Transmission EngineerDepartment: Southern Africa Multi-Country Professional Service Department Location: Zambia1. Job Purpose / ObjectiveThe Transmission Engineer will be responsible for the end-to-end technical delivery, maintenance, and optimization of Huawei’s optical transmission network systems. This role focuses on ensuring the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of SDH, WDM, PTN, and ASON networks across multiple projects in Zambia and the Southern Africa region. The engineer will provide both onsite and remote support, lead transmission project deployments, and continuously improve network performance to meet customer satisfaction and business goals.2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Project Delivery & Engineering ImplementationServe as the Transmission Engineer (TE), Team Leader (TL), or Technical Director (TD) for onsite transmission delivery projects.Execute project deployment, including hardware installation supervision, software commissioning, acceptance testing, and system integration.Lead technical troubleshooting and fault resolution activities during the delivery and implementation phases.Ensure all project activities comply with Huawei standards, local safety requirements, and customer expectations.Provide detailed engineering documentation and technical reports for internal review and customer submission.3. Network Maintenance & OptimizationAct as a Network Maintenance Engineer for optical network systems — SDH, WDM, PTN, and OTN.Perform regular maintenance, system monitoring, fault location, and preventive troubleshooting.Conduct performance analysis, network health assessments, and optimization recommendations to improve stability and efficiency.Coordinate with NOC and Field Maintenance Teams to ensure continuous and stable operation of customer networks.4. Remote Engineering & Technical SupportSupport remote delivery activities, including network evaluation, optimization, planning, and design.Provide technical consultation and training to local engineering teams and subcontractors.Develop and deliver customer-facing technical reports, performance reviews, and system upgrade proposals.Assist with professional service projects by ensuring timely, high-quality, and cost-effective delivery.D. Quality, Risk & Knowledge ManagementMaintain project and network documentation for internal and customer reference.Identify potential technical risks and implement mitigation measures.Continuously summarize project lessons learned and share best practices within the team.Support internal knowledge transfer, mentoring junior engineers and building local capability.5. Professional Knowledge & Business SkillsEducation:Bachelor’s degree or above in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or Computer Science.Work Experience:Minimum 5 years of experience in optical transmission engineering, with hands-on project delivery and network maintenance experience in large-scale telecommunications environments.Proven experience with multi-vendor optical systems is an added advantage.Technical Expertise:Optical Transmission Knowledge:Mastery of SDH, WDM, PTN, ASON, and MSTP dual-plane technologies.In-depth understanding of optical transmission principles (fiber optics, OSNR, dispersion, PMD, attenuation, etc.).Network Design & Implementation:Ability to independently complete end-to-end delivery of optical network projects.Skilled in long-distance backbone WDM networks (40G/100G) engineering and maintenance.Capable of evaluating existing networks and designing new OTN and hybrid MSTP LLD solutions.Tools & Systems:Familiar with Huawei transmission network management systems, commissioning tools, and optical test instruments (e.g., OTDR, power meters).Project Management:Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring on-time and within-budget delivery.Soft Skills:Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Excellent communication and coordination abilities.Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional, multicultural team.Self-motivated with a results-driven mindset.Fluent in English (written and spoken).6.
