Serves as a Traffic Engineer with knowledge of the study, design, construction, operation and maintenance of traffic control devices including traffic signals, pavement markings, and signs, as well as geometric road features such as roadway horizontal and vertical geometry, intersections, islands, interchanges, and medians. Functions as a task manager for the review of traffic control (work zone), signing, traffic signals, and project permits. Prepares and reviews traffic-engineering reports/studies and plans requiring the collection and interpretation of field data.
Performs routine to highly complex engineering calculations to determine roadway horizontal and vertical geometric features that in some cases may include developing solutions to geometric, environmental, cost, traffic control and traffic maintenance constraints. Utilizes traffic-engineering software to determine signal timings, traffic measures of effectiveness, and sign shop drawings. Also uses CAD Software to review and develop geometric solutions to plans for the proper selection and placement of geometric and traffic control devices, and other software including but not limited to web-based, mapping/GIS software. Attends public meetings to assist the project team.
Provides technical guidance by assisting in the writing of Traffic Engineering scopes for other sections of the Department such as project management, planning and environmental and for local municipalities and developers.
