Job Summary: The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership across all port and terminal activities. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and profitable operation of marine terminals, berths, cargo handling, yard planning, logistics, and associated services. The COO drives operational excellence, enhances service delivery, and ensures the organization’s competitive positioning in global maritime and logistics markets.Key Accountabilities: 1. Strategic & Operational LeadershipDevelop and execute the overall operational strategy for ports and terminals in alignment with the company’s vision and long-term goals.Lead multi-terminal operations, ensuring optimal resource utilization, service reliability, and performance improvement.Oversee operational planning, port capacity optimization, and business continuity preparedness.2. Operational Performance & EfficiencyImplement best-in-class operational standards, including vessel turnaround time, yard productivity, equipment utilization, and safety KPIs.Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies.Lead automation, digitalization, and technology upgrades across terminals (TOS, smart port systems, robotics, IoT, etc.).3. Safety, Compliance & Risk ManagementEnsure full compliance with port regulations, IMO guidelines, and international maritime safety and environmental standards.Champion a strong HSE culture aimed at zero harm, zero incidents, and operational resilience.Identify operational risks and implement mitigation plans across terminals.4. Commercial & Stakeholder ManagementCollaborate closely with commercial teams to enhance customer satisfaction, optimize asset utilization, and support business growth.Develop strong relationships with shipping lines, port authorities, customs agencies, logistics partners, and government bodies.Support contract negotiations, concession management, and major commercial agreements.5. People Leadership & Organizational DevelopmentLead a diverse workforce across terminals, including operations, engineering, marine services, and planning teams.Develop talent pipelines and succession plans for critical operational roles.Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and high performance.6. Financial & Asset ManagementOversee operational budgets, cost control, and capital expenditure for equipment, infrastructure, and technology.Ensure efficient asset lifecycle management and maintenance strategies for cranes, equipment, and port infrastructure.Deliver measurable improvements in operational profitability and productivity.Qualifications & ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Maritime Studies, Engineering, Logistics, Supply Chain, or related discipline. Master’s degree preferred.5–10+ years of experience in ports, terminals, or marine logistics, with at least 5+ years in senior leadership roles.Proven track record in managing large container terminals, bulk terminals, or multi-cargo port environments.Strong knowledge of Terminal Operating Systems (TOS), port automation technologies, and modern port operations.Experience in managing high-budget CAPEX projects and organizational transformations.
