Rishabh Pant, Anshul Kamboj help India A clinch 3-wicket win in first unofficial Test

Bengaluru: Rishabh Pant‘s (90) and Anshul Kamboj’s late strike of an unbeaten 37 guided India A to a composed three-wicket win against South Africa A in the first unofficial Test Sunday, which was played here at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 1. After being set a 275-run target to chase in the final innings, India A captain Rishabh Pant and lower-order batters shone with the bat as the hosts pulled off a win under pressure. With that, they now lead the two-match series 1-0. Batting first, South Africa A put up 309 runs in 91.2 overs before the Indian bowlers dished them out. Jordan Hermann, Zubayr Hamza, and Rubin Hermann stood out in the innings and scored half-centuries, while Tiaan van Vuuren supported with a well-made 46. Tanush Kotian was the pick of the bowlers for India, as he finished with a four-wicket haul. Batting next, India were bowled out for 234 runs in 58 overs, courtesy of Prenelan Subrayen’s five-wicket haul, and handed a 75-run lead to the visitors. However, the Proteas couldn’t replicate their performances from the first innings and could only extend their lead to 274, adding 199 runs on board in 48.1 overs, as the hosts set themselves a 275-run target. India’s start to the chase wasn’t how they expected, as the top order lineup of Sai Sudharsan, Ayush Mhatre and Devdutt Padikkal was dismissed in quick succession. However, Pant resurrected the innings with a fine 90(113) and carried his side’s momentum. Ayush Badoni joined hands with Pant as the duo stitched a composed partnership to start Day 4’s proceedings before the latter was dismissed. Pant and Badoni’s wickets added pressure on India, but lower-order batters Tanush Kotian, Manav Suthar and Kamboj pulled off the chase with brisk scores. While Kotian scored a quick 30-ball 23, Kamboj took charge of the fireworks as he notched up four fours and two maximums to score an unbeaten 37. Suthar supported him well from the other end as India chased down the total in 73.1 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Brief Scores: India A 234 & 277-7 in 73.1 overs (Rishabh Pant 90, Anshul Kamboj 37; Tiaan van Vuuren 3-56, Tshepo Moreki 2-33) beat South Africa A 309 & 199 all out in 48.1 overs (Lesego Senokwane 37, Zubayr Hamza 37; Tanush Kotian 4-26, Anshul Kamboj 3-39) by three wickets.

3rd T20I: Jitesh, Arshdeep & Washington come in as India opt to bowl first against Australia

Hobart: Jitesh Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, and Washington Sundar have been included in India’s playing eleven, as skipper Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and elected to bowl first in the third T20I against Australia at Bellerive Oval Sunday. India is seeking a series-levelling win in what is also their first-ever T20I game in Hobart, while Australia is looking to go 2-0 up in the five-match series. After winning the toss, Suryakumar said Jitesh, Arshdeep, and Washington come in place of Sanju Samson, Harshit Rana, and Kuldeep Yadav in the playing eleven. “The ball will come on nicely to the bat in the 2nd innings. Happy to take it one game at a time,” he said. Australia captain Mitchell Marsh stated that seamer Sean Abbott will replace Josh Hazlewood in the playing eleven. Hazlewood has been rested from the remainder of the series to mainly concentrate on Ashes preparations. Abbott, meanwhile, took figures of 3-25 from four overs in his most recent T20I against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui. It also means that Glenn Maxwell will have to wait to return to the Australian team after recovering from a wrist injury. “It’s a belter of a wicket. Want to get off to a good start and post a big total,” he said. Former Australia captain Aaron Finch described the pitch as “beautiful batting conditions”. With hot and windy weather and small boundaries on offer, Finch has predicted a high-scoring contest at the venue. Supreme Court to hear stray dog case November 3

New Delhi: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear November 3 the case concerning stray dogs in which it had directed the chief secretaries of all the states and Union Territories, except West Bengal and Telangana, to remain present before it. While hearing the matter October 27, the top court had directed the chief secretaries to remain present before it November 3 to explain why compliance affidavits were not filed despite the court’s August 22 order. The apex court August 22, asked the states and UTs about the steps being taken for compliance of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules. The matter is slated to come up for hearing on Monday before a three-judge special bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and N V Anjaria. October 31, the top court refused to exempt the chief secretaries of states and UTs from appearing before it physically on November 3, saying there was no respect for the court’s order. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had mentioned the matter and urged the bench that the chief secretaries be allowed to appear before the court virtually. The bench had expressed displeasure over the non-compliance of its August 22 order and observed that by October 27, compliance affidavits were not filed by the states and UTs, except West Bengal, Telangana and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). It had made clear that the chief secretaries would have to appear in the court and explain why no compliance affidavits were filed by them. The bench had said when the matter was taken up for hearing October 27, compliance affidavits were filed only by West Bengal, Telangana and MCD. October 27, the top court slammed the states and UTs, which had not filed their compliance affidavits in the matter, and said continuous incidents were happening and the country was being shown as down in foreign nations. The apex court had earlier expanded the scope of the stray dogs case beyond the confines of Delhi-National Capital Region, and directed that all states and UTs be made parties in the matter. It had directed the municipal authorities to file an affidavit of compliance with complete statistics of resources like dog pounds, veterinarians, dog-catching personnel, and specially-modified vehicles and cages available as of the date for the purpose of compliance with the ABC Rules. The bench had also impleaded the states and UTs in the matter while observing that the application of the ABC Rules was uniform all over India. The apex court is hearing a suo motu case, which was initiated July 28 over a media report on stray dog bites leading to rabies, particularly among children, in the national capital.

Telangana man kills wife, daughter, sister-in-law before suicide

Hyderabad: In a shocking incident, a man in Telangana’s Vikarabad district murdered three of his family members, including his wife and daughter, before committing suicide, police said Sunday. The incident occurred at Kulkacherla village on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. Police said Vepuri Yadaiah, 38, hacked his wife Aluvelu, 32, daughter Aparna, 13, and sister-in-law Hanumamma, 40, to death with an axe when they were asleep. His elder daughter, Apoorva, 16, escaped from the house when he tried to attack her. She sustained injuries to her head and hand. After killing the three, Yadaiah hanged himself to death in the house. Alerted by the locals, police reached the spot and shifted the bodies to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Preliminary investigation by the police shows that a domestic dispute led to the gruesome murders and suicide. According to police, Yadaiah and his wife had some issues last week, and they were frequently quarrelling. Village and family elders had counselled the couple to resolve the issue. Apoorva, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital, said her father had an argument with her mother on Saturday evening. Some family members, along with village elders, called Yadaiah and pulled him up for not mending his ways. Yadaiah’s sister-in-law also came to the house to take her sister and children to her home the next day. Yadaiah, who was irked over being reprimanded by the family members and village elders, did not have dinner. When all family members were asleep, Yadaiah attacked them with an axe. Apoorva said he first attacked their aunt, and when their mother tried to save her, he attacked her too. After killing both their aunt and mother, he turned to his daughters and asked how they would live. Apoorva said he attacked them with the same axe. While Aparna died on the spot, Apoorva managed to escape with injuries. A case has been registered at Kulkacherla Police Station. Police said they were conducting further investigation.

Court intervention leads to Centre allotting official residence to Kejriwal

New Delhi: After the Centre allotted Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal a Type-VII bungalow in the capital, the party confirmed that the former Delhi chief minister will stay at the 95, Lodhi Estate accommodation, which was allocated to him after the Delhi High Court rapped the Centre on the issue. Kejriwal has been allotted an official bungalow by the Centre after it was scolded by the Delhi High Court. He was entitled to a bungalow since he is the convener of a national party, AAP national media in-charge Anurag Dhanda told PTI Videos. Last month, the Delhi High Court pulled up the Centre for delaying its decision in allotting a residential accommodation to Kejriwal in the national capital. Kejriwal lived in an accommodation on 6, Flagstaff Road in Civil Lines while he was the chief minister. The BJP had made it a big election issue in Delhi, calling the house Sheesh Mahal, and vowing that its chief minister will not stay there. After resigning as chief minister, Kejriwal shifted to a government bungalow allotted to AAP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal. In 2022, the Delhi government’s vigilance department initiated an inquiry, on the direction of Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, into allegations of “irregularities and cost escalation in the renovation of the Civil Lines bungalow by the PWD. Currently, the CBI is probing the matter on the complaint of the then Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, which was filed with Saxena in December 2024.

Change in power, not in politics: Bengal’s violence remains unchecked

Kolkata: When electors in West Bengal bid adieu to the Left Front government after an uninterrupted rule of about 34 years, one of the major accusations against the communists was their acts of repression and subjugation against the Opposition. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself has spoken of those days of terror on several occasions, where she has claimed to have been the target. “I could have died that day,” she would end many such renditions of ordeals. Unfortunately, the state still remains in the grips of hooligans, where many such acts are passed off as “spontaneous” and “public outrage”. Similar words were heard when video footage surfaced Monday, October 6, of an injured Maldaha Uttar (North Malda) MP Khagen Murmu, with blood covering his face. Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh, accompanying him, also suffered injuries, with his clothes torn. The BJP leaders were visiting the flood-affected areas in North Bengal when they were attacked by locals at Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri district. The footage showed the car vandalised, its windshield shattered, and the occupants trying to flee. On the way, Ghosh exhibited pieces of stone and sticks that smashed the window-glasses. “The manner in which our Party colleagues, including a sitting MP and MLA, were attacked in West Bengal for serving the people affected by floods and landslides is outright appalling. It highlights the insensitivity of the TMC as well as the absolutely pathetic law and order situation in the state,” posted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X. “I wish the West Bengal Government and TMC were more focused on helping people rather than indulging in violence in such a challenging situation. I call upon BJP Karyakartas to continue working among the people and assist the ongoing rescue operations,” he urged. Earlier, there was widespread condemnation when the 2023 Panchayat elections in West Bengal were marred by widespread violence, raising serious concerns about the state of grassroots democracy in the region. Bombs were hurled, vehicles torched, and clashes erupted between rival party workers. The violence extended to nomination days and continued through polling. At least a dozen people were reported dead on polling day, including workers from all major political parties. Television screens and video footage on social media showed ballot boxes damaged, drowned in ponds, or set ablaze, even as reports said several ballot boxes were stolen as armed skirmishes erupted in several districts. Political parties accused each other of orchestrating the violence, with TMC claiming its workers were being targeted, while BJP and others demanded President’s Rule on failure of law and order. In December 2020, BJP President J.P. Nadda’s convoy came under attack when he was on his way to address a public meeting in South 24 Paraganas. Several BJP leaders, including Kailash Vijayvargiya and former Mamata confidante Mukul Roy, were injured when protesters pelted stones at their vehicles at West Bengal’s Diamond Harbour. Diamond Harbour is a Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Abhishek Banerjee, the Chief Minister’s nephew and TMC all-India General Secretary. In August this year, some vehicles — including the one being used by the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, came under attack at Khagrabari in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district. Speaking on the incident, Adhikari referred to it as a “targeted attack”. In similar incidents, the present BJP state unit president Shamik Bhattacharya and his predecessor, Dilip Ghosh, have come under attack in separate incidents. Amidst this violence, the state government can’t shake off its responsibilities, claiming “public outrage” since law and order is its responsibility and the Chief Minister herself is the minister for state Home Affairs too. And the TMS as an organisation can’t shrug it off as an “administrative issue”; it has to restrain the grassroots workers through its command chain.

‘She turns into snake, chases me’: Man’s wild claim stuns Sitapur authorities

Sitapur: A bizarre complaint in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district has left officials surprised after a man alleged that his wife “turns into a snake at night” and tries to bite him. The incident came to light during Samadhan Diwas (Public Grievance Day) in the Mahmoodabad area, when residents usually raise issues related to civic amenities. Meraj, a resident of Lodhsa village, appeared before the District Magistrate claiming that his wife, Naseemun, transforms into a serpent at night and attempts to attack him. He alleged that his wife had tried to kill him multiple times and had once bitten him. “My wife tortures me mentally and could kill me any night while I’m asleep,” Meraj reportedly said, adding that she often chases him around the house “after turning into a serpent.” Also Read: UP: Tensions escalate in Barabanki, Mau districts after Bareilly clashes; forces deployed Taking note of the complaint, the District Magistrate directed the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and police officials to investigate the matter.
