'Misleading Narrative': Ex-LIC Chairman Slams Washington Post For Allegations Over Investment In Adani Group

Siddhartha Mohanty, the former chairman of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), has called Washington Post's allegations against the Corp. with regards to Adani Group, a "misleading narrative" on Saturday. The Washington Post had alleged that LIC's investment decisions, particularly concerning the Adani Group, are influenced by external factors or were guided by a roadmap drafted by Indian officials.Mohanty has not only refuted these claims, but also asked Washington Post to withdraw and remove the "unverified content" across platforms, via a post on social media platform 'X'."Some misleading narrative is created by Washington Post against LIC’s investment in Adani Group under instructions of the Govt. From my experience as ex-Chairman and CEO&MD I affirm that Govt never interferes directly or indirectly in any lnvestment decision of LIC", the post stated. .Earlier, LIC had also dismissed these allegations via a post on 'X'. In its denial, LIC categorically stated that the allegations leveled by the American daily, which had suggested that Indian officials drafted a proposal in May to steer roughly $3.9 billion in investments from the state-owned insurer to Adani Group companies, are "false, baseless, and far from truth."The insurer went on to deny the core of the report, affirming that "No such document or plan as alleged in the article has ever been prepared by LIC, which creates a roadmap for infusing funds by LIC into Adani group of companies."In a move to reaffirm the integrity and autonomy of its internal governance, LIC clarified the rigorous process behind its investment decisions. The company stated that "Investment decisions are taken by LIC independently as per Board approved policies after detailed due diligence."The insurer refuted any external interference, stating unequivocally that the "Department of Financial Services or any other body does not have any role in such decisions." This statement underscores LIC's position that its multi-billion dollar investment portfolio is managed solely through internal expertise and established corporate policy..LIC Slams Washington Post Report As 'False And Baseless,' Denies External Influence On Investments

3 months without a substantive Defence Minister is dangerous and reckless – Ntim Fordjour to Mahama

The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has described the failure of President John Dramani Mahama to appoint a substantive Minister for Defence nearly three months after the death of Dr Edward Omane Boamah as “dangerous and reckless.” He warned that the prolonged vacancy at the Ministry of Defence poses serious risks to Ghana’s territorial integrity and national security at a time when instability and threats are on the rise. Rev Fordjour expressed grave concern over what he termed as “a dangerous gamble” by the government, citing growing insecurity across parts of the country. “At a time when the security of our country is on the path of rapid deterioration – Gbenyiri, Sampa, Bawku, Galamsey etc – with over 23,000 citizens having fled to neighbouring countries as refugees, this dangerous inaction is unacceptable,” he said. According to the Ranking Member, no responsible government would leave such a critical ministry without leadership for an extended period, especially amid rising cross-border tensions and internal security concerns. “No serious country will run 3 months without a substantive Defence Minister. Is there no suitable person in the NDC who can be trusted by President Mahama to fill the worthy shoes of my departed honourable friend Dr Omane Boamah?” he asked. Rev Fordjour therefore called on President Mahama to act with urgency by appointing a substantive Defence Minister. He stressed that the nation’s security institutions require firm political direction to effectively retool the Ghana Armed Forces and safeguard the nation’s sovereignty. “We demand the immediate appointment of a substantive Minister for Defence to lead the spirited collective action to retool the Ghana Armed Forces and sustain the territorial integrity of our beloved country,” he added.

Tamarindo Halloween Fest Boosts Local Economy

The coastal town of Tamarindo will host its fourth Halloween Fest from October 29 to November 1, drawing families, athletes, artists, and local business owners together for a mix of sports, art, food, and entertainment. The event, organized by the Tamarindo Integral Development Association (ADIT), aims to support the local economy during the slower months and build stronger community ties. Under the slogan “Where Costa Rica Says Trick or Treat,” the festival features a lineup of activities for all ages. A highlight includes the parade modeled after Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” where dancers and performers turn the streets into an open-air show with music and theater elements. Participants can join in, adding to the interactive feel. Costume contests stand out as a key attraction. Competitors show off creative outfits at spots like Chiquitas, Sharky’s, and The Alley, with The Alley offering a $1,000 prize for top entries. Separate categories cover children, adults, and pets in the Spooky Dog Contest, which awards cash and pet care products. Sports events add an active twist. The first free recreational race starts at 4:30 p.m. on November 1 from the Pacific Park building, weaving through town with a Halloween theme. Surfers can enter the Costume Paddle Out, run with Witch’s Rock Surf Camp, for chances to win over $1,500 in prizes. Iguana Surf partners for a photo contest of costumed riders on waves. Climbing competitions and family-friendly cookie decorating round out the options. Children get dedicated fun with face painting, story sessions, crafts, and a “Thriller” dance contest backed by Little Lucha. Winners take home up to $500, plus group dinners for runners-up. Food plays a central role, with local chefs preparing Halloween-themed dishes. A coffee tour explores the drink’s history and production, complete with tastings. Groups can pedal a 15-person bike through town, guided by Costa Cruiser baristas, for a hands-on experience. Businesses join in with the Scary Sales program, running through October and into early November. Hotels provide deals like four nights for the price of two, while surf schools and shops cut prices. Mala Vida Tattoo & Piercing offers reduced rates on tattoos by artist Vince Jaramillo from Los Angeles. ADIT President Elizabeth Cole noted the event’s growth stems from community involvement. “It brings people together around creativity and fun, while helping local operations during quieter times,” she said. The festival receives backing from the Santa Cruz Municipality and various partners. Past editions have included beach cleanups and more parties, expanding its appeal. This year, spots like Tabu Beach Club and Sharky’s plan themed nights with music, drinks, and prizes. Visitors can find full details on ADIT’s facebook and instagram pages. The event positions Tamarindo as a prime spot for Halloween in Costa Rica, blending beach life with festive energy.

Does Jaylen Brown Use Hair Spray-On? Celtics Star Sparks Speculation During Game vs Knicks

There’s never a quiet night in the NBA, and Thursday’s clash between the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks was no exception. Boston fell 105-95 at Madison Square Garden, with Jaylen Brown leading the way with 23 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds. Despite his strong performance, the conversation after the game quickly moved away from stats. Fans and media alike focused on a far more unexpected topic, as the former NBA Finals MVP’s hairline became the night’s most talked-about storyline. It started during the third quarter when Brown drove toward the basket against New York’s OG Anunoby. The C star leaned forward to create some space to take a shot, and in that moment, it seemed like his head left a black smudge on Anunoby’s jersey upon brushing. While no one seemed to notice it immediately, it was later noticed by many and led them to speculate that the Cs guard uses some sort of hair product. Now, how true is that? It certainly caught people’s attention, even if there’s no way to confirm whether the rumor is true. The moment quickly went viral, drawing reactions from NBA fans and meme accounts alike. While Jaylen Brown is far from the only player in the league to use grooming products or hair spray before games, the way the situation unfolded made it seem far more dramatic than it really was for the Celtics shooting guard.

Celtics’ Jaylen Brown: NBA not doing enough to protect players from sports betting fallout

Celtics star Jaylen Brown says the NBA needs to do a better job protecting its players from the growing influence of sports betting. Speaking to reporters before Friday’s loss at Madison Square Garden, Brown said the league hasn’t done enough to address the mounting pressure and harassment players face from fans who wager on games. “They’re like, ‘You make X amount of money, you should be able to deal with all the extra negativity, the people approaching you about the parlays,’” Brown told reporters. “It creates a negative discourse around the game and players when people have money involved. It’s leading to situations that we can avoid if more conversations were had right now.” Brown’s comments came a day after Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Heat guard Terry Rozier were arrested as part of a wide-ranging federal probe into illegal sports betting and rigged poker games tied to organized crime. Rozier is accused of tipping off an associate that he’d remove himself from a 2023 Hornets game, allowing “under” prop bets to cash. Billups, meanwhile, is facing wire fraud and money laundering charges related to rigged poker games and is alleged to have provided advance injury information to bettors. Both have denied the allegations. Brown, who serves as a vice president for the NBA Players Association, said he plans to help the union dig deeper into what happened but criticized the league for prioritizing revenue over player safety. “I don’t think once, from my conversations with the union, that the NBA has been like, ‘How can we protect players more with this environment?’” Brown said. “There’s been little to no conversation around that. “It’s all about, a lot of times, ‘How can we increase business and increase revenue?’ I don’t think we’re talking enough about the aftermath or the consequences of that.” In response, NBA spokesperson Mike Bass issued a statement saying player and coach safety “has always been of critical importance.” “League security works with team officials and law enforcement to respond to any type of fan behavior that violates our code of conduct,” Bass said. “We have put safeguards in place, including social media monitoring, to track and mitigate any potential threats or safety risks.” Brown, who played alongside Rozier in Boston from 2016 to 2019, called the allegations “not conducive of his character.” “Obviously, if those guys are innocent, it’s not a great look for them publicly,” Brown said. “So we’ve got to make sure if they are exonerated, their images are cleaned up. Right now, getting all the information and getting to the bottom of it is the most important thing.”
