Position SummarySupervises the secure side of the Youth Services Center, including managing Detention Officer Supervisors, Senior Officers and Detention Officers. Reports directly to the Superintendent. Responsible for the security operation of facility as well as maintaining orderly management of day-to-day activities for detained youth. This will be implemented in such a manner as to assure their day-by-day and moment-by-moment basic physical, emotional, and psychological safety needs are met.
THIS COULD BE A EITHER FIRST OR SECOND SHIFT POSITION**Position ResponsibilitiesResponsible for all duties related to staffing, assignment management, and supervision of Detention Officer Supervisors, Senior Officers, and Detention Officers, with duties ranging from ensuring appropriate coverage of housing units to overseeing day-to-day scheduling of staff. Effectively and accurately communicate and interpret Center policies and other rules and regulations by means of enforcement of Center staff disciplinary measures. To assume responsibility for the coordination of all personnel performance reviews including evaluations and fact files for individuals under his/her supervision. Timesheet approval for those who report to them.
Approve time off requests. Responsible for assisting with training and re-training staff. Identifying areas for re-training. Working with the Field Training Officers to provide needed training. Conducts on the job training as needed. Assists with interview candidates for hire or promotion. To oversee residents’ Due Process staffing which review youth violations of rules and regulations within the Youth Services Center. To participate in case staffing which reviews the special needs of youth. Coordinates all facility-wide and unit searches. Ensures all such operations are conducted appropriately and on a timely basis.
Assists in the development, coordination and facilitation of security updates within each department of the Youth Services Center. Performs other related duties as assigned. QualificationsBachelor’s degree required with a minimum of 3-years proven supervisory experience. Consideration would be given to a non-degree candidate (in lieu of Bachelor’s degree) with at least three years of detailed supervisory experience and proven knowledge of the Youth Services Center’s organizational and security structure, confidentiality needs, and safety/security procedures & policies. All candidates should possess: Extensive knowledge of the functions of a detention facility and/or correctional entities.
Ability to successfully coach, counsel and develop subordinates. The ability to speak in front of a group. Ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the work of others. Experience with recruitment, training, disciplinary actions and performance evaluations. Must be knowledgeable of safety/security procedures & policies. Ability to implement policies in provision of security /safety for a locked facility. Ability to issue verbal instructions and communicate; both orally and in writing; including composing technical correspondence and reports effectively. Ability to physically intervene in physical confrontations to protect others from imminent harm. Ability to work directly with youth detained in the center.
Must be able to respond to critical incidents appropriately. Knowledgeable of crime scene preservation, conflict resolution, safety hazards precautions and crisis intervention techniques beneficial. Possess a basic knowledge of street slang and security threat groups. Must be able to multi-task, use time effectively, accept supervision and constructive feedback, make sound judgment calls /decisions in emergency situations. Comply with the Standards of Conduct, hiring requirements and all expectations outlined in the Marion Superior Court Policy Manual, as well as the practices/procedures of the YSC. Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment.
Ability to successfully complete and maintain all required training and certifications. This position is for either first or second shift. There is a shift differential for this position of $2. 50 additional per hour, which is approximately an additional $5,200. 00 per year for second shift. Salary for this position is based on applicable experience, including, but not limited to, Detention, Corrections, Probation, Community Corrections or other related work experience. Must be able to work any shift if needed. There is an annual salary enhancement of $1,000. 00 for an Associates' Degree or $2,000. 00 for a Bachelor's Degree. Additional Salary Enhancements For Bi-lingual Skills Is Availiable.
