Job Description

The IB ESS & Biology Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, student-centered learning experiences aligned with the IB Diploma Programme. This role contributes to the academic, social, and emotional development of students within a multicultural residential community. The teacher supports UWC Costa Rica’s mission of preparing young people to serve humanity and the planet through transformative education, sustainability-focused learning, and meaningful engagement inside and outside the classroom.Key ResponsibilitiesTeachingPlan and deliver engaging, rigorous lessons aligned with the IB ESS and Biology curriculum.Develop and maintain IB-aligned Unit Plans.Use diverse and experiential teaching strategies to meet different learning needs.Assess student work accurately using clear criteria and provide timely feedback.Supervise Extended Essays in the relevant subject area.Design and administer assessments, including participation in exam invigilation.Maintain an inclusive, respectful, and intellectually stimulating classroom environment.Support student academic progress through tutorials and additional guidance.Meet all academic deadlines, including predicted grades and internal assessments.MentorshipLead a mentor group of approximately 10–12 students.Hold regular meetings and individual check-ins to support wellbeing, attendance, and overall development.Provide guidance or refer students to specialists when necessary.Participate in 6–8 weekend residential duties annually.Co-Curricular & Community EngagementFacilitate or participate in CAS activities and co-curricular programs.Contribute to Conociendo Costa Rica experiences, Community Action Week, and Thematic Weeks.Support logistical tasks related to co-curricular programming.Team & Community ParticipationAttend faculty meetings, departmental meetings, and school-wide events.Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and mission-driven workplace culture.Engage with colleagues, students, parents, and external stakeholders in a professional manner.RequirementsBachelor’s degree in Biology or a closely related field.National or international teaching certification.Minimum 2 years of relevant teaching experience, preferably in international settings.Experience with the IB Diploma Programme (highly preferred).Experience working with diverse cultural groups and residential school environments (preferred).
