NASU Urges FG To Implement Living Wage Policy Amid Inflation

News Investigators/ The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has urged the Federal Government to adopt a living wage policy to cushion the impact of inflation on workers. NASU President, Makolo Hassan, made the call on Wednesday in Abuja at the union’s two-day National Executive Council (NEC) meeting. Mr Hassan said the hardship faced by Nigerian workers had reached alarming levels due to inflation and economic instability, adding that “our wages no longer reflect the realities of today’s economy.” ”The concept of a living wage, not just a minimum wage, has become imperative if workers were to live with dignity and remain productive. “The government must go beyond minimum wage. A living wage must be tied to inflation and cost-of-living indices so that workers can meet their basic needs and live decently,” he said. He noted that the naira’s devaluation and rising energy costs had further eroded salaries, leaving many families struggling for survival. Mr Hassan also urged the government to renegotiate pending collective bargaining agreements across tertiary institutions and that industrial peace cannot thrive when agreements are neglected. He condemned attempts by splinter groups to weaken the union, stressing that NASU would continue to defend its jurisdiction as guaranteed by the Trade Unions Act. “The law is clear on union representation. No unregistered group has the right to collect dues or represent workers already under NASU’s jurisdiction,” he said. The union leader called for adequate funding of the education sector, saying poor investment in infrastructure and staff welfare undermines the nation’s future. He also urged government at all levels to strengthen social protection, healthcare, and housing schemes, saying “a protected and well-motivated worker is the true engine of national development.” Mr Hassan decried the growing casualisation of workers, describing it as “a modern form of exploitation that denies employees job security, benefits, and rights.” Earlier, the Director-General of the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, commended NASU for advancing workers’ welfare and sustaining industrial harmony. “NASU has remained a voice of conscience within Nigeria’s labour movement a union that stands for equity, accountability, and service,” Mustapha said. He added that NABDA values its partnership with NASU and that beyond welfare, the union is a partner in innovation and national development through its dedication to decent work. Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Organisation of Trade Unions of West Africa (OTUWA), Mr John Odah, urged unions to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool for progress. “AI should not be seen only as a threat to jobs but as a means to enhance productivity and drive national development,” Odah said.

Wales won't scrap refugee policy, says minister

The Labour-run Welsh government does not control immigration – those powers lie with the UK Labour government. However, ministers in Cardiff Bay have been keen to assist some asylum seekers and refugees. A statement from the Welsh government earlier this month said £55m had been spent on the "Nation of Sanctuary" policy between 2019 and 2025, less than 0.5% of the Welsh government's spending. Of that, £45m - 82% - had been spent on Ukrainians between 2022 and 2024. The Welsh government had sponsored arriving refugees from early on in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. A progress report from 2024 showed officials had helped refugees move on from asylum accommodation and to find work. Calls to scrap the policy have been made in the Senedd – the Welsh Parliament – by both the Welsh Conservatives and Reform. The issue was raised in the Commons on Wednesday at question time on Welsh issues by Smith, the Conservative MP for South West Devon. She said: "Labour ministers, supported by Plaid Cymru, are ploughing tens of millions of pounds into its Nation of Sanctuary policy, which is believed to support services for some illegal immigrants". "Isn't it high time her colleagues scrapped this wasteful, non-devolved policy and instead focussed of lowering NHS waiting times?" Anna McMorrin, in her first appearance at the despatch box as a Wales Office minister, said: "It sounds like the member opposite doesn't agree with welcoming thousands of Ukrainian refugees" which the policy "largely supported". She added the policy had been used "to welcome Ukrainians fleeing Russian aggression".

Luxury St Aubin house could be in top tier of Island’s most expensive

DESCRIBED as “a true one-off” and “probably” the finest property currently on sale in Jersey, a luxury property in St Aubin could be your’s… for £25 million. Maison d’Or, which boasts five bedroom suites, a “magnificent” entrance hall, extensive outside terrace space around a swimming pool, plus gym, sauna and parking for six cars, could rank in the top handful of the Island’s most expensive properties. Even if the property on Market Hill doesn’t quite reach its £25m asking price, it will still feature among the highest figures ever realised for a home on the Island. Earlier this year, another St Brelade house, Colline de Lavande on the Park Estate, was sold for £31.5m, while last year Maison de la Vallette in Trinity was sold for an undisclosed figure – the nine-bedroom property had originally gone on the market in 2021 for £39.9m, with the price dropping to £32m two years later. In 2021, a bidding war resulted in the £25m asking price for Eden House in St Brelade being pushed up to the eventual figure of £31m at which the sale was concluded. Construction of the current Maison d’Or started in 2019 following an eventful history for the site, formerly owned by the late businessman Ian McGlinn, a car dealer who was one of the original investors in the Body Shop in 1977 and eventually pocketed an estimated £145m after selling his shares in the company. Mr McGlinn acquired the site in the 1990s and began a project to construct an imposing three-storey luxury château-style house, complete with mock turrets at both ends. However, in 2002, as the house was nearing completion, it emerged that the owner was not satisfied with the finished product and he set about suing his UK-based contractor, which soon went into administration, along with the architect, structural engineer and quantity surveyor for the project. An exceptionally lengthy legal battle ensued, but in 2007, after sitting empty and completely unused, the building was demolished, with the site subsequently being left vacant for more than a decade. Mr McGlinn died at the age of 71 in 2010 after suffering a heart attack at his home in Monaco. Maison d’Or is being marketed by Broadlands.

“Energy for Romania” – dialogue among leaders in energy, education, and civil society at the first edition of the event (P)

The first edition of the “Energy for Romania” event, organized by Electrica Group and the Electrica Foundation, took place at Hala Filaret, the site of Bucharest’s first power plant. The event brought together more than 150 participants — representatives of public authorities, leaders in the energy and capital markets, academia, and non-governmental organizations — for an open dialogue on how energy, education, and social responsibility can converge to build a sustainable future for Romania. Alexandru Chiriță, CEO of Electrica Group, stated: “In 2022, when I joined Electrica Group, the share price was 6 lei. Together with my colleagues, we dreamed of what seemed impossible and today, with the share price at 23 lei, I can say that dream has become reality. Many ask me what I did to make this happen. The truth is that I did nothing alone — I simply gave people the freedom to be professionals and to build, day by day, the company we all want. But perhaps most importantly, we are successfully combining investments and economic performance with social and educational projects that give purpose to our development.” In his opening remarks, Mihai Diaconu, Chairman of Electrica’s Board of Directors, emphasized the connection between economic performance and social responsibility: “In 2025, there are still thousands of households in Romania without access to electricity. The energy infrastructure we manage is essential to community development, and our success cannot be measured only by financial indicators, but also by the real impact we have on people.” Radu Burnete, Presidential Adviser, highlighted Romania’s strategic role: “Romania can be a regional leader in energy, but to achieve this we need rapid investments in production, networks, and the market. We need competitive energy prices and a market open to private capital to support the energy transition.” The message was reinforced by Bogdan Ivan, Minister of Energy: “The energy system is not only about electricity or gas — it is about Romania’s economy and about becoming an economic champion. We must ensure that Romania is no longer dependent on energy imports but becomes a net exporter, with final prices for households and companies below the EU average.” Alexandru Petrescu, President of the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF), brought a capital market perspective: “When we talk about energy, we talk about a whole architecture of trust. Energy means technology, but also the ability to build confidence. These elements form the infrastructure through which a state delivers stability and protection for consumers, whether investors or end-users. Trust remains essential to advancing with confidence.” Supporting this view, Remus Vulpescu, CEO of the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB), underlined the role of the capital market in the green transition: “In July, Electrica listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange the largest corporate, non-financial green bond issue in Romania — €500 million fully dedicated to investments in renewable energy and storage capacities. This transaction is not just a numeric record, but proof that Romania’s capital market is ready to provide sophisticated financing instruments for the energy transition.” From the academic field, Mihnea Costoiu, Rector of the Politehnica University of Bucharest, pointed to the shortage of skilled human resources: “The 2024–2025 university year ended with 3,800 engineering graduates from Politehnica, while the market offered 39,000 job opportunities. This huge gap shows Romania is facing a major engineering shortage and urgently needs well-trained specialists.”

EFCC Arraigns 3 For Alleged N12bn Oil Theft

News Investigators/ The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday arraigned a vessel, MT Ostria, and three men before an Ikeja Special Offences Court over alleged N12 billion oil theft. The defendants are Raymundo Panaligam and Roneno Villarin, both officials of the vessel, and Vincent Wayas, a staff member of GMO, representing NNPC Retail Ltd. They were arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy to commit felony and stealing over 13 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). EFCC Counsel, Mrs Bilikisu Buhari, told the court that the defendants, in January 2024, conspired to steal 13,354,000 litres of PMS belonging to NNPC Retail Ltd. One of the charges alleged that the defendants, on Jan. 17, 2024, dishonestly took nine million litres of PMS, property of NNPC Retail Ltd. The EFCC further alleged that the defendants stole an additional three million litres, bringing the total volume allegedly stolen to over 13 million litres. According to the prosecutor, the alleged offences contravene Sections 280 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The defendants pleaded not guilty to all charges. The prosecution urged the court to remand the defendants in custody, arguing that they were flight risks who might abscond if granted bail. However, the defence informed the court that bail applications had been filed and pleaded that the defendants remain on EFCC administrative bail. Justice Mojisola Dada ruled that the defendants should continue on their existing EFCC bail conditions. The case was adjourned until Nov. 17 for the commencement of trial.

Yakuza video game even in Japan allows fans to both marry and divorce their 2-D crushes

Like a Dragon/Yakuza exhibition offers wedding ceremonies with charavter of your choice, provides paperwork to tie the knot and sever it too. The storylines of Sega’s Like a Dragon/Yakuza games get into some pretty crazy scenarios. Sure, they start off gritty and grounded, with missions focused on loansharking and personal injury scams, but before you know it you’re raiding a backup version of Osaka Castle that’s made out of gold, or infiltrating a secret battleship that’s been hiding underwater for decades. And yet, the most loyal fans of the franchise will tell you it’s the characters that really make them love the series. That’s why an upcoming event will give you the chance to marry your favorite member of the Like a Dragon/Yakuza cast, and also the chance to divorce them. To mark 20 years since the release of the first game in the franchise, the Like a Dragon 20th Anniversary exhibition will be opening in Tokyo in November, followed by dates in Osaka in February. Production materials and retrospectives will be on display, and there’ll be exclusive merch available for purchase as well, and the venue will also have a wedding corner with life-sized wedding-themed standees of 11 characters from the games. Fans can post for pictures with the character of their choice, with the list of eligible spouses consisting of the series’ original protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, new protagonist Ichiban Kasuga, scene-stealing Goro Majima, and six other men from the criminal underworld: Akira Nishikiyama, Taiga Saijima, Daigo Dojima, Yoshitaka Mine, Joongi Han, and Tianyou Zhao. There will also be two potential brides, Seonhee and, for those who prefer a romantic partner from the side of law and order, detective Kaoru Sayama. ▼ “Be joined with the person you love!” encourages/commands this promotional image for the event. For those looking for a more extensive coupling, an additional fee grants access to an AR app that allows you to pose at your leisure, with what appears to be a more immersive digital background, and lets you retain the data and print hard copies at convenience store kiosks. But if you really want to express your devotion, you can opt for a full-on wedding ceremony with your favorite Like a Dragon/Yakuza character! These premium packages include a wedding dress or tuxedo rental and the services of a professional makeup artists and hair stylist. Once you’re all spruced up, you’ll walk down the aisle to where your beloved is waiting for you to say your vows while a professional photographer preserves the occasion, and you can invite up to 10 friends or family members to attend the ceremony. The package even includes a marriage registration form to fill in with your and your crush’s particulars. Though not legally binding, it’s a way to make the experience feel a little more realistic…but heightening the realism actually causes some difficult questions to spring to mind. While the Like a Dragon/Yakuza cast work well as fodder for fantasized romance with a dashing yet dangerous lover, when you stop and think about it, would you really want to date someone who’s a professional criminal? Even the “honorable” Kiryu and Ichiban live very violent lifestyles, and are generally incapable of walking more than a block or two without getting into viciously violent fights with packs of total strangers, fights in which they routinely do things like stab their opponents with knives, body slam them into the pavement, or microwave their heads, all things that, in the real world, would likely be considered attempted murder. So while the marriage certificate makes the fantasy feel more realistic, that realism runs the risk of reminding you that a relationship with the Like a Dragon/Yakuza cast member probably wouldn’t work out, and so the wedding ceremony package also includes divorce paperwork for you to fill out if/when you realize getting hitched was a bad idea. The marriage registration and divorce papers will also be sold on their own at the exhibition, but they’re included in the wedding ceremony package, which is priced at 150,000 yen (US$1,000). With the Like a Dragon 20th Anniversary exhibition scheduled to run from November 28 to December 22 at the Shibuya Beam Gallery in Tokyo and February 6 to 24 at the Osaka Nanko ATC Gallery, there will be a limited number of available ceremony slots, to be awarded by lottery. Application details are yet to be announced, but the organizers have said that a total of 15 ceremonies will be held. With only 11 characters to choose from, that means at least one of them is going to be marrying with more than one fan, though, so those divorce papers really will come in handy if you’re not down for a polygamous relationship.
