About The RoleThe Tyre Specialist is responsible for the governance and oversight of tyre management activities carried out by the contracted tyre service provider. This role ensures that all contractor-performed tyre inspections, maintenance, and replacements meet Rio Tinto's operational, safety, and compliance standards.
The Tyre Specialist provides technical guidance, monitors contractor performance, manages tyre data and reporting systems, and contributes to continuous improvement initiatives to maximise tyre life and fleet availability. Key ResponsibilitiesOversee the tyre contractor to ensure compliance with contractual obligations, site safety standards, and OEM recommendations. Monitor HME tyre condition, pressure, temperature, and wear trends using tyre management systems and digital tools. Validate the quality and timeliness of tyre inspections, change-outs, repairs, and rotations performed by the contractor. Conduct regular audits, field verifications, and safety interactions with tyre contractor personnel.
Investigate significant tyre and rim failures and incidents, lead or support root cause analysis (RCA), and implement corrective actions. Ensure accurate and timely entry of tyre and rim data into site tyre management systems (e. g. TMS, OTRAC). Manage tyre and rim stock levels, usage forecasts, and contractor coordination to minimise operational disruptions. Liaise with tyre manufacturers, vendors, and internal stakeholders for technical support, warranty claims, and product trials. Support the development and enforcement of tyre-related safe work procedures and storage practices. Provide coaching and technical guidance to site teams on tyre care, inspection standards, and risk management.
Contribute to budgeting and cost control by tracking tyre performance and recommending optimisation opportunities. Qualifications & ExperienceCertificate III in Tyre Fitting or a related mechanical trade. Minimum 5 years’ experience in mining or heavy industry tyre management, with exposure to contractor supervision. Strong knowledge of HME tyre brands (e. g. Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear), rim systems, and tyre failure modes. Expert-level understanding of tyre wear patterns, failure modes, and tyre/rim safety. Experience working with tyre management systems (e. g. TMS, Rimex, OTRAC) and tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS). Strong understanding of contractor management, safety leadership, and performance monitoring.
Proven ability to analyse tyre data, identify trends, and drive improvements. Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, both written and verbal. Experience working in remote or FIFO mining operations, preferably within the international mining industry. Fluency in English required, proficiency in French is an advantage.
