The DIVA Foundation’s signature fundraising event, DIVAS Simply Singing! gala is a prestigious annual benefit concert that raises awareness and funds for programs that promote the prevention of HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening health conditions. The gala has a rich 35-year history, making it the longest-running consecutive HIV/AIDS and Health Awareness benefit concert in the United States. The 2025 gala is made possible by the generous support of presenting sponsor Gilead Sciences, a longtime partner and champion of The DIVA Foundation’s mission to uplift, educate, and empower. “We’re really excited to partner with Sheryl and the DIVA Foundation to celebrate the 35th anniversary of DIVAS Simply Singing. For over three decades, this gala has been a powerful platform for raising health awareness while honoring lives impacted by HIV. Sheryl’s ability to use storytelling and the arts to educate and uplift communities is incredible – and really resonates with Gilead’s mission to end the HIV epidemic for everyone, everywhere,” shared in a statement via email from Shreya Jani, Senior Vice-President of Public Affairs, Gilead Sciences. Jani continues, “For us, this partnership is about more than just science. We know innovation only matters if it reaches the people who need it most. That’s why we’re working together to explore what happens when science and art come together—connecting the history of HIV with the breakthroughs in treatment and prevention, and imagining a future where stigma is gone and access to care is the norm. This moment in the fight against HIV is pivotal - we’re at a point where we can start to envision a world where people live without fear of the virus. That’s the kind of impact we’re striving for—and it’s why this partnership means so much. For us, this partnership is about more than just science. We know innovation only matters if it reaches the people who need it most. That’s why we’re working together to explore what happens when science and art come together—connecting the history of HIV with the breakthroughs in treatment and prevention, and imagining a future where stigma is gone and access to care is the norm.” MORE FOR YOU Sheryl Lee Ralph, Debra Fraser-Howze and Deborah Telman at the 35th Anniversary Gala of DIVAS Simply Singing held at the Taglyan Complex on November 01, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Earl Gibson III/Deadline via Getty Images) Deadline via Getty Images Since its inception in 1990, The DIVA Foundation has raised over $5.5M from corporations and individuals to deliver community-based programs targeting the most at-risk for poor health outcomes, including people living with HIV/AIDS and those left even more vulnerable by comorbidities. “I never, ever imagined that I would be doing this 35 years. I honestly would have thought there was a cure. I would have thought that there was something else for us, that people's minds were more developed, in thinking about how they accept others who are not like them,” Ralph says to me via our Zoom interview. “Your health is your greatest wealth. And too many of us don't pay attention till it is gone. The longer you can stay healthy, the better you can survive the ups and downs of America, of life, and of your community. We need strong, healthy people to carry on.” Sheryl Lee Ralph, James Pickens and Gina Taylor-Pickens at the 35th Anniversary Gala of DIVAS Simply Singing held at the Taglyan Complex on November 01, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Earl Gibson III/Deadline via Getty Images) Deadline via Getty Images When it comes to hosting a massive gala in Hollywood, consistently, to promote health awareness, Ralph believes it’s essential to work with truly compassionate individuals. “Believe it or not, I always tell people when I'm asking them to invite people to the event. Invite singers. Please only invite people who have a good heart. Please only invite people who have something to give and are willing to share it. I have found in the past that if an artist's attitude is bigger than their hairstyle, we just don't have room for it,” she states. Ralph continues, “We stand as a beacon of hope. We stand, a basket of gratitude. You know, the reason we've been able to do this for 35 years, through all the ups and downs, is that we have been determined to be here. We have been chosen to tell people of their worthiness. We have been determined to shed light for others, to tell stories that were there before, that people tried to silence. I have never been dependent upon anything except the kindness of others. That is the only thing that has kept me moving forward. This gala represents love. We are a divinely inspired, victoriously aware Foundation. We are DIVA. We are audacious, we are awesome.” Ralph’s activism inspires not only people who are passionate about advocating for health autonomy and care but also encourages pivotal figures in Hollywood to get involved. “It’s important for Hollywood to show up and advocate because of the influence, because of the platform. And you can't be afraid of your platform, if you have it and you want to use it for the greater good, that’s great,” she says. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 40.8 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2024. DIVAS Simply Singing! aims to lower that number by emphasizing advocacy through artistic expression. Ralph is passionate about this cause due to her personal experience of losing most of her “Dreamgirls” creative cast to HIV/AIDS during the 1980s. “We lost 1/3 of our original creative company to aids on Dream Girls. And just like that, the world turned upside down, because you see, before HIV and AIDS, before fear, before stigma, before shame, before loss, there was life,” Ralph said to the audience during the gala. This year’s milestone event featured powerhouse performances by Emmy Award-winning actresses Jenifer Lewis and Devine, GRAMMY Award-winning artists Lalah Hathaway and Andra Day, GRAMMY-nominated country artist Mickey Guyton, legendary vocalist Freda Payne, and rising R&B artist India Shawn. This year’s distinguished honorees include Debra Fraser-Howze, honored with the Inaugural Visionary Award; Dr. Maya Green, honored with the Health Advocacy Award; Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., Living Legends Award; and Lula Washington, recognized with the Artistic Activism Award for her impact in dance and cultural expression. The foundation made sure to spotlight pioneering advocates in the fight against HIV/AIDS: Sherri Lewis, Rae Lewis Thornton, Cathay Elliot, and Ciara Owens. Additionally, one of the night's performers, James Pickens Jr., presented a $10,000 donation to the Diva Foundation. As one of the honorees of the evening, Dr. Maya Green, founder and Chief Health and Equity Officer of Onyx Medical Wellness, and HIV specialist, is passionate about community healing and HIV care. Green highlights the symbiotic relationship between healthcare and entertainment, noting that entertainers like Shirley and Ralph use their platforms to raise awareness and advocate for underserved communities. She emphasizes the importance of self-advocacy and community support, sharing personal experiences to illustrate the challenges and significance of embracing one's greatness and purpose. “ It's part of healing. Healing starts in the heart. Healing starts in the head. Ralph has a huge voice, and it's called to be that way; those things set the atmosphere for how we move as culture,” she says to me in a Zoom interview. “The DIVA Foundation can move masses nationwide and globally, to invest and set the tone for them so they invest in our communities, which are overlooked and underserved.” She appreciates how Ralph is utilizing her influence and platform to make a difference and bring change to communities that need support and care. “I appreciate Ralph and the DIVA Foundation for what they are doing to stand out. I also appreciate that they know how to stand in community and stand up. Because a lot of times this kind of work isn't elevated, and I'm thankful for that, especially at a time like this, when funding and access to resources are dramatically less than they were even last year. You know, giving us the opportunities to make those connections now so that we can ensure that no one has to experience living with HIV/AIDS, going without care,” Green states. Janice Tjen Claims Maiden WTA 250 Title at Chennai Open 2025

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis star Janice Tjen claimed the championship at the WTA 250 Chennai Open 2025 in India on Sunday, November 2, 2025. She secured her first WTA singles victory by defeating Australia's Kimberly Birrell, the seventh seed, with a decisive score of 6-4, 6-3.Tjen, the tournament's fourth seed, needed just two hours to complete the final. She recorded two aces and flawlessly converted all three break point opportunities she created during the match."In my opinion, I played very well here, improving in every round, and today I was able to play my best tennis," Tjen said, as reported by the WTA, reflecting on her consistent performance. On her path to claim her first WTA singles title, the Jakarta-born player demonstrated resilience early on, requiring two three-set matches, or 'rubber-set matches', in the first two rounds in Chennai. She then advanced smoothly to the semifinals after dominating Czech player Mia Pohnkov with a score of 6-3, 6-1. The quarterfinals, however, presented a tough challenge against Thailand's Lanlana Tararudee. The 23-year-old Tjen staged an impressive comeback from a 2-5 deficit in the decisive set to ultimately win the match in a tie-break.Prior to winning the WTA 250 title in Chennai, Tjen had successfully captured the WTA 125 Jinan in China in mid-October. However, that specific title is not recognized by the WTA as being at the 250 level, as the WTA 125 category is comparable to a Challenger event.Tjen also achieved a runner-up position in her debut performance at the WTA 250 Sao Paolo in Brazil in mid-September.Tjen's success also extends to doubles. She recently secured her first WTA doubles title at the WTA 250 Guangzhou in China last week, partnering with Poland's Katarzyna Piter. That win complements her previous WTA 125 Suzhou doubles title achieved with compatriot Aldila Sutjiadi.Janice Tjen and Aldila Sutjiadi have teamed up again at the Chennai Open. The second-seed Indonesian pair is now preparing to play the final match against the top-seeded Australian-Romanian duo, Monica Niculescu and Storm Hunter.Editor’s Choice: Indonesia's Janice Tjen Reaches Final of Chennai Open 2025 After Defeating ThailandClick here to get the latest news updates from Tempo on Google News

Humiliating moment Canadian hockey fans think Blue Jays won the World Series and celebrate mid-game

All of Canada was rooting for the Toronto Blue Jays. So, when the team seemed to have won the World Series, the nation erupted wherever they were - only to be brought crashing back down. Toronto began Game 7 of the World Series up 3-0 on the Los Angeles Dodgers, only to fall apart in the top of the ninth inning when closer Jeff Hoffman gave up a solo home run to Miguel Rojas which tied the game. Still, the Blue Jays still had the bottom of the inning to win the game in regulation and with runners on second and third, they had their best shot to do so. Daulton Varsho, the outfielder who struggled throughout this Series, smacked a ground ball to second baseman Miguel Rojas - who threw the ball to home plate as pinch-runner Isiah Kiner-Falefa slid into the bag. At the Rogers Centre, fans celebrated - believing that Kinfer-Falefa got home in time and that the Blue Jays had snapped their 32-year World Series drought. Across the country, in Edmonton, fans watching an Oilers hockey game believed the same thing. Cheers went up throughout Rogers Place in the middle of action against the Chicago Blackhawks. Only, the joy was short lived, as Sportsnet broadcaster Harnarayan Singh captured in real time: 'The Blue Jays have just won the World Series! Or no! They're calling him out at home!' As it turns out, the throw to home by Rojas reached the glove of catcher Will Smith milliseconds before Kiner-Falefa got his foot to the bag and the runner was called out. Following the game, images showed that Kiner-Falefa was deeply conservative in his base running - standing about two steps off third base and not taking a secondary lead. Had he done so, he would have beaten the throw home and the Blue Jays would have been victors. But instead, Kiner-Falefa said that Blue Jays third base coach Carlos Febles - who made multiple horrible decisions this Series to cost Toronto victories - told him to stay close to the bag. 'They told us to stay close to the base,' Kiner-Falefa told reporters. 'They don't want us to get doubled off in that situation with a hard line drive... It was obviously a tough play. They got it done. The lead is small. In that situation, you can't get doubled off. I got the best secondary I could from that spot and it didn't work out.' The Blue Jays didn't recover. Smith hit a solo home run in the top of the 11th inning and Toronto catcher Alejandro Kirk barreled up a broken-bat ground ball which turned into a double play for the Dodgers to become the first repeat World Series champions in 25 years. It's the sixth Game 7 defeat for Toronto sports teams in the past five years.

2025 College Football Bowl Eligibility Tracker After Week 10

CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS - OCTOBER 19: Head coach Bret Bielema of the Illinois Fighting Illini is seen following the game against the Michigan Wolverines at Memorial Stadium on October 19, 2024 in Champaign, Illinois. (Photo by Michael Hickey/Getty Images) Getty Images We’ve reached the final month of the college football season with plenty of bowl game spots available for the taking. We are four more weeks till the regular season comes to a close, and 51 programs have already punched their ticket to bowl eligibility. This is your guide to tracking which teams will reach the postseason through the end of the regular season. College Football Bowl Eligibility Criteria: The future of the College Football Playoff is in question but when it comes to this year’s postseason, here’s a quick overview. The final day of the 2025 regular season is on Nov. 29 with bowl games expected to be announced on Dec. 7. Bowl season begins Dec. 13 and ends Jan. 19. The postseason consists of 35 traditional bowl games, four CFP first round games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinal games and one national championship game. That adds to up to 46 matchups with 82 FBS programs set to play beyond conference championship weekend. To qualify for bowl eligibility, teams must win at least six games, and they can only count one win against FCS opponents. If there are too many bowl-eligible teams, some will be left out of postseason play. If there are not enough bowl-eligible teams, the first two spots would go to Delaware and Missouri State, which are transitioning from the FCS, assuming they satisfy the bowl-eligibility criteria. After that, it will come down to Academic Progress Rate scores for teams one win away from bowl eligibility, which is why in some years you see teams with a 5-7 record competing in bowl games. MORE FOR YOU Before the countdown to bowl season even began, one program was already eliminated. Akron was ruled ineligible for postseason play in May due to a failing Academic Progress Rate score during the 2023-24 season. Lorraine Kelly shares her thoughts after 'seismic' changes made to her ITV morning show

Lorraine Kelly has shared her thoughts about the "seismic" changes set to be made to her ITV daytime show, Lorraine, in the new year. First announced back in May, ITV confirmed that Lorraine will be shortened by 30 minutes and move to a "seasonal basis". The show will now air for 30 weeks of the year, while Good Morning Britain will fill the additional slot from 9 am to 10 am for the remaining 22 weeks. During the 30 weeks Lorraine is on air, the broadcaster will front the show every weekday, including Fridays – which are usually hosted by Christine Lampard and Ranvir Singh. The decision follows ITV's announcement of around 220 job cuts across its daytime division, affecting Loose Women, This Morning and Good Morning Britain. According to Deadline, the changes could see around half of the 450 employees working across ITV's daytime output facing redundancy. This news came as a shock to many Lorraine viewers, many of whom have been following the show since its inception in 2010. The programme even saw record-breaking viewership numbers in February, March and April of this year, with ITV declaring: "Lorraine reaches 1.1M people every day and 2.7M people every week." While the changes are disappointing for many within the industry, they are said to be aimed at ensuring more "streaming-friendly content, including drama and sport," according to Deadline. Lorraine Kelly shares her thoughts Speaking on BBC 4's Desert Island Discs with Lauren Laverne, Lorraine reflected on the shake-up to her long-running show, which she has presented since 2010. "I was disappointed, of course I was," she shared. "This is the world that we live in now. Things have to change, I mean, I've been through so many regime changes in my life. "For me, this is just another one, but it's seismic," she continued. "The thing that has upset me the most is the fact that we've got this great team, and obviously, that's not going to be in place next year because jobs will go. Hopefully, I'll be able to hang on to some of these amazing people – that's my aim. It's very, very sad. It really is." What's changing on Lorraine? From January 2026, Lorraine will be cut from an hour to 30 minutes. Good Morning Britain will then extend its runtime by half an hour to fill the gap, running from 6 am to 9.30 am every weekday. At the moment, Lorraine airs for almost the entire year, but under the new plan, the show will only broadcast for 30 weeks annually. During the 22 weeks it's off-air, Good Morning Britain will continue until 10 am. What's happening to the other ITV daytime shows? Like Lorraine, Loose Women will also undergo change. While it will remain in its current time slot – 12.30 pm to 1.30 pm – it will only air for 30 weeks of the year. This Morning, which is hosted by Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, will continue airing from 10 am to 12.30 pm on weekdays for the full year. Elsewhere, ITV's long-running soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale will see their combined airtime reduced by one hour each week. What has ITV said about the changes? When the changes were first announced, Kevin Lygo, managing director of ITV's media and entertainment division, told the BBC: "Daytime is a really important part of what we do, and these scheduling and production changes will enable us to continue to deliver a schedule providing viewers with the news, debate and discussion they love from the presenters they know and trust, as well as generating savings which will allow us to reinvest across the programme budget in other genres. "These changes also allow us to consolidate our news operations and expand our national, international and regional news output and to build upon our proud history of trusted journalism at a time when our viewers need accurate, unbiased news coverage more than ever."

Study: Genetic tweaks allowed early humans to walk on two legs

Two small changes in human DNA may have played a big role in helping our ancestors walk upright, researchers say. The study, recently published in the journal Nature, found that these tweaks changed how a key hip bone developed. This allowed early humans to stand, balance and walk on two legs instead of moving on all fours like other primates. One change caused the ilium -- the curved bone you feel when you put your hands on your hips -- to rotate 90 degrees. This shifted how muscles attached to the pelvis, transforming a structure once used for climbing into one built for upright walking. The other genetic change slowed down how the ilium hardened into bone, giving it more time to expand sideways and form a short, bowl-shaped pelvis. These changes were "essential for creating and shifting muscles that are usually on the back of the animal, pushing the animal forward, to now being on the sides, helping us stay upright as we walk," study co-author Terence Capellini, an evolutionary biologist at Harvard University, said. The researchers examined samples of developing pelvic tissue from humans, chimpanzees and mice, pairing microscopic samples with CT imaging. They found that in humans, pelvic cartilage grows sideways rather than vertically as it does in other primates, and that it hardens later, allowing the structure to widen as it forms. Further analysis revealed that the difference came from subtle changes in gene regulation -- the "on-off switches" that control how and when certain genes are active. In humans, cartilage-forming genes switched on in new regions, prompting horizontal growth, while bone-forming genes activated later, slowing the hardening process. Because primates share most of the same developmental genes, researchers believe these changes appeared early in human evolution, after our lineage split from chimpanzees. "What Terry and his lab's work has shown is that it's not just a rotation, it's a different way of growing," University of Missouri anthropologist Carol Ward, who was not involved in the study, told Science News. "One of the most significant things about this change is it shows how critical it was to establish the ability to stand on one foot at a time, which lets us walk on two feet," Ward said. Interestingly, this research didn't start as an evolutionary study. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, researchers originally set out to understand how the pelvis forms to improve treatments for hip disorders. "It was geared towards biomedical research," Capellini told Science News, "understanding how you build a pelvis and why it's different [from other primates and mice], and more importantly, why it leads to disease." What's more, the same evolutionary adaptations that enabled walking may also have made the human hip more prone to osteoarthritis, the researchers noted. And, Capellini added, those wider hips may have also created a roomier birth canal, making it easier for humans to give birth to larger-brained babies as evolution progressed. Mega strong opioid 'pyro' found in Glasgow involved in one in nine Scotland drug deaths

New statistics have revealed that a superstrong opioid with street name 'pyro', which has been found in Glasgow and across the country, is involved in one in nine drug deaths in Scotland. Pyro, the scientific name for which is etonitazene, part of a group of substances called nitazenes, can be 800 times more potent than morphine. It is manufactured in illegal labs before being used as a cutting agent in heroin, the Sunday Mail reports. Experts fear that pyro could be fuelling Scotland's recent spike in drug deaths, as 283 suspected fatalities occurred between June and August in figures 12 per cent higher than the same period last year. The substance was linked to 28 overdose deaths in the first three months of 2025, and 68 deaths between April and June, accounting for 11 per cent of total drug deaths for the latter three-month period. But experts say that figure is likely an underestimate because of how quickly nitazenes leave the body. And with the substance accounting for so many drug deaths all over the country, it's no surprise that heroin samples in Glasgow have tested positive for the toxic nitazenes, with Public Health Scotland sharing images of the contaminated drugs. Professor Andrew McAuley, a drugs expert at Glasgow Caledonian University, said Scotland tends to see sudden “waves” of nitazene-contaminated drugs rather than a constant supply. Most recently he pointed to an influx of contaminated “green heroin” around Easter that led to a spike in ambulance attendances and overdose deaths. The expert said: "This wave seemed to be a bit more -significant in terms of the numbers of areas involved. “It wasn’t just concentrated in a couple of areas, it was found in both the west coast and the east coast and it involved larger numbers. “Then it seeped away again, so it does come and go. But the worrying thing for me is that the two or three times we have seen it come in, it seems to escalate each time.” The synthetic opioid is similar to fentanyl, which has devastated the US, with the contaminated drugs often being hundreds of times stronger than heroin. Public Health Scotland’s Radar team said in its latest quarterly drugs report: “Detections of -nitazene-type opioids in deaths reached their highest level to date. In Q2 of 2025, detections sharply increased to 12 per cent (74 deaths). Etonitazene was the most common nitazene, detected in 68 deaths (11 per cent).” Sign up to our daily Glasgow Live newsletter here to receive news and features direct to your inbox Join Glasgow Live's WhatsApp community hereand get the latest news sent straight to your messages.

MAFS UK groom admits ‘my hands are tied’ as couple backed into corner

A Married at First Sight UK couple is set to receive brutal home truths in tonight's episode. Brighton-based groom Bailey, 36, married Liverpool bride Rebecca , 32, at the beginning of the experiment and they have since built a strong bond. But as the show nears its end, the pair has been forced to consider what their lives will look like in the real world. In scenes set to air on Sunday (November 2), the duo sit down with Bailey's sister to discuss their marriage so far. While the groom claims everything has been going well , he admits that long distance could be an issue. Bailey confesses: "Everything's great, but we live opposite sides of the b****y country." The sales manager has a three-year-old daughter named Bluebell, who he doesn't want to move away from. "I just wouldn't sacrifice any time with Blue," he tells his sister. However, Rebecca is also tied to her home because her friends, family and business are all based up north. She says: "I don't know if I could leave." While the couple seem hesitant to confront the issue of long distance, Bailey's sister offers them stern words of advice. "I don't think long distance is going to work that well," she starts. "I'd literally be so angry if you moved. And it's just too far so you can't just pop and see her [Bluebell]. "You need to know how it's gonna happen. How would it work? I don't want you to move up there, definitely not." The groom then agrees with his sibling, saying: "I can't move. My hands are like completely tied." Rebecca and Bailey have come a long way since their wedding day, where the bride voiced her doubts. As a self-proclaimed independent woman, Rebecca made it clear she was after an "alpha male" who takes charge. But she wasn't entirely convinced that Bailey fit the bill after walking down the aisle. However, the couple has slowly grown closer and are now one of the strongest pairs. But can they make long distance work? Married at First Sight UK continues on E4 tonight at 9pm

Customs, Netherlands Deepen Cooperation On Trade Facilitation, Compliance Mgt

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, has led a delegation from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to the Netherlands for a two-day bilateral working visit aimed at strengthening cooperation on trade facilitation, port efficiency, and border management between both countries. The visit, held between October 29 and 31, featured a series of high-level technical engagements, institutional briefings, and strategic meetings with Dutch authorities and Customs experts. The mission began at Laan op Zuid, the Dutch Customs Headquarters in Rotterdam, where the Nigerian delegation was received by senior officials of the Netherlands Customs Administration. During the visit, the delegation attended a presentation by the National Tariff Classification Team (TeamLTT) led by Ed Tulp, which focused on tariff and origin procedures within the Dutch system. This was followed by a detailed session on risk management, delivered by Dennis van der Wolk of the Customs National Tactical Centre (DLTC), highlighting the Netherlands’ model for risk profiling, cargo monitoring, and tactical decision-making in Customs operations. The NCS team also met with the Head of International Affairs at the Netherlands Customs to discuss enhanced inter-agency coordination, capacity-building exchange programmes, and digital trade processes. Speaking during the sessions, CGC Adeniyi commended the Dutch Customs’ structured approach to classification and risk management, describing the engagements as “particularly insightful in showing how systematic collaboration and data-driven analysis can enhance compliance and trade facilitation across borders.” He reaffirmed that the Nigeria Customs Service remains committed to adopting international best practices that balance enforcement with facilitation, ensuring legitimate trade thrives while revenue and security interests are safeguarded. The delegation later visited Schiphol Airport, where officials of Schiphol Cargo made a presentation on cargo clearance and classification systems at one of Europe’s busiest air freight hubs. The session provided firsthand insight into the Netherlands’ use of automation, pre-arrival processing, and coordinated border management in handling high-volume cargo. Deputy Comptroller-General Caroline Niagwan, who heads the Tariff and Trade Department, commended the Netherlands’ structured processes, noting that “the practical insights gained here will be instrumental in improving Nigeria’s own cargo handling systems, especially within our ongoing modernisation drive.” The engagement continued at the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hosted by Director-General of International Trade, Mr. Machiel Zweers, where both sides discussed frameworks for technical assistance and knowledge exchange. Zweers reaffirmed the Netherlands’ commitment to mutual learning, describing the visit as “a new chapter of institutional partnership built on trust and innovation.” The visit wrapped up with a high-level meeting at the Netherlands Ministry of Finance, where both parties reviewed key observations and explored mechanisms to formalise collaboration in areas such as tariff classification, risk management, trade facilitation, and gender equity. CGC Adeniyi described the meeting as “a constructive platform to consolidate lessons learned and translate them into practical frameworks that will strengthen Nigeria’s Customs modernisation programme and compliance culture.” The delegation also toured the Port of Rotterdam, where members were briefed on the port’s integrated logistics operations, advanced cargo-tracking systems, and intermodal transport models. The CGC described the tour as “an eye-opener on how synergy between Customs and port authorities can create an enabling environment for seamless trade and revenue optimisation.” In his closing remarks, CGC Adeniyi emphasised that the visit symbolised the Nigeria Customs Service’s strategic intent to benchmark global standards. “This engagement has provided us with a clearer picture of how modern Customs administrations can achieve efficiency through partnership, technology, and shared expertise,” he said. Similarly, DCG Niagwan noted that “the Netherlands model demonstrates that inclusivity, data intelligence, and inter-agency trust are indispensable elements of an effective Customs system.” The visit, anchored on cooperation, mutual respect, and institutional learning, reinforces the NCS’s commitment to transforming its operations in line with global best practices under the leadership of CGC Adewale Adeniyi.

Customs Boss, Adeniyi Emerges President, Nigeria Wrestling Federation

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, has emerged as the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) following an election held last Saturday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. According to a statement issued by the Customs Service spokesperson, Dr. Abdullahi Maiwada, the election was supervised by the National Sports Commission. The exercise attracted commendations from athletes and sports administrators nationwide, who described the outcome as both timely and strategic for the advancement of Nigerian sports. Before venturing into wrestling administration, Adeniyi had made notable contributions to the country’s sporting ecosystem. Under his leadership, the Customs Sports Unit evolved into one of Nigeria’s most formidable institutions in sports development, producing champions, Olympians, and role models across multiple disciplines. Speaking after his election, Adeniyi lauded the ongoing reforms in the nation’s sports sector and expressed optimism about their long-term impact. He underscored the importance of structure, transparency, and effective leadership in promoting sustainable progress for athletes and federations. “I’m beginning to see the dividends of the reforms that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is putting into the sports sector, placing the right people, the right processes, and the right systems to drive the electoral process. I am quite satisfied, and I feel this is an environment where I can work and thrive,” he stated. The Customs boss pledged to align the Federation’s vision with the federal government’s sports reform agenda, assuring that his leadership will prioritise structure, integrity, athlete development, and innovation in sports management. Stakeholders have expressed confidence that Adeniyi’s leadership will bring professionalism, accountability, and renewed energy to the Wrestling Federation. Many also believe his reputation for teamwork and inclusiveness will foster collaboration and lasting transformation within the wrestling community.

This Japanese restaurant chain’s triple-decker sushi bowls are a crazy feast for the eyes/stomach

Scaling the tower-don is a food experience you won’t soon forget. Looking at Japanese restaurant menus, you’ll see the suffix “don” come up a lot. It’s short for “donburi,” or rice bowl, and it’s usually used as a suffix. Gyudon, for example, is a beef (gyu) bowl, and katsudon is a rice bowl with a pork cutlet (katsu) on top. But it was a different kind of don that recently had us on way to a branch of restaurant chain Daikyo, as we were looking to try their tower-don. Daikyo isn’t a particularly big chain. It only has 11 branches. None of them are in Tokyo, but almost all of them are in Chiba Prefecture, which borders the capital to the east. The locations are mostly in the suburbs, which can be hard to navigate without a car, but checking the map we found that the Oyumino branch in Chiba City’s Midori Ward is pretty close to Kamatori Station, and we got there in about a five-minute walk from the south exit after getting off the train. From the exterior, Daikyo looks like any of a dozen other casual restaurant chains you’ll find by the side of the road in mid-size Japanese towns and suburbs. Its full name, Sushimendokoro Daikyo, lets you know its two specialties, sushi and noodles (men), and the menu has plenty of options for lovers of both. But what really grabs your attention as you peruse the menu is the tower-don. No, that’s a photo were the restaurant laid out all their different donburi just to show off how wide their selection is. The tower-don really is a gigantic three-tiered rice bowl, each level filled with different delicious ingredients. There are two different versions to choose from, a tempura tower-don and a kaisen (seafood) tower-don. It’s a tough decision, especially since they’re equally priced at 4,500 yen (US$30), but it really is hard to say no to sashimi in Japan, and that’s what we ultimately opted for. After putting in our order, we waited, wondering if the presentation really would be as insanely impactful as the menu photo. And then the tower-don turned out to look even crazier. Seeing the three bowls stacked atop each other, like some sort of food pagoda, is surreal. It almost feels like an AI-generated image that you’d get from a prompt of “big sushi bowls,” but this is a real thing that actually exists, and the cuts of fish were beautiful. Gazing in appreciative awe, our eyes migrated from the top bowl to the bottom, and then we noticed something oddly familiar. We knew we’d seen this kind of base somewhere before. It took us a moment, but then we remembered: it’s a stand commonly used for displaying models and anime figurines. Then we remembered that this stand has a feature, activated by pushing a button on the base, and when you do… …it rotates! This was a whole different sort of “revolving sushi” than the kind offered at conveyor belt sushi restaurants. It was honestly a little mesmerizing, and it also give us a preview of all the different types of fish we were about to enjoy. We figured trying to eat from the bowls as they were rotating would cause an awful mess, so after we’d recorded our videos we switched the base back off and unstacked the tower. The bottom tier is a chirashi sushi bowl, with chopped tuna, salmon, squid, and egg over vinegared sushi rice. The tower-don’s middle section is a negitoro bowl, with minced fatty tuna, green onion, and sushi rice. The top tier isn’t technically a donburi, as there’s no rice, but it is filled with slices of sashimi of various types. Looking at the disassembled tower-don, you’ll notice that the shape of the bowls is unorthodox. Because they need to be stacked on top of each other, the bowls aren’t totally hollow half-spheres. Instead, there’re sort of donut-shaped. Your knee-jerk reaction might be to see this as a way for the restaurant to trick you into thinking that the portions are more generous than they actually are. That’s not really Daikyo’s intent, though, because… …the center sections are filled with food too! For the chirashi bowl, there’s a compartment of shrimp, and the negitoro bowl has a raw egg yolk concealed inside its core. The sashimi bowl has its center bonus ingredients on open display: uni (sea urchin) and ikura (salmon roe). All this quantity would be pointless without quality, but we’re happy to report that the many, many ingredients of the tower-don were all fantastic. The sashimi bowl had slices of buri (yellowtail), salmon, squid, scallops, and shrimp, which were all great, and the otoro (extra fatty tuna) was on an even more amazingly delicious level. With the uni and ikura coming in their own little glass container, we decided to eat them with a spoon, which was decadently satisfying choice. Moving on to the chirashi bowl, the flavors were subtler but more refreshing, especially with the excellent ratio of vinegar to rice in the seasoning. The negitoro bowl was also everything you’d want it to be: rich and creamy without being oily. Adding the egg yolk is optional, but it played very nicely with the other flavors, and also created a gorgeous contrast of colors. 30 minutes after sitting down, we had several empty bowls, a full stomach, and a happy heart. As we mentioned above, in addition to the seafood tower-don we ordered, there’s also a tempura tower-don. However, their bottom and middle tiers are the same, with the difference coming at the top, where the tempura tower-don has a bowl of mixed tempura instead of assorted sashimi. And if, somehow, you find yourself looking at the tower-don and thinking “Yeah, that looks nice, but I’d still like something bigger”… …there’s also a seven-tier tower-don max, for 11,637 yen, but we think it’s going to be a while before we’re hungry enough to try it. Romance Abounds Amid Unexpected Time Travel In ‘A Newport Christmas’

The charitable Ella heads out on a boat in 1905 and ends up in 2025. Nick has to figure out how to get her back in time-and decide if their newfound love can stand the test of it. Photo: Ginna Claire Mason, Wes Brown Credit: ©2025 Hallmark Media/Photographer: Robert Clark Wes Brown feels it’s necessary to call out Ginna Clare Mason on her humility. The two star in Christmas in Newport which tells the story of Ella (Mason), a charitable and spirited Newport socialite in 1905 who upon learning her father intends for her to become engaged to a man she’s never met, she sets sail on a schooner and wistfully wishes for a different life. During her journey, she’s shocked to suddenly find Nick (Brown), a sailor and local Newport historian, aboard her schooner and accuses him of being a stowaway. But Nick insists he owns the boat and a standoff ensues. Once on dry land, Ella realizes that somehow, she’s traveled from 1905 to 2025. As she spends time there and gets a glimpse at what her future in 1905 appears to be, she becomes reluctant to return, especially since she and Nick have grown close and she now knows how true love feels. With regard to playing someone who travals between two different time periods, Mason says, “Oh, gosh, it was so much fun. I think Ella has this sort of grace and wonder that she carries into both centuries, and also this strength that’s really endearing.” She says that the ‘gorgeous sets and the incredible costumes’ helped her stay in character in both eras. “But I think getting to play with her mannerisms and her rhythm of speech was such an exciting challenge,” she adds, also saying that, “And to just get to play with my imagination — jumping forward 120 years, what would it be like for a person to experience our technological advances, our inflatable snowman, our paper cups and women in pants and having a lady boss? I think that was a really fun challenge.” MORE FOR YOU For his part, Brown says that watching Mason ‘transition from one time period to another was interesting to watch.’ “Getting to react off of what she was doing…. well, I knew she would bring it, and she brought it, and it made for some really great moments between us that I know you’re going to recognize in the film.” Along with a plethora of story elements — time travel, boats, and more — Mason says that there’s one more piece to movie that she thinks viewers will love. “There’s a song called ‘Timeless Christmas’ that is inspired by the plot of this film. Wes has previously recorded music, and I’m from Nashville. I recorded music, and it was really fun to take this love story and put it into a song.” She says that the song is ‘its own time capsule with a holiday spin to it.’ This is when Brown calls out Mason for being a bit too humble. “I love that she says, ‘I’m from Nashville and I put out a music.’ She’s skipping the fact that she was on Broadway for, like, half a decade.” Mason laughs a little as she says, “I guess that’s my early 20th century modesty coming out. You know, women didn’t boast about themselves then.” What’s unique about this film, points out Brown, is that, “It feels like old school filmmaking — with big sets, and a sweeping story and all of that. And, of course, it has, at its core, love.” Editorial StandardsReprints & Permissions

Strictly star Amy Dowden's 'life changed forever' after terrifying realisation in cancer battle

Amy Dowden ’s life changed forever in May 2023 when, aged just 32, she was diagnosed with breast cancer – a discovery made only a day before flying to the Maldives for her honeymoon with husband Benjamin Jones. The Strictly Come Dancing professional was left “traumatised and devastated” but chose to confront her fear head-on, documenting her treatment to raise awareness and encourage others to check themselves regularly. Her honesty and strength inspired millions, and she has since become one of the UK’s most recognisable advocates for early cancer detection. After celebrating the all-clear in February 2024 , Amy’s mission hasn’t slowed down. Determined to save more lives, she has now joined forces with fellow survivor Gemma Ainger to launch My Breast Friend –a brilliant, totally free app designed to make self-checks simple, stigma-free and routine. The app sends gentle monthly reminders and allows users to privately log any changes. “Checking your boobs, chest or pecs shouldn’t feel scary or clinical,” its creators say, aiming to normalise conversations around breast health. Amy, who knows firsthand how critical early detection can be, says she instantly wanted to get involved. “From my own diagnosis, I know the importance of early detection,” she explains. “It can quite simply save lives.” With one in seven women in the UK expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives, and nearly half admitting they don’t check regularly, My Breast Friend hopes to turn self-exams into an effortless habit - as normal as brushing your teeth in the morning. Opening up about the shock of her own breast cancer diagnosis, Amy - who also has Crohn's Disease - tells us: “I never, ever thought at 32 that I would be diagnosed with breast cancer. If I wasn’t checking myself, I wouldn’t be alive. "The woman I’m working with behind the My Breast Friend app, Gemma - had she been checking her chest, her outcome could have been very different.” The idea began after marketing professional Gemma was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at 42, after finding a lump, by chance, in the shower. With no symptoms or family history, she admitted she “rarely checked” herself and later reflected that regular self-exams might have caught the disease sooner. Determined to make a difference, Gemma channelled her experience into developing My Breast Friend, to help others detect cancer earlier. Following Amy’s own traumatic diagnosis, the Strictly pro - who was partnered with Tom Skinner this year , who was sadly the first celebrity to leave the series - is on a mission to spread awareness. “Since my own breast cancer diagnosis I want to do everything that I can to raise awareness and get the message out there to help others. I’m so proud to be on the other side of my diagnosis now. “I’m finally feeling like myself again. I’m finally Amy again. I’ve got my hair back, and my energy back, and I feel so happy in my life now. But the blow of having cancer and everything you go through throughout your diagnosis is something that never leaves you. “It has completely changed my life forever. But I want to use the pain that I went through to help others - to prevent them from having to go through the same.” The Strictly Come Dancing star admits that her life was turned completely upside down when she was diagnosed in May 2023, and the journey she went through has changed her forever. Amy explains: “I never thought cancer would happen to me. Cancer unfortunately doesn’t discriminate and sadly more and more people at such a young age are being diagnosed with breast cancer. “When you’re younger, unfortunately, the cancer tends to be a lot more aggressive. So if people from the ages of 18 up start checking themselves early, it will literally just become the norm. "There’s nothing to be scared of when checking. You need to get to know your body and your ‘normal’, and then when something doesn’t feel right you will know then to get it checked right away.” Sharing nuggets of advice and wisdom to anyone else who may be fighting a cancer diagnosis right now, Amy says: “Be kind to yourself. There are so many incredible healthcare professionals out there who will help you and there are so many different charities that are there for you to lean on. “Another important thing to remember is to not hold anything in. You really need to speak to your loved ones about how you’re feeling because you can’t hold in any worrying thoughts or feelings you have.” She adds emotionally: “I can remember when I was in hospital and one of the lovely nurses said to me, ‘Amy, don’t hold it all in.’ She reminded me that it was OK to feel how I was feeling and actually encouraged me to cry, to let it all out. “It was the best thing I could have done. When I cried, I released all these emotions that I was forcing down. I realised in those moments that I didn’t always have to be brave and that it was okay to break down and show some weakness. “Every step you take and every appointment you pass, you have to give yourself a pat on the back because you’ve got through it. Remember all of your little wins. The two sayings that always stuck in my head throughout it all were, ‘This too shall pass,’ and ‘Don’t get bitter, get better.’” Amy admits that sometimes the toll of sharing her cancer journey became heavy, and she wanted to hide away from everyone and everything. But she kept going, in the knowledge that by speaking out, she could potentially save another life. “There were times where I felt as though I just wanted to shut off from the world. I didn’t want to share updates or discuss what I was going through. But at the end of the day, if there’s one positive that would come from all of my oversharing was that hopefully even one person would be more inclined to check themselves. To me, it was just all about that. It was about saving lives. “I thought about mortality a lot. It’s scary. Your mind goes to the craziest of places when you’re in a dark place like that. After my initial diagnosis and when I was waiting to find out what the plan of action was, I thought the worst. The absolute worst. "When you’re in these moments, you’re so upset and you’re so emotional, your mind brings you to those awful places and it stirs up the most awful feelings inside of you. But I’m still here, despite it all.” Download My Breast Friend from all major app stores. For more info please visit https://mybreastfriend.health

Rising investments, AI adoption put India ahead of global peers in supply chain innovation: Capgemini

Where does India rank globally among Capgemini’s other markets? APAC is the fastest-growing market in terms of percentage, and the India business is the second-largest in our APAC region after Australia. Our India business encompasses both the work we do with local clients and some of our global customers based in India. We also do a lot of work on supply chain transformation. On the supply chain front, is this a recent focus or a long-standing part of the business? Supply chain transformation is not new to us. But in the last few years, there have been next-gen supply chain transformations, thanks to factors like rising prices of oil, energy, talent, or policy changes. Organisations are now focusing on optimising costs and improving agility. Supply chains typically have been more linear and siloed into pieces. Agility means becoming more digital, bringing in transparency and accuracy into the supply chain process. The second is diversifying the supplier base and expanding it, which brings in some complexity. The digital platform-based approach to supply chains is growing as companies seek more interconnected and transparent supplier networks. We also see local sourcing increasing. In our New-generation supply chain report, many executives said that in the next five years, there will be at least 5 per cent point increase in local sourcing -- globally and in India. Almost 74 per cent of people surveyed said the investments in the last two years have been tremendous. We see this trend continuing, with the investments in supply chain initiatives increasing in the next 12 to 18 months. We also see a significant increase in the usage of AI in the supply chain world. Almost 10 per cent of Indian organisations we surveyed said they’re already using agentic AI; this is the second largest in the world, while most other countries are still in lower single digits. Is supply chain transformation helping clients navigate macroeconomic challenges? Is it becoming a key growth driver for you? Geopolitics, tariffs, or rising labour costs contribute to inefficiencies in supply chains, prompting organisations to spend more on supply chain transformation initiatives. This also helps to make it smarter. With digital initiatives, we see more transparency, onboarding of suppliers to diversify, collaboration between suppliers, manufacturers and companies and accuracy in the forecasting process. With AI, we’re seeing real programmes now embedded in the daily operations of organisations, and this trend is only set to grow. Over the next few years, more digital twin initiatives and AI-driven analytics are expected to take shape. Our research also shows that India consistently ranks above the global average, whether in planned spending, AI adoption, or transparency, making this the right time to invest in the market. Many Indian companies are investing in transformation initiatives and modernising their infrastructure, moving to the cloud and enabling via AI automation. Why is it an exciting time to be in India, helping companies with automation? Does the government’s increased focus through initiatives like PLI and semiconductor programmes also make the market more appealing for Capgemini? We are more excited about the market because many policy changes have helped accelerate initiatives like those in the semiconductor space. Even with domestic companies, we see more initiatives, investments and diversification of businesses. Almost every sector has a supply chain factor at the nerve centre to make sure the right product reaches the right place. It needs to be efficient, agile and predictable. Capgemini has also invested in its intelligence supply chain operations, frameworks, tools and assets to accelerate the journey of digital transformation or the next-gen supply chain. Technology has advanced rapidly. What was once a conversation about GenAI a few years ago has now become reality, with numerous projects being implemented across organisations. Looking ahead, we expect to see more autonomous and self-healing supply chains powered by vast amounts of data. This surge in data-led initiatives and intelligence will further accelerate AI adoption and implementation, as robust data is vital for effective AI models.

Gut muscle rhythm may explain how blood vessels in brain work together

The human body is packed with natural rhythms, from your sleep-wake cycle to the steady pulsing of blood through the brain to heart rate and pulse. Now, scientists say the gut may hold the key to understanding how this complex coordination happens in the brain's blood vessels. Researchers at the University of California San Diego have discovered that the gut's rhythmic muscle movements could help explain how blood vessels in the brain expand and contract together. Their findings were published recently in the journal Physical Review Letters. When neurons in the brain are stimulated, tiny blood vessels called arterioles expand to deliver more oxygen and nutrients. These vessels pulse and are often in sync with one another. But for years, scientists have puzzled over how this synchronization occurs. The UC San Diego team turned to the digestive system for answers. They found that the intestines, which naturally contract in waves to move food through, rely on a pattern of synchronized oscillations that form a staircase effect. This same pattern, the researchers say, could also explain how brain blood vessels work together in harmony. "Coupled oscillators talk to each other and each section of the intestine is an oscillator that talks to the other sections near it," Massimo Vergassola, professor of physics at UC San Diego, said in a news release. "Normally, coupled oscillators are studied in a homogeneous setting, meaning all the oscillators are at more or less similar frequencies," he continued. "In our case, the oscillators were more varied, just as in the intestine and the brain." Using mathematics, the researchers showed how nearby oscillators -- whether in the gut or the brain - can lock onto each other's rhythm if their frequencies are similar. This creates step-like transitions, similar to the way food moves smoothly through the intestines. "The mathematics had been solved in an approximate way before now, but not in a way that gave you these breaks and what happens at the breaks. That's a critical discovery," David Kleinfeld, professor of physics and neurobiology at UC San Diego, said. The new findings could eventually help scientists better understand not only brain function but also digestive issues affecting the movement of food, liquids and waste through the gastrointestinal tract. "The brain is infinitely more complicated than the gut, but this is science at its best," Kleinfeld said. "You ask one question, it leads you somewhere else, you solve that problem, then return to your original question." More information Johns Hopkins Medicine has more on the brain-gut connection.
