Kerala tells Union: PM SHRI scheme on hold, formal reply to follow

Kerala has orally conveyed its stand on the PM SHRI (Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India) scheme to the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, State Education Minister V Sivankutty said on Monday, November 10, clarifying that the state has not yet issued a written communication.Addressing the media after meeting the Union Education Minister Pradhan in New Delhi, Sivankutty said the state government had informed the Centre that the PM SHRI scheme had been "kept in abeyance" in Kerala."We have taken all necessary steps to ensure that the state does not lose any Central funds," he added.Minister Sivankutty said that a formal letter would be sent only after the sub-committee constituted to examine the scheme submits its report. He noted that Union Minister Pradhan did not make any categorical response -- either in favour or against -- during the discussions.Responding to queries on CPI leader Binoy Viswam's criticism of the state government's stance, Sivankutty said, "I neither have the intention nor the need to question his comments."Meanwhile, the Minister said he had written to the Union Education Minister seeking urgent action in connection with the recent Gana Geetham controversy during the Vande Bharat Express flag-off ceremony. He termed the incident -- where students were reportedly made to sing an RSS song and the video was shared on the Southern Railway's official social media account — "a serious violation of constitutional secular values".The state government has directed the Director of General Education to conduct an inquiry, Sivankutty said, adding that further steps would follow upon receiving the report.Sivankutty also underlined that CBSE schools in Kerala require state recognition to function, and the state government has the authority to revoke the No Objection Certificate (NOC) at any time."Only songs acceptable to all children should be sung at official functions," he added, calling for a common, inclusive song for such occasions.Highlighting Kerala's independent approach to school education, Sivankutty said the state was the only one to prepare and conduct examinations based on NCERT portions that had been omitted. He said the state required Central assistance to sustain such initiatives and that the Union Minister Pradhan had assured consideration of funding requests -- including Rs 1,066.66 crore for the Samagra Shiksha Kerala programme, and Rs 9 crore for hostel development.

BAN vs IRE 2025: Ireland’s Ross Adair Ruled Out of T20Is vs Bangladesh

Dublin, November 10: Ireland opener Ross Adair has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh with a bone stress in the knee, Cricket Ireland said on Monday. Jordan Neill, who was originally named in the two-match Test squad, will stay on after the Tests and replace Adair in the T20I squad. BAN vs IRE 1st Test 2025: Harry Tector Backs Ireland To Rise Above Bangladesh Challenge Despite Spin Threat. Since his memorable 58-ball century against South Africa late last year, Adair has had to overcome a few injury concerns in 2025, and in his three T20Is this year, he has found some form with 48 against West Indies and 26 and 33 against England. The withdrawal now allows him to prepare back at home for the T20 World Cup in February 2026. Jordan Neill was selected as part of the 15-man Test squad for the upcoming tour, and now will stay on to be part of the T20I squad. Andrew White, National Men’s Selector, said, "It’s very unfortunate to have lost Ross on the eve of the Bangladesh tour. He really demonstrated his value at the top of the T20I order during the few chances he had in 2025, and we were looking forward to seeing him perform against Bangladesh." "There are a couple of combinations that we are keen to explore as we build up to next year’s T20 World Cup. Jordan Neill will stay on as part of the T20I squad to provide valuable cover to the wider group. We have players who in the past showed they are capable of deputising at the top of the order – this allows us to adjust the batting line-up and create greater flexibility through the middle and late overs. The left-handed Ben Calitz coming into the middle order will provide us with the variety we have struggled with over recent years – and this tour gives us a much-needed opportunity to see how a number of players adapt to different situations and conditions."

Bihar Assembly Elections 2025: PM Narendra Modi Invokes ‘Chhathi Maiya’ to Flay Opposition, Says ‘Naamdars Mocked Maha Kumbh’

Patna, November 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a blistering attack at the RJD-Cong-led Mahagathbandhan on Thursday, accusing them of ruining the state with their 'jungle raj', despite Bihar being the birthplace of social justice in previous decades. Addressing a mega rally in Araria district, the Prime Minister invoked ‘Chhathi Maiya’ to lambast the Opposition and called out their attempt to mock the most pious festival of Bihar by equating it with a drama. “Will you accept anyone referring to Chhathi Maiya as drama, will you accept anyone insulting Chhathi Maiya?” asked PM Modi, evoking a strong response from the gathering. PM Modi further slammed the ‘naamdars’, a reference to dynast leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav, and called out their ‘irreverence and disrespect’ for Maha Kumbh as well as Lord Ram. He said that the naamdars used to mock Maha Kumbh -- the month-long festival which saw crores of pilgrims taking holy dip in Prayagraj and saw devotees coming from across the world. They don’t believe in Lord Ram, they didn’t visit Ayodhya, they didn’t attend Pran Pratistha,” PM Modi said. “You may dislike Lord Ram, but why can’t you visit Ayodhya and seek the blessings of Maharshi Valmiki, Mata Sabri, Nishad Raj... temples dedicated to them are also built in close vicinity,” he added. The Prime Minister said that this shows that they detest the backward population as well as Dalits; however, for the NDA, its only purpose is the empowerment and upliftment of all communities. Further seeking to draw a comparison between RJD’s jungle raj to NDA’s progressive governance, he stated that an entire generation’s future was destroyed because of them. Highlighting the jungle raj’s legacy, he said, “Zero highways, zero bridges were built in 15 years of jungle raj, zero sports complexes were built, zero tourist circuits were developed.” In contrast, PM Modi said the NDA government worked tirelessly to pull Bihar out of jungle raj. Automatic Toll Collection System: NHAI to Roll Out Automatic Tolling With High Speed Cameras on Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway and GST Roads

Chennai, November 6: In a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at eliminating traffic snarls at toll plazas, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to introduce a camera-based automatic toll collection system on key stretches of the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway and GST Road. The initiative will replace conventional toll booths with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras integrated with the FASTag platform, enabling vehicles to pass through toll points without stopping. The system, known as Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF), is designed to capture vehicle registration details at speeds of up to 150 kmph, ensuring seamless, congestion-free travel. The new system will first be implemented at the Nemili (Sriperumbudur) and Chennasamudram toll plazas on the Chennai-Bengaluru NH, and at Paranur toll plaza on the Tambaram-Villupuram stretch of GST Road. Together, these busy corridors handle around 75,000 passenger car units daily, according to NHAI data. FASTag KYV Update: NHAI Simplifies Know Your Vehicle Process for FASTag Users; Check Details and Know What Has Changed. Once operational, the ANPR cameras will automatically record vehicle details and deduct the applicable toll amount from the driver’s FASTag account. The move is expected to drastically reduce travel time and fuel wastage while improving traffic flow across major intercity routes. The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) under the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, will oversee the implementation. It has already floated tenders to select an operator for designing, developing, and maintaining the system for a five-year term. Officials said the six-lane main carriageway will remain fully open to traffic, with overhead ANPR cameras and RFID readers placed strategically for smooth toll deduction. “The system involves installation of complex equipment and will undergo multi-level verification before being commissioned,” an official said. Each camera will be capable of capturing clear images of number plates and short video clips from a distance of up to 40 metres, with additional RFID devices identifying vehicles as far as 300 metres before they reach the toll point. Dahisar Toll Plaza Shifting Hits Roadblock As NHAI Rejects Relocation Proposal. The contractor will be required to complete installation within 14 months of the work order. Separate procedures will be notified later to handle toll recovery from vehicles where automatic deduction fails, officials added. Once fully operational, the MLFF system is expected to make long queues at toll plazas a thing of the past, ushering in a new era of smart, fast, and frictionless highway travel.

NYC Mayor Election 2025: All Eyes on Zohran Mamdani As Donald Trump’s Shadow Looms Over New York City Mayoral Poll

New York, November 4: Elections across several parts of the United States on Tuesday will choose state and local officials, decide key local issues, and put the spotlight on Zohran Mamdani, a controversial progressive running on the Democratic Party ticket in New York City, the nation’s largest metropolis. US President Donald Trump's looming presence animating the polls either way, although the scattered polls can't quite be a referendum on him. But some of the elections can give a hint of next year’s midterm elections' outcomes, where Congress is at play, and these include the governorships of New Jersey and Virginia. Zohran Mamdani Breaks Down While Defending His Muslim Identity, Says ‘Aunt Felt Unsafe in Hijab After 9/11’; JD Vance Replies. A referendum to redraw Congressional constituencies in California to elect more Democrats and balance the Republicans, altering them to their advantage in Texas and elsewhere, is also on the ballot. Congressional constituency delimitation is done by the states, and California's Democrat-heavy electorate is expected to go for it. Zohair Mamdani Stuns in June Primary Citizens registering to vote in the US election system opt to sign up to a party or to be independent, and New York is overwhelmingly Democrats, with 56 per cent of the voters to 26 per cent for Republicans and 18 per cent Independent. In the June primary, the intraparty elections to pick the party candidates, Mamdani struck a stunning win, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and sitting Mayor Eric Adams fueled by the city Democrat’s anathema towards Trump and the candidate's promises of free city buses, rent freeze and taxing the rich and backed by a strategically astute army of youth, fresh off anti-Israel protests that rocked the city. Who Is Zohran Mamdani? All About Indian-Origin Lawyer and Mira Nair’s Son Who Declared Victory in NYC Democratic Mayoral Primary, Defeating Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani Maintains Edge in Three-Way NYC Mayoral Race He is challenged by Cuomo, a moderate running as an independent, and Curtis Sliwa, the founder of a vigilante group, on the Republican ticket. The polls show that if Cuomo and Sliwa's votes were combined, Mamdani could lose, and even Trump has shown support for Cuomo, saying a “bad” Democrat was better than a communist. While the communist moniker is contested, Trump and others base it on Mamdani’s promise to Democrat Socialists to ultimately take over the means of production – a decidedly communist platform — and similar statements which he and his supporters downplay now. But Sliwa, defying Trump, refused to withdraw from the race, giving Mamdani the edge in a three-way race, even though Cuomo has had a late surge in polls. Mamdani is Filmmaker Mira Nair and Academic Mahmood Mamdani's Son Mamdani is the son of Mira Nair, the movie director who is from a Hindu family and has not converted to Islam, at least publicly, and a Ugandan academic, Mahmood Mamdani, who claims Indian roots. Mamdani, who claims his father’s religion and his radicalism, if elected, would be the city’s first Muslim mayor – sharing a status like that of British-Pakistani Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, that country’s main city. With the middle name Kwame, he has also claimed to be "African American". Criticisms Faced by Mamdani A Khalistan supporter, who joined their rally where vile chants against Hindus were shouted, he has said he would boycott Prime Minister Narendra Modi if he visited the city. Deeply anti-Israel to the extent of being anti-Semitic, according to some, he has also made the absurd threat of using city police to arrest Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who would be guarded by the federal Secret Service and his own bodyguards. Like that, many of his campaign promises are beyond the mayor's powers. He has accused the city’s police department, which he has said he would cut, of being linked to Israel’s military. However, the Jewish voters, traditionally liberal and Democrat, are split, with many backing Mamdani because of their opposition to Trump. That goes for Hindus also and Congressman Ro Khanna campaigned for Mamdani in a heavily South Asian neighbourhood at an event which Americans of Bangladeshi and Pakistani descent dominated. Tactically for the Republicans, a Mamdani win would be useful in next year’s election when they can try to tie moderate Democrats in swing constituencies to his radicalism. That is one of the reasons many Democrats like former President Barack Obama and the party’s Senate leader Chuck Schumer, have not endorsed him, while many party legislators have broken the party line to back Cuomo. A Democrat running for public prosecutor – an elected post – in neighbouring Nassau County has served a legal notice against Republicans for tying him to Mamdani. In Virginia, which adjoins Washington, the latest poll shows the Democrat Abigail Spanberger with a 10-per-cent lead over the current Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears and poised to wrest the governorship from Republicans. But the Democrat running for attorney general, who made death threats against the governor and his wife – but still managed to get the party’s endorsement, is down in the polls. New Jersey polls give a slight edge to Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy pilot and Congresswoman, over Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a businessman and former state assemblyman. In both these races, like many around the country, Trump overrides local issues and Democrats tie him to the Republicans, who play a balancing act distancing themselves from some of the president’s policies. Among other major mayoral races, Democrat-run cities Minneapolis, Detroit, Boston, New Orleans, Cincinnati, and Charlotte are expected to stay with Democrats, while in Miami, Republican are expressed to retain control. In Cincinnati, Mayor Aftab Karma Singh Pureval, the son of a Tibetan mother and a Sikh father, is expected to defeat Vice President JD Vance’s half-brother Cory Bowman.

Witnesses said the fire quickly spread through the building and nearby vehicles, trapping several people inside, Xinhua news agency reported. Rescue teams rushed to the scene to conduct search-and-rescue operations and transport the 12 injured people to local hospitals. Delhi chokes as AQI crosses 400; dense smog blankets NCR

New Delhi: The national capital witnessed a sharp deterioration in air quality on Sunday morning, with pollution levels slipping deep into the ‘very poor’ category and touching ‘severe’ levels in several parts of Delhi-NCR. A blanket of dense smog and calm morning winds trapped pollutants close to the surface, significantly reducing visibility and worsening breathing conditions across the region. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 372 at 6:30 a.m., firmly placing it in the ‘very poor’ category. Pollution levels worsened further in several parts of the city, where AQI readings crossed the 400 mark, indicating ‘severe’ air quality. Among the most polluted areas were Wazirpur (425), Bawana (410), Rohini (409), RK Puram (418), and Dwarka (401), all recording hazardous levels of pollution. Across the city, most monitoring stations showed AQI levels between 300 and 400, reflecting widespread toxic air. In the NCR region, air quality remained alarmingly poor as well, with Faridabad (312), Gurugram (325), Greater Noida (308), Ghaziabad (322) and Noida (301) all recording AQI levels in the ‘very poor’ category. Meteorological conditions contributed heavily to the pollution build-up. Delhi’s primary weather station at Safdarjung reported a visibility of 900 metres, while Palam recorded 1,300 metres, both due to a mix of fog and smog. Winds remained light, with speeds around 4 kmph, insufficient to disperse the accumulated pollutants. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 30.5 degrees Celsius, about three degrees below the seasonal average, and a minimum of 19.4 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal. Humidity stood at 73 per cent on Saturday evening, further aiding the formation of smog. Saturday night’s AQI was 303, already in the ‘very poor’ range, but overnight stagnation and low wind speed caused a sharp spike by morning. Experts have warned that without strong northwesterly winds or rain, air quality is likely to worsen in the coming days as stubble burning and local emissions continue to add to Delhi’s pollution woes.
