Job Description
We have a current opportunity for a Cyber Security Engineer, on a contract basis within the Defence sector. The role is based in Canberra, ACT. The contract is for an initial 24 month period, with a 2 x 12 month extension option. Start: circa 01 November 2025 DSS Skill Set: Level 3 - Specialist Engineering - Communications Network Engineering The Cyber Security Engineer will be responsible for, but not limited to the following duties:Administer and maintain cyber / network security appliances (e.g. - firewalls, cross-domain solutions, gateways, etc.), infrastructure and software across both physical and virtual environments.Design, build and implement security and network management in support of the Land Combat System Validation Lab and initiatives.Close collaboration with engineering, DevSecOps and Environment teams to deploy, operate and maintain security systems; contribute towards future architectural decisions.Provide technical support to Army exercises for role specific technologies and systems.Lead the conduct of regular system audits, vulnerability assessments, patching and maintenance activities, and risk assessments to system owners.Manage security policies and enforce secure access controls, including compliance to the Information Security manual (ISM).Assist in creation of and maintenance of comprehensive security compliance documentation.Develop and maintain automation scripts (e.g. - Bash, Python, PowerShell, Ansible and Group Policy).Integrate cybersecurity into CI/CD pipelines utilising GitLab & Ansible.Validate security controls and practices for environments and systems.Minimum mandatory requirements:AGSVA Security clearance.Extensive technical experience in designing, deploying and maintaining cybersecurity systems / capabilities (e.g. - hardware and applications).Understanding and experience implementing the ISM Security Controls within Classified Environments within primarily Windows and Linux environments.Strong awareness of cyber threats and vulnerabilities.Familiarity with the Defence Cybersecurity Assessment & Authorisation framework and requirements.Working knowledge of networking, storage, and virtualisation (KVM, VMware).Working knowledge of Linux based operating systems, programming (Java, PowerShell).Familiarity with integrating emerging technologies into secure infrastructure.Experience supporting Defence or government projects.Experience in preparing technical and security documentation.Relevant tertiary and/or vocational education in cybersecurity, network/software engineering or similar IT fields.Desirable requirements:Industry certifications in cybersecurity (e.g. - Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) Security+, CISSP, GIAC Security Engineering (GSE) or equivalent security certification.ITIL Foundation (for service management).AWS/Azure/GCP certifications (for hybrid cloud environments).For the full information on this position, please submit your 8am Monday 27 October 2025.
