A new recall affecting thousands of recently manufactured Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles is imminent, according to a report filed to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).The Elon Musk–led EV company is set to recall more than 13,000 cars built between March and August 2025 due to a battery issue that can cause a sudden loss in propulsion while driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that roughly one percent of those vehicles are affected. The 'affordable' Tesla is here. But is it a good deal? The NHTSA report states that the problem stems from a battery pack contactor that "may suddenly open due to poor coil termination connection," cutting power unexpectedly. The NHTSA wrote that Tesla dealers were to be notified of the issue by Oct. 15.According to the NHTSA, Tesla has identified 36 warranty claims and 26 field reports related to the issue, but says it’s not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities tied to the defect. While the agency recommended a recall, Tesla is not legally required to issue one — meaning this recall is entirely voluntary on the company’s part.Frequently, Tesla resolves recalls through over-the-air software updates. This time, however, drivers will need to bring their vehicles to a service center to have the faulty contactors physically replaced. The repairs will be completed free of charge.This marks yet another recall for a Tesla-manufactured vehicle, following a string of issues earlier this year involving the Cybertruck. The so-called "apocalypse-proof" EV has already faced several recalls — including one in which the accelerator pedal could become lodged under interior trim, and another over an exterior panel that risked detaching while driving.The recall also follows mounting scrutiny from U.S. regulators over Tesla’s safety practices. Earlier this month, NHTSA launched a separate investigation into nearly 2.9 million Tesla vehicles equipped with the company’s Full Self-Driving system after receiving dozens of complaints of traffic violations and crashes involving the software.

President Donald Trump this week nominated Texas Sen. Brian Birdwell to serve as an assistant secretary of defense, the White House announced Tuesday. The Granbury Republican currently oversees a Texas legislative committee that hears border and homeland security proposals. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, the move would be a return to the Pentagon for Birdwell, a six-term state senator who suffered severe burns when a plane crashed yards away from his office during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. At the time he worked at the time as Department of the Army staff. His 20-year career in the Army also included operational and training deployments. Birdwell announced in June that he did not intend to seek reelection to the Legislature’s upper chamber.

In case you missed it, Vampire Weekend have their own vinyl club, called Frog On The Bass Drum. Previously, the first volume, Live In Minneapolis, included a ten-minute cover of Bob Dylan’s “Jokerman,” and the second volume, Una Notte A Milano, had a double version of “Bambina.” Now, a third volume is on the way, Weekend At The Garden. The 2LP release was recorded during the band’s two performances at NYC’s Madison Square Garden in October 2024. The first disc contains songs recorded during the Saturday show, while the second is sourced from the Sunday concert. The release is pressed by Third Man Records and will be limited to 3,000 copies. Frog On The Bass Drum subscribers also get a limited-edition pennant flag and a new issue of “The Quarterly Report,” which is written by the band. Check out the art and tracklist below.

The Taoiseach has called for a “civilised debate” on migration issues as he warned those involved in disorder outside asylum seeker accommodation in Dublin that they will be dealt with robustly. Micheál Martin’s comments came as he faced accusations from Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns of not doing enough to counter narratives linking migration and crime rates. The exchanges between the two politicians unfolded during Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil when Ms Cairns expressed concerns that asylum seekers living in the Citywest Hotel, particularly children, had been left “terrorised” by the disorder witnessed outside the building on Tuesday evening. The disturbances flared at a protest that was staged following an alleged sexual assault of a girl in the vicinity of the hotel in the early hours of Monday. Ms Cairns said the rioting was orchestrated online by “far right actors” whom she accused of peddling “racist myths”. “They openly incite violence and celebrate it when it happens,” she said. “While they spread their dangerous and divisive disinformation online, there is an onus on everyone in this chamber to counter that rhetoric. We must use language carefully and factually.” She added: “It is disgusting that an alleged sexual assault on one vulnerable child has resulted in other children being terrorised.” Mr Martin condemned the violence and said innocent people living in the hotel were threatened in terms of their safety and security. He said it “beggars belief” that gardaí were abused and attacked. The Taoiseach said there were people who would not condone the violence at the hotel but would still want to “raise issues”. Mr Martin said politicians needed to be open to those voices. “I just think it’s important that we try and have a civilised debate here,” he said. In response, Ms Cairns said the Taoiseach should do more to counter “false narratives”. “I’m not saying that we can’t discuss the asylum system, of course we absolutely have to, but it shouldn’t be too much to ask that we do that in a fact-based way and that we shut down racist tropes,” she said. “This is something we all have to do at every opportunity, and I hope you will do in the future.” Mr Martin said he took exception to Ms Cairns’ comments. He suggested the Social Democrats leader and her colleagues approached the issues with a “certain degree of arrogance” and he urged her to listen to the opinions of people who did not share her perspective. “And then address those issues on a fact-based, evidence-based approach,” he added.

The Golden State Warriors might have an aging set of players. But the season opener against the LA Lakers showed that they could also be one of the most threatening. Although the Lakers put on a brave show despite LeBron James’ absence, and Luka Doncic stepped up with 43 points, it wasn’t enough to overcome the combined efforts of Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, Jonathan Kuminga, and Draymond Green. Unlike their competitors in the West, the Warriors didn’t sign new talent in the offseason. They remained focused on getting Kuminga back into the fold and signed former champion Al Horford toward the end of the window. It might be too early to judge, but the Warriors outfit looks a bit different from last season. They seem more focused and far more deadly. However, their core of Curry (37), Butler (36), Green (35), Horford (39), and Buddy Hield (33) are old. So a lot will eventually come down to fitness, and the Warriors are aware of that. After all, if they hadn’t lost Curry to an injury in the playoffs last season, they could have been genuine contenders. But, if they can manage to stay fit, NBA analyst Monica McNutt believes, they will be the team to beat in the West. “I was asked about my darkhorse finals picks recently with Carmelo Anthony, and I kind of got the Warriors coming out of the West right now, if they stay healthy,” predicted McNutt. “Now, here’s the thing,” she continued. “The experience is undeniable, the work ethic is undeniable, the urgency in the case of Jimmy Butler is undeniable.” But this doesn’t mean there aren’t any doubts about the Warriors’ outfit. “What does this team look like in April?” McNutt asked. “Because the mileage, it adds up.” The team has indeed struggled without the Big 3 of Curry, Butler, and Green in full fitness and form. But the Warriors will have to prepare for the inevitability of a post-Steph era. The Warriors’ front office has taken some steps toward that, having young stars like De’Anthony Melton, Gary Payton II, Brandin Podziemski, and Moses Moody. But they are still heavily dependent on Curry at the moment and will hope he can stay fit come the playoffs. Players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Doncic have already hit their stride. So the West is only going to get tougher as the season progresses, making the fitness of the aging Golden State core a crucial factor for the team’s success.
