Nigeria’s future depends on hybrid intelligence in AI-driven world, says Aguene, AI Tech expert

Tech expert and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bildup AI, Mr. Chibuike Aguene has said that Nigeria must take proactive steps to equip its young people with the skills needed to thrive in the new era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is revolutionizing industries and redefining the workforce. He said that the future of work will be powered by hybrid intelligence, where human intelligence is augmented with AI. Speaking on AriseTV Newsnight on Saturday, Aguene said that top CEOs worldwide are already investing heavily in AI with tangible results, adding that they are recognizing it is no longer a long-term bet, but a current necessity. He said: “We ‘re not just experiencing a tech shift like we’ve seen over the past decades. We’re living through workforce revolution, the like of which we’ve never seen before, where intelligence is going to be hybrid, partly human and partly machine. “Let me just give you a context of the talks about intelligence being hybrid. Everything that we see that exist today, like television, aircraft, talk about mobile phone was done by human intelligence, maybe with technology, but we are now transitioning into a super human employees era where intelligence will be hybrid. So, the workforce of the future will be powered by young people that will augment their intelligence with AI. “All the top CEOs across the world are investing heavily in artificial intelligence, and most of them are seeing results. This is no longer a long term bet. It is something that they are seeing result. It’s an interesting time to be alive. “But it’s also poses a challenge for us in Africa, where we have not even been able to equip young people to have developed human intelligence to meet up with what is happening in the world, and now we are talking about hybrid intelligence, where you have superhuman employees. So, we are supposed to start preparing. That is the direction that every business owner, that’s the conversation they should be having now: how to integrate artificial intelligence, how to prepare your staff and re-train them. You are hiring new people, AI must be at the center of it. “AI is no longer an experimental thing. It is now operational. And any business that says this AI thing doesn’t concern us is not going to be in business for too long. So, I’m excited. It’s also a challenge, like I mentioned earlier, for us as a nation, to start thinking of, how do we prepare the next generation. Otherwise, we’re going to lose the next generation in terms of creativity and productivity. “We are living in super human era. Super human intelligence is going to be augmented with AI. Let me just tell you something, anybody that is maybe five years old or three years old today will laugh when they hear that we once operated with only human intelligence. Their generation is going to experience something completely different. They’re going to live in an era where intelligence is hybrid. The way we are living now would just be part of history that humans once live in an era where they operated with only their intelligence. So, this is not something that we are going to just ignore. Nigerians should not be left behind”. Aguene however said that to stay ahead, Nigeria must start preparing now by investing in education and training programmes that focus on developing hybrid intelligence, encouraging businesses to adopt AI, and promoting a culture of innovation and adaptability. “AI is no longer a distant concept. It’s right here with us. We are going to reorganize or rethink entire workflows in every organization. There are three dimension to this. One is in terms of education, how we’re educating the people that will fill the workforce of tomorrow right now, I don’t think there is any school that you go and hear superhuman or you hear hybrid intelligence, but that’s what the reality they are going to face. “So for a business owner, imagine, for example, you have a customer support personnel there, and they work nine to five. There’s a limit to what they can accomplish that within that timeframe. But if you augment the intelligence with artificial intelligence, they will be able to accomplish what would have taken maybe five months. “We are entering an era of solving things that were termed impossible, so that on the business side. So if you do not apply that, you are not going to be in business. So that means that for business to work, you need talents that have AI as part of their skill set, that on that side. Then, the other part, which I think is very, very important, is all stakeholders coming together. This is not something that will happen in silos. There has to be cooperation across board. Like for those of us in the technology space, we have a platform that is already equipping people, preparing them to become superhuman. “The term superhuman will become common. Hybrid intelligence will become common in the next few months or years. It’s something that all of us should start getting used to, because that’s the reality of what is going to happen, and it’s something we’re excited about. So there will be industry collaboration,” he said.

Obebe seeks enabling environment for private sector participation in environmental sanitation

The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Clean N Classy, Olumide Obebe, has called on government to create an enabling environment for private sector participation in environmental sanitation. He said cleanliness should not be seen as sole responsibility of government but a collective societal duty. Speaking in Ibadan at a briefing to mark the one-year anniversary of the company’s Ibadan branch, Obebe said Clean N Classy’s commitment to complementing government’s efforts in ensuring a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment across Nigeria. He emphasised that his firm has consistently demonstrated professionalism, compliance, and high-quality service in all its operations. He said, “We feel it is part of our social responsibility as a company to contribute to the growth and development of the society. We have always believed that the government cannot do it all. “Cleanliness is the business of everybody. If we all play our part, the government’s efforts will be more effective, and our environment will be cleaner and healthier. One of our achievements so far is 100 percent customer satisfaction. This expansion shows that we are improving and growing within a short period.” Obebe also commended regulatory agencies for their collaboration and called for continued synergy between the private and public sectors in the sanitation and environmental management space. “We have gone through rigorous registration processes with relevant environmental agencies to ensure compliance. Sometimes, some officials who are unaware of our credentials may try to challenge us, but we always approach such situations positively and prove our competence.” He stressed that cleanliness plays a vital role in public health and economic development, urging Nigerians to adopt proper hygiene practices as a preventive measure against diseases. “When we have a clean home, we reduce the risk of diseases. If our surroundings are clean, hospitals will be less crowded. That is why we chose to invest our resources in this sector, because cleanliness is next to godliness.” Obebe also used the occasion to commend the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and urged it to intensify public enlightenment on hygiene and environmental responsibility. “We have a long way to go as a nation in maintaining cleanliness. Countries like Qatar have set high standards in environmental maintenance. In Nigeria, we need massive reorientation; if we get cleanliness right, sickness and pandemic rates could drop by 50 percent in just two years.”

Dealers attributed the naira’s advance to stronger forex supply and reduced speculative demand, as the CBN maintained its interventions to stabilise the market. Abudulahi, a BDC trader, confirmed the appreciation of the naira, he said: "For us, this is not the best time to buy dollars because we can't predict the next movement. The market is very dry and we hardly get customers to buy from us." Trump's comments raises concerns The gains for the naira came as US President Donald Trump declared Nigeria as a ‘country of particular concern’ in response to allegations of a Christian genocide in the country. Trump announced his decision in a Truth Social post on Friday, which was shared on the White House’s X handle. According to a publication by the Family Research Council in 2022, to declare a country a “country of particular concern” is an official designation typically made by the US government, primarily the Secretary of State, under specific US laws, Punch reports. The exact meaning and implications of the designation depend on the specific legislation applied, but it generally indicates that the country engages in activities detrimental to US interests or universal human rights standards, and Trump has warned it must stop. In the post, the US President wrote: “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass killing. Trump's making Nigeria a ‘country of particular concern." “But that is the least of it. When Christians, or any such group, are killed like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 versus 4,476 Worldwide), something must be done!" Every year, like clockwork, a familiar national drama unfolds across Ghana. It’s that season of anxious parents, teary-eyed children, long queues at cyber cafés, and countless phone calls to “someone who knows someone”. The Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) – a well-intentioned innovation meant to make senior high school placement fair and efficient – has again thrown thousands of families into turmoil. What should be a celebration of academic progress often turns into heartbreak, confusion, and, for some, despair. The promise and the pain When the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) introduced the CSSPS in 2005, the idea was brilliant on paper. It aimed to eliminate favouritism, streamline admissions, and make access to senior high education more equitable. Using algorithms to match students’ choices with their performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), the system promised transparency and fairness. Nearly two decades later, however, what was meant to bring order has often bred chaos. Every placement season, social media buzzes with desperate appeals from parents whose children have been sent to schools they never chose, sometimes hundreds of kilometres away. Others find their children unplaced altogether – left in limbo, uncertain of their next steps. And as frustration mounts, human ingenuity (and opportunism) sets in. Middlemen and “protocol agents” emerge, offering to “fix” placements for a fee. What was meant to be a clean system has, sadly, become one more avenue for exploitation and corruption. A Parent’s Ordeal Picture this: A mother in Kumasi wakes up at dawn to queue at an internet café with her 15-year-old daughter. They have been there for hours, trying to access the placement portal. The website keeps crashing. When it finally loads, their joy turns to disbelief. The girl, who scored highly in the BECE and chose three top schools in the Ashanti Region, has been placed in a school in a remote district in the Upper East. The mother’s first instinct is to think it’s a mistake. “Maybe they mixed up the names,” she says, her voice cracking. But soon, she realises she is one among thousands facing the same predicament. The family now faces impossible choices – should they send their daughter to a faraway school they can barely afford to visit, or should they scramble to change the placement through unofficial channels? This is not an isolated story. It’s a ritual of frustration that plays out every year in thousands of homes. What’s Really Going Wrong? There is no doubt that the CSSPS has helped expand access and reduce blatant bias in admissions. But its recurring failures suggest deeper systemic weaknesses. Firstly, the algorithm itself is only as good as the data it receives. Many pupils – often through no fault of their own – make poor school choices because they are not properly guided. Teachers and parents may not fully understand how the placement matrix works, leading to unrealistic selections that reduce a student’s chances of being matched. Secondly, infrastructure and connectivity remain major challenges. Every year, the placement portal slows down or crashes under heavy traffic. Parents queue in the heat, clutching printouts and passwords, trying to navigate a system that seems stacked against them. For many rural families, internet access and digital literacy are additional hurdles. Thirdly, the communication gap is glaring. The Ministry and GES often release placements abruptly, without adequate sensitisation or support hotlines. Parents are left to rely on rumours, radio discussions, or social media misinformation. And finally, there’s the human factor – the perception, and sometimes the reality, of manipulation. Some families who can “make calls” or pay “processing fees” seem to secure better outcomes. This perception of backdoor influence undermines trust in what is supposed to be a fair, computerised process. When Technology Lacks Humanity At its core, the placement system is not merely about computers or algorithms. It’s about human lives – young people’s dreams, parents’ sacrifices, and a nation’s hope for its future workforce. We cannot reduce that to a formula on a screen. Technology should be an enabler, not a barrier. Yet, too often, the CSSPS has become a faceless mechanism that alienates those it was meant to serve. A truly human-centred approach would ensure that the system is not just efficient, but empathetic – that behind every “unplaced” student is a real child with aspirations, not a data point to be deleted or transferred. The Emotional Toll The emotional toll on parents is profound. For many families, education is the single greatest investment they can make in their children’s future. Years of toil, savings, and hope culminate in the BECE results. Then comes the placement – the moment of truth. When the outcome feels unfair or arbitrary, it can break spirits. Parents feel betrayed by a system they trusted. Children feel unworthy, even when they performed well. Teachers feel demoralised, seeing bright students demotivated. And amidst the chaos, the public discourse often blames the victims – accusing parents of “chasing big schools” or students of not performing well enough. This blame game distracts from the real issue: a system that, while noble in intent, still lacks compassion and responsiveness. Learning from Others We need not reinvent the wheel. Several countries have faced similar placement dilemmas and found more humane ways to manage them. In the United Kingdom, for instance, while school placement is centralised, parents can appeal decisions through transparent review mechanisms. There are helplines, detailed online guides, and public accountability measures. In Kenya and Rwanda, national placement systems have adopted hybrid models – combining automated allocation with human oversight and strong community support. In both cases, parents receive early orientation on how to select schools realistically based on performance and catchment considerations. Ghana can learn from these best practices – not by copying blindly, but by adapting thoughtfully. Charting a Way Forward So, what can be done to end this yearly heartbreak? Several practical steps could help:Enhanced Guidance and Counselling School selection should not be left to chance. Every basic school should have trained counsellors who guide pupils and parents through the process, explaining the realistic implications of their choices. Early Sensitisation Campaigns The Ministry of Education and GES must launch nationwide education campaigns before and during the selection window. Clear, multilingual communication through radio, TV, and social media will help families understand how the system works. Improved ICT Infrastructure The CSSPS portal should be hosted on robust servers capable of handling national traffic. Collaboration with private sector ICT firms could help improve user experience and reduce downtime. Transparent Appeals Process Introduce an official, time-bound appeals mechanism – easily accessible both online and at district offices. Parents should be able to request a review of placements without resorting to middlemen. Stronger Monitoring and Accountability The GES must ensure that no unauthorised persons or intermediaries interfere in the process. Publicly naming and prosecuting offenders would deter corruption and restore confidence. Incorporate a Human Touch Beyond data, human review panels can help address exceptional cases – such as students with disabilities, single-parent households, or special circumstances – to ensure fairness. A Call for Empathy and Leadership Ultimately, this is not just an administrative issue. It is a moral one. When a nation’s children are made to feel helpless in the face of bureaucracy, we chip away at their faith in public institutions. When parents must beg or bribe to secure what should be their children’s right, we corrode the values of fairness and meritocracy we claim to uphold. We must therefore insist on leadership that not only deploys systems, but also listens to the people those systems are meant to serve. Every stakeholder – from the Ministry to headteachers, from ICT officers to local assemblies – has a role to play in restoring dignity and compassion to this process. In the End, It’s About the Children Let us not forget what this is all about: children who have worked hard and dream big. Every year, we tell them education is the key to success. We owe it to them to ensure the door opens smoothly. Until we fix this recurring problem, the annual placement exercise will remain a national spectacle of frustration – a story of hope meeting heartbreak. But with honesty, transparency, and empathy, Ghana can turn the page. The computer may make the match, but it is the human heart that must make it right. Former schoolmate of late Ochanya shares how deceased girl behaved then in school

A Nigerian lady has shared a heartbreaking post on TikTok speaking about the late Ochanya Ogbanje who died of abuse According to the young lady she attended the same secondary school with the late Ochanya and they both had the same guardian Social media users who came across the heartbreaking post on TikTok penned heartfelt comments mourning the deceased girl A young Nigerian lady has moved many to tears on TikTok after narrating her personal experience with the late Ochanya Ogbanje, the teenage girl whose tragic death was linked to abuse. In her emotional video, the lady disclosed that she attended the same secondary school as Ochanya and that both of them were placed under the care of the same guardian. Lady shares experience with late Ochanya The TikTok user, identified as @fynene1, expressed deep pain as she recounted the ordeal that Ochanya went through while she was still alive. According to her, Ochanya was often punished by senior students for "bed-wetting", without anyone realising that the young girl was suffering abuse at the time. She remembered that Ochanya was quiet, timid and frequently ill, spending much of her time at the school’s sick bay. She explained that Ochanya joined the school when she was in SS2 and passed away when she herself was in SS3. The former schoolmate also mentioned that Mr Andrew Obuja, one of the key suspects later linked to the case, had two daughters in the same school, one of whom was reportedly Ochanya’s classmate. She noted that the girls often conversed closely and were seen visiting together, but she never suspected anything unusual until news of Ochanya’s death broke. According to her, both she and Ochanya were under the supervision of a woman who ran a small shop in the school. The guardian was responsible for their welfare and often made them share meals from one large plate. She recounted how the late Ochanya was often teased and nicknamed 'Obanje' by some of the seniors, a name she said came from her guardian’s son. However, despite the constant teasing and punishment, she alleged that the young girl couldn't bring herself to speak up about what she was enduring at the time. The lady further narrated that one day, during her SS3, she saw several cars parked around the school's sick bay, including the principal's, and that was the day she knew that the girl had been going through a lot. She lamented bitterly over the young girl's devastating experience and prayed that justice prevailed in the end. "Justice for Ochanya. She was my junior in secondary school. I don't even like watching her videos. We had the same guardian. I don’t have the platform I need for this story but Ochanya was my jnr in secondary school we had the same guardian," she said.
