Spiders will scurry away from windows and doors coated in 2 ingredients

If you're trying to avoid spiders, it's time to grab some white vinegar — and for a very good reason. It may seem odd, but this natural ingredient has a host of benefits, including keeping unwanted pests at bay. As you might have noticed, we're currently in the thick of spider season here. As the weather cools down, spiders start to venture indoors to mate and look for food and shelter. But you can halt them in their tracks by grabbing a spray bottle of white vinegar and heading outside. Experts say that white vinegar is an excellent natural deterrent for spiders. So if you want to prevent them from sneaking in through cracks or gaps in your doors or walls, spraying white vinegar near your home will do just that. These eight-legged critters have a highly developed sense of smell, and the scent of vinegar can overwhelm and confuse the chemoreceptors on their legs which they use to navigate their surroundings, reports the Express . "Vinegar can also be a handy natural deterrent, working in much the same way as essential oils," says Liam Cleverdon, cleaning expert and Director at Flooring King. "A simple mix of half white vinegar and half water in a spray bottle is enough; just spritz it around door frames, window ledges, or corners where spiders are likely to enter. "The only thing to watch out for is varnished or polished surfaces, as vinegar can dull the finish over time." This will be sufficient to prevent spiders from attempting to get into your property, and because white vinegar is non-toxic, it's safe to use indoors as well. Alongside white vinegar, there's another natural product that can prove extremely useful when attempting to ward off spiders: peppermint oil. Simply take some cotton wool balls, saturate them with the essential oil, and position them around any spots where spiders are most likely to gain access to your property, such as window ledges, doorways or gaps in walls or floors. "Peppermint oil emits a strong scent which repels spiders," said Robert Collins, pest control expert at MyJobQuote. "Add 15 to 20 drops of peppermint oil to a spray bottle with water and spritz this in any areas where you've noticed spiders in the home."

Anthony Taylor error spotted after Man Utd red card VAR drama vs Brighton

Manchester United were left feeling hard done by after Danny Welbeck's free-kick, which led to Brighton's first goal, was taken at least five yards ahead of where the foul occurred. Ruben Amorim's side were comfortably leading 3-0 when Brighton were given an opportunity to claw one back. In the 72nd minute, Patrick Dorgu was penalised for a tussle with Yankuba Minteh, who was through on goal but had taken a poor touch. Referee Anthony Taylor showed Dorgu a yellow card, and even after VAR reviewed the incident, it was decided that there was no need to upgrade the caution with the ball having already run through to Senne Lammens. While United supporters breathed a sigh of relief that the former Lecce player wasn't shown a red card, they were left incensed when the free-kick was taken well beyond the five-yard mark from where the foul took place. Video and photographic evidence clearly show that Dorgu fouled Minteh approximately 28 yards from the goal. However, Welbeck's subsequent free-kick was taken less than 23 yards from the posts. Despite the fact that the free-kick was taken further forward than it should have been, nothing can detract from Welbeck's superb strike. The former United striker expertly lofted his shot over the wall and past Senne Lammens. Brighton's Charalampos Kostoulas then managed to score another goal, sending shockwaves around Old Trafford. However, United held their nerve, scoring a fourth goal in stoppage time to secure a 4-2 victory. Bryan Mbeumo netted twice, with Matheus Cunha and Casemiro also scoring for the Reds as they secured their third consecutive Premier League victory for the first time since August 2024. Reflecting on his team's triumph over Brighton, Amorim shared after the match: "I feel good. I think we played well but we suffered in the end, a little bit, our fault in the way we conceded the first goal. "You can sense that, in that time of the game, we are near the fourth goal, not to suffer one. But they did everything. They run, they play with the ball, they kept the ball when it was needed. So it was a good game. "You have the game under control and then you suffer a goal," Amorim continued. "And then we suffer a little bit. They have a lot of talent. They have a lot of quality with the ball and they control that and they use that momentum to control the game. But we are improving in the way we respond to bad moments, and today, we did it again. "We respond a little bit better and that's really important. We know how to suffer. If we suffer together, it's so much easier to win games." 'I'm a dog trainer and there are five breeds I trust around my grandchildren'

A dog trainer has revealed the five dog breeds he’d “trust” most around his grandchildren. Dogs are among the most popular pets in the world , with millions of people opening their home to a four legged family member. Of course, everyone has their favourite when it comes to dog breeds, with many lifestyle factors contributing to their preference . Casey Ray, a content creator and “dog behaviour expert” regularly shares videos on YouTube offering insight based on his decades of experience working with dogs. In a recent video, he shared the top five dogs he’d most “trust” around his grandchildren, highlighting them as ideal options for families. Surprisingly, the beloved golden retriever didn’t feature in his list, despite regularly topping lists for the perfect dog for owners of all experience levels . Casey said “close to 30 years of experience” had gone into his decision making when compiling the list and explained: “I basically just came up with the five breeds that, you know, through working with year after year, that they're the easiest. "They're the ones that can go into a home that don't have trainers, that don't have a lot of knowledge and still succeed, and that's kind of what it's all about.” In fifth place was the Havanese, a bichon-type dog which is the national dog of Cuba. They’re small in stature and hypoallergenic. Casey branded them “fantastic” and “a companion dog”. He said: “I mean, it is almost hard to screw this one and number one up because they're small. There's no reactiveness.” The expert said they require “very minimal training” and are “a fantastic dog for the whole family.” In fourth place, he praised the Bernese mountain dog. Despite their large stature, Casey said they’re “very similar” to a “teddy bear”. They’re known for their affectionate and loyal natures, as well as their intelligence. He explained “this dog thrives in a family situation” and also needs “minimal training”. The expert stressed they do need to be socialised to ensure no issues but still insisted they’re a “fantastic” choice for families. Casey added: “Again, this is my opinion, but it's a fantastic breed.” People just need to bear in mind that they are big dogs, so are best supervised when with children. Early socialisation, consistent training and teaching children how to properly interact with the dog are essential for a safe and positive relationship. The quintessential family dog, Labrador retrievers are beloved thanks to their faithfulness, their intelligence, their friendliness and their outgoing personalities. Casey said: “Labradors are fantastic dogs. They make fantastic family dogs.” He went on to praise their adaptability, stating: “You can be active with them. [They can] cuddle up next to you on the couch. You can take them hunting. “You can do whatever you want with them. You can be active. You can go hiking. Labrador retriever, guys, is a fantastic family dog.” In second place was the poodle, known for being one of the most intelligent dog breeds, as well as their non-shedding, tightly curled coats. The breed comes in a range of sizes, and are popular thanks to their gentle nature and ability to be trained well. Casey said: “Poodles, all varieties. Fantastic dog. I mean, talk about intelligence through the roof. “You can do high-end obedience with them or they can just lay with you and be your best companion.” He added: “You don't see a lot of reactive or aggressive poodles”. In first place, Casey put the Cavalier King Charles spaniel, a small dog known and loved for their gentle, sweet nature and their strong desire to please their owners. Casey praised their reliability and said: “You can put these with infants, you can put these with toddlers, you can put these with a big family, with all kinds of kids, a lot of stuff coming and going constantly, and they're fine.” He added: “They'll be in the kids' rooms playing with them. This is what you want for a family dog.” Concluding, Casey issued a reminder: “This is a 10, 15, 20 year commitment depending on what breed you get, and you need to nail it right.” Dogs are a serious responsibility and lifestyle change. Always do your research before deciding to get a dog and remember, not all breeds are suitable for first time owners and training is usually essential. Experts also recommend you always supervise dogs when they are with children. No matter how friendly they are, you always need to be vigilant.

Wes Streeting delivers grim warning about voters 'despair' and says Labour must act

Wes Streeting has said Labour must act urgently to counter a "sense of despair" in Britain as he compared a by-election defeat to Keir Starmer's lowest moment in opposition. The Health Secretary delivered the grim diagnosis after Labour lost a critical Senedd contest in Caerphilly, in the party's Welsh heartlands. He said Labour must treat Friday's result as a Hartlepool moment, referring to the loss of a by-election in 2021 which prompted Mr Starmer to consider his future as party leader. But Mr Streeting insisted his comments were not an attack on the PM, and said he backed him to turn around the party's fortunes. He told Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips on Sky News: "There is a deep disillusionment in this country at the moment and, I'd say, a growing sense of despair about whether anyone is capable of turning this country around. "Now, I am an optimist in politics. I think there are green shoots of recovery in the NHS , in the economy, in our public services, but there is also so much more to do, and we've got to attack those challenges with the level of energy and focus that the scale of the challenge demands." Labour slumped to third place with just 11% of the vote in Caerphilly on Friday, a town that has backed the party for more than 100 years. Mr Streeting compared this to Labour's devastating defeat by the Tories in a by-election in Hartlepool in 2021. Mr Starmer considered resigning at the time, according to his biographer Tom Baldwin. Describing the Caerphilly result, Mr Streeting said: "Labour's response to that, the government's response to that, has got to be similar to the response that we saw from Keir Starmer when Labour lost the Hartlepool by-election. "That was a real shock to Labour's core. This was a solid Labour town, just like Caerphilly and what Keir did was take the result on the chin and also took it to heart and changed the Labour Party with a pace and scale of ambition. "That meant we were able to win a general election that no one thought we could win. We've got to do the same now in government. " Take that result in Caerphilly on the chin, take it to heart and show the same level of ambition and drive and the scale of change within government that the public are crying out for. "Because we need reform of the state, reform of our public services, reform of the economy, and only by doing those things and having people feel change are we going to rebuild trust in politics."
