Entrepreneurial and technology-driven, we leverage AI, automation, and process innovation to deliver precision, efficiency, and best-in-class service across every facet of real estate operations.Role DescriptionThe Controller will serve as the financial backbone of TARGO’s platform, responsible for delivering institutional-quality reporting, controls, and transparency across all assets and entities. Working directly with the senior leadership team, this role will help expand, refine, and optimize a modern financial reporting ecosystem.TARGO currently utilizes AppFolio (Property), QuickBooks (Corporate), and Notion to ensure that all departments, stakeholders, investors, and lenders receive accurate, timely, and consistent financial information.This is a high-impact, growth-oriented position with significant opportunity to scale and evolve alongside the company’s rapid expansion.Key Responsibilities:1. Financial Oversight & ReportingLead the monthly close and reporting process for all properties and partnership entities.Oversee a team of remote and third-party accountants and bookkeepers. The ideal candidate has experience managing remote staff, building scalable systems and workflows, and optimizing accounting operations for efficiency.Review and approve monthly, quarterly, and annual financial packages for principals, investors, and lenders.Manage audits, tax compliance, and loan covenant tracking.2. Systems & Process DesignRefine and strengthen financial controls, standardize SOPs, and establish repeatable processes to scale the portfolio efficiently.Leverage technology, automation, and AI concepts to minimize manual work and increase accuracy. (Expertise as a system builder and implementer highly desired; technical execution supported by the tech ops team.)3. Investor Reporting & AppFolio IMS ImplementationBuild and maintain standardized dashboards and reporting templates within company systems (AppFolio, Notion, etc.).Ensure timely delivery of financial reporting packages for investors and lenders.Co-lead the implementation and integration of AppFolio IMS to ensure proper architecture from day one.4. Budgeting, Forecasting & Asset Management SupportPartner with cross-functional teams to provide timely financial data, budget-to-actual comparisons, and NOI projections to inform business plans and refinancing/sale decisions.Develop and maintain 12-month rolling property-level forecasts.5. Leadership & GovernanceReport directly to senior principals and oversee remote accounting staff, with potential to grow and manage additional team members as the firm scales.Interface with investor relations and capital-raising efforts once the reporting cadence is established.Candidate Profile:Experience: 10+ years of real estate finance/accounting experience, preferably with a NYC multifamily focus. Property-level accounting experience required. Must have experience managing remote staff and third-party accounting services.Technical Skills: AppFolio Admin expertise (required); GAAP cash and accrual property and partnership accounting; Excel; QuickBooks.Soft Skills: Highly organized, hands-on, communicative, and comfortable working directly with principals and remote third-party teams in a fast-paced environment.Mindset: Entrepreneurial self-starter who thrives in a lean, high-growth environment and embraces technology as a tool for scalability. Demonstratable passion for system building and implementation.Credentials: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Real Estate; CPA preferred.Compensation: Base salary plus discretionary bonus tied to defined KPIs. This role may become eligible for long-term incentive.Work Environment: Full-time in NYC office preferred; remote/work-from-home flexibility available following onboarding.Compensation: $175K–$215K base + discretionary bonus tied to to be defined KPIs.
