“Southern Charm” Alum Kathryn Dennis Sued by Driver Who Claims He Was Injured in 2024 DUI Crash

Kathryn Dennis is being sued following her 2024 DUI arrest. The Southern Charm alum, 34, was named in a lawsuit filed in August by a man who claims he was injured in a collision involving three vehicles on May 20, 2024, in Goose Creek, South Carolina. Dennis — who was booked in Berkeley County, S.C., earlier this month and sentenced to 30 days in jail, per NBC Affiliate News 2 and Page Six — is facing a lawsuit from a driver who says he "suffered serious bodily injury, pain and suffering, and mental anguish" as a result of a crash she allegedly caused, per a complaint obtained by PEOPLE. The driver claims he was behind the wheel of a 2012 Honda in May 2024 when the reality star (who was allegedly driving a 2018 GMC pickup truck) "failed to slow her vehicle" and struck a 2017 Nissan pickup truck in the rear. That car, "in turn, caused the Nissan to strike the Plaintiff’s vehicle in the rear," per the document filed on Aug. 14. PEOPLE reached out to Dennis for comment on Tuesday, Oct. 7, but did not receive an immediate response. A lawyer for the plaintiff declined PEOPLE's request for comment. "As a result of said accident, which was solely due to the negligent and wanton, willful recklessness of the Defendant in that she made the conscious decision to drive a motor vehicle on a public roadway while under the influence and intoxication of alcoholic beverages, and/or other controlled substance(s), the Plaintiff suffered serious bodily injury, pain and suffering and mental anguish, and will continue to do so in the future. Further, that the Plaintiff’s vehicle suffered property damage," the complaint reads. The complaint also alleges that Dennis did not maintain proper lookout, did not keep her vehicle under proper control, did not apply her brakes, and did not utilize the last clear chance, in addition to driving under the influence. In the complaint, the driver said he's asking for “just and proper” relief in relation to “property damage, punitive damages,” as well as “the costs of this action.” Per the Supreme Court of South Carolina's online database, Dennis’ insurance company, State Farm, was later added as a co-defendant in September before denying the allegations. On May 20, 2024, Dennis was initially stopped by the Goose Creek Police Department (GCPD) in South Carolina just after 10 p.m., per a press release provided by authorities at the time. A responding officer told a colleague that Dennis was "possibly impaired" upon stopping her, and another officer wrote in a report that she "had glossy eyes and an odor of alcohol coming from her." She was then arrested for driving under the influence. On Friday, Oct. 3, according to public records from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office (BSCO), Dennis was later booked in Berkeley County, S.C., on charges of driving under the influence and transporting a container of alcohol in a motor vehicle with the seal broken. Dennis' 2024 incident came less than a year after a vehicle registered in her name was involved in an alleged hit-and-run incident in South Carolina in October 2023, as PEOPLE confirmed at the time. A source told PEOPLE that the star was involved in the alleged incident, though the South Carolina Highway Patrol did not confirm who was driving the car.

Skydiver Killed in Paragliding Crash Died Due to Human Error After He ‘Fell into a Spiral’ and Couldn’t ‘Get Out’: Prosecutor

Skydiver Felix Baumgartner, who died in a paragliding incident in Italy in mid-July, was killed as a result of human error, officials said this week. The fatal incident occurred July 17 as Baumgartner flew above Porto Sant'Elpidio, but then "lost control" of his paraglider, U.K. newspaper The Independent reported at the time, noting the 56-year-old plummeted to the ground close to a swimming pool at a resort. An investigating prosecutor told the Associated Press on Tuesday, Oct. 7, that there appear to have been no problems with the paraglider itself. The AP credited German news outlet dpa for first publishing the prosecutor's findings. “He fell into a spiral, and he could not get out. He was unable to do the maneuver that he should have done to exit,” Raffaele Iannella told the AP, which also reported that Iannella will soon move to close the case. According to the AP and The Independent, Baumgartner gained fame in 2012 when he became the first skydiver to break the sound barrier after diving from a balloon about 24 miles above Earth with help from a pressurized suit. Porto Sant'Elpidio Mayor Massimiliano Ciarpella expressed his sadness in a social media statement shortly after Baumgartner's death. "Our community is deeply impacted by the tragic passing of Felix Baumgartner, a worldwide figure, a symbol of courage and passion for extreme flying," he wrote in an English translation, offering condolences to Baumgartner's family and loved ones. Ciarpella initially indicated that Baumgartner had experienced a health issue in the air. “Porto Sant'Elpidio stands with his family and loved ones in this moment of grief," he said at the time. "On behalf of the Municipal Administration and all citizens, I express my sincerest condolences for this irreparable loss.”

Dolly Parton's Sister Says She 'Was Up All Night Praying' After the Country Icon, 79, Postponed Shows Amid Health Issues

Dolly Parton's sister is asking for prayers for the country icon. A week after the Nashville mainstay postponed her Las Vegas residency due to unspecified health struggles, her sister shared an update on Facebook. "Last night, I was up all night praying for my sister, Dolly. Many of you know she hasn’t been feeling her best lately. I truly believe in the power of prayer, and I have been lead to ask all of the world that loves her to be prayer warriors and pray with me," the music legend's sister, Freida Parton, wrote in a post on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Freida ended her post with a heart emoji, adding, "She’s strong, she’s loved, and with all the prayers being lifted for her, I know in my heart she’s going to be just fine. Godspeed, my sissy Dolly. We all love you!" On Sunday, Sept. 28, Dolly, 79, revealed that she would be postponing her Las Vegas residency dates by nearly a year to focus on her health. “As many of you know, I’ve been dealing with some health challenges, and my doctors tell me that I must have a few procedures. As I joked with them, it must be time for my 100,000 check-up, although it’s not the usual trip to see my plastic surgeon!” Dolly wrote in the announcement. “In all seriousness, given this, I am not going to be able to rehearse and put together the show that I want you to see, and the show that you deserve to see. You see good money to see me perform, and I want to be at my best for you." The entertainer ended the note, writing, "And don’t worry about me quittin’ the business because God hasn’t said anything about stopping yet. But, I believe He is telling me to slow down right now so I can be ready for more big adventures with all of you.” Dolly was scheduled to perform in Las Vegas for a limited engagement at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace beginning in December. It would have been the first time that she performed an extended run in the city in more than 30 years; the residency is now slated to launch in September 2026. The Grammy winner's medical ordeal follows a difficult year for the beloved country star, who in March announced that Carl Dean, her husband of 58 years, had died at the age of 82.
