Job Description

Purpose of the Role:As the Divisional Enterprise Risk Manager for the Mining Division, you will serve as the strategic and operational custodian of enterprise risk management (ERM), supporting the Group Enterprise Risk Manager in embedding a proactive, value-driven risk culture across all mining operations. This role is critical in enabling the division to identify, assess, and mitigate strategic, operational, financial, and compliance risks—ensuring the protection of people, assets, and reputation across South African, African, and international mining interests. You will act as the division’s Subject Matter Expert (SME) on risk, balancing high-level advisory with hands-on implementation to ensure risk exposure remains within defined appetite and tolerance thresholds.Duties and Responsibilities:ERM System Enablement: Support first-line management in effectively utilising ERM systems and tools to identify, assess, monitor, and mitigate risks across all facets of the Mining Division, in alignment with Group Risk Management standards and frameworks.Risk Assessment & Profiling: Coordinate and facilitate divisional and functional risk assessment workshops, leading the development and maintenance of comprehensive risk registers and profiles for operations in South Africa, the broader African continent, and international jurisdictions.Strategic Risk Analysis: Conduct in-depth risk deep dives into business-critical issues, operational vulnerabilities, and emerging threats, providing actionable insights to inform decision-making and strategic planning.Mitigation Planning & Execution: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Operations, SHEQ, Finance, and Legal, to design, implement, and monitor risk mitigation strategies that align with the division’s risk appetite and tolerance levels.Business Continuity Management (BCM): Lead the implementation and periodic review of BCM frameworks, ensuring readiness for crisis response, disaster recovery, and operational resilience in high-risk mining environments.Framework Integration: Ensure that all elements of the Group’s Risk Management framework, including Governance, Risk Appetite, Controls, and Assurance, are effectively embedded and operational within the Mining Division.Emerging Risk Monitoring: Continuously scan internal and external environments to identify emerging risks, regulatory changes, geopolitical shifts, and industry trends that may impact mining operations.Risk Communication & Awareness: Promote open and transparent communication of risk-related information through ERM platforms, dashboards, and forums to enhance awareness, accountability, and responsiveness across the organisation.Reporting & Governance: Prepare and present accurate, timely, and insightful risk reports to operational teams, divisional leadership, and governance committees, supporting informed oversight and compliance.Knowledge and Experience:Minimum of 10 years’ experience in Enterprise Risk Management, ideally within Mining or Chemical Manufacturing environments known for operational complexity and regulatory intensity.Demonstrated success in leading ERM initiatives within large, matrixed organisations, with a proven ability to navigate cross-functional dynamics and influence strategic outcomes.Advanced proficiency in ERM systems and digital risk platforms, with a track record of leveraging technology to enhance risk identification, monitoring, and reporting processes.In-depth knowledge of King IV™ principles on Corporate Governance, with a strong grasp of how risk intersects with key business functions such as Finance, Operations, SHEQ, and Compliance.Solid understanding of risk management methodologies and frameworks, including ISO 31000, COSO ERM, and other globally recognised standards.
