Woman arrested at Mumbai airport with Rs 47 crore cocaine hidden in coffee packets

Mumbai: A woman who landed at the Mumbai airport from Colombo was arrested for carrying 4.7 kg of cocaine, valued at nearly Rs 47 crore in the illicit market, in nine coffee packets, an official of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) said on Saturday. The DRI also apprehended four other members of the syndicate — one who had come to the airport to receive the consignment and three others linked to the financing, logistics, and distribution network of the smuggled narcotics, said the statement. All five accused have been arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, said the DRI. Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers intercepted the woman passenger shortly after her arrival and subjected her baggage to detailed examination, said the statement. The scrutiny led to the discovery of nine pouches of a white powdery substance cleverly concealed inside coffee packets, it said. Preliminary testing with the NDPS field kit confirmed the substance to be cocaine, it said. Calling it a major blow to international drug trafficking networks, the DRI said it has launched an investigation to uncover the wider transnational syndicate orchestrating the smuggling attempt. Some of the recent seizures by DRI indicate a concerning trend wherein international drug syndicates are increasingly exploiting Indian women as couriers, while concealing narcotics within food items and everyday edibles to camouflage the contraband and evade detection. In a separate case, the DRI last month busted a major narcotics manufacturing and distribution network operating across the National Capital Region, arresting 26 foreign nationals and seizing large quantities of heroin, cocaine, and amphetamine valued at Rs 108.81 crore in the illicit international market. In total, 16.27 kg of amphetamine, 7.9 kg of cocaine, 1.8 kg of heroin, 2.13 kg of ganja, and 115.42 kg of precursor chemicals — collectively valued at approximately Rs 108.81 crore — were seized during the course of the operation. The coordinated multi-day operation was conducted between October 21 and 23, said an official statement.

India slams Pakistan at UN over ‘grave’ rights abuses in occupied Kashmir

United Nations: In a strong message to Pakistan exposing its "hypocrisy", India has demanded that it end the “grave” human rights abuses as its forces suppress the people’s open revolt in areas of Kashmir it illegally occupies. “In the last few weeks alone, the occupying Pakistani forces and their proxies have killed many innocent civilians who are agitating for their basic rights and freedoms” in parts of Kashmir in occupies”, Bhavika Managalanandan, a First Secretary at India’s UN Mission, said on Friday. "We call upon Pakistan to stop the grave and ongoing human rights violations in the areas illegally occupied by it, where the population is an open revolt against Pakistan's military occupation, repression, brutality and illegal exploitation of resources”, she said at the General Assembly dismissing Islamabad’s diatribes. Drawing attention to Pakistan’s diplomats flinging vicious allegations against India at every opportunity to speak at the UN regardless of the context of the discussions, Managalanandan said, “Repetitive allegations and lies change neither reality nor the truth”. “Pakistan's double speak and hypocrisy does not deserve the time and attention of this august forum”, she said. Mangalanandan spoke of the people of Kashmir participating in elections as vindication of India’s democracy. “We reject attempts by Pakistan to denigrate the people of India and the Democratic choices regularly exercised, including by the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” and “the social and economic progress experienced by them is evident for all to see”. She added, “It is unfortunate that Pakistan has resorted to subversion of the principle of self-determination by resorting to false equivalences”. Pakistan often claims that the Security Council asked for a plebiscite in Kashmir, but, in fact, the Council in its Resolution 47 of April 1948, ordered Pakistan to withdraw its troops and citizens from all of Kashmir. But Islamabad continues the illegal occupation in violation of the Council's demand. “Let me reiterate the union territories of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh are an integral and inalienable part of India”, Mangalanandan said. Reiterating India’s commitment to human rights, she said it “stems from our freedom struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi, which emphasised non-violence and equality”. The Gandhian legacy is enshrined in the Constitution, and “India's domestic framework for human rights protection continues to evolve and strengthen”, she said, adding that India has adopted progressive legislation and programmes to safeguard fundamental rights. The judiciary has expanded human rights protection, while the Human Rights Commissions at the national and state levels provide the framework for rights protection, she added.

Pakistan: Another ‘information blackout’ in Balochistan as mobile internet suspended for 24 hours

Quetta, Oct 31 (IANS) The Balochistan government on Friday suspended mobile data services in Quetta for 24 hours due to the “peculiar law and order situation”, local media reported. In a letter sent on Thursday, the Balochistan government requested Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior that the relevant authorities be directed to suspend 3G/4G internet services in Quetta on October 31 for 24 hours, Pakistan’s leading daily Dawn reported. The letter stated, “Owing to the peculiar law and order situation and threat perceptions, the services of 3G and 4G services are required to be jammed in district Quetta.” The suspension comes two months after mobile data services in Balochistan were suspended in August citing “security reasons.” However, the Balochistan High Court (BHC) had ordered the immediate restoration of mobile internet services. Education, online businesses and media reporting had faced widespread disruptions in Balochistan due to the suspension of internet services in August. Officials had said that the decision was taken on the security agencies’ recommendation, keeping in view rising tensions, especially around National Day celebrations in Pakistan. Students, business owners, journalists, and human rights organisations had criticised the government’s decision, The Balochistan Post reported. Students enrolled in online classes had said that they were not able to attend lectures or submit assignments, with the situation more severe in rural areas, where students already have limited educational resources. Freelancers and entrepreneurs in Quetta, Turbat, Khuzdar and Panjgur had reported that their livelihoods was brought to a standstill due to the suspension of internet services. One business owner said: “Our entire work depends on the internet; this shutdown has pushed us to the brink of financial collapse.” Media outlets were also majorly affected with journalists saying that they are not able to share reports from the region, resulting in what some termed an “information blackout,” as per the report. Local political and social organisations had accused the government of imposing collective punishment on the public instead of improving security in the region. Earlier in January, a report revealed that Pakistan was leading the world in terms of facing economic losses due to internet outages and shutdowns. Pakistan stood at the first spot with a total financial impact of USD 1.62 billion.

No one can do politics by hurting people’s faith: Manoj Tiwari slams Mahagathbandhan

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and star campaigner Manoj Tiwari launched a sharp attack on the Mahagathbandhan on Friday, accusing the Opposition alliance of “repeatedly insulting” the faith and cultural sentiments of Hindus. He said that politics cannot be done by “hurting people’s religious beliefs.” Before heading for his roadshow in Khagaria, Tiwari said, “No one can do politics by hurting anyone’s faith. The Mahagathbandhan is hurting religious sentiments, insulting the Ram Temple, Lord Krishna’s Mathura, Kashi, and the Sanatan faith. Rahul Gandhi called Chhath a ‘drama’ — I want to ask Tejashwi Yadav if he will now separate himself from Rahul Gandhi on this issue.” The actor-turned-politician, known for his strong connect with Bihar’s cultural roots, further added that he had personally advised Bhojpuri actor Khesari Lal Yadav “not to oppose the Ram Temple.” “Khesari is my younger brother, and he will always remain dear to me,” he said, while urging him to stand with people’s faith instead of those who disrespect it. Tiwari strongly condemned the Opposition’s alleged attempts to “mock” Hindu beliefs, saying, “The Mahagathbandhan continuously insults our temples and traditions. They are not only disrespecting the faith of crores of Hindus but also playing with the soul of India. I urge the people of Bihar to protect and preserve Bihar’s culture and faith.” On his ongoing campaign, the BJP MP said the weather had caused some disruptions in travel, but he was overwhelmed by the response from people online. “I couldn’t personally go to Banka and Purnea yesterday, so I addressed people there via Facebook. Surprisingly, that address has already been watched by over 600,000 people. The enthusiasm for the NDA is strong, and the Prime Minister will be visiting soon,” he said. Reiterating that Nitish Kumar remains the NDA’s chief ministerial candidate, Tiwari clarified, “From the very first day, Nitish Kumar has been the NDA’s CM face. Every leader formally endorses this through the legislative party and organisational process. This is a democratic and constitutional procedure, whoever leads our alliance becomes the Chief Minister, and the legislative party formally elects that person through due process.” Concluding his remarks, the BJP leader appealed to voters: “The people of Bihar have always valued faith, unity and progress. We pray to the people of Bihar to protect and build Bihar, not break it.”

GST reforms, festive season drive UPI payments, stimulate private consumption

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IANS) The spending through unified payments interface (UPI) during the festival period (Dussehra to Diwali) increased to Rs 17.8 lakh crore, up from Rs 15.1 lakh crore from the previous year, a report said on Friday. In September, UPI witnessed a seasonally unadjusted month-on-month (MoM) increase of 2.6 per cent in value terms, the report from Bank of Baroda said. The UPI saw 31 per cent transaction count growth (year-on-year) at 19.63 billion in the month of September — with 21 per cent growth in transaction amount at Rs 24.90 lakh crore, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data showed. Month-wise too, UPI witnessed a growth in transaction amount, from Rs 24.85 lakh crore in August. Payments data for the Dussehra-to-Diwali period showed that the total value of UPI, debit, and credit card payments reached approximately Rs 18.8 lakh crore — from 16.4 lakh crore in the previous year The GST 2.0 stimulus, aligned with the festival period, is expected to boost household spending and has coincided with a significant increase in digital retail payments, indicating a revival in consumption, the report said. The government estimates that the GST cut could increase consumer spending by approximately Rs 20 lakh crore, the bank mentioned. The payment in value terms through debit card during this festival month went to Rs 65,395 crore, up from Rs 27,566 crore the previous year. In contrast, credit card values reflected more cautious usage during the same period, the bank said. During the festive period average spending per transaction for UPI was Rs 1,052 whereas for debit card it was Rs 8,084 and for credit card at Rs 1,932, Bank of Baroda said. Small to mid-valued segment of consumption demand is likely to get a fillip looking at the spending statistics, the bank projected. Merchant-level UPI data for September indicated over 50 per cent growth in average spend per transaction for men’s and women’s clothing, package shops, beer, wine and liquor, online marketplaces, electronics, beauty and barber shops. “We expect private consumption demand to report a buoyant print in Q2. The trend will also persist in Q3,” the bank forecasted.

Meanwhile, Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), State Bank of India, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Kotak Mahindra Bank were the key gainers that helped limit the market’s losses. Broader market indices showed little movement, with the Nifty MidCap index edging down 0.02 per cent and the Nifty SmallCap index rising marginally by 0.02 per cent. On the other hand, Nifty Realty was the biggest loser of the day, followed by IT, Energy, Financial Services, FMCG, Pharma, and Consumer Durables, which all ended in the red. Analysts said the decline was driven by profit booking after recent market highs and a cautious mood among investors ahead of key global and domestic economic data releases. "The domestic market remained volatile in negative terrain and ended flat, weighed down by profit booking on monthly expiry and weak global cues,” experts stated. “Notably, buying interest emerged at lower levels, reflecting underlying investor confidence. Market sentiment is expected to be supported by easing global trade tensions and expectations of an upgrade in domestic corporate earnings, which continue to reinforce resilience," analysts mentioned.

Rohit Sharma Credits Extended Preparation Ahead of IND vs AUS ODI 2025 Tour of Australia (Watch Video)

Mumbai, October 27: Senior India opener Rohit Sharma said he will give a lot of credit to the extended preparation he had before coming on the ODI tour of Australia, which culminated in him hitting a match-winning 121 in the nine-wicket win in the third and final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Having retired from Tests and T20Is, it meant Rohit hadn’t got much game time behind him, especially after not playing a game post IPL 2025 campaign for the Mumbai Indians. Ahead of ODIs against Australia, Rohit also lost the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill. Rohit Sharma spent a lot of time working on his fitness and losing almost 10 kgs in a demanding regime, as well as being on a strict nutrition routine. He also worked on refining his skillsets at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru and under former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar in his hometown Mumbai. Rohit Sharma Interview After India vs Australia ODI Series View this post on Instagram A post shared by Team India (@indiancricketteam) “Since the time I started playing, I never had four to five months to prepare for a series. So I wanted to utilise that. I wanted to do things on my way, in my own terms, and that actually worked out pretty well for me. Understanding what I need to do for the rest of my career.” “It was important to utilise that time because, like I said, never had such time in my hand. So I wanted to utilise that time and I prepared pretty well back home. Obviously, the conditions back home and here are not ideal. It's a massive difference between the two countries, but I've come here so many times. So it was just about getting into that rhythm and understanding what I need to do here.” Rohit Sharma's 'One Last Time' Post After Starring in IND vs AUS 2025 ODI Series Triggers Retirement Talk on Social Media. “So, I give a lot of credit to how I prepped before coming here, giving a lot of time to myself first. That was very important because sometimes you've got to understand that there's so much to do in life besides what you do professionally. But I got a lot of time in my hand, so I utilised that.” “Like I said, I could do things on my own terms, on my own time, which actually really helped me. Very, very grateful, firstly, to have people standing beside you. I'm pretty grateful to that,” said Rohit, who took Player of the Match award in the third ODI and also got Player of the Series honour, in a video posted on bcci.tv on Sunday. He also praised the Australian crowds for their consistent support and acknowledged the atmosphere created by fans during the series, in what was also his likely final international appearance in the country. In Australia, the crowd never disappoints. They come out in large numbers to watch cricket because two good teams playing, they want to watch quality cricket. That is what you get with these two teams.” “Unfortunately, like I said, we couldn't cross the line with the series, but we enjoyed coming here, playing here. Really, really grateful to the crowd for their support throughout Australia. They've been superb. I hope they continue to do that. We've got a T20I series that is coming up (starting on October 29), and I hope they continue to do that with each one of them who are going to be representing the country. It's a great occasion, and I wish them the best,” he concluded.
