and claims of rule infractionsDecides penalties according to established game rules and regulationsMay keep score, clock and/or record time.Confers with sideline officials to verify observation of playsPromotes good sportsmanship.Carries out a continuous effort to improve operations, work processes; and works cooperatively and jointly to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service. Performs other related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills And AbilitiesKnowledge of the rules of play for various sports activities.Ability to act swiftly and make judgments without partiality.Skill in problem-solving and decision-making.Skill and dexterity in handling sports-related equipment.Skill in oral and written communicationMinimum Educational And Training RequirementsKnowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.Physical RequirementsThe work is performed on the playing field. The employee will constantly keep up with the pace of the game by running up and down the court as needed. Employee must have a high degree of dexterity, and able to distinguish between shades of color. The work is typically performed in athletic facilities or outdoors.
