Actor-politician Vijay is set to meet the families of the victims of the Karur stampede on Monday, a month after the tragic incident, according to a source in his party. The meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday, October 27 at a resort in Mamallapuram, near Chennai. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has reportedly booked 50 rooms at the resort to ensure the actor can meet the bereaved families personally. The initiative aims to provide an opportunity for the families to convey their grievances and receive condolences directly from the party chief. A family member in Karur said, “They have arranged a bus for us,” adding that the media and party members are barred. Karur stampede The Karur stampede occurred on September 27 during a TVK meeting addressed by Vijay, resulting in 41 deaths and leaving over 60 people injured. The tragedy sparked widespread grief and calls for accountability across the state. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the probe into the incident. Families and the public are closely following the investigation, seeking clarity on the causes of the stampede and accountability for the loss of lives.
A bus fire that killed at least 20 people in southern India was intensified by hundreds of smartphones being onboard, local reports say, citing forensics officials. Flames rapidly engulfed the Bangalore-bound bus after it collided with a motorcycle that ruptured its fuel tank and triggered an explosion early on Friday. Eyewitnesses said the approximately 40 passengers had struggled to escape as locals rushed to pull out survivors. Forensic experts have now told local media that the bus had been carrying a shipment of 234 mobile phones, and that the lithium-ion batteries they contained likely exacerbated the fire once they ruptured. "The bus batteries, presence of flammable furnishings in the bus and the cargo consisting of cell phones aggravated the fire leading to the tragic event," CNN News18 quotes Kurnool Superintendent of Police Vikrant Patel as saying. Meanwhile, P Venkataraman, the director-general of the Andhra Pradesh Fire Services Department, said electrical batteries used for the air conditioning system of the bus also exploded and made the fire worse. "We saw bones and ash dropping through the melted sheets," he told local media. The smartphones were worth 4.6m Indian rupees (£39,361; $52,377) and were being sent from Hyderabad to an e-commerce company in Bengaluru, broadcaster NDTV reports. Most smartphones have lithium-ion batteries, which can pose a fire risk when damaged. This is because they can experience thermal runaway - uncontrollable temperature increases - which is hard to stop with conventional firefighting means. It can also spread to other batteries in close proximity. Authorities have opened an investigation into possible negligent driving over the crash. The bus driver fled the scene. The motorcyclist is said to be among the dead. Buses are a common mode of transport in India, but operators frequently ignore safety rules and overcrowd vehicles, while the nation had the highest road accident death tolls in the world last year.
Over-by-over report: Daryl Mitchell hit 78 not out to steer the hosts home after England made 223 in total despite Harry Brook’s 135. Join Taha Hashim
New Zealand overcame a blitz from centurion Harry Brook to beat England by four wickets on Sunday in the opening game of their three-match one-day international series, with Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell scoring half-centuries. The hosts wobbled during their chase of a modest 224, losing four wickets, including former captain Kane Williamson for a duck in his first game since March, but Mitchell took them home with an unbeaten 78 after being dropped on 33. Bracewell also earned a reprieve early on and ran himself out for 51 to open the door for England after the initial burst from Brydon Carse (3-45), but New Zealand got back on track thanks to Mitch Santner's 27 and prevailed in 36.4 overs. England recovered from a disastrous start as captain Brook bludgeoned 135 from 101 balls and Jamie Overton made 46 to help their side finish on 223 all out in 35.2 overs for a fighting chance in the contest. Asked to bat first at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, England were rocked early by New Zealand's seamers as Zak Foulkes (4-41) and Matt Henry (2-53) reduced the tourists to 56-6 within 12 devastating overs in helpful conditions. Brook went on the attack despite the carnage around him and brought up his fifty in 36 balls with a top-edged six off Nathan Smith, before Overton took his team's total to three figures with another big hit off Jacob Duffy (3-55). Overton shrugged off being hit on the helmet by Smith and closed in on his own half-century, but departed four runs short after a fine catch on the second attempt by Mitchell that ended the 87-run seventh-wicket partnership. Duffy removed Carse in the very next ball to leave England teetering again on 143-8, but Brook took control following Adil Rashid's fall shortly afterwards, reaching his ton with three consecutive sixes and taking his side past 200 runs. A belligerent Brook continued to deal in big shots, swelling his tally of sixes to 11, but was snared trying to sweep Santner out of the park as New Zealand stopped the bleeding to stay on top in the clash.
Former US Vice-President Kamala Harris has expressed concern that she didn't ask Joe Biden to pull out of the race for the White House. In an interview with the BBC for Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, she said: "I do reflect on whether I should have had a conversation with him, urging him not to run for re-election." After months of speculation about his health and mental acuity, President Biden ended his re-election bid in July 2024 after a disastrous performance in a debate against Donald Trump a few weeks earlier. Harris, who stepped in as the Democratic nominee but lost to Trump, has revealed in her book about her three-month campaign that she did not discuss with President Biden her concerns over his ability. Nor did the then 81-year-old raise the issue with her. In the book, 107 Days, the former vice-president wrote that Biden's decision to run again was a choice that shouldn't have "been left to an individual's ego, an individual's ambition". She wrote that "perhaps" she should have raised it with him. In this interview she told the BBC that she still ponders whether she should have acted differently and talked to him about it. "I do reflect on whether I should have had a conversation with him, urging him not to run." She said "my concern, especially on reflection is, should I have actually raised it". She questioned whether it was "grace or recklessness" that stopped her speaking up. Her worry, she added, was not Biden's capacity to do the job of commander in chief but about whether he would meet the demands of a gruelling election campaign to stay in the White House. When pressed on why there is a distinction, she said there was a serious difference between running for the office and conducting the duties of being president. And running against Trump is even more demanding, she said. She said she had a "concern about his [Biden's] ability, with the level of endurance, energy, that it requires, especially running against the now current president". The former vice-president said it was hard for her to speak up because she risked being accused of promoting her own political interests if she had confronted Biden about his health. "Part of the issue there was that it would – would it have actually been an effective and productive conversation, given what would otherwise appear to be my self-interest?" The issue of whether more people in Biden's circle could have challenged him about the wisdom of him running again has become a major talking point. One book, Original Sin by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, alleged that people close to him covered up his physical deterioration from the public. Biden's aides have pushed back at the allegation, saying there were physical changes as he got older but no evidence of mental incapacity and nothing that affected his ability to do the job. In his first interview after leaving the White House, in May of this year, Biden told the BBC it would not have mattered if he had left the race any earlier. His former vice-president is in the UK promoting her new book. In a wide-ranging conversation for the Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Harris also said it was "possible" she could run for the White House again. She has already ruled out running for governor in her home state, California, and the former prosecutor told the BBC she was "not done" with public service.

The Waqf Board bill was passed in Parliament, and not in the assembly, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari said on Sunday, taking a swipe at RJD leader and INDIA bloc Chief Ministerial candidate Tejashwi Yadav, after a party leader claimed "all Bills will be torn apart, including the Waqf Bill" if Tejashwi Yadav takes the top job. RJD MLC Mohammad Qari Sohaib made the remark while addressing a public meeting in Parbatta assembly constituency in support of RJD candidate and sitting MLA Sanjeev Kumar on Saturday. "People must vote for the INDIA bloc to make Tejashwi Yadav the CM of Bihar. Lessons will be taught to those who supported the Waqf Bill in Parliament. All NDA partners supported the Bill… if Tejashwi Yadav becomes CM, all Bills will be torn apart, including the Waqf Bill," Qari Sohaib said. Qari Sohaib's remark,BJP MP Manoj Tiwari said, are "already confusing the public". "The Waqf Board bill is passed in Parliament, not in the assembly... One should speak according to one's capacity... You should talk about what is in your capacity. When you (RJD) were in government, criminals ruled. These people (RJD) chant 'Jai Shahabuddin'... Tejashwi Yadav has a 56-inch-long tongue while the NDA has a 56-inch chest... Their identity is looting Bihar... Now, NDA will build big bridges, provide employment, AIIMS, and more assistance to Bihar..," he said. Soon after the RJD leader's comments went viral on social media, BJP’s national IT in-charge Amit Malviya posted on X, "From the RJD platform, an announcement — if Tejashwi Yadav becomes CM, they will end the Waqf law. The law will remain, but the intention to loot the land is clear. This is exactly what RJD’s jungleraaj is." No senior RJD leaders were available for comments on Qari Sohaib’s remarks. What Is The Waqf Law? The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, came into effect in April this year. Under this amendment, key provisions include digitising property records, regular audits of waqf boards, and the inclusion of non-Muslim communities, women and members of other Muslim communities such as the Shias, Pashmandas and Bohras in Waqf boards. As per the Centre, the Bill's purpose was to ensure better administration of waqf assets. However, the Opposition said that this was an unlawful attempt by the Centre to interfere in religious matters. In September, the Supreme Court, paused some aspects of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, after multiple challenges. It halted Section 3(1)(r), which required a person to have practised Islam for at least five years before creating a Waqf. It also struck down a clause that said a government officer would decide dispute cases involving waqf properties. The top court said that only Waqf Tribunals can handle such cases. It further stated that as far as possible, ex-officio members of the Waqf Boards should be Muslims, while refusing to stay the clause that permitted non-Muslims to be part of Waqf Boards.

Sonali Kulkarni on experimenting with different roles During a candid chat with us, Sonali recalled playing completely different characters in three films - Mission Kashmir, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya and Dil Chahta Hai. "That very year (in 2000) I had done Mission Kashmir. After which I did Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya by Ram Gopal Verma and then I did Dil Chahata Hai. So, the cliché we think that, in commercial cinema that you are typecast, was definitely ruled out. Because I played Sanjay Dutt's wife, Hrithik Roshan's mom (in Mission Kashmir). And then I play Fardeen's (Khan) wife (in Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya). And here, (in Dil Chahta Hai), I was Saif's (Ali Khan) girlfriend. I only celebrate my work. That's about it," she told Zoom. And of course, there is this innate exuberance and freshness that you want to direct and you are telling a story. There was Zoya (Akhtar) as the casting director and chief AD. Ritesh (Sidhwani) as the debutant producer," shared Sonali. Foreign investors have shown renewed interest in Indian markets this month, with the primary market continuing to offer a reliable avenue for profit, analysts noted on Sunday. The declining trend in foreign institutional investor (FII) selling, which began in early October, has persisted, reflecting growing confidence in Indian equities, according IANS report. During October, FIIs turned net buyers on multiple days, and cumulative selling through exchanges up to October 25 was minimal, at Rs 3,363 crore, according to NSDL data. “The long-term trend of FIIs continuously buying/investing through the primary market continued in October, too, with a total investment of Rs 10,692 crore (up to October 25). Investing through the primary market has been a steady source of profit for the FIIs and, therefore, this trend is likely to continue,” said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Ltd. However, on Thursday, FIIs turned net sellers with outflows of Rs 1,166 crore after five consecutive days of buying, signalling short-term profit booking. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) provided support, contributing net inflows of Rs 3,893 crore. Positive Market Drivers Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research, Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd., said, “FII inflows and upbeat management commentaries could help sustain positive market momentum, though intermittent profit booking cannot be ruled out. Meanwhile, any progress on the India-US trade deal front could further uplift investor sentiments,” added the report. Analysts point out several reasons FIIs may continue to invest in India. First, the valuation gap between India and other markets has narrowed, reducing incentives to move funds elsewhere. Second, earnings growth in India is gradually improving and expected to gain momentum in FY27. Consumption, Trade Deals, And Future Outlook Vijayakumar added, “Three, the Diwali sales this year across a large number of goods are an all-time high indicating a resilient economy and robust consumption. Four, there are indications of a trade deal between India and the US, which can substantially improve market sentiments.” These factors are expected to encourage FIIs to maintain buying in Indian markets. Nonetheless, analysts caution that at higher levels, FIIs may resume selling, potentially limiting a prolonged market rally. A children's home worker who raped a 15-year-old boy later found hanged was protected by fellow Freemasons in the justice system, a survivors campaign has claimed. The youngster was found dead in a bathroom of the notorious Shirley Oaks children’s home in Croydon in 1977, two years after the man he had accused of abuse walked free. Donald Hosegood, a confirmed Freemason, went on trial in 1975 for 11 counts of rape and indecent assault involving four children, but the case collapsed. Further allegations of sexual abuse were made against Hosegood in 1998 to the Operation Middleton inquiry in Lambeth, south london, but officers falsely claimed he had died. He finally passed away in 2011 without facing justice. Now the Shirley Oaks Survivors Association are calling for the Met Police to investigate the case after commissioner Sir Mark Rowley demanded secret society cops reveal their membership. Sir Mark spoke out after the discovery that three of five Met officers arrested on suspicion of covering up a sex assault are Freemasons. Masonic links between a detective sergeant accused of molesting a female colleague and two other cops alleged to have suppressed the case are being investigated. SOSA founder Raymond Stevenson, who was a friend of the dead boy, said: "During Operation Middleton hundreds of paedophiles got off and thousands of victims had their cases dismissed. "SOSA has evidence to show the failure to follow up leads was a deliberate strategy to protect fellow police officers who were in the clan. It's an archaic system, an old boys club whose existence discriminates against women. It has increasingly been used to protect wrongdoers and encourages them to commit crimes knowing them have the protection of senior Masons." It comes after a long-running investigation by the SOSA, led by Mr Stevenson and Lucia Hinton uncovered one of the worst child abuse scandals in British history. The scale only began to emerge in 2014 when the group was set up to represent children who had been sent to live in Shirley Oaks. In SOSA's report, Justice Is Above The Law, they name police officers who were allegedly either abusing children or covering it up due to their affiliation with secret societies, including the Masons and the Catenians, a Catholic association for men only. Mr Stevenson said he would be sharing it with MPs and relevant organisations. SOSA's work led to Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse that found hundreds of children in Lambeth's care were subjected to prolonged sexual, racial, and physical abuse. The inquiry, which SOSA refused to participate in, found Hosegood had waved a Masonic handbook at the officers who arrested him. Mr Stevenson said he suspects his friend, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was murdered by the house father who allegedly threatened to kill other children. He said: "When I heard about his death I made a promise that I would get justice . I always believed Hosegood was involved in his murder because he had attacked me." Compensation has been paid by Lambeth Council to five survivors who were found to have been abused by Hosegood. Among them was a man who at primary school age was repeatedly sexually assaulted by the paedophile over a two year period. The survivor said Hosegood threatened him with a knife after he caught him abusing a little girl. Other former Shirley Oaks residents said that Hosegood was part of a network of abusers that included swimming instructor William Hook and Fred Cummins, a deputy superintendent at the home. Lambeth has paid compensation to over 100 former residents for the abuse they suffered at the hands of the trio. Shayne Donnelly, 54, was in Shirley Oaks from April 1968, at a year old, until it shut in 1983. He was subjected to sexual, physical and racial abuse over a nine-year period, including attacks by Hook who was later jailed for ten years. Waiving his right to anonymity, Shayne said: ""I was abused by Hook who was best friends with Hosegood. It all makes sense learning that Hosegood was a Freemason and I believe that they were responsible for the death of the boy in Shirley Oaks. All of this was covered up by the police because of their masonic connections." Former resident Tony Brown was also attacked by Hook and gave evidence at his trial. Tony said: "What shocked me was that Hook had so much unchecked power for someone who wasn't even an official member of staff. I am not surprised he was connected to Hosegood and the other management paedophiles." Former Shirley Oaks resident Bill Maloney's late brother Steven first reported being sexually abused by Cummins in 1970 but he was never charged. Cummins, who SOSA say sexually abused 30 children, died in the early 1980s without facing justice. Bill said: "I have always known the police covered up the abuse that happened to my brother and learning that Freemasons and Catenians were involved explains how they got away with their crimes." SOSA said they believe members of the Catenian Association, a Catholic "Freemasons" organisation, also interfered with investigations including into notorious paedophile John Carroll. Ex-detective Clive Driscoll said he found evidence Carroll was a member of the organisation before he was booted off the case in 1997. Mr Driscoll said: "I always felt that there were senior officers that belonged to the same organisation as John Carroll. It makes sense that if a police officer belongs to any organisation, and there are many in the Metropolitan Police Service, that may cause victims and witnesses to worry about you, that they declare it immediately as a potential conflict of interest. That seems to be common sense." Carroll kept his job as a house father at the Angell Road children's home in Brixton despite a 1986 child sex abuse conviction coming to light. He was later sacked over another matter and jailed for 10 years in 1999 for sex attacks after a probe by Merseyside Police. A special report by the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee in 1999 highlighted fears that members of the Catenian Association, which was thought to include top-ranking police officers and judges, were using their influence to pervert the course of justice. The role of the Association came to light during a two-year investigation into Freemasonry conducted by the Committee.
Varanasi, more popularly called Kashi is a city where life and death seem to coexist along the ghats of the holy Ganga. While the city is home to dozens of ghats, Manikarnika is among its most sombre and pious ghats. It is on this ghat that funeral pyres are burnt every day. In fact, if legends are to be believed, it is said that this ghat has been active for thousands of years, with hundreds of cremations taking place here every single day. While Hindu funeral rituals are clear, there is one ritual that has stuck out, especially on social media, where it is going viral. The number ‘94’ is written on the ashes of those who have been cremated at the Manikarnika Ghat. Locals in Kashi say it’s a tradition known only to those who live near the ghats; outsiders performing the final rites often don’t even notice it. At this sacred cremation ground, once the fire cools and the ashes are ready to be immersed in the Ganga, the number 94 is written on the 'raakh'. According to Hindu philosophy, humans have 100 karmas (deeds) that control how their life and afterlife is. Of these, 94 lie within human control, while six, which include life, death, fame, disgrace, gain, and loss, belong to Brahma, the divine creator. The writing of ‘94’ symbolises the burning away of all humanly controlled deeds, those that define one’s moral, social, and spiritual existence. What remains, the six karmas, are beyond anyone’s reach. In a post on Quora, one user called Vipin Tripathimani, explained why this number is written on the pyre, “The Gita also states that after death, the mind takes with it five senses. This number is 6: the mind and the five senses. No one except nature knows where, in which country, and among which people one will be born next. Therefore, the 94 karmas burned away are going with the 6...The next 6 karmas will now create a new life for you." Some believe the number 94 itself is a mukti mantra, a prayer for liberation (moksha). After writing it, the priest breaks a water-filled pot over the pyre in a farewell ritual that symbolizes the severing of your ties with this world. For Kashi’s residents, “94” is a final message. Quite like a silent message that says 'You did what you could in this life. The rest is in the hands of the divine.

He and Rohit Sharma put on a 168-run partnership for the second wicket. Rohit, who was removed from captaincy before the Australia tour, bagged the Player of the Match award for his century. RAWALPINDI: Tomato prices have surged in local markets, selling at Rs370–400 per kilogram, as traders attribute the hike to floods in Punjab and the closure of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. They, however, expect the situation to improve with supplies arriving from Swat and Sindh in the coming days. “Although the rate of tomatoes has dropped slightly from Rs600 to Rs370–400 per kg, it is still unaffordable for the common man as it is a daily-use item,” said Rawalpindi Fruit and Vegetable Market Association President Ghulam Qadir Mir while speaking to Dawn. Explaining the reasons behind the price hike, he said that floods during the monsoon season, the closure of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, and the government’s negligence in bridging the demand-supply gap were the main factors. He added that most of the tomato supply usually comes from Central Asia and Afghanistan, but border tensions had disrupted the trade. Meanwhile, local supplies from Punjab were also affected due to floods. “Iranian tomatoes reached the market, but in limited quantities. Over the last two days, some supplies from Swat and Sindh have arrived, and we hope that the demand-supply gap will narrow, stabilising prices by next week,” he said. Mr Mir urged the government to take immediate measures to import tomatoes to stabilise prices. A senior official of the Punjab Agriculture Department said that tomato shortages typically begin in the winter season. However, the Punjab government had launched a project last year to grow tomatoes in the off-season in some parts of the province. He added that the devastating floods destroyed many of these areas, but farmers were expected to resume cultivation soon. Meanwhile, the district administration has failed to enforce the official price list issued by the District Market Committee, as food items are being sold at inflated rates across the garrison city. Price magistrates and other concerned departments appear helpless in implementing the directives. According to market data, tomatoes are being sold at Rs370–400 per kg against the official price of Rs180 per kg. Ginger is available at Rs600 per kg (official rate Rs520), garlic at Rs380 per kg (official rate Rs350), potatoes at Rs90 per kg (official rate Rs78), onions at Rs95 per kg (official rate Rs88), eggs at Rs350 per dozen (official rate Rs333), and chicken at Rs350 per kg (official rate Rs313). Residents of Rawalpindi have expressed anger over the unchecked price hike, particularly of tomatoes. “The shopkeepers are charging excessively, and no one stops them. Who can afford to buy tomatoes at Rs370–400 per kg? Most people have stopped buying them,” said Niaz Ahmed, a resident of Mohanpura. Muhammad Ayaz, a resident of Gawalmandi, said that the district administration had completely failed to control food prices. “People are struggling to buy sugar, wheat, meat, vegetables, and lentils,” he said. He lamented that the common man’s income has not increased for years, while prices of essential commodities have multiplied. “There’s no one in the government to control this inflation,” he said. Abrar Ahmed, a resident of Dhoke Khabba, said that managing a household budget has become nearly impossible. “With limited income, we can’t bear the inflation anymore. I now work two jobs just to make ends meet,” he said. Shopkeepers, however, defended themselves, saying they too were affected by high wholesale rates. “We purchase goods at higher prices from the wholesale market, so it’s impossible to sell them cheaply,” one shopkeeper said. The mastermind behind the attack on Haryanvi singer-rapper Rahul Fazilpuria is being deported to India. The accused, identified as Sunil Sardhania, was detained in Zurich, Switzerland. His deportation is in process. As per a report by NDTV, Sardhania was first located in Jerusalem, and from there he was being traced. Upon his arrival in India, Sardhania will be reportedly taken to Gurugram for further interrogation. On July 14, Rahul Fazilpuria reportedly escaped a gun attack unhurt after unidentified men fired at him in Gurugram. The incident took place on SPR Road in Gurugram when unidentified assailants fired two to three rounds at the singer’s vehicle. The miscreants fled the spot after firing. Gurugram Police reached the spot and launched an investigation. However, initially they could not confirm if the singer was fired upon. As the investigation continued, reports stated that the bullet hit the pole installed in the middle of the divider, as bullet marks were seen on it. Days after the attack, Sardhania claimed responsibility for the attack in a social media post. He also claimed that Deepak Nandal, a music producer, and Indrajit Yadav, an alleged member of the Himanshu Bhau gang, were involved as well. Sardhania, in the post, stated Fazilpuria had taken Rs 5 crore from Nandal and was not repaying the loan. Singer Fazilpuria also contested in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Gurugram on a Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) ticket. He lost to BJP’s Mukesh Sharma, who won the seat with over 1.22 lakh votes.
