McLaren's Sprint Race In Austin Went Worse Than You Can Even Imagine

Formula 1 Sprint Races are only worth a maximum of eight championship points, but, boy, can they have some massive championship implications. McLaren learned this the hard way early Saturday afternoon at Circuit of the Americas, and it didn't take more than one turn. As it stands, the championship battle is a three-horse race between current leader Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris of McLaren, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who, while still a long shot, is the highest scorer since the summer break. The Dutchman qualified on pole for the Sprint just ahead of Norris and Piastri in P2 and P3, respectively. READ: FORMULA 1 MOVES TO APPLE TV IN 2026, MARKING BOLD SHIFT AWAY FROM TRADITIONAL TV But before they could get on with the 19-lap race, they had to get through COTA's notorious opening corner: an uphill, mile-wide hairpin that seems to be a magnet for broken bits of carbon fiber. The lights went out, and Piastri had a phenomenal jump. It looked like he outdragged Norris to the breaking zone, but Norris got a better entry into the corner. No problem for Piastri, though. He could just pull the ol' switcheroo on Norris with a tighter line through the exit, and second place was as good as his. The only problem was that he didn't account for the presence of Niko Hulkenberg's Sauber to his inside. Are you kidding me? Both McLarens retired, as did Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, while several other cars sustained serious damage. It's hard to chalk that up to anything but a racing incident, but it all started with Piastri trying to make a move that just wasn't there. That's another mistake for Piastri over the last few race weekends after a horror show in Baku and another first-lap incident with Norris following a controversial dust-up in Singapore. The latter led to "repercussions" that the team has been weirdly keeping to themselves. I can't imagine that causing a chain reaction like that would be part of those. This moment is massive for the championship because Verstappen managed to hold on to the lead and won the Sprint. That gives him 8 points, and if he wins the race tomorrow, he'll leave Austin with at least a 15-point swing in his favor. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say that McLaren is cracking under the pressure of a potential Drivers' Championship after locking up the Constructors' title in Singapore… but I'm not really sure how to end that sentence because the mistakes and misfortune really are piling up.

Incessant Whining About AP Poll Proves You Can't Please Everyone

It really is true what they say: you can't please everyone. When we started this whole crazy college football experiment, national champions were decided entirely by the media. Barbaric, I know. So then, we decided to have computers select the two best teams to play each other, and we called it the BCS. But people weren't happy with that, so we introduced a four-team playoff. Of course, once people got disenfranchised with that concept, it was agreed that we needed to expand. Four teams became 12, and that kept the unwashed masses happy for a while. Now, there's talk of even more expansion, but the big point of contention these days is the AP Poll and SEC bias. Oh, cry me a river! Newsflash, the AP Poll has always been biased. The voters always used to vote for teams like Notre Dame and Ohio State because, more often than not, those were the most popular teams at the time. This incessant whining about the polls and SEC bias is just more proof you can't please everyone, nor should you want to. We had a system that worked for our fans, but the casuals came in and perverted something that was so pure. "But college football isn't fair." It never has been. I would argue this is as fair and balanced as it's ever been, with parity at an all-time high. But even that isn't good enough for these psychopaths. You should never negotiate with terrorists, but that's exactly what is happening with these ever-expanding playoffs. Four teams weren't enough, and 12 isn't either, so where is the line? It's gotten so bad that they've even brainwashed some of our coaches, including Georgia's Kirby Smart. College football doesn't need to expand to appease the outsiders. As I always say: reject modernity, embrace tradition. The AP Poll isn't going anywhere, so get used to it. Don't compromise your morals and principles just to please the masses, otherwise you risk alienating the fans that rode with you the whole way.

Polack Post: Caribbean Prosecutions – Justice For All ?

Peter Polack By Peter Polack It was recently reported in the Cayman Islands that a former convicted lawyer and football official was employed under the Deputy Governor Second Chances program with the fire service. This is an exemplary program that deserves wider use and funding. The reward for the West Bay mass shooting in the Premier’s constituency remains unclaimed. There are some murmurs and noises of dissatisfaction, likely from those who prefer charged persons to opt for suicide from one of the few tall trees in the Cayman Islands. Those theorists are fixated on detection, apprehension, prosecution, imprisonment and recidivist rates, not rehabilitation or prevention. The Second Chance program has little recidivism failure but it is not a one size fits all for the nearly twenty lucky candidates. It deserves a vastly increased budget and middle ground. It should have Caribbean wide application, not Caribbean wide official assassinations. In a local case some years ago a young man bravely faced down nearly five years of unjust investigation and prosecution before the then Director of Public Prosecutions stayed the prosecution. Another young man at the same time faced a similar prosecution on almost the same facts before he was convicted, then entered prison for an irreversibly changed life. Too little too late. Another young man in similar circumstances,now in politics, has represented the country as a minister. A model of rehabilitation and proof of a second chance. The circle of sin. I have relatives who have laundered money to help others evade taxes, stole $5,000 from a local bank, sold drugs before joining law enforcement, all without ever seeing the inside of a police station or court. There may be members of the police, prosecution and judiciary who are in the same uncomfortable position. It is not their fault. It is not my fault. Sometimes it is the ones who are not caught who are of the greatest venality. They move among us like paragons of virtue as the skeletons rattle in their closet. Recently, two firearm prosecutions failed before the court when the jury disagreed with the prosecution. No oversight or peer review. Crying for a prosecution inspectorate or early and enhanced judicial review. Court room waste. A growing lack of confidence. There was another announcement that an anti-money laundering regulator had been appointed to oversight lawyers. No mention of average persons, businessmen, real estate agents, accountants, corporate managers, jewelers, aircraft or vessel registration personnel. The list is endless. So long as the government of the day remains fixated on the financial industry, while Rome burns, there can be no hope for the future.
