With nearly 30 years of experience and more than 1,100 international assignments implemented, NTU provides high-level expertise across engineering, extractives, infrastructure, governance, environment, and socio-economic development sectors.We are currently seeking a qualified Mining Engineer with experience in Critical Raw Materials (CRM) to support our work under the EU-funded Critical Raw Materials Technical Assistance Facility implemented in partnership with the European Investment Bank (EIB).Position SummaryWe are looking for an experienced mining professional with solid technical and operational knowledge of the extractives sector and proven work experience with critical raw materials (CRM) in an African context. The expert will contribute to in-country assignments supporting CRM sector development, including project identification, technical assessments, capacity building, and policy-related support.The role involves close engagement with national authorities, mining agencies, local stakeholders, and development partners to advance sustainable CRM value chains aligned with EU and national priorities.This is a part-time consultancy position, ideal for a technically strong professional interested in applying mining expertise within a development, policy, and advisory environment.Key ResponsibilitiesConduct technical assessments related to CRM extraction, processing, and resource potential.Provide engineering inputs to feasibility studies, market assessments, and project preparation activities.Support the review of mining legislation, regulatory frameworks, or national CRM strategies.Contribute to environmental and social (E&S) due diligence, good practices, and capacity-building initiatives.Participate in stakeholder consultations with ministries, mining departments, ASM groups, private operators, and development partners.Draft and review technical notes, site visit reports, training materials, and contributions to CRM sector analyses.Support project managers, EIB sector specialists, and international experts in the implementation of country-level TA activities.Assist with the organisation and delivery of workshops, training sessions, and policy dialogues.Collect and synthesise field data, sector insights, and technical evidence to support advisory work in the CRM sector.Areas of WorkAssignments may include, but are not limited to, the following thematic domains:CRM Sector Development: resource assessments, extraction methods, processing options, value chain opportunities.Policy and Governance: support to mining strategies, institutional strengthening, regulatory gap analyses.ESG and Responsible Mining: environmental and social good practices, ASM formalisation support, compliance with international standards.Technical Project Preparation: feasibility studies, operational optimisation, engineering inputs, risk assessments.Capacity Building: training of national authorities, geological staff, mining inspectors, ASM operators.Stakeholder Engagement: coordination with EU Delegations, ministries, public institutions, private sector and community actors.Economic and Technical Analysis: support for investment logic, cost assessments, processing flowsheets, or mine planning concepts.Qualifications and SkillsUniversity degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Extractive Metallurgy, Mineral Processing, or a closely related field.At least 7–10 years of professional experience in the mining or extractives sector.Demonstrated experience with critical raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, manganese, graphite, rare earth elements, tantalum, niobium, etc.Proven technical experience in mine operations, extraction techniques, processing, or project development.Experience in one or more of the following is a strong asset:feasibility studies and technical due diligenceESG compliance (IFC/EIB standards)ASM support or sector formalisationmining policy, legislation, or institutional strengtheningAbility to work with government stakeholders, development partners, and multidisciplinary teams.Strong analytical, reporting, and technical writing skills.Excellent command of English; knowledge of French or Portuguese is an added advantage depending on the country context.Contract DetailsType: Part-time consultancyLocation: Remote + country-based work in Africa (with field visits as required)Duration: Ongoing assignments under the CRM TA FacilityHow to ApplyPlease send your CV and a brief cover letter under the subject line “Mining Sector Engineer – CRM TA Facility” to recruitment@ntu.eu.Please include one or more telephone numbers for contact.Due to the expected high volume of applications, only candidates whose profiles most closely match the position requirements will be contacted.
