Job detailsPosted 28 October 2025 Salary Grade 6: £33,951 - £37,694 per annum End date 03 December 2025 LocationGlasgow Job Type Technical And Specialist Reference185533 Expiry 03 December 2025 at 23:45Job DescriptionJob PurposeTo provide high quality Electronics & Electrical engineering technical advice and support for research and teaching in the James Watt School of Engineering (JWSE), College of Science & Engineering using detailed knowledge and understanding of electronics, electro-mechanical technologies and engineering applications software expertise.To interpret the needs of research staff and students and provide appropriate technical assistance and guidance allowing research and teaching objectives to be met. The post will support world class research projects and teaching activities, contributing to the strategic objectives of the University.Main Duties And Responsibilities To design, construct and/or develop electronic, electrical, electro-mechanical and computer-controlled instruments and equipment utilising a wide range of specialist skills and techniques to support teaching and research activities in the JWSE. To diagnose faults and carry out routine maintenance and repairs on a wide range of sophisticated portable and fixed electronic and related equipment used in research and teaching laboratories across the JWSE always working to safe and professional standards. To provide expert technical advice and propose technical solutions in the field of electronics and/or electrical engineering for undergraduate, post graduate students, researchers and teaching staff across the JSWE. To engage with training initiatives and supervise apprentices and/or work placements as required in line with a school objective to encourage skills transfer and development. Keep up to date with developments in relevant research/technical areas and within electronics electrical engineering advancements, to ensure contribution to research and teaching goals is optimised. Where relevant, make informed decisions and offer expert advice on purchasing of capital equipment and consumables following consultation with appropriate colleagues. May undertake complex data analysis, identifying trends, problems or anomalies, and present findings clearly to research group and/or to wider audiences via presentations or within appropriate research publications. Be responsible as part of a team, for the day-to-day management of and compliance with relevant Health and Safety, including risk assessments. Where relevant, keep up to date with developments or legal changes relevant to the work of the teaching laboratory or research group and advise and train group members as appropriate. Report any potential issues to the academics, technical services manager, Safety representatives and relevant internal or external bodies timeously. Work collaboratively with others, including within the wider College of Science and Engineering and where relevant with external contacts, to enhance the delivery of the research and teaching aims and support the broader strategic aims of the University.
