Lindian rare earths green-lit for export by Malawian government

In a letter of clarification from the Director General of the Mines and Minerals Regulatory Authority (MMRA), dated October 28, the government recognises that Lindian’s subsidiary, Rift Valley Resources Developments Limited, will beneficiate its raw rare earths ore into a high-grade monazite concentrate at site before any export to external markets. The company says the official clarification provides regulatory certainty as it advances Kangankunde towards first production next year and transitions it into a globally significant rare earths producer. The news caps a turbulent 48 hours for Lindian shares. On October 23, reports of the executive order sparked investor caution, sending the stock down from A$0.385 to A$0.285 on October 27, amid broader concerns over potential export hurdles in Africa’s mineral-rich nations. Lindian swiftly countered on October 27 with an announcement emphasising its in-country beneficiation strategy - the highest locally-feasible level - and its track record of regulatory compliance. Yet, uncertainty lingered until today’s MMRA letter, which has ignited a swift rebound. By midday trading, shares had climbed 13% to A$0.322, recouping a good chunk of the lost ground and reflecting renewed confidence in the project’s trajectory.

Cyclone Montha: 30 IndiGo, 2 Air India, 5 Air India Express flights cancelled in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana

Visakhapatnam: In the wake of Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) Montha, over 35 flights between Shamshabad in Telangana and Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Rajahmundry airports in Andhra Pradesh have been cancelled, GMR Airports said. A total of 30 IndiGo, two Air India and five Air India Express flights have been cancelled as the SCS Month approaches the Andhra Pradesh coast around Kakinada. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), SCS Montha is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast around Kakinada during Tuesday evening or tonight with maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph. “The SCS Montha moved north-northwestwards and at 1430 hrs IST of 28th Oct, it lay about 70 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 150km south-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 250 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 480 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha),” the IMD said in a post on X. In the wake of heavy rainfall expected in 39 constituencies in Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed the Ministers, MPs, and MLAs to provide assistance to the people affected. Officials informed the CM that heavy rainfall is expected in Visakhapatnam, the erstwhile East and West Godavari districts, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, and Nellore districts. Earlier today, officials made announcements, urging people to vacate their houses in Kothapatnam village, as a precautionary measure for SCS Montha. NDRF teams have been deployed in Uppada. NDRF Inspector Biswas said, “The Team is deployed here for 24 hours. We came here two days ago. I visited here yesterday as well. The areas which I feel need evacuation, and people need to be taken to shelters, we are campaigning there. The cyclone is hitting this evening. There is no need to panic. We are coordinating with the local administration. I appeal to the people to reach shelters and cooperate with us.” The beach road of Kakinada and Uppada has been closed to prevent accidents after about an 8-kilometre stretch of the road suffered damage this morning. Meanwhile, in Odisha, fishing boats that had come from Andhra Pradesh are unable to return due to Cyclone Montha. All 50 fishing boats have been kept anchored in the harbour of Gopalpur port in Ganjam district. BJP MLA Krushna Chandra Nayak said, “All arrangements have been made for the Cyclone. Odisha CM has given instructions to the District Administration to be alert. District Administration has taken all steps for the Cyclone.” Tamil Nadu is also likely to witness moderate rain with thunder and lightning in several districts, including Thoothukudi. Banks’ investment in govt papers rises Rs5.8tr

KARACHI: Scheduled banks’ investments rose by over Rs5.8 trillion during the first nine months of 2025, reflecting both their continued preference for government securities and the state’s growing financing needs. According to State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) data, total investments of scheduled banks stood at Rs35.85 trillion by September 2025, up from Rs30tr in January — an increase of 19.3 per cent. The banking sector’s assets reached 52.4 per cent of GDP in FY25, compared to 49.1pc in the preceding fiscal year. The SBP noted that the sector remained stable across key indicators, though concerns persist over the limited flow of credit to the private sector. Banks continue to rely heavily on government papers for profits, while private lending remains subdued. Despite the central bank maintaining its policy rate at 11pc in its latest monetary policy announcement, trade and industry groups say borrowing costs remain too high to encourage new investment. Advances by banks fell to Rs13.46tr by September from Rs14.73tr in January — a decline of Rs1.27tr — highlighting reduced private sector credit demand. Sector profits remain strong as private lending continues to shrink Corporate investments in government securities have also risen, reaching Rs7.86tr by June 2025, or around 17pc of total holdings. Analysts say the trend indicates risk aversion among companies holding surplus liquidity, with many opting for risk-free returns instead of business expansion. The government’s interest payments for FY25 totalled about Rs8.89tr, lower than the initially budgeted Rs9.8tr, mainly due to easing interest rates and some fiscal relief. Meanwhile, banks’ deposits grew by Rs4.19tr during the same nine-month period, reaching Rs35.21tr by September from Rs31tr in January. Analysts warn that while the banking sector remains profitable and stable, continued reliance on government borrowing could crowd out private investment and slow economic recovery. We check out the new hamburger specialty shop with nice buns that has joined its sister shop I’m Donut? in Shibuya. A new Japanese restaurant specializing in hamburgers called 28 entered the burger game on October 11. It has the same operating company, Peace Put, as the I’m Donut? Japanese donut chain, which opened its first location in 2022 and currently has four locations throughout Japan. In fact, Neo Nice Burger’s first location happens to be directly above the Shibuya Miyamasuzaka location of I’m Donut. ▼ Never mind that the font of “Neo Nice Burger” looks like it’s a CAPTCHA wanting to confirm that you’re not a burger-seeking robot. According to comments on restaurant review sites, there had been a considerable line snaking out the door when the joint first opened its doors. However, now that almost two weeks have passed since opening day, the crowds had died down a bit when we visited at around 11 a.m. on a recent weekday. We were able to walk right in without a wait. Apparently the idea for Neo Nice Burger had been in the works for about five years before being realized. A large part of what sets it apart is that Peace Put manages another small chain of bakeries called Amam Dacotan in Tokyo and Fukuoka, so we had high expectations for the quality of the bread being used as hamburger buns. Not only that, but the restaurant also makes its own ketchup, mayonnaise, tomato sauce, and potato side dishes from scratch. Sure enough, a quick peek at the buns alone made us want to salivate. There was even more than one style, including plain, craft, and brioche buns. With this kind of care and attention to detail that goes into every part of a gourmet burger, we expected that the price would be equally high and mentally prepared ourselves before looking at the menu. However…huh?! A Neo Hamburger Set that comes with a burger, fries, and a drink only costs 950 yen (US$6.22). That’s actually way cheaper than we’d expected for a trendy burger specialty shop! In fact, even the most expensive sets only cost 1,260 yen each. Was there some kind of catch?! We were feeling in a fairly classic mood on this day and decided to spring for a Neo Cheese Set (1,050 yen) along with a hot coffee add-on (+55 yen). The fries and drink as part of the set only come in one size, but they were everything that we needed. We submitted our order for take-out and sat down to wait. (Note that the restaurant is fully cashless, so please plan accordingly before your visit.) It was fun to watch the baker at the front of the shop preparing more bread. The grill where the burger patties were being cooked was at the back. Our order number was called before long and the staff handed us a paper cup to fill with the beverage of our choice at the drink fountain. Soon the food was ready as well and we carried it home in excitement. We laid out all three parts of the set to snap a photo before digging in. The paper cup and fry holders were a pretty cool touch. ▼ Ignore the drink leakage–that’s the result of our own clumsiness while carrying everything home. The fries were thickly cut and still had the skin of the potatoes. They’re the perfect style for anyone who prefers softer, more potato-y fries over crispy ones. Now onto the main burger course. We opened the lid carefully… …to reveal a true craft cheeseburger! The sesame buns were definitely the biggest visual impact of the entire creation. The patty contained a healthy serving of melted cheddar cheese. On top of that was a generous amount of ketchup and minced onions with a hint of mustard mayonnaise. It was a simple but classic combination. That combination also proved to be the most delicious. Sure enough, the buns absolutely knocked it out of the park, just as we had predicted. They were completely different than buns at any other kind of major burger chain in Japan. It truly felt as if we were eating bread purchased at an upscale bakery. With this level of quality, handcrafted buns, and a very reasonable price, we’re going to call it now–we predict that Neo Nice Burger is going to fill a certain niche in the Japanese burger market that perfectly balances quality and price. We sure hope that it expands its number of locations as word catches on. Visakhapatnam: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said that Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Montha’ has weakened into a Cyclonic Storm over the coastal Andhra Pradesh and will maintain the intensity of cyclonic storm during the next six hours. As per the weather department, the Severe Cyclonic Storm “Montha” over coastal Andhra Pradesh moved nearly northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during past six hours, weakened into a Cyclonic Storm and lay centered at 0230 hrs IST of today, the 29th October 2025, near latitude 16.5°N & longitude 81.5°E, about 20 km west-northwest of Narsapur (Andhra Pradesh), 50 km northeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 90 km west-southwest of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 230 km southwest of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 470 km southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha). “It is likely to move nearly northwestwards across coastal Andhra Pradesh and maintain its intensity of cyclonic storm during the next 6 hours, and weaken further into a deep depression during the subsequent 6 hours,” IMD added. The latest observations indicate that the rear sector of the cyclonic storm “Montha” entered into the land. Meanwhile,Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi visited the control room at the Special Relief Commissioner’s office to review the situation ahead of the landfall of Cyclone Montha.Majhi reiterated the state government’s preparedness in view of Cyclone Montha, saying that Odisha is not under threat yet and that people have been relocated to safe locations as a precautionary measure. “We reviewed the graphical images of IMD in the control room regarding the ground situation of Cyclone Month..Odisha is not at much risk. All our teams are prepared for any situation. People have been shifted to safe places, and all arrangements have been made at the shelters,” he said. The Chief Minister said that pregnant women, sick people, and the elderly are being cared for. Schools and Anganwadis have been closed, and the authorities are keeping a strict vigilance for the next 24 hours. Book excerpt: Ritwik Ghatak’s journey in Hindi cinema and the path he chose not to walk

We are talking about 1955-56. Nagarik had been made, and its release scotched in 1952. He married Surama in mid-1955. The story of those years – Ritwik’s time in the city he called ‘rotten’ and ‘crude’ and ‘materialistic’ and ‘completely unsuited to any creative work’ – is to be found in the letters he wrote to his wife, published by her in a book titled Ritwik (Anustup Prokashoni, 1996). In the letters, we find a young man, just around thirty, missing his wife (to-be, to start with) and his city and the avenues to channel his creativity; not being able to build with his wife the life they might have hoped for, but also a man full of hope. Hope that he would be able to do something useful while at Filmistan; hope that he would earn enough money to put some sort of life together for his family; and that it would be the start of better things for him as a creator. ‘I just received a telegram from Salil Chowdhury, quite out of the blue. “Filmistan job almost fixed. Passage, hotel expense free. Start immediately!” We had a casual conversation around a year ago, and then this,’ Ritwik writes in a letter dated 26 April 1955, in which he charts out his plans. ‘I don’t have the money to buy a plane ticket. If you can wire me the money, I can travel on the 2nd [of May] and return to Calcutta by the 5th, catch a flight to Shillong and get married, and join work by the 15th. You and I can stay in Bombay for a month or so.’ ‘I won’t get the job’ As is evident, at no point did Ritwik have any illusions about Filmistan or Bombay. He wanted to take up the job for the money. He was thirty. About to be married. Not many paisas to his name, and living rent-free in the house of a friend, Bhupati Nandy, who worked in the theatre and in cinema. He had made one full-length film that no one had seen – Nagarik – and Nandy was part of the group that had produced the film. In short, it was all looking rather bleak for Ritwik. And while alcohol hadn’t made an appearance yet, it would soon. He would be expelled from the Communist Party of India by the end of the year. ‘If the contract comes through, I will get a lump sum straightaway. We won’t have any trouble setting up home. I can repay all debts and clear out of Bhupati’s house. We won’t have any worries; we can begin a new chapter.’ But he wasn’t counting his chickens yet. ‘I am going by the assumption that I won’t get the job.’ The job at Filmistan, as a writer, did come through. That’s how we got Musafir and Madhumati (later tweaked and made in Bengali as Rajkanya). The couple first moved into Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s house in Andheri. Bimal Roy’s studio was close by. Salil Chowdhury lived not far away. Keshto Mukherjee, who had made his acting debut with Nagarik and would later do small roles in Musafir, Ajantrik and Bari Theke Paliye, ‘stayed with us for a year as he was looking for work’, Surama writes. What a fun time they must have all had. Ritwik had started writing for Filmistan – or trying to write – and they shifted, not long after moving to Bombay, to a flat in Goregaon, close to where Filmistan was. At some point, they must have gone back to Calcutta, possibly to drop Surama back. And, upon returning to Bombay, Ritwik writes on 30 June 1955, ‘Salil tells me that Mukherjee [Sasadhar Mukherjee, the co-founder of Filmistan] was miffed that I didn’t meet him while in Calcutta, and that I have become useless after getting married and he had made a mistake by giving me the job. Anyway, I met him [Mukherjee], told him some vague things and have joined work formally.’ ‘It doesn’t look exciting at all’ Job in the bag, there was the question of work. And it started on the wrong foot. ‘It doesn’t look exciting at all. To be honest, there is no work. I just have to write some rubbish for the heck of it and go sit in the office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. I don’t think I can do much here seeing Mukherjee’s aversion towards me. I just have to grit my teeth and try to earn some money. I don’t know how successful I will be, but there is nothing else to do here. Doing good work, trying to prove my creative ability or trying to find fame ... all of it feels unattainable.’ This is all within a month-and-a-half of that first meeting with Mukherjee, remember. Ritwik appears to have given up already. And he wants to return to Calcutta. ‘This life is not for us,’ he writes, addressing Surama as Lokkhi, her name at home. ‘To work for money, it’s not something we have done before, and I feel filthy doing it now. If I can save up enough to repay the debts, which must be around a thousand rupees, and give Bhupati a hundred rupees a month for a year, I’ll give this up. [...] You must also try to find ways to earn something. I don’t want to stay away from Calcutta. If, between us, we can earn three-four hundred rupees in Calcutta, we can have a grand life. I don’t want to pay the price I must to make a name here.’ But things change soon after. He ‘sells’ a story, and he thinks up another one. The first will be a superhit film. The second will be a non-starter. ‘Bimalda wants to buy my story immediately, and it will be the next Bimal Roy Productions film,’ Ritwik writes on 5 July. In 1955, Bimal Roy Productions released Naukari, with Kishore Kumar in the lead role, and Devdas, starring Dilip Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, Suchitra Sen and Motilal. The company’s next release, in 1958, was Madhumati. ‘Bimalda has asked me to get started right away. He has promised to give me an advance of around 500 rupees in the next few days. I have found a small flat in Goregaon. If I get the advance, I will move there. Nothing is certain in this industry, so I won’t know for sure about the money till I actually get it. But I am hopeful.’ Ritwik, despite never making a film himself that made money except Meghe Dhaka Tara, which is considered a success, might have been capable of churning out successful films. Madhumati is an example. Musafir, though not as big a hit as Madhumati, is another. Plus, as you would have read elsewhere in this anthology, he once told Habibur Rahman Khan, the producer of Titas Ekti Nodir Naam, ‘I have wasted a lot of your money. I will write you a script, like I have done for others, and you make a commercial film with it. You will make a lot of money.’ It was just a path he chose not to walk.
