Fifty million Americans under severe weather watch as tornadoes and hailstorms threaten to unleash havoc
Millions of Americans must brace for a weekend of severe weather as powerful storms pound the southeastern United States. Warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico surged into Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, the Mississippi Valley and the Ozarks Saturday morning, creating the perfect mix for brutal weather. The brewing storm is wrought with atmospheric instability and chaotic winds that will cause large hail, wind damage, flooding and tornadoes into Saturday evening, according to Fox Weather. NOAA's Storm Prediction Center placed more than 13 million people across 10 states into a level two out of five severe weather threat. Much of Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Missouri could be slammed with hail, thunderstorms, and flash flooding. Over 40 million Americans in the Gulf Coast, the Southern planes, and parts of the Ohio Valley were placed under a level one severe weather threat. A large cold front moving across the middle of the country caused weather to become more unstable throughout the day, affecting Saturday night plans and college football games. Games in Texas and Indiana were already delayed due to lighting, according to CBS. Parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri were put under severe thunderstorm warnings Saturday morning. Eventually, scattered storms will amalgamate into a larger storm Saturday evening, which could lead to wind damage and brief tornado spins. 'October, we see tornadoes popping up, but not as common, so you know it's just a good reminder to always be aware and keep your wits about you, even as we move into those cooler weather days,' said Fox Weather meteorologist Bayne Froney. Residents in parts of Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan should also brace for flash floods. Experts said the threat will linger overnight in the Gulf Coast As the cold front continues to push east, many Americans will continue to be afflicted by severe wind. West Virginia, Pennsylvania, the Carolinas, and Ohio must brace for storms and high winds up to 80mph throughout Sunday. Surrounding states will be hit with brutal wind gusts reaching 70mph. Meteorologists explained that this is a cross-country storm, and has been making its way through the United States from the west coast. 'Everyone is going to get a little taste of it one way or another,' said Froney. The storm system is slated to move east Sunday and into Monday, leading to more widespread storms.

Bihar Assembly sat for average 29 days each year: ADR report
An analysis by the poll watchdog Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) shows that over the past five years, the Bihar Assembly sat for an average of 29 days per year. The longest sessions were the second and fifth sessions, each having 22 sittings. The analysis also showed 251 MLAs asked a total of 22,505 questions. BJP MLA Arun Shankar Prasad asked the highest number of 275 questions, followed by Manohar Prasad Singh of the Congress, who posed 231 questions. The report was made from data collated through an RTI application filed by the ADR and Bihar Election Watch asking for the information on the performance of the MLAs and the Legislative Assembly as well as information available on the website of Bihar Legislative Assembly. There are 243 seats in Bihar Assembly. The report also includes the analysis for the MLAs who have resigned or got elected through bye-elections. It says that the 17th Bihar Assembly held 15 sessions between November 2020 and July 2025, with a total of 146 sittings during this period. Over these five years, it sat for an average of 29 days per year. The longest sessions were the 2nd and 5th sessions, each having 22 sittings. A total of 22505 questions were asked by 251 MLA. The highest number of questions were related to Rural Works, Education and Health. As far as legislation is concerned, out of 99 Bills introduced in the 17th Bihar Assembly, all 99 (100%) Bills were passed. All these Bills were passed on the same day as of their introduction. The report also found that 17 MLAs crossed over to other parties after being elected in 2020 Assembly elections in Bihar with BJP being the main beneficiary. While the BJP admitted seven MLAs who got elected from three different parties in the past five years, RJD and JD(U) also inducted five MLAs each from other parties.

Vanderbilt is the place to be these days with the Commodores having one of their best seasons ever, and no celebrity has become as known for following the team — and trying to date the quarterback's mom — as comedian Theo Von. A Serious Bus Accident Claims the Life of at Least 16 Passengers in Brazil
According to the preliminary investigation, the driver lost control of the vehicle, veered into the opposite lane, collided with rocks on the side of the road, and eventually hit a sandbank and overturned. Of the 16 deceased, eleven were women and four were men. The gender of the other deceased has not yet been disclosed. At least 17 other people were injured and taken to hospitals in the region. The driver suffered minor injuries and underwent a breathalyzer test, the result of which was negative. He was then taken to the police station, where he stated that a faulty brake on the bus caused the accident. According to Brazilian authorities, the bus was carrying about 30 passengers bound for the municipality of Brumado, in the state of Bahia, also in the impoverished northeast region of the country. The Civil Police have opened an investigation to clarify the causes of the accident. Pernambuco Governor Raquel Lyra, on an official visit to China, said on social media that she is monitoring the situation “even from a distance.” “Teams are working to help those in need,” he said. For his part, the governor of Bahia, Jerônimo Rodrigues, lamented the “very serious accident” and expressed his solidarity with the families of the victims, among whom are people born in that state. “I am attentive to the needs of the injured and their families, and I offer my government the opportunity to collaborate with the Pernambuco authorities in any way necessary. We are closely monitoring the situation and are ready to offer support,” he stated on social media. Rodrigues later reported that he had mobilized his Ministry of Health, the Fire Department, and the Technical Police to provide assistance and identify the victims.

Prashant Kishor: From backroom to ballot
Prashant Kishor, 48, political strategist-turned-leader of the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP), is a public figure about whom much is known and seen, yet with every new assignment or stage in his career, something more is revealed. As an unknown wag once said, “why pay money to have your family tree traced; go into politics and your opponents will do it for you.” Mr. Kishor is now in politics, neck deep. For starters, political observers came to know of Mr. Kishor as one of the figures behind the Citizens for Accountability and Governance (C&AG), an organisation actively involved in the political campaign of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2014, the election that saw the emergence of Narendra Modi, then Gujarat Chief Minister, on the national stage. At that time, the concept of a political strategist working parallel to the party cadre with a close working relationship with the political principal was new. Mr. Kishor was described as a former employee at a UN body abroad connected to public health policy, with an interest in politics that fuelled his move back to India. Novel campaign outreaches such as the ‘chai pe charcha’ (chats over tea) were credited to Mr. Kishor and his team. As the BJP settled into governance after the 2014 victory, and Mr. Kishor found himself at odds with a party organisation that did not seem to have any space for him and his ideas, he exited the BJP’s system, and became close to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who proudly declared his association with Mr. Kishor as the return of the prodigal son. Mr. Kishor, who hails from Bihar, worked with the Mahagathbandhan (an alliance of the Janata Dal (United), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress, which beat the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2015 Assembly polls. A child of a physician and a homemaker, Prashant Kishor, hailing from Bihar’s Rohtas, did his early education in Buxar, and later in Hyderabad. After studies, he moved abroad to work with the UN, before returning to India as a political consultant. He founded, along with a few old colleagues, the Indian Political Action Committee (IPAC), a political strategy firm, which brought in a monumental shift in the way Indians saw their political parties organise and fight elections. The Mahagathbandhan’s victory in the Bihar elections saw not only the rise of the industry of political strategy firms, but also revealed, for the first time, a glimmer of front office political ambition in Mr. Kishor. He was appointed vice-president of the Janata Dal (U), while at the same time being a strategist for political clients. He handled the Congress in Uttar Pradesh in 2017 (not a victorious outcome), and went on to engage the YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh in 2019, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2020 and the Trinamool Congress and the DMK in 2021. Things between Mr. Kishor and Nitish Kumar, however, did not continue to be rosy, with the final fall-out happening in 2020, when Mr. Kishor openly criticised the Chief Minister on his support for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which was being pushed by the Modi government at the Centre. Harsh words were exchanged and indiscipline and intrigues were alleged, but some aspects of Mr. Kishor’s ideological bent amid the heterodoxy of his client list was revealed in that exchange. Out of the backroom It was after the 2021 polls in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, where Mr. Kishor aided the Trinamool and the DMK to victory, that he made the decision to make the leap from backroom political strategy to forming his own party. In an interview to The Hindu recently, he explained his thinking at that time. “The trigger point was the COVID pandemic. At that time, I was involved in elections in [West] Bengal and Tamil Nadu, and I felt helpless that despite all the network, power, resources that I had, I felt that I could not be of any help to anybody. It also made me realise that a lot of the talk of good governance in Bihar is hollow. That almost 5 million people got into trouble, had to walk back to Bihar. That’s the time I thought I should go back to Bihar. And the proof of this is that the day the Trinamool won Bengal, May 2, 2021, I announced that I’m quitting what I was doing,” he said. His modus operandi thereafter was one of exploring the political field. He undertook a two-year tour across Bihar, and reached out to the Congress. His first idea, he said, was to work with the Congress, to devise a plan for six States of North India where the Congress was diminishing, and revive the pre-independence role of the Congress as an outlet for anyone who wants to contribute to public affairs. “Just as during the freedom movement, anyone, from those who wanted to agitate on the streets to those boycotting foreign goods and spinning the charkha, said they were part of the Congress, the party should mean that in governance terms,” Mr. Kishor said. “We, however, failed to take the leap of faith,” he added. The Congress leadership pored over a presentation made by him and later decided not to participate. This brings us to October 2024, when, with lakhs of sign-ups, the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) was launched in Patna. Leaders said they would contest the 2025 Assembly polls in Bihar. It revealed a journey of political alternatives. But detractors reminded the newly-founded party that the leader’s full name is Prashant Kishor Pandey, alluding that his identity (that of a Brahmin) would be a detriment within the social justice politics of the State. ‘Development politics’ Mr. Kishor’s navigation of Indian politics has revealed both his ascribed and acquired identities and his views. As a vocal face of the JSP, he has been at the forefront of articulating the party’s ideology and plans for what he termed “development politics”. What is still unknown, however, are two things — whether his party, now in the electoral fray, will be a disruptor of the two decades of Bihar’s bipolar political equations and whether his refusal to fight the polls as a candidate has wrecked or aided that project. Mr. Kishor is upbeat about the chances of his party, and dismissive of the criticism that the JSP “is a spoiler party”. “When people say, vote katwa (spoiler) party, they think that they are using it as an abuse to us, I say, yes, we are, but we are cutting so many votes of both sides (NDA and INDIA bloc) that they will be finished, he told The Hindu. For someone who has disrupted the backroom of political campaigning in India, entering the electoral fray without a political legacy to bank upon, Prashant Kishor continues to be a fascinating chapter of India’s democracy.

VCK urges Tamil Nadu government to pass law against caste and honour-linked hate crimes in January
In the wake of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announcing a commission, headed by retired High Court Judge K.N. Basha, to recommend the State government on the proposed bill against caste and honour-linked hate crimes in State Assembly on Friday, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi Villupuram MP D. Ravikumar and VCK Assembly floor leader and general secretary Sinthanai Selvan, on Saturday said that the DMK government must pass the law against caste and honour-linked hate crimes in the next Assembly session before the State elections due next year. Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Ravikumar said that he welcomed the commission to give its recommendations to the State government regarding the bill, but added that the commission has no mandate as on today to submit a report within a specified timeframe. “I welcome the announcement of the commission...such a commission may be necessary to convince various sections of the society and the stakeholders. However, the Commission should be mandated to prepare a bill within three months and the law should be passed in January next year,” he said. Mr. Ravikumar said that a commission doesn’t need to discuss and deliberate the basics - the merits and demerits of passing the said law. “The National Law Commission has already given a draft law in 2012 and the Supreme Court has given detailed guidelines in the Shakthi Vahini vs Union Government case. The VCK also has given a bill to the State government. I hope that the K.N. Basha Commission is asked to prepare a bill in three months. A commission may be necessary to convince all stakeholders...so I welcome the commission.” He further recalled several commissions formed in the past, which weren’t fruitful. “We demanded a law to implement reservations in promotions...which even the neighbouring States, including the BJP-ruled states, have already passed. But, only a Commission was formed. Similarly, a Commission was formed during Kalaignar’s last tenure to look into the issue of Panchami lands. The Madras High Court in 2015 asked the State government to form a panel to look into Panchami lands. The AIADMK government had identified around 2.5 lakh acres. Not even 200 acres have been handed over yet,” he said. VCK Assembly floor leader Sinthanai Selvan said that he welcomed Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s decision to form a commission after stating in the Assembly that a separate law was not necessary to tackle this specific hate crime. “It is welcome that he has changed his stance after listening to several progressive voices. He may have thought that a commission was necessary to convince all stakeholders. The VCK has been instrumental in ensuring that the issue remains alive after the Chief Minister’s comments earlier. I am very hopeful that the law will be passed in January,” he said. Human rights activists and political observers, who have been advocating for such a law, expressed the hope that the State government will not use the Commission as a ploy to further delay the issue until the elections while adding that the DMK alliance could face a pushback from the Scheduled Caste communities if the law was not passed before the elections.

Minister Desmond Mckenzie To Receive OJ For Four Decades Of Distinguished Public Service
In recognition of more than four decades of unwavering service to the people of Jamaica, Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, will be conferred with the Order of Jamaica (OJ). Mr. McKenzie, who is Member of Parliament (MP) for Kingston Western, will be formally invested with the honour during the National Investiture Ceremony at King’s House on National Heroes Day, Monday, October 20. The Minister, whose distinguished career in public service commenced in 1977 as a Councillor, expresses profound gratitude upon being selected for the Order of Jamaica, describing it as a deeply meaningful honour bestowed by the Government of Jamaica. He credits the honour to the people of Kingston Western, his family, and late former Prime Minister and MP for the constituency, the Most Hon. Edward Seaga. “I believe the way was paved for me because of Mr. Seaga’s coming to West Kingston. To receive an honour of this nature speaks volumes to the work, the contributions that I have made. I believe that such an honour comes with a lot, and I am prepared to actually even work harder, because the Order of Jamaica is something that I never dreamt of,” Mr. McKenzie states. Reflecting on his illustrious career, the Minister affirms that his greatest pride lies in the work he has undertaken to uplift and positively impact the lives of the less fortunate across Jamaica. This includes the implementation of feeding programmes for the homeless during his tenure as Mayor of Kingston, and the subsequent establishment of drop-in centres and night shelters for vulnerable groups through the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development. The most recent addition to this national network of facilities supporting individuals experiencing homelessness is the Desmond McKenzie Transitional Centre, located in downtown Kingston. The facility serves as a transitional bridge, supporting vulnerable individuals in their reintegration into formal society by facilitating access to employment opportunities and safe, stable accommodation. “I really went out on a limb to provide a safe haven for the homeless [and] destitute of the country. I believe if you ask me what I get pleasure more in doing… it’s the new infirmaries, the repairs that I’ve undertaken, the shelters, the many programmes that have been implemented by the Government that have met the needs of those who are less fortunate,” Mr. McKenzie tells JIS News. He underscores his pride in the work of the Social Development Commission (SDC), particularly its role in strengthening communities nationwide. The Minister further highlights the entrepreneurial grants programme as a transformative initiative that has empowered small business owners and everyday Jamaicans to establish viable enterprises, noting that “they are living testimony to the success of that programme right across Jamaica.” Mr. McKenzie also expresses pride in the strides he and his team have made to modernise and enhance the Indigent Housing Programme. “We have expanded the programme in such a way now, that we have built studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom units. We have equipped them with water harvesting and we have put in electricity. “But the part that makes me happy is the furnishing of the homes, because you can give somebody a home, but they don’t have what to sleep on… they don’t have what to cook on. So we have put in the requisite furnishing in these houses… and I have seen families who breakdown and cry over our Indigent Housing Programme. It is something that I would say has made a tremendous difference,” he outlines. Mr. McKenzie believes that since assuming the role of Minister in 2016, he has worked diligently to elevate the stature and respectability of local government. “Persons have started to look at local government differently from how they used to view it; and I think that is important, because local government is a critical component of the daily activities of many Jamaicans. We are responsible for 80 per cent of what takes place in the country. My contribution in the field of local government is something that I’m proud of,” the Minister states. Meanwhile, Mr. McKenzie tells JIS News that his achievements have been made possible through the unwavering support of his family, whose encouragement has sustained him throughout his public service journey. He also acknowledges the critical role of the Government in enabling his success, noting “they have given me the platform and they have provided resources to execute the programmes.” On the matter of staying grounded and motivated in public life, Minister McKenzie affirms that his inspiration stems from the trust placed in him by the Jamaican people. “If you ask me, ‘what are the things that motivate me?’ When I get up in the mornings and I am confronted with an issue, let us say we look at the state of garbage in Jamaica… and I ask, ‘what contribution have I made?’ I can say that it was under my stewardship that we have brought in more garbage trucks in this country in less than 10 years than what the country had provided in the last 30 years. That is something that makes me comfortable,” he maintains. Meanwhile, Mr. McKenzie says his current focus is on preparing the next generation of leaders to advance Jamaica’s development. For those considering a career in representational politics, he tells them not to get involved if they are not fully committed to serving people. He advises that persons contemplating a career in representational politics should only pursue it if they are fully committed to serving the people. “What this job takes is not just the love for it. You can love something, but you are not committed to it. I believe one of my greatest assets is the effort that I put into what I do,” Mr. McKenzie states. His unwavering zeal and dedication to public service have earned widespread recognition. Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) which falls under the Minister’s portfolio, Audley Gordon, commends Mr. McKenzie’s exemplary work ethic and unwavering dedication, describing them as unparalleled in the sphere of public service. “I am yet to see anyone with the servant’s heart of a Desmond McKenzie. He is immersed into service and he is at work earlier than most. He is not doing this as a one-off show, it’s everyday… and that is remarkable in itself,” he tells JIS News. The Executive Director emphasises that Mr. McKenzie fully immerses himself in every task he undertakes. “He’s not one who just dictates or gives directives and then ensures that you carry them through. He also immerses himself into the hard grind of the effort, to make sure it is done,” Mr. Gordon points out. Mr. McKenzie’s son, Matthew, also affirms his father’s unwavering dedication and unmatched work ethic. “He is very dedicated to what he does… and he gives his all. Daddy is a very hard worker… late nights, early mornings. No matter what time he gets in or what time he goes to bed, he is always the first one up. “That is something that we saw growing up. That is just a testament to who he is…very dedicated [and] very committed. It was very instructive for me, seeing his dedication; that is one of the qualities that I have taken from him,” Matthew McKenzie tells JIS News. He describes the national honour as a powerful testament to the sacrifices Minister McKenzie has made in service to Jamaica, adding “we deeply appreciate it.”
