Kyle Jamieson, Ish Sodhi return as New Zealand announce T20I squad for West Indies series

Auckland [New Zealand], November 2 (ANI): The New Zealand Cricket Team have included fast bowler Kyle Jamieson and spinner Ish Sodhi as New Zealand announced the T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against the West Indies. Uncapped Wellington Firebirds all-rounder Nathan Smith has also been included in the 14-strong squad and could be in line to make his T20I debut after featuring in squads against Sri Lanka home and away last season, according to a press release from New Zealand Cricket. Jamieson returns from the side injury that ruled him out of the ODI series against England, while Sodhi is back in the T20I squad after featuring against Australia at the Mount in early October. The upcoming five-game series will be the Blackcaps' final T20I matches before coach Rob Walter names his preliminary squad to contest the ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February 2026. Matt Henry, who missed the final two ODIs against England with a calf strain, will miss the West Indies T20 series to undergo a pre-planned conditioning block to ensure he is ready for the ODI and Test series. Kane Williamson wasn't considered for selection after earlier today announcing his retirement from T20 International cricket. The West Indies touch down in New Zealand on Sunday night and will take on the Kiwis in five T20Is, three ODIs, and a three-Test series, which runs up until Christmas. New Zealand coach Rob Walter welcomed the returns of Jamieson, Smith and Sodhi. 'Kyle's been back bowling this week and is tracking nicely for this series.' Nathan's made an impressive start to his international career in the Test and ODI formats, and we back him to do the job if he gets his T20 chance in this series. Nathan's made an impressive start to his international career in the Test and ODI formats, and we back him to do the job if he gets his T20 chance in this series,' he said, as quoted by the New Zealand Cricket press release. 'Ish is our most capped T20I player, and it's always great to be able to add his skills, energy and experience to the group. Matt has played every game for the BLACKCAPS since the tour to Zimbabwe in July - so it's the right moment for him to have a short break, and the fact he will also get some time to rehab his calf is another upside,' he added. Walter said that his side will be looking forward to the upcoming five-game series. 'It's great to have five opportunities to take on a dangerous side like the West Indies. I know the team is looking forward to getting into the rhythm of a full series and building some momentum following the rain-affected series to start the summer. The T20 World Cup is coming closer and will obviously be part of people's thinking, but we need to make sure our focus is on the series at home and playing well in front of our home fans,' he concluded. New Zealand squad: Mitchell Santner (c), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Rachin Ravindra, Tim Robinson, Tim Seifert, Nathan Smith, Ish Sodhi. Series schedule: First T20I: Auckland, November 5.Second T20I: Auckland, November 6.Third T20I: Nelson, November 9.Fourth T20I: Nelson, November 10.Fifth T20I: Dunedin, November 13. (ANI)

Focus should be on Ukraine settlement work, not on Putin-Trump meeting — Peskov

MOSCOW, November 2. /TASS/. What is required now is thorough work on the issues surrounding a settlement in Ukraine, rather than the rapid organization of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS in response to a question about the possibility of promptly preparing in-person talks between the two leaders. According to the Kremlin representative, there is currently no need for such a summit. "At this moment, what is needed is very meticulous work on the details of the settlement problem," Peskov noted. The presidents of Russia and the United States had agreed to hold a meeting in Budapest and to begin preparations for it following their conversation on October 16. However, on October 23 Trump unexpectedly announced that the summit would be postponed indefinitely, stating that he would not be able to achieve "what is necessary" by the planned dates. Putin has indicated that the meeting in Budapest has more likely been postponed than canceled, and that it was the United States that initiated the summit. The future of personal contacts at the highest level will therefore depend on the American side, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has emphasized.

Deepti Sharma's parents back Team India to lift ICC Women's World Cup title

Agra (Uttar Pradesh) [India], November 2 (ANI): As India gear up to face South Africa in the ICC Women's World Cup final, the parents of all-rounder Deepti Sharma expressed confidence in the team's chances and backed their daughter to deliver a strong performance in the high-stakes clash. Hosts India Women will lock horns with South Africa Women in the final of the ICC Women's World Cup 2025 at Navi Mumbai's DY Patil Stadium on Sunday, with the tournament guaranteed to crown a new champion. The winner at the DY Patil Stadium will lift the coveted Women's Cricket World Cup trophy for the first time in their history. It will also be the first Women's Cricket World Cup final that will not feature Australia or England, according to Olympics.com. Sunday's title clash will be India's third time in the Women's World Cup final. India lost to Australia by 98 runs in the 2005 final and suffered a dramatic late collapse in 2017 against England to lose by nine runs. Deepti Sharma's father, Bhagwan Sharma, expressed confidence in the team's chances and said he believes India will lift the trophy. 'I am confident our Indian women's cricket team will win the World Cup... All players will play well; they've already beaten Australia, so they will beat South Africa today. I want to tell Deepti she's an all-rounder and needs to excel in batting, bowling, and fielding. We have faith, and she will perform her best today,' Bhagwan Sharma told ANI. Deepti Sharma's mother, Sushilaa Sharma, also expressed confidence in the team's success and said she believes her daughter will deliver a strong performance in the title clash. 'Just as winning every single mark in studies is crucial, every single run in the match matters. Our children often make the mistake of letting opponents hit fours early, and they keep giving up runs. They should focus on scoring runs from the start, even just one run at a time. Ultimately, this will lead to scoring many runs. We must win today at all costs. Deepti will perform exceptionally well. I've nurtured her from within, and when she has the bat and ball in her hands, everyone will see her game,' Sushilaa Sharma said. Deepti Sharma has been one of India's standout performers in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup 2025. In the tournament so far, she has played eight matches, taking 17 wickets with best bowling figures of 4 for 51 and maintaining an economy rate of 5.70. With the bat, Deepti has also made valuable contributions, scoring 157 runs from six innings, including two half-centuries, at an impressive average of around 87.22. (ANI)

Overall, during the summer season from April through October, the EU purchased a record 82.5 bln cubic meters of LNG. In October, LNG flows from European terminals into the EU gas transmission system amounted to around 12.6 bln cubic meters, or 11% higher than in September and 43% above the level recorded in October 2024. In total, over the first 10 months of the year, LNG deliveries from terminals into Europe’s gas transmission network remained at a record level, exceeding 116.5 bln cubic meters - 28% more than in the same period of 2024. Over the summer period from April through October, Europe imported LNG at record volumes, with total supplies to the region surpassing 82.5 bln cubic meters, according to TASS calculations. The previous record for LNG imports was set in 2023. Supplies from the North Sea (primarily Norwegian gas) ranked second with a 29.6% share, while gas supplies from North Africa accounted for 10.3%. This share exceeded imports from the East (Russian pipeline gas, gas supplied via Ukraine, as well as volumes withdrawn by European companies from Ukrainian underground storage), which amounted to 6.8%. Gas supplies from the United Kingdom accounted for 4.7%, and those from Azerbaijan for 3.9%.

Q2 earnings, macro data, global trends key drivers for stock markets this week: Analysts

Quarterly earnings, macroeconomic data announcements and global trends will drive the Indian stock markets in a holiday-shortened week, analysts said. Stock markets would remain closed on Wednesday for the Guru Nanak Gurpurab holiday. “The holiday-shortened week is expected to remain eventful, with multiple key data releases and major corporate earnings lined up. On the macroeconomic front, attention will turn to the final readings of the HSBC manufacturing PMI, as well as the HSBC services and composite PMI data, which will offer cues on domestic growth momentum. “On the earnings front, several index heavyweights are set to announce their quarterly results, including Bharti Airtel, Titan Company, Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, InterGlobe Aviation, Mahindra & Mahindra, State Bank of India, Lupin, Bajaj Auto and Hindalco," Ajit Mishra- SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, said. Globally, developments related to trade deals and trends in major international markets will also be closely tracked for directional cues, he added. Trading activity of foreign investors would also be tracked by investors, an expert noted. Foreign investors turned net buyers with a net infusion of ₹14,610 crore in October after three months of withdrawal. “Markets are likely to take cues from a busy macro calendar this week, with a series of S&P global manufacturing and services PMI readings for India and major economies set to provide fresh insights into global growth momentum... These data points, along with movements in the Indian rupee against the dollar, will play a crucial role in shaping investor sentiment and sectoral trends," Ponmudi R, CEO - Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth tech firm, said. Last week, the BSE benchmark dropped 273.17 points or 0.32 per cent, and the NSE Nifty dipped 73.05 points or 0.28 per cent. Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said, "The Indian markets wrapped up the last week of October with profit-booking as investors took some chips off the table after the sustained rally." Looking ahead, the market will closely monitor the nations’ trade talks with the US and the ongoing corporate earnings season, which so far has delivered mixed results, he added. In the semi-finals on Thursday, India defied the odds to end Australia's reign as defending champions by pulling off a record run-chase of 339 runs in Navi Mumbai. Jemimah Rodrigues scored an unbeaten innings of 127 to guide India home. Harmanpreet Singh contributed with a vital 89. South Africa, meanwhile, will feature in their first-ever Women's ODI World Cup final. Laura Wolvaardt's commanding 169 powered them to 319/7 against England in their semi-final before Marizanne Kapp's career-best 5/20 sealed a 125-run win. Jemimah Rodrigues showed nerves of steel to drive India home against the mighty Australia in the semi-finals. She is among the top scorers in the Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 with 268 runs from six innings at an average of 67. She also scored 123 when India faced South Africa in a women's ODI match back in May. World No. 1 batter Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur have also been among the runs, while Deepti Sharma is the joint top wicket-taker in the tournament with 17 scalps. For South Africa, they will be heavily reliant on their skipper, Laura Wolvaardt. With 470 runs in eight innings at an average of 67, she is the tournament's leading scorer. Marizanne Kapp, Nonkululeko Mlaba and Nadine De Klerk have been South Africa's top wicket-takers, according to Olympics.com. India and South Africa have faced each other 34 times in women's ODIs, with India winning 20 and South Africa 13, while one match ended without a result. The two sides met earlier in the league stage, where the Proteas chased down 252 with three wickets in hand and seven balls to spare. However, India holds an edge at the DY Patil Stadium, remaining unbeaten in all three matches they have played at the venue during the 2025 World Cup. South Africa, on the other hand, will be playing at the ground for the first time in the tournament. (ANI)

Festive season drives petrol sales but diesel lag

India's petrol sales surged to a five-month high in October on festive travel boost, but diesel consumption remained flattish, defying the trend, according to preliminary industry data. Petrol consumption rose 7 per cent year-on-year to 3.65 million tonnes in October, as the onset of festival season increased demand for the fuel. The sales were higher month-on-month as well when compared to 3.4 million tonnes in September. Diesel - the most consumed fuel in the country, accounting for almost 40 per cent of the fuel consumption basket - posted a marginal drop in sales at 7.6 million tonnes in October compared to 7.64 million tonnes in the same month of the previous year. Historically, diesel consumption dipped with the advent of the rainy season in June, as demand for fuel to run irrigation pumps dropped and vehicular movements slowed. But sales rebounded from October as rains receded and the festive season fuelled a rise in trucking. But this year, the trend has been defied with October witnessing a marginal drop in consumption rather than a rise. While petrol consumption was 16.3 per cent more than in October 2023, diesel sales this year were lower than the 7.63 million tonnes of demand in October 2023, according to the monthly flash report of the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Jet fuel or ATF consumption continued to rebound, rising by 1.6 per cent to 7,69,000 tonnes in October. The sales were 11.11 per cent more than in October 2023. Since 2019, ATF consumption has grown at a 1.65 per cent CAGR. LPG sales were up 5.4 per cent at almost 3 million tonnes in October, as domestic cooking needs continued to fuel growth. One of the primary reasons for the surge is household demand for the fuel. India added 25 lakh new homes to the subsidised LPG supply scheme, PMUY, lifting the number of households covered to 10.58 crore from 10.33 crore. Petrol consumption in the first seven months of the current fiscal year, which started in April 2025, has risen by 6.8 per cent to 24.84 million tonnes, while diesel sales are up 2.45 per cent at 53.3 million tonnes. ATF consumption this fiscal is up 1 per cent to 5.2 million tonnes, and LPG demand has risen 7.2 per cent to 19.7 million tonnes. Published on November 2, 2025

Coal India chief calls for business overhaul to stay relevant amid changing energy landscape

Newly appointed Coal India Limited (CIL) Chairman Sanoj Kr Jha called for an "overhaul" of the state-run miner's business model and systems. He also emphasised on emerging production methods, stressing that the organisation must adapt swiftly to stay relevant amid the global shift towards renewable energy. "The world is not the same as it was 50 years ago, when coal was the primary source of energy. Renewable energy and many other competitors have come up," Jha said while addressing employees and stakeholders during CIL's 50th anniversary celebration in Kolkata on Saturday, marking his first day in the organisation. Jha, who is also Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Coal, said the sector is at a "turning point" and must evolve beyond traditional methods of operation. "We have to change our entire system, all of our current business models, and the method of production. The minister constantly reminds us that Coal India and all PSUs must come out of the mindset that they can continue working in the same way," he stated. The chairman noted that while CIL has already taken steps toward diversification over the last five to ten years, much more remains to be done. "The entire team is geared up to execute the vision of the minister and the Prime Minister, and we will meet the expectations regarding the new things happening in the country," he said. Outlining CIL's transformation roadmap, Jha identified three key strategic pillars — diversification beyond core mining, expansion of underground mining, and modernisation of logistics and technology. As part of diversification, CIL is focusing on coal gasification projects and renewable energy ventures, particularly solar and wind power. The company also plans to contribute to India's productivity and energy security through participation in the critical minerals sector, both domestically and abroad. Highlighting the company's plans to elevate underground mining, Jha said CIL is targeting 100 million tonnes of production from underground operations by 2035 through upgraded technology, new equipment, and enhanced manpower training. On operational modernisation, the chairman said CIL aims to mechanise almost all transport arrangements within the next four to five years under its First Mile Connectivity initiative. The company is also deploying advanced technologies such as surface miners, continuous miners, and an integrated command and control centre (ICCC) to improve efficiency and real-time monitoring across mines. Jha also reaffirmed CIL's commitment to sustainability, citing large-scale plantation drives and eco-restoration initiatives. "CIL will continue contributing to the country's growth, not just as a coal producer but as a responsible energy company aligned with the nation's evolving needs," he said. CIL, which remains India's largest energy supplier, currently meets around 55 per cent of the country's energy demand. The company’s production has grown nearly 10-fold since its inception in 1975. FIFA’s recognition came via a social media tribute, where they shared throwback videos compiling all 10 goals across their official accounts, accompanied by the caption: "10 goals in 7 matches for Nigeria. Emerging market stocks rose every month this year for first time since 1993

The emerging-market equity benchmark gained for a 10th consecutive month in October, as an artificial-intelligence boom and a weaker dollar drive capital inflows. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index has rallied every month from January to October — a feat last seen in 1993 — and is up around 30 per cent this year. On Friday, it fell 0.7 per cent but closed out the month with a 4 per cent gain. Multiple catalysts have driven that surge, including strong gains in many AI-focused Asian tech stocks and a weaker dollar prompting money managers to diversify beyond US assets. In China, targeted stimulus has helped bolster earnings estimates, fund flows and sentiment. “EM stocks are no longer simply banks, commodities and telecom,” said Sammy Suzuki, head of EM equities at AllianceBernstein in New York. “Tech, consumer, and medical sectors with more intellectual property content occupy much larger weights today.” Emerging-market assets were under “modest pressure” on Friday, however, as investors continued to digest the possibility of the Federal Reserve not lowering interest rates in December, according to Brendan McKenna, EM economist and FX strategist at Wells Fargo Securities in New York. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said there were “strongly differing views about how to proceed in December,” during a press conference following Wednesday’s rate decision. “If the Fed doesn’t cut in December or there is another unforeseen shock, EM is so stretched from a valuation perspective that the correction could be quite sharp,” McKenna said. “The new uncertainty is leading to modest profit taking in select asset classes.” Emerging-market stocks are outperforming their US peers for the first time in eight years, prompting money managers including Morgan Stanley to forecast the start of a multi-year rally. EM bonds also rose this month. The Bloomberg EM Sovereign Total Return Index of dollar bonds capped a seventh successive month of gains. The gauge for EMFX edged lower in October. Risk assets could also benefit from a perceived easing of tariff frictions, after a trade truce between China and the US. “The bottom line is that even though there has been little incremental detail, the optimistic tone of President Trump and the announcement of trade deals have helped remove some uncertainty this week,” Citigroup Inc. strategist Rohit Garg wrote in a note to clients. That “has further fueled risk-on sentiment in equities globally.” More stories like this are available on bloomberg.com Published on November 2, 2025

Meeting FY26 fiscal targets may be challenging amid weak tax growth: Union Bank of India

Achieving the full-year Financial Year 2026 (FY26) fiscal targets appears challenging amid subdued growth in corporate and income tax revenues, according to a report by the Union Bank of India. The reduced fiscal deficit target for FY26 was premised on strong tax collections, even as the government maintains its strong capital expenditure push to stimulate consumption and job creation. "The reduced fiscal deficit target for FY26 was premised on strong tax collections, while the government continues its robust capex push--essential for stimulating consumption and creating jobs. However, achieving the full-year FY26 fiscal math appears challenging amid subdued growth in corporate and income tax revenues," the report added. In April-September FY26, India's fiscal deficit reached ₹5.73 lakh crore (37 per cent of Budgetary Estimate), a 21 per cent year-on year increase from ₹4.75 lakh crore (30 per cent of RE) in the same period last year. The rise was primarily driven by higher capital expenditure in the first half of FY26, which outpaced revenue growth. Total expenditure grew 9 per cent year-on-year, while receipts rose by a modest 5.7 per cent. The government remains committed to reducing the fiscal deficit to 4.4 per cent of GDP in FY26, down from 4.8 per cent in FY25. However, weaker growth in direct tax receipts could make meeting fiscal goals difficult, the report added. Fiscal targets are specific, measurable goals set by a government for its budget, such as achieving a certain level for the fiscal deficit (the gap between government spending and revenue) or debt-to-GDP ratio. The report noted that the estimated ₹24,000 crore impact from GST reforms in the second half of FY26 may be absorbed through the GST compensation cess fund. The report added that strong GST collections in September--significantly higher than in August--indicate that the effect of GST rate cuts on overall fiscal arithmetic may remain contained. GST collections rose 9 per cent year-on-year in the month of September to ₹0.76 lakh crore, yet growth remained subdued at 5.8 per cent for H1FY26 (₹4.67 lakh crore). "Looking ahead, revenues may face a further setback due to reduction in GST rates," the report added. Additional support comes from higher-than-budgeted non-tax revenues and better-than-expected divestment proceeds, offering some cushion to the government's fiscal position. Non-tax revenues jumped 30.5 per cent year-on-year to ₹4.66 lakh crore (80 per cent of BE) in H1FY26, up from ₹3.57 lakh crore in H1FY25, driven largely by a robust RBI dividend of ₹2.6 lakh crore this fiscal, exceeding the budgeted ₹2.1 lakh crore. Trump to host al-Sharaa in first-ever visit by Syrian president to White House, official says

President Donald Trump will host Ahmad al-Sharaa for talks, a first-ever visit by a Syrian president to the White House, an administration official said Saturday. The official, who was not authorised to comment publicly about the yet to be formally announced engagement, said that the meeting is expected to take place Nov 10. Trump met with al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia in May in what was the first encounter between the two nations' leaders in 25 years. Syria continues to struggle to emerge from decades of international isolation. The meeting, on the sidelines of Trump's get-together with the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council, was seen as a major turn of events for a Syria that is still adjusting to life after the over 50-year, iron-gripped rule of the Assad family. Al-Sharaa once had a $10 million US bounty on his head. Under the nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Golani, al-Sharaa had ties to al-Qaida and joined insurgents battling US forces in Iraq before entering the Syrian war. He was even imprisoned by US troops there for several years. Al-Sharaa is expected during his visit to sign an agreement on joining the US-led coalition against ISIS, the official said. Al-Sharaa in the May meeting became the first Syrian leader to meet an American president since Hafez Assad met Bill Clinton in Geneva in 2000. The visit comes as Trump is urging Middle East allies to seize the moment to build a durable peace in the volatile region after Israel and Hamas earlier this month began implementing a ceasefire and hostage deal. That agreement aims to bring about a permanent end to the brutal two-year war in Gaza. The fragile ceasefire and hostage deal continues to hold, but the situation remains precarious. Israeli strikes in Gaza earlier this week killed 104 people, including dozens of women and children, the enclave's health authorities said. The strikes, the deadliest since the ceasefire began on Oct 10, marked the most serious challenge to the tenuous truce to date. The strikes came Tuesday night after Israel accused Hamas of killing a soldier and staging the discovery of a deceased hostage. News of the planned meeting between Trump and al-Sharaa was first reported by Axios. Published on November 2, 2025

The two sides met earlier in the league stage, where the Proteas chased down 252 with three wickets in hand and seven balls to spare. However, India hold an edge at the DY Patil Stadium, remaining unbeaten in all three matches they have played at the venue during the 2025 World Cup. South Africa, on the other hand, will be playing at the ground for the first time in the tournament. (ANI)

Finland’s region losing €1 million a day without Russian visitors – Bloomberg

Finland’s South Karelia has been losing an estimated €1 million ($1.2 million) in tourism income every day since the Nordic country closed its border with Russia, Bloomberg reported on Saturday. Finland shut all crossings along its 1,430km land border with Russia in late 2023, accusing Moscow of orchestrating an influx of migrants from Africa and the Middle East. Russia dismissed the allegation as “completely baseless.” For decades, South Karelia, which lies closer to St. Petersburg than to Helsinki, had enjoyed lucrative ties with Russia – from cross-border shopping and tourism to lumber imports and local jobs in the forest industry. The loss of Russian visitors has reportedly left hotels, shops, and restaurants deserted, dealing a heavy blow to the local economy. “Russian customers asked why we couldn’t stay open around the clock,” said Sari Tukiainen, whose store is set to close by year’s end due to falling sales. “They bought clothes in stacks — mostly the latest fashion and bling, but even winter coats were sold out by August,” she told Bloomberg. Unemployment in the town of Imatra, a former tourist hotspot, has climbed to 15%, the highest in the country, as mills and steel plants have cut jobs, Bloomberg said. Finland was part of the Russian Empire for around 110 years and, despite two wars with the Soviet Union between 1939 and 1944, maintained friendly ties with Moscow during the Cold War. Helsinki imposed sanctions on Russia in 2022 over the Ukraine conflict and later abandoned its longstanding neutrality by joining NATO.

Youth curfew imposed in DC following Halloween brawl

A limited five-night curfew has been imposed for all people under 18 in Washington, DC, following a large fight between groups of teenagers on Halloween. All minors must remain indoors from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., from Saturday through Wednesday. Mayor Muriel Bowser said the restrictions were introduced “in response to several weeks of disorderly juvenile behavior which endangered both themselves and others.” Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith established “special juvenile curfew zones” around Navy Yard, the U Street Corridor, Banneker Recreation Center, and Union Station. The measure comes after a video showing National Guard troops breaking up a brawl in the Navy Yard neighborhood went viral. According to police, several hundred young people gathered on Halloween in a park near the Navy Yard Metro Station, and at some point “many of the juveniles within the group began engaging in fights and disrupting the flow of traffic.” Five males aged between 14 and 18 were arrested, one of whom was carrying a knife. “The behavior displayed last night in Navy Yard is unacceptable, and MPD and our law enforcement partners will have an increased presence tonight to ensure this does not happen again,” Smith said.

Trump calls meeting with Xi a “G2” summit, reviving idea of a two-power world order

Trump calls meeting with Xi a “G2” summit, reviving idea of a two-power world order US President Donald Trump described his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Busan as “historic,” calling it a “G2” summit — a term that suggests shared global leadership between Washington and Beijing. “My G2 meeting with President Xi of China was a great one for both of our countries. This meeting will lead to everlasting peace and success. God bless both China and the USA!” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth. The expression “G2” drew immediate attention from international analysts, who see it as a signal of Trump’s recognition of China’s global influence, even as Beijing continues to promote multilateralism in world affairs. “Trump’s mention of the ‘G2’ concept indicates that he acknowledges the equal position of China and the US,” said Jianlu Bi, a Beijing-based political analyst. “But China firmly safeguards multilateralism and advocates that global affairs should be jointly managed by the international community rather than dominated by two countries.” The Busan meeting — the first between the two leaders since 2019 — produced agreements to reduce fentanyl-related tariffs and maintain the supply of critical rare earth minerals. Trump called the 100-minute dialogue “amazing,” describing Xi as “a tremendous leader of a very powerful country,” and announced plans to visit China in April. I just spoke to President Trump, and we agree — the relationship between the United States and China has never been better. Following President Trump’s historic meeting with Chairman Xi in South Korea, I had an equally positive meeting with my counterpart, China’s Minister of… — Pete Hegseth (@PeteHegseth) November 1, 2025 Following the summit, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth echoed Trump’s message in a post on X, writing that “the relationship between the United States and China has never been better.” Hegseth revealed that he had also met with China’s Minister of National Defense, Admiral Dong Jun, in Malaysia, and that both sides agreed to establish “military-to-military channels to deconflict and deescalate any problems that arise.” His remarks were seen as an attempt to signal a thaw in military communication after years of high tension. The “G2” phrasing marks a rhetorical shift for Trump, who during his first term pursued a confrontational approach toward Beijing. The meeting signals an attempt to cool tensions after years of trade disputes and technological decoupling between the world’s two largest economies.
