Jennifer Lopez Hugs Mom Guadalupe Rodríguez at “Kiss of the Spider Woman” Premiere in New York City

Jennifer Lopez had a very special supporter by her side at the premiere of her newest film. The actress, dancer and singer shared a sweet moment with her mom Guadalupe Rodríguez as Kiss of the Spider Woman debuted in New York City on Monday, Oct. 6. While Rodríguez didn't walk the red carpet alongside her daughter at The Shed venue, Lopez, 56, was snapped giving her mom a hug behind the scenes. It was a total family affair for Lopez, who was also joined by her 17-year-old twins, Max and Emme, for photos on the red carpet. Not only has Rodríguez, 79, given her daughter moral support — she also prepared the Selena star for a career in show business, from an early age. "My mom was also the mom who got me into musicals and introduced me to all kinds of music. I am an entertainer because of my mom," Lopez said in a February 2022 Rolling Stone cover story, adding that she is "able to survive the things I've survived in this business because my mom was tough." "I don't think she could realize what she was preparing me for, but she did," Lopez added. Back in December 2024, Lopez dedicated a sweet birthday tribute to her mom on Instagram, sharing a carousel of photos including a close-up selfie, a candid shot of Rodríguez in hair rollers and a throwback photo of the mother-daughter duo all dressed up. "Happy birthday mommy!! I love you so very much!! Thank you for being there for me always …🤍🤍 #TheLupinator," Lopez wrote in the caption of Rodríguez, who shares the star with David Lopez. (The pair split in 1999 after 33 years of marriage.) Written and directed by Bill Condon, Kiss of the Spider Woman is an adaptation of the 1993 Broadway musical by John Kander, Fred Ebb and Terrence McNally, which in turn was based on the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig. The story was previously adapted for a 1985 film starring William Hurt, Raul Julia and Sônia Braga, while the new movie stars Lopez, Tonatiuh and Diego Luna. Lopez is part of an extensive executive-producing team that also includes ex Ben Affleck and Matt Damon under their Artists Equity banner. During Monday's premiere, Lopez and Affleck, 53, turned heads as they posed together on the red carpet. Ahead of the screening, Lopez introduced the film and thanked her ex-husband, saying, “Thank you so much, thank you everybody for being here tonight. Thank you, Ben, this movie wouldn’t have been made without Ben and without Artists Equity.” Executive producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas stressed to PEOPLE at the premiere that Lopez is playing "three roles" in Kiss of the Spider Woman: "Ingrid Luna, the actress; Aurora, the role the actress plays; and Spider Woman." According to Goldsmith-Thomas, Lopez "went to a speech teacher to learn that mid-Atlantic" accent for her character, as filmmaker Condon, 69, " wanted to do this very much in the style of the movies of the '50s," including filming everything "in one shot." "That meant that all of those dance numbers she did — from top to bottom, there was no cutting, there was no coverage," she adds of Lopez. "It was extraordinary, and when [Bill] pitched her his vision, it was honestly exactly what you ended up seeing. He was that sure of what he was doing." Kiss of the Spider Woman is in theaters Friday, Oct. 10.

EU to match U.S. steel tariffs, raising angst among U.K. companies

Oct. 7 (UPI) -- The European Union has announced it will match President Donald Trump's tariffs on steel, causing the United Kingdom's steel industry to quake. The new tariffs would cause a crisis in the U.K. steel industry, as 80% of British exports are to the EU, according to a lobbying group representing the sector. Unions said the tariffs could kill the industry, The Guardian reported. The European Commission's plan would sharply cut the amount of steel that can be imported to the EU without tariffs to 18.3 million tons a year, an almost 50% drop, and would almost double the tariff rate to 50%. The EU's goal is to cut down on global overcapacity, which brings cheap steel from China and hurts steel jobs in Europe, the New York Times reported. It is also a reaction to Trump's tariffs on EU steel, which could increase the likelihood that global producers will send their steel to Europe, flooding the market. "Global overcapacity is damaging our industry," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement. "We have global overcapacity, unfair competition, state aid, and undercutting in prices, and we are reacting to that," Stéphane Séjourné, the European Commission's executive vice president for prosperity and industrial strategy, said at a news conference at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. "Eighteen thousand jobs were lost in the steel sector in 2024. That's too many, and we had to put a stop to that. "The European steel industry was on the verge of collapse -- we are protecting it so that it can invest, decarbonize, and become competitive again," Séjourné said. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer told reporters during a flight to India that officials were in discussions with the EU about the tariffs, according to The Guardian. "In relation to the question of tariffs or other measures, as you'd expect, we are in discussions with the EU about this, as we're in discussions with the U.S. about it," Starmer said. "So I'll be able to tell you more in due course, but we are in discussions as you'd expect." The U.K. government took control of Chinese-owned plants in Scunthorpe, England, earlier this year, while Liberty Steel plants in Rotherham and Stocksbridge, England, fell into government control last month. U.K. industry minister Chris McDonald said it was "vital" to "protect trade flows between the U.K. and EU" and that he would meet with industry leaders on Thursday. He said he was "pushing the European Commission for urgent clarification of the impact of this move on the U.K." Charlotte Brumpton-Childs, U.K. national officer with the GMB trade union, called the tariffs a "hammer blow" that "could end steelmaking in the U.K. if safeguards aren't secured," according to The Guardian.

East Coast could be impacted by a tropical wind and rainstorm later this week

From AccuWeather Public Relations Gusty winds, downpours and beach erosion are expected to impact coastal areas from the Southeast to the mid-Atlantic and Northeast starting later this week > Tropical Storm Jerry has formed in the central Atlantic. It is forecast to track west-northwest toward the Lesser Antilles before curving to the north and moving out to sea AccuWeather® Global Weather Center – Oct. 7, 2025 – As Tropical Storm Jerry develops in the central Atlantic, AccuWeather® hurricane experts say people and businesses along the East Coast should prepare for wind, rain and beach erosion from a tropical wind and rainstorm that is expected to develop later this week off the Southeast coast. AccuWeather uses the term “tropical rainstorm” to describe certain tropical systems that may bring significant impacts from rain or wind before they are officially classified as a tropical depression or storm in order to raise public awareness of their disruptive, damaging and dangerous potential.   “A tropical wind and rainstorm could soak parts of the East Coast later this week and into the weekend. Some coastal areas could see several inches of rain, gusty winds, beach erosion, and prolonged coastal flooding, regardless of tropical development,” AccuWeather® Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva explained. “A very stormy weekend could be on tap for parts of the Southeast, mid-Atlantic and Northeast if this storm hugs the coast or stalls. There will be a window of opportunity where it could strengthen into a named tropical storm.” AccuWeather® hurricane experts say rough surf, dangerous rip currents, prolonged coastal flooding, and beach erosion could impact beaches along the East Coast starting Friday. “The Outer Banks and coastal Carolinas have faced several rounds of rough surf and beach erosion this year from storms off the coast. Tropical Storm Chantal also made landfall in South Carolina in July, causing beach erosion and flooding issues across the Carolinas,” DaSilva said. “This storm will likely bring more rough surf and beach erosion to areas that have already been hit hard this year. We could see more vulnerable beach homes collapse into the ocean.” AccuWeather® was the first known source to issue a forecast track for Tropical Storm Jerry early Tuesday morning. “Tropical Storm Jerry is expected to strengthen into the fifth hurricane of the season in the Atlantic,” DaSilva said. “AccuWeather forecasts this storm to pass north of the Leeward Islands, bringing some wind and rain to the Lesser Antilles starting late Thursday. At this time, a dip in the jet stream and steering winds are expected to help guide this storm to the north and curve it out to sea.” AccuWeather® hurricane experts say there is a low risk of tropical development potential in the Bay of Campeche this week. People in eastern Mexico should monitor this area closely. The next names on the list of Atlantic storms are Karen and Lorenzo. Last month, AccuWeather® hurricane experts lowered the maximum number of named storms and hurricanes forecast to develop this year due to the unusual midseason lull. The AccuWeather® 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast predicts 13-16 named storms and six to nine hurricanes. It is important to note that the forecast for three to six direct impacts on the U.S. has not changed, despite a slight lowering of the total number of storms and hurricanes.

Marjorie Taylor Greene airs support for ACA tax credit extention

Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Rep. Marjorie Taylor, R-Ga., wants to negotiate with congressional Democrats to extend health insurance tax credits for working Americans and their families. The conservative Georgia Republican aired her strong opposition to the Affordable Care Act but said not extending tax credits that expired with the 2025 fiscal year budget on Sept. 30 would double health insurance premiums for those enrolled in ACA plans, The Guardian reported. "The ACA made health insurance unaffordable for my family after it was passed, with skyrocketing premiums higher than our house payment," Greene said Monday evening in a post on X. She said she is "not a fan" of the ACA, but its political reality makes it necessary to extend the expired tax credits. "I'm going to go against everyone on this issue because when the tax credits expire, this year my own adult children's insurance premiums are going to double, along with all the wonderful families and hard-working people in my district," Greene said. Instead of "towing the party line or playing loyalty games," Greene said is "disgusted" that health insurance premiums would double for policies obtained through health insurance exchanges that were established via the ACA. "I'm a Republican who won't vote for illegals to have any taxpayer-funded healthcare or benefits," Greene added. "I'm America only!!!" She criticized the Biden administration for allocating what she said was $30 billion to Israel in 2024 and hundreds of billions to Ukraine since 2022. She also criticized congressional leaders for not addressing the expiring ACA tax credits. "All our country does is fund foreign countries and foreign wars," Green said, "and never does anything to help the American people!!!" She said Americans "don't hate your government enough" and urged others to work with her to "do something about the absolutely insane cost" of health insurance for U.S. citizens and legal residents. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., dismissed Greene's comments by saying she was not in the respective House committees where the expiring ACA tax credits and other healthcare issues were discussed. "Congresswoman Greene does not serve on the committees of jurisdiction to deal with those specialized issues," Johnson told media on Tuesday. "She's probably not read that in on some of that because it's still been sort of in [the] silos of the people who specialize in those issues," he explained. Johnson said House Republicans intend to take up the matter when the House resumes session on Oct. 14.
