U.S Fed Interest rate cut decision: New Federal Reserve interest rates impact on 15-and 30-year mortgage rates. Check latest update

APFederal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell speaks at a news conference after the Federal Open Market Committee meeting Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2025, at the Federal Reserve Board Building in Washington. (AP Photo) U.S. Federal Reserve on Wednesday cut interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point. The 10-2 decision to lower the policy rate to a range of 3.75 per cent-4.00 per cent was expected by investors as a way for the Fed to temper any further decline in a job market policymakers worry may be losing steam. The Federal Reserve cut its key interest rate for a second time this year as it seeks to shore up economic growth and hiring even as inflation stays elevated.Wednesday's decision brings the Fed's key rate down to about 3.9 per cent, from about 4.1 per cent. The central bank had cranked its rate to roughly 5.3 per cent in 2023 and 2024 to combat the biggest inflation spike in four decades. Lower rates could, over time, reduce borrowing costs for mortgages, auto loans, and credit cards, as well as for business loans.Although mortgages account for the majority of consumer debt, these long-term loans are less directly influenced by Federal Reserve rate cuts. Both 15- and 30-year mortgage rates remain fixed for the life of the loan, meaning most current homeowners won’t see immediate changes in their monthly payments. Mortgage rates are instead more closely linked to movements in Treasury yields and broader economic conditions. However, analysts note that homebuyers could still see some relief if expectations of future rate cuts drive Treasury yields lower. That downward pressure could make borrowing slightly cheaper for new buyers and those looking to refinance. So far this year, mortgage rates declined after the Federal Reserve resumed cutting interest rates. The average rate on the popular 30-year fixed-rate mortgage dropped to 6.30 per cent at the end of September from about 6.56 per cent in August, data from mortgage finance agency Freddie Mac showed. It has since declined to a one-year low of 6.19 per cent. But lower mortgage rates have been somewhat overshadowed by growing anxiety over the labor market, with households instead taking advantage of the lower borrowing costs to refinance their mortgages.FAQsLive EventsQ1. Support for democracy declining in South Africa – report

Fewer than half of South Africans now say democracy is the best form of government, the latest Afrobarometer survey has indicated, a finding that an analyst says reflects a worrying loss of faith in the political system across Africa. ”The share who support democracy has increased since the historic low recorded in 2021,” said Afrobarometer. For the first time in over 25 years of surveys, the proportion of citizens supporting military rule has surpassed those opposing it. Nearly half of the respondents indicated their willingness to support the army in taking over the country’s leadership. The report indicates that most South Africans are dissatisfied with the functioning of democracy. “Fully seven in 10 South Africans are dissatisfied with the way democracy functions in the country.” Dissatisfaction is highest among the poor, the unemployed, and middle-aged citizens who feel that they are being ignored by politicians. Unemployment was listed as the most serious problem facing the country, followed by crime, security, water, infrastructure, and corruption. These ongoing issues have left many South Africans frustrated and hopeless. “Unemployment is the most important problem requiring government intervention,” Afrobarometer said. The survey also shows mixed views about the new administration. “Four in 10 citizens think the Government of National Unity (GNU) has been effective at solving the country’s most pressing problems, but a similar proportion disagrees.” Political analyst Siyabonga Ntombela said the trend is not unique to South Africa. ”This is happening continentally. There is a number of countries that are following Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso’s style of leadership. These countries appear to benefit more under the military rule than they have under years of democracy,” he said. Ntombela explained that local politics also plays a role in this shift. ”The majority of ANC faction parties (EFF and MKP) are predicted on military ideals,” he added. “They venerate leaders such as Thomas Sankara, Che Guevara, Fidel Castro and others. The material conditions have remained unchanged for the poor. Therefore, such alternative rule promises hope for the downtrodden of the country.” However, Ntombela warned that a rise in support for military-style rule could come with grave consequences. “With military rule violence is inevitable. People like Frantz Fanon claim that violence is a necessary condition to decolonise and usher in true freedom,” he said. First published by IOL

A cosmic Halloween treat: NASA's James Webb telescope reveals eerie Red Spider nebula

Global Desk Scientists have revealed a mesmerizing latest image of a “cosmic creepy crawly” just in time for Halloween. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has disclosed never-before-seen data of the eerie Red Spider Nebula, a haunting structure situated almost 3,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius.Spotted via JWST’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), the stunning image showcases the nebula glowing vividly against a sea of thousands of stars. At the centre of this celestial marvel shines its central star, illuminating just brighter than the web-like strands of ionized gas that swirl in it.Dr. Mikako Matsuura of Cardiff University’s School of Physics and Astronomy described,“Out in the darkness of the Universe there are many eerie and ghostly nebulae. Among the many so-called ‘spider nebulae,’ one stands out for its chilling resemblance to a cosmic creature – the Red Spider Nebula, whose twisted filaments stretch like the legs of a celestial arachnid.”Dying Star’s Final PerformanceThe Red Spider Nebula is a planetary nebula, formed when a Sun-like star reaches the conclusion of its life. As these stars extend into cool red giants, they shed their exterior layers into space, showcasing a hot core. The ultraviolet radiation from this core ionizes the expelled gases, making them glow and form stunning structures such as the “legs” of the Red Spider.Live EventsWebb’s powerful imaging has, for the initial time, disclosed the complete extent of these massive lobes, closed, bubble-like types stretching approximately three light-years each. These wide formations are believed to have been expanded over millennia by streams of gas bursting from the nebula’s heart. The Mystery at the Nebula’s HeartAlthough only a single star is visible in the nebula’s center, researchers suspect a concealed companion star may also reside there. This hidden partner could describe the nebula’s narrow waist and wide, extended lobes.Dr. Matsuura stated,“The legs are hairy and shine with molecular hydrogen emission, which have escaped from the torus (doughnut-shaped ring). It is still unclear why the outflows appear ‘hairy’. One possibility is that the outflow from the primary star was not continuous, perhaps because mass transfer from the companion star affected the timing of the outflow.”“Another possibility is that the outflow interacted with the surrounding interstellar medium. Since the interstellar gas is not uniform to begin with, such interactions could cause the outflow to fragment, creating the hair-like structures along the legs.”A Web of Cosmic ActivityGas appears to be seen jetting from the nebula’s heart in a faint purple “S”-shaped stream, aligned with the heart of the Red Spider. Earlier optical pictures featured this central star as faint and blue, but JWST’s near-infrared capabilities have portrayed a deeper, more complex view, spotting wavelengths not visible to the human eye.A Fleeting Moment in Cosmic TimeThough beautiful, the Red Spider Nebula’s glow is short-lived. The planetary nebula stage shows a brief period in a star’s lifecycle, lasting only a few tens of thousands of years before the material fades into space. With its glowing tendrils, radiant core, and web-like filaments extending in space, the Red Spider Nebula is a stellar masterpiece , both a reminder of cosmic mortality and a perfect Halloween treat from the universe itself.FAQs:1. What is the Red Spider Nebula? It’s a planetary nebula formed from the remnants of a dying star. 2. Who captured the new image of the Red Spider Nebula? The picture was taken by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope using its Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam).Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now! K-Drama: Trump gets a crown, Seoul easier investment terms

AgenciesTrump and Lee Jae Myung Gyeongju: The United States and South Korea advanced trade talks on Wednesday, addressing details of $350 billion that would be invested in the American economy, after negotiations and ceremonies that included the presentation of a gold medal and crown to President Donald Trump. Both were gifts from the country's president, Lee Jae Myung, who dialed up the flattery while Washington and Seoul worked to nail down financial promises during the last stop of Trump's Asia trip.Although both sides said progress has been made - Trump said things were "pretty much finalized" - no agreement has been signed yet. The framework includes gradual investments, cooperation on shipbuilding and the lowering of Trump's tariffs on South Korea's automobile exports, according to Kim Yong-beom, Lee's chief of staff for policy.July DealThe allies unveiled a deal in late July under which Seoul would avoid the worst of US tariffs on its imports by agreeing to pump $350 billion of new investments into the United States in return for lower tariff rates. But talks over the structure of those investments had been deadlocked and both sides had played down expectations for a deal during Trump's visit.Live Events INVESTMENTS in USTrump and Lee agreed that Seoul can split its promised $350 billion investment fund into $200 billion in cash to be paid in instalments and capped at $20 billion per year, Lee's aides said. The other $150 billion is to be spent on investments in shipbuilding, which South Korea has promised to help Trump restore. The South Koreans said the two sides agreed to split profits 50/50 before the initial investments are recouped, and to only pursue commercially viable projects. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick would head an investment committee to assess potential projects. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the details of a Korea trade deal, which needs to be ratified by South Korea's parliament.Talks with Xi Today Speaking to reporters en route to South Korea, Trump said he was squarely focused on his meeting with Xi, leader of the world's second-largest economy. "We're going to have a very good outcome for our country and for the world, actually," Trump said.'Too Bad I Can't run for 3rd term'Trump also said that "it's too bad" he's not allowed to run for a third term, conceding the constitutional reality even as he expressed interest in continuing to serve. "If you read it, it's pretty clear," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. "I'm not allowed to run. It's too bad."Trump's comments came a day after House Speaker Mike Johnson said it would be impossible for Trump to stay in the White House. "I don't see the path for that," he told reporters at the US Capitol on Tuesday. Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now! URA finally win a League game, subdue UPDF in five-goal thriller

URA FC finally know what victory feels like after securing a hard-fought 3-2 win over UPDF FC in a thrilling encounter played on Thursday evening at Nakivubo Stadium. The Tax Collectors who have endured a difficult start to the 2025/26 season had seen all their first four League games ending in draws, against BUL FC (0-0), NEC FC (1-1), Express FC (1-1) and most recently Lugazi FC (0-0). Actually, the winless run for URA stretched up to the last day of the previous season, when they lost 1-0 to NEC FC on 24th May 2025. This equates to 450 minutes of football. Therefore, today’s victory against the Army side came as a relief to both the coach and players. However, it I didn’t come on a silver platter as UPDF put up a fight in the thrilling game. URA had to dig deep to edge UPDF, inspired by skipper Moses Okabo Aliro who bagged a brace with George Masembe scoring the other goal for the hosts. On the other hand, Andrew Samson Kigozi and experienced striker Samuel Kayongo Ssekamatte scored for the visitors. Aliro fired URA into the lead in the 24th minute, calmly slotting home when Joseph Ssemujju teed him up. The lead lasted only two minutes with Kigozi restoring parity for UPDF FC. Two minutes before the break, the hosts regained their lead through Masembe, thanks to a long throw in by right Justin Opiro. At the stroke of half, Nelson Senkatuka thought he had stretched the lead for the Tax Collectors but his effort was ruled out for offside. Eight minutes after recess, UPDF once again drew the game level, this time through Ssekamatte who converted from the spot after Opiro fouled in the box. In the 70th minute, URA FC goalkeeper was called to action to deny the visitors from taking the lead with a fingertip save. Six minutes later, URA also got awarded a penalty when substitute Living Kabon was fouled in the area and captain Aliro took the responsibility to burry it home and eventually turned out to be winning goal. URA’s first win of the season propels them to sixth place on seven points while UPDF remain 12th on the table with just three points from four games.

Minority in Parliament files motion to suspend Chief Justice's vetting pending court case

The Minority in Parliament has tabled a motion seeking the suspension of all parliamentary proceedings related to the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice until the conclusion of ongoing legal cases challenging the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. Invoking Articles 110(1), 125–127, 144(1), and 146 of the 1992 Constitution, along with relevant Standing Orders, the Minority is urging Parliament to halt the Appointments Committee’s vetting process, as well as any plenary debates or approval sessions. The motion references several pending suits, including one before the ECOWAS Court (Suit No. ECW/CCJ/APP/32/25) and others in Ghana’s Supreme Court and High Court, all contesting the legality of Justice Torkornoo’s removal from office. It further calls for the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to appear before Parliament to brief lawmakers on the status of the litigation, outlining the identities of the cases, any interim or conservatory orders, reliefs sought, and the implications for the Chief Justice’s office. The Minority also demands clarification on Ghana’s treaty obligations in connection with the ECOWAS Court case and a government assessment of potential legal or constitutional risks should the nomination process proceed while the disputes remain unresolved. The motion follows President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to succeed Justice Torkornoo, whose removal has become the subject of multiple legal challenges.

The Dolphins only have two wins, but one Miami defender will take the field with three when they host the Ravens on Thursday Night Football

Miami Dolphins captain and starting linebacker Jordyn Brooks has one more win than the rest of the squad thanks to the news today that Brooks has won the AFC's Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against the Falcons in Week 8. The decision is considered a bit of an upset given that Brooks was contending against Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett — who logged five sacks in a loss to the New England Patriots this past Sunday. As it turns out, getting a win and a dominant team performance was plenty to help tip the scales. Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks' Week 8 performance 10 total tackles 1 quarterback sack 1 quarterback hit 3 tackles for loss AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors Brooks has been sensational since arriving in Miami in 2024 as a free agent signing. He's posted 228 total tackles in 25 games so far as a member of the Dolphins, plus 5.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. Against the Falcons, Brooks finished with 10 combined tackles, a sack, three tackles for loss and an additional quarterback hit. He'll enter Week 9 play leading the league in total tackles (85) and solo tackles (53). Miami will need a lot more production from Brooks tomorrow night if the team is going to successfully bottle up Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and company to score a second consecutive win. The good news? His play suggests Brooks is more than up for the challenge. window.addEventListener('message', function (event) {if (event.data.totalpoll && event.data.totalpoll.action === 'resizeHeight') {document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-426').height = event.data.totalpoll.value;}}, false);document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-426').contentWindow.postMessage({totalpoll: {action: 'requestHeight'}}, '*')
