Urgent recall notice issued for sliced meats sold at Woolworths and butcher shops over contamination risk

Customers have been urged to return a number sliced deli meats over “severe illness” fears. A recall alert from Food Standards Australia New Zealand warned customers who had bought 1kg packages of Gotzinger Smallgoods brand sliced silverside, roast beef, 4x4 sandwich ham, champagne ham and provincial ham. The company’s website lists its provincial ham being sold at Woolworths, but Food Standards warns the products “may have been available for sale in retail outlets and butcher shops in NSW and QLD”. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Arrow Food Standards issued the alert over concerns the meats had been contaminated by listeria monocytogenes, which causes a listeria infection. “Listeria monocytogenes may cause severe illness in pregnant women, unborn babies, neonates, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals,” Food Standards said. “The general population can also become ill from consuming food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.” Symptoms of a listeria infection affecting the digestive system include diarrhea, upset stomach and vomiting, according to the Mayo Clinic. “Healthy people rarely become very ill from listeria infection but the disease can be fatal to unborn babies, newborns and people with weakened immune systems,” the Mayo Clinic says. “Prompt antibiotic treatment can help curb the effects of listeria infection.” These symptoms often start within a day of eating tainted food. They tend to go away within a few days. The alert warns consumers “should not eat this product” and instead “return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund”. All 1kg sliced roast beef packages have been recalled while the below products have alerts for various use-by dates: Sliced silverside 1kg: All use by dates up to and including 20/12/2025.4x4 sandwich ham 1kg: All use by dates up to and including 13/12/2025.Champagne ham sliced 1kg: All use by dates up to and including 17/12/2025.Provincial ham sliced 1kg: All use by dates up to and including 15/12/2025. 7NEWS.com.au approached Gotzinger Smallgoods for comment.
