Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: Selvam Karthi's Goal Secures India 3-2 Win Against New Zealand

Selvam Karthi struck the decisive goal in the final quarter as India edged New Zealand 3-2 in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup on Thursday.
Fresh off their thrilling 4-3 victory over hosts Malaysia, India found the target through Amit Rohidas (4’), captain Sanjay (32’) and Selvam (54’). George Baker (42’, 48’) scored both goals for New Zealand.
New Zealand controlled early possession, but India’s defence stayed organised. The visitors earned their first penalty corner in the fourth minute after a well-constructed move, and Rohidas made no mistake with a blistering drag-flick to put India ahead.
India nearly doubled their lead late in the first quarter, only for the New Zealand goalkeeper to deny Abhishek from close range.
The Black Sticks came out with greater intent in the second quarter and earned a penalty corner of their own, but the Indian backline remained resolute to keep the lead intact at halftime.
Sanjay extended the cushion early in the third quarter, converting a penalty corner in the 32nd minute. New Zealand responded with sustained pressure and multiple set pieces, but Pawan was solid in goal before Baker finally broke through in the 42nd minute.
The Black Sticks levelled the match in the 48th minute, with Baker once again converting from a penalty corner to make it 2-2.
India hit back quickly. Abhishek found Selvam with a sharp pass, and the striker finished clinically in the 54th minute to restore the advantage for the five-time champions.
India will face Canada next on Saturday.
