Military Camouflage Continues To Evolve—There Is No Perfect Pattern

Since the start of the 21st century, the United States military has undergone several iterations to find something effective in multiple environments, only to return to the drawing board and devise something different. That might not seem like a huge deal, considering the vast sums the Pentagon spends annually, but the costs add up, especially for individual troops who often purchase additional uniforms beyond what they're issued. Last week, writing for Military.com, reporter Robert Billard suggested that even the United States Marine Corps' "MARPAT" camouflage uniform—a relatively successful pattern—had "arguably run its course." He argued that "in an era of tight budget and evolving threats, perhaps it is time to ditch the 'digi's' and return to something simple." For the U.S. Marines, it could mean a flat coyote brown or olive drab utility uniform. It would return to the types of training and combat uniforms worn in past wars. From Frogskin Pattern To MARPAT The United States military’s first foray into camouflage occurred in 1940, when the Army Corps of Engineers began experimenting with patterns designed to help soldiers blend in with their environment on the battlefield. With help from Norvell Gillespie, the horticulturist and gardening editor at Better Homes and Gardens magazine, the effort led to the development of the "frogskin" pattern. It featured rounded shapes and had two faces, one green for spring and summer and one brown for fall and early winter. MORE FOR YOU The U.S. Army only briefly issued camouflage uniforms to some soldiers during the Normandy campaign in northern France in the summer of 1940. There was a problem, however. As it wasn't widely used, it wasn't familiar to other U.S. and Allied personnel, a fact made worse because it closely resembled the camouflage in use with Nazi Germany's Waffen SS units that were also operating in the region. Not wanting the soldiers to be confused for the enemy, and one of the more notorious ones at that, the Army quickly retired camouflage from service in Europe. (Photo by Archive Photos/Getty Images). Getty Images However, on the other side of the world, the "frogskin" camouflage was widely issued to the U.S. Army personnel. There was still a serious problem. The Army opted to produce a single-piece jumpsuit, which was ill-suited to the hot jungle conditions of the Pacific. The United States Marine Corps opted for a two-piece utility suit instead, and that proved to be the first successful U.S. military camouflage uniform. It was effective in the Solomon Islands Campaign, notably on Bougainville with its dense jungle and vast foliage, but was less so during the sandy island of Tarawa, which had little vegetation other than palm trees. That should have served as a warning that camouflage could never be universally effective, even in particular theaters of operations. Yet, in the decades to come, the military would try anyway. During the Cold War, when it was believed that a future conflict would be in Europe against the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, the U.S. Army's Engineer Research & Development Laboratories attempted to develop an improved version of the frog pattern, which consisted of "leaves and twigs," with mixed results. The "Leaf" pattern was employed by reconnaissance and special operations forces in early 1967, but not in Europe. Instead, it was in Vietnam, a nation that also had a mix of geographic features. The ERDL pattern utilized four colors, printed in an interlocking pattern that included black "branches" along with a mix of mid-green "leaf" highlights and brown tones. A brown-dominant version was unofficially known as the "Highland" variant, while the green-dominant version was dubbed the "Lowland." The USMC adopted the latter and became standard issue in Vietnam. As with the frogskin pattern, ERDL was effective in some parts of the country and less so in others. In 1981, with the adoption of the Battle Dress Uniform, the ERDL pattern was refined to become the "woodland pattern," which was subsequently adopted by the U.S. military. It saw use in the 1983 U.S. invasion of Grenada, and again in the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama, where it served reasonably well. American Marines take a break during the US invasion of Grenada, 1983. The invasion was codenamed Operation Urgent Fury. They are wearing the woodland pattern BDU (Photo by Archive Photos/Getty Images) Getty Images In 2002, the Marine Corps sought to develop a uniform pattern distinct from that used by the U.S. Army, which led to the development of MARPAT. It quickly became known as "digital camouflage," as it employs small rectangular pixels of color. The USMC conducted rigorous field testing, which included various environments and both day and night operations, utilizing night vision and different optics. The results found it to be more effective than the woodland pattern. The Army Has Been Less Successful With Camouflage After the end of the Cold War, the United States military, notably the U.S. Army, found that it needed more than just a woodland pattern. It also required a desert pattern, and what it had wasn't really up to the task. The Desert Battle Dress Uniform was developed in 1977, utilizing a six-color scheme that became known as the "chocolate chip" pattern due to its resemblance to cookie dough. DBDU saw use in Operation Desert Storm in 1991 in Iraq, and then in Operation Restore Hope in Somalia in 1993. But as it was developed in the rocky desert of California, it didn't blend into the sandy desert of the Middle East and East Africa. U.S. Army soldiers in the Desert Battle Dress Uniform. It was nicknamed "chocolate chip" for looking like cookie dough (Photo by David Turnley/Corbis/VCG via Getty Images) Getty Images That led to the U.S. military taking a close look at desert soil samples in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and developing the Desert Camouflage Uniform just in time for 2001's Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and then 2003's Operation Iraqi Freedom. Also known as "coffee stain" due to its dark brown patterns over khaki, it was considered an improvement; however, what worked well in one region was less effective in another. DCU was also less effective in the urban fighting in Iraq. U.S. Navy Lt. Mike Runkle assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Mobile Unit Two, Detachment-18 (left) and U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Ben Walker (right) are each wearing the Desert Camouflage Uniform in Afghanistan (Photo by Mai/Getty Images) Getty Images That led to the development of the Universal Camouflage Pattern, which blended tan, gray and greens in what appeared to be pixels from an 1980s eight-byte video game. Yet, it was only universal in that it was ineffective in every environment. Writer Hope Hodge Seck, in her piece for Military.com, summed UCP camouflage, "It blended in well with grandma's couch, but had its drawbacks in the combat zone." That failure then led to the introduction of the Army's Operation Camouflage Pattern, which had actually been developed as part of the Objective Force Warrior program in 2002 but was passed over in favor of the UCP. The Army Combat Uniform (ACU) and the Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP) was widely disliked and proved ineffective in nearly every environment (Photo by Erik S. Lesser/Getty Images) Getty Images Billions Spent All of these changes have been costly, with the Government Accountability Office warning in a 2012 report that transitioning from UCP to OCP cost $4 billion, excluding the costs associated with testing. Texas National Guard personnel wearing the Operation Camouflage Pattern (Dominic Di Palermo/Chicago Tribune/Tribune News Service via Getty Images) And this brings us to what Robert Billard suggested in his piece for Military.com. It may be time to go back to a simple uniform that is a single color. "As threats evolve from dense jungles to urban sprawls, a versatile solid color is the smart move," Billard wrote. It should also be remembered that "khaki" was the original universally worn camouflage, first adopted by the British Army in India in the early 19th century. Khaki, the Persian word for "dust," proved more effective than the scarlet tunics worn throughout the British Empire. Sand colored uniforms became universal among other colonial powers, including the French, Germans and Italians, who soon adopted khaki uniforms for their troops in Africa. The American military wore khaki in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War, and it remained in use through the Cold War. British soldiers wearing khaki during the Boer War in South Africa circa 1900. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images) Getty Images America's adversaries, including the Japanese and Vietnamese, also wore khaki. History shows that a single color might not be such a bad idea. Even before khaki, British Rangers had worn solid green uniforms during the French and Indian Wars in the 18th century, and there is even speculation that the bandits on whom Robin Hood was based wore green clothing to better blend into their surroundings. It is time to reconsider a simple khaki, olive drab, or coyote brown uniform, as camouflage is never as universally accepted as its designer hopes it will be. The Science Behind College Students Storming Football Fields

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - SEPTEMBER 26: Virginia Cavaliers fans rush the field after the Cavaliers upset the Florida State Seminoles during a college football game between the Florida State Seminoles and the Virginia Cavaliers on September 26, 2025, at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, VA. (Photo by Lee Coleman/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Icon Sportswire via Getty Images As a meteorologist and professor at the University of Georgia, I am fascinated by storms and love college football. In this space, I usually write about the science of storms and other weather-climate phenomena. Occasionally, I foray into odd intersections of my weather expertise and other topics. In recent weeks, I have thought carefully about students “storming” the field after college football games. Here’s my attempt to put some “scientific” perspective on the seemingly growing trend. It is pretty clear to me that there is an upward trend in field storming after NCAA football games, but there is no obvious database to analyze. Using proxy and anecdotal evidence, I find evidence to support my hypothesis. In 2021 FiveThirtyEight conducted an analysis. Only 8 weeks into the 2021 season, fans had stormed the field 15 times, which was more than all of the occurrences in 2018 (10) and 2019 (14). According to GatorSports.com, there were 30 field storming events during the 2020 COVID season. Keep reading for more insight on how the COVID years likely explain the explosion in field storming after 2020. In 2016 Saturday Down South did an analysis of the last time every SEC team stormed the field. Alabama and Florida had no instances of field storming up to that point. Georgia had one in 2000 after a big win over Tennessee. Tennessee fans, itself, last stormed the field in 1998 though that has changed in recent years. Many of the other schools had not experienced “field storminess” in several years to over a decade. NASHVILLE, TN - OCTOBER 05: Vanderbilt Commodores fans march the goal posts around the field following a game between the Vanderbilt Commodores and Alabama Crimson Tide, October 5, 2024 at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Matthew Maxey/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Icon Sportswire via Getty Images This collection of data certainly suggests that before 2020, field storming was certainly a part of the college football culture but was more selectively used. In 2024 Ansley Graves opined in The Daily Beacon and asked whether storming the field has become too normalized. She framed her discussion in the history of students storming the field after big upsets, the realities of new financial penalties associated with doing so, and the indirect outcomes like the potential for injury or extra cleanup for staff. MORE FOR YOU The Psychology Behind It All There are factors that seem to explain the extreme “downburst” of field storms in recent years. David Whitley sums up some of the social science reasoning behind the trends. In his 2022 piece, he wrote, “As to why this rushing plague has descended upon our land, psychologists cite two probable causes. Social media, and the quest to post a video or photo amid the mayhem. And the pandemic, which bottled up passions that need releasing.” Let’s explore the COVID angle. Dr. Stephen P. Gonzalez is an expert in applied sport psychology and a sports administrator at Dartmouth. He told ESPN, “In a post-COVID year, I think that there’s just a lot of built-up or pent-up need for normalcy…. When athletics is a large part of a school’s identity and in some of these major conferences, it’s an opportunity for people to kind of feel like they’re a part of something that’s bigger than them.” I certainly understand his “release valve” hypothesis. A study at the University of California - Santa Barbara documented the impact of COVID restrictions on teen social well-being. A university press release stated, “One year after the end of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in California, adolescents reported an increase in feeling disconnected from their communities and negative thoughts about society in general.” Storm Cloud over Huntington Beach, Orange County, California, USA. (Photo by: Citizen of the Planet/UCG/Universal Images Group via Getty Images) UCG/Universal Images Group via Getty Images The Meteorological Analogies To Field Storming The other likely motivation is the rise of social media. If you watch recent field storming events, the students are certainly celebrating and enjoying themselves. There is something else that you will notice. Many of them are capturing every moment on their phones for various social media platforms. Social media has become the platform by which my kids’ generation documents their experiences, garner clout, and share moments in real-time. Heck, their videos can even land them on television or in a viral social media situation In moments that students storm the field, it is like a “downburst” of people on to the field. In meteorology, a rapid burst of cool air in a thunderstorm is called a downburst. There is another similarity to meteorology and field storming. Tornadoes, hurricanes, and other extreme weather events are now captured on cellphones. Though very dangerous weather situations, the initial instinct for many people today is to record the event and then consider safety options later. Storm chasing excursions are also on the rise. (Photos by Jeff Hutchens/Getty Images) Getty Images Many experts have grown concerned about safety aspects of field storming. When the University of Virginia upset my three-time alma mater Florida State University earlier this year, fans stormed the field. Nineteen people were directly or indirectly injured as a result of that particular “storm.” To protect fans and players, NCAA conferences have instituted various fine structures. Ansley Graves is keenly aware of that fact. She wrote, "Maybe just go out and celebrate with your friends, and not cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and cleanup fees.” SYRACUSE, NY - OCTOBER 13: Ervin Philips #3 of the Syracuse Orange celebrates the upset win over Clemson Tigers after fans storm the field at the Carrier Dome on October 13, 2017 in Syracuse, New York. Syracuse defeats Clemson 27-24. (Photo by Brett Carlsen/Getty Images) Getty Images Algorithms For Field Storming Appropriateness Many fans and observers have proposed algorithms or guidance for when field storming is appropriate. David Whitley argued, “It should be over a top-3 team you haven’t beaten in at least 10 years.” Ansley Graves suggested, “Rushing the field should only be done in huge upset situations, not against a team who falls under the top 15 placement statistics with your own." FiveThirtyEight developed a metric called the What’re You Doing (On That Field), or WYD. They stated, “This isn’t meant to measure the quality of the storm itself, but rather the context leading up to it.” Their metric includes: Inputs for both team and opponent rank in Associated Press poll. Kickoff time. Whether matchup was a rivalry. Whether matchup went to overtime or not. Whether there was a walk-off scoring instance, Whether the game was decided by one score, A higher WYD correlates with stronger justification for storming the field. They even did a WYD assessment for 2021 field storm events. While I appreciate the science of these algorithms, I think Ansley Graves is probably the most accurate with her assessment. She concluded, “Storming the field is something that will continue to be controversial within college football, and in reality, there is not a whole lot that can be done. Besides, you aren’t going to tell hundreds of thousands of college students not to go on the field after a huge win.” My hunch is that punitive approaches that impact the game, standings or playoff positioning would have more of an impact than fines, but that also seems excessive. Clemson fans have a tradition of storming the field for every home game. They found a way to make it work. As a professor and father of two current college students, let’s not be the “old fuddy-duddys.” Let’s find creative ways to allow the students to enjoy these moments but in a safe and responsible way. SIR is a trick to drop genuine voters from the rolls, says Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin

DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said on Sunday that conducting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls when the Assembly election was only a few months away would be a mere trick to delete the names of genuine voters. “It was done in Bihar, and the Election Commission seeks to do it in other States,” he said, chairing a multi-party meeting organised by the DMK and its allies in Chennai. A total of 40 parties took part at the meeting. Mr. Stalin said that voting is the body and soul of democracy, and that right is facing a threat. “It is the duty of political parties and democratic forces to stave off this danger. We are not against reforms, but the SIR, which deprived people of their voting rights in Bihar, is being introduced in many States, including Tamil Nadu. It is the need of the hour to express Tamil Nadu’s objections to the exercise,” he said. The Chief Minister said nobody denied that genuine electoral rolls were necessary for a free and fair election. “However, adequate time should be given for the exercise. It can be done only in an environment free from tension,” he said. ‘No provision’ Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani said there was no provision in the Constitution for conducting the SIR across a State or in several States. “There is no provision for a booth-level officer,” he said. TNCC president K. Selvaperunthagai said the Election Commission had included 90 lakh voters in the electoral rolls of Maharashtra in five months. “There are no proper addresses or fathers’ names [of these voters] in the rolls,” he said. MDMK general secretary Vaiko said it was unfortunate that the political party that was in power earlier (the AIADMK) and some others had stayed away from the meeting and expressed themselves in favour of the SIR. “If the SIR is allowed, over 75 lakh voters from other States will be voting in the election in Tamil Nadu. The BJP, which is targeting Tamil Nadu, is behind the SIR for its own advantage,” he said. CPI(M) State secretary P. Shanmugam said the SIR was a dangerous measure that would deny people their voting rights. “We need to create awareness among the people. We have been raising our voices against the anti-Tamil Nadu policies of the BJP government. We should at least organise a demonstration to express our objection to the SIR,” he said. ‘Against citizenship’ VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan said the SIR was not against the voting rights but against citizenship. “We need to understand the politics behind it. The objective of the BJP is not merely to deny voting rights; it is keen on creating the National Register of Citizens to fulfil its agenda, and the party is using the Election Commission for that purpose. We need to devise some bold political strategies,” he alleged.

Few rivalries in football carry the electricity of Chiefs-Bills. Kansas City heads to Orchard Park looking to reclaim its early-season dominance, while Buffalo shoots to extend its regular-season mastery over the Chiefs — winners of five of the last six non-playoff meetings. Mahomes still owns the postseason narrative, but Josh Allen enters with confidence after a blowout win and a clean week of football. The spread is narrow, the stakes are high as usual and neither team currently leads its respective division — an unfamiliar twist for two of the NFL’s modern titans. What our Post expert thinks about Chiefs vs. Bills Since 2020, no AFC rivalry has combined winning and volatility like this one — Kansas City (71 wins) and Buffalo (66) are the league’s top two in that span. Allen’s dual-threat ability looms large against a Chiefs defense that ranks third-worst in rushing yards allowed to quarterbacks. The Bills’ pass rush has generated relentless heat, while Buffalo’s depleted interior could open the door for Mahomes to exploit the seams with breakout star Rashee Rice. With Buffalo ranking 31st against the run and Kansas City struggling to keep its backfield healthy, this one may hinge less on balance — and more on which superstar QB can improvise best when the play breaks down. Atiku To Amupitan: Anambra Guber, Opportunity To Redeem INEC’s Image

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has urged the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, to use forthcoming Anambra State governorship election to demonstrate that the commission has turned a new leaf. Atiku, in a statement on Sunday, said the integrity of Nigeria’s elections must not be “sacrificed for the satisfaction of the ruling party.” The former Vice President also called on the electorate to vote for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Nwosu Chima John, and his running mate, Nwobu Geoffrey Ndubisi, describing them as leaders who can usher Anambra State into “a new era of prosperity and economic stability.” He cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against what he described as its “notorious practice of snatching and running away with the mandate of the people,” warning that any attempt to manipulate the process would further erode public trust in INEC. Atiku told Ndi Anambra that the November 8 governorship election offers them a unique opportunity to end what he called “the era of poor governance” under the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). “The election next weekend calls our consciousness to a moment when we must rally round the candidate of the African Democratic Congress,” he said. He further urged every registered voter in Anambra to not only turn out en masse on election day but also mobilise broad support for the ADC candidate. “Anambra is a place with so much good history about our great country. I believe that, yet again, Ndi Anambra will open the chapter of a new beginning in Nigeria, where the African Democratic Congress will bring lasting prosperity, peace, and stability to our nation,” Atiku stated.

SEC directs Local Self-Government dept. to transfer Koduvally municipal Secretary

The State Election Commission (SEC) has directed the Secretary of the Local Self-Government deaprtment (LSGD) to transfer and take disciplinary action against the Secretary of Koduvally Municipality over his continuous absence from his office, against the backdrop of the forthcoming local body polls. The order comes after various political parties complained about the Secretary to the Election Commission. However, the department is yet to issue a transfer order. The United Democratic Front has alleged that V.S. Manoj, the municipal Secretary, had deliberately removed several people from the electoral rolls due to political pressure. Besides, some documents in connection with the voters’ list had gone missing from the office. The Secretary has been absent for nearly two weeks and could not be contacted over phone. Municipal Chairman Vellara Abdu had complained to the District Collector, who recommended disciplinary action to the Commission, based on which the action has been recommended. The issue came to light when the final voters’ list of the municipality was published. Several people were excluded from the voters’ list for no apparent reason. Complaints regarding the voters’ list in local bodies need to be submitted to the Secretary. However, they could not contact the Secretary after the first few days and the issue has not been resolved. Hundreds of complaints reach the municipal office every day. The Collector had ordered an investigation into the issue based on which Deputy Director of LSGD Baiju Jose and Senior Superintendent U.K. Rajan had visited the municipal office on Saturday.

The (Im)Probability Of The Dodgers Repeating As World Series Champions

Los Angeles Dodgers World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto holds his trophy as teammates celebrate their win in Game 7 of baseball's World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, in Toronto. (AP Photo/Ashley Landis) Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved After an 11-inning Game 7 victory last night, the Los Angeles Dodgers became only the second team in MLB history to repeat as World Series Champions in the Wild Card Era (1995 - Present). Across the 31 completed seasons since Major League Baseball expanded its postseason format, there have been only three instances of a team successfully defending its title. The only other organization to accomplish that feat over the past three decades is the New York Yankees, who won three consecutive championships from 1998 to 2000. In an era defined by expanded playoffs, even the league’s most dominant teams face long odds of returning to the top. Dodgers’ Pre-Season World Series Expectations Los Angeles Dodgers Clayton Kershaw holds the trophy as the Dodgers celebrate their win in Game 7 of baseball's World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, in Toronto. (AP Photo/Ashley Landis) Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved Heading into the 2025 season the Dodgers opened as overwhelming favorites to claim the World Series again, priced at +275, which implied a 26.7% chance of winning. That was more than twice the odds of any other team this year. Even so, that figure also highlights the inherent difficulty of repeating: a 26.7% chance still means the most likely outcome was that they would not win. The Dodgers not only overcame the randomness of October baseball, but they also became the rare favorite to fulfill expectations in back-to-back years. To get a sense of how improbable winning two years in a row truly is, we can look back at the Dodgers’ odds to win the 2024 World Series, as well. Heading into the 2024 season, the Dodgers also opened as clear favorites to win the World Series, priced at +320, which implied a 23.8% chance of winning. Using these preseason figures, it’s possible to estimate the likelihood of a back-to-back championship by treating the two seasons as independent events. From a 2024 perspective, the chance of winning in both years would be the product of those probabilities: P(World Series 2024) × P(World Series 2025) = 0.238 × 0.267 = 0.0635 or just 6.35%. Even with favorable odds in consecutive years, this accomplishment is statistically unlikely. MORE FOR YOU Dodgers Overcoming A 3-2 World Series Deficit Even once the Dodgers made it back to the World Series, nothing was guaranteed. A dominant regular season and strong playoff run had them positioned to repeat, but the final hurdle proved anything but straightforward. After losing Game 5 to the Toronto Blue Jays, the Dodgers fell behind 3–2 in the series and faced elimination on the road. At that point, the Blue Jays were listed at –250 to win the series, implying a 70% probability of closing it out and securing their first championship since 1993. (AP Photo/Brynn Anderson) Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved To put that in perspective, although the Dodgers were favored in each of the final two games, their overall chance of winning the series from a 3–2 deficit was just 30%. A 30% chance of winning a World Series when down 3 games to 2 implies that the Dodgers had a roughly 54.8% chance of winning each of the last two games. A slight edge in two consecutive games doesn’t guarantee an outcome, however. That’s the paradox of postseason baseball: a team can be favored night to night and still be an underdog in the series. How the Dodgers Beat the World Series Odds Los Angeles Dodgers' Freddie Freeman (5) and his teammates celebrate their win in Game 7 of baseball's World Series as Toronto Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk, right, is out at first, Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, in Toronto. (AP Photo/Ashley Landis) Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved The Dodgers’ back-to-back championships represent more than just consecutive titles. They mark a rare statistical outlier in the sport. From the moment players reported in 2024, through two seasons of expectations, playoff volatility, and a World Series deficit, the numbers were never firmly in their favor. Even as preseason favorites both years, their implied odds of repeating were just 6.35%. Even as of a few short days ago, their implied probability of winning the World Series stood at just 30%. That context is what makes this run so remarkable. Editorial StandardsReprints & Permissions

NFL Players Driving Stadium Concession Menus And Buzz

Atlanta's Chris Lindstrom and Matthew Bergeron showing off the latest Levy creation, a peach cobbler parfait, part of a series of food items promoted by NFL players. Atlanta Falcons offensive linemen Chris Lindstrom and Matthew Bergeron were able to brush up on their acting skills while getting in quite a few bites out of one of Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s hottest new NFL foods. In a trend this year spearheaded by Levy, the concessionaire is partnering with NFL players across the league on specialty food items served during NFL games, working with the athletes to craft and promote the items. For the Falcons players, that means plenty of “jumbo dirty bird turkey legs” and now a new peach cobbler parfait with funnel fries. “I have had a blast,” Lindstrom tells me. “Getting to do it with Matt and chef Matt [Cooper] too and the staff was so awesome. Getting to be a part of what Levy does and seeing what goes into the stadium [operations] and put out a commercial, it has been a blast.” Bergeron tells me players usually don’t get to interact with folks off the field, so learning how the food is made and how hard staff works was a great experience. Plus, he didn’t mind the chance to eat . NFL players joined Matt Cooper, senior executive chef for Levy at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, for a commercial shoot. MORE FOR YOU “It was an easy thing to do and great food,” Bergeron says about shooting a spot for the campaign. “It was a fun day for us.” Along with the Falcons, Levy has partnered with Carolina Panthers’ wide receiver Xavier Legette on a Legette-themed “the masked bandit sandwich,” and with Detroit Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs for a “spin, dash smash(burger) combo.” “We have an incredible group of chefs who bring pride and energy into stadium kitchens across the country,” Andy Lansing, CEO of Levy, tells me. “Fans who are passionate about their favorite teams feel a special connection to the players, so we’re tapping into that bond to create new and customized food experiences that integrate fan-favorite athletes.” Carolina Panthers’ wide receiver Xavier Legette showing off his Legette-themed “the masked bandit sandwich.” Lansing says that players provide a fun and creative spark, whether with a personalized dish, co-starring in videos alongside a Levy chef or a combination of both. “When we can get fans celebrating a menu item before they even walk into the building,” Lansing says, “and then deliver with wonderful food, that’s an exciting one-two punch that we’ll look to continue in new ways.” The three campaigns launched new this season and the social posts alone have generated more than five million views and over 60,000 engagements. The specialty items have also been some of the strongest sellers, sometimes selling out before kickoff. Gibbs’ creation in Detroit is a mash up of his favorite foods: cheeseburgers, pizza, fries and Sour Patch Kids. The creation features a crispy smashed patty topped with mozzarella, pizza sauce and pepperoni on a grilled bun. It’s served with tater tot fries shaped like Sonic’s rings and Lions’ Honolulu Blue Sour Patch Kids. It has sold out every game and is one of the stadium’s top sellers. The Detroit Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs worked on a “spin, dash smash(burger) combo.” In Carolina, the Legette sandwich is slow-smoked brisket topped in Carolina coleslaw and barbecue sauce with melted cheddar cheese on a custom-baked “raccoon” roll. The players in Atlanta have now launched two items. It all started with the turkey leg, coated in a proprietary “dirty bird dust” seasoning, smoked and glazed with a peach habanero sauce, but just recently was joined by a peach cobbler parfait. The players participated in a commercial—Lindstrom says he came in on an empty stomach since he needed to sub in a fresh turkey leg for every take. “The leg is pretty awesome,” he says. “After we said we got to take two of these to go, please.” Bergeron says that between takes the athletes were able to talk to Cooper, senior executive chef for Levy at the venue, about what goes into the different food creations around the stadium and the focus on the fan experience. “He showed us other items and other ideas he works through,” Bergeron says. “The fact we were able to have that was an awesome experience. When you think about stadium food, you think about hot dogs and hamburgers, but we got to see the details and how creative chef Matt is.” MORE: Intuit Dome’s Season Two Food A Flavor Of California Now the two linemen are getting noticed for more than just their play on the field. “A lot of people come up to Chris and I—they just love the commercial,” Bergeron says, noting he saw the spot Gibbs did and felt the Falcons was funnier, giving them the upper hand. “I feel like a lot of people thought the final product was great, but I definitely have to work on my acting skills. I did an okay job for the first time, but it is fun to see personalities and seeing guys out of their comfort zone.” Lindstrom says the turkey legs have been a massive success in the stadium and he’s excited to see the program continue. For him, he’s just excited to be doing something fun—and completely new—with his friend. Plus, eating turkey legs is always a good time. Anambra: Prove to the world INEC has turned a new page, Atiku tells Amupitan

Former Vice president and African Democratic Congress presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, has tasked Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, to use Saturday governorship election in Anambra State to prove to the world that the electoral umpire has “turned a new page, and that the integrity of our election would not be sacrificed for the satisfaction of the ruling party.” Atiku gave the charge in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday. The former presidential candidate also appealed to the electorate in the southeast state to cast their ballots for the ADC candidate, “Nwosu Chima John and Nwobu Geoffrey Ndubisi to lead Anambra State to a new era of prosperity and economic stability.” The statement, personally signed by the former Vice president read: “The Anambra State governorship election next weekend is one in the number of off-cycle elections according to the country’s election timetable. “But, rather than being like any other, the election to elect the next governor of Anambra State on November 8 offers a unique opportunity to end the era of poor governance in the state in addition to ensuring that the ruling All Progressive Congress does not get the chance of practicing its notoriety of snatching and running away with the mandate of the people. “The election next weekend calls our consciousness to a moment when we must rally round the candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Nwosu Chima John and Nwobu Geoffrey Ndubisi to lead Anambra State to a new era of prosperity and economic stability. “The election is also an opportunity for the electoral umpire under the leadership of Prof Joash Amupitan, SAN to prove to the world that it has turned a new page, and that the integrity of our election would not be sacrificed for the satisfaction of the ruling party. “It is therefore important that every registered voter in Anambra not only determines to vote, but must mobilize huge support for the candidate of the ADC. “Anambra is a place with so much good history about our great country. I believe that yet again, Ndi Anambra will open the chapter of a new beginning in Nigeria where the African Democratic Congress (ADC) would bring lasting prosperity, peace and stability to our country.” READ MORE FROM: NIGERIAN TRIBUNE

Clayton Kershaw Didn't Realize the Dodgers Won the World Series After Double Play

Clayton Kershaw ended his illustrious 18-year career unaware that he'd just won the World Series again. At least at first. The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 in 11 innings in Game 7 on Saturday night to become the first team in a quarter century to win consecutive championships. But that was news to Kershaw initially. The three-time Cy Young Award winner was warming up in the bullpen and had lost track of the outs when Alejandro Kirk grounded into a game-ending double play with runners at the corners. "When he hit the double play, I thought the run scored and it was tied. I had no idea. I thought I had the next batter," Kershaw said, laughing. It was left to Dodgers bullpen catcher Josh Bard to let Kershaw know the game was over and they had won. "Bardo was there and he looked at me, he said, `We just won the World Series' and I was like, `Are you sure?’" The 37-year-old left-hander announced in September his plans to retire after this season. He said at his locker Saturday night that he couldn't have asked for anything more. Kershaw spent his entire career with the Dodgers and won three World Series rings. He became one of the greatest pitchers of his generation and one of Los Angeles’ most beloved athletes of the 21st century. "It's not a sad feeling. It really isn't," Kershaw said. "I mean, how cool is this? I will forever for the rest of my life be able to say we won Game 7 of the World Series in the last game I ever played. You can't script that. You can't write it up. Even if I was not throwing 88 (mph), I still would be done. It's just the perfect way to end it." The three-time Cy Young Award winner made a clutch appearance out of the bullpen in the 12th inning of Game 3, a 6-5 victory that stretched 18 tense innings. "You can't script that, either. I'm thankful to get out there and get that last out," he said. "That's so cool." In his prime from 2010-15, Kershaw led the National League in ERA five times, in strikeouts three times and wins twice. He has already earned a place alongside Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Don Newcombe and Fernando Valenzuela among the greatest pitchers to wear Dodger Blue. Kershaw had one of the best pitching seasons ever in 2014, when he finished 21-3 with a 1.77 ERA and 233 strikeouts to win both the Cy Young and Most Valuable Player awards in the NL. Kershaw built his reputation with a pitching style that relies on deception, movement and velocity changes. He has said he modeled his mechanics after his favorite childhood pitcher, Roger Clemens. The 11-time All-Star is tied with Zack Wheat and Bill Russell for the most years playing with the Dodgers. Kershaw also won World Series championships in 2020 and 2024. He has a career record of 222-96 and 15 shutouts, most among active major leaguers. He threw his only no-hitter in June 2014 against Colorado. His 2.54 ERA is the lowest of any pitcher in the live-ball era since 1920, and his winning percentage tops all pitchers with at least 200 victories since 1900. Kershaw said he's been offered a job by Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman. "He mentioned something where I can hang out," Kershaw said. "I don't know what that looks like, but this is a special organization and they don't need me to win World Series — that's obvious. But if there's anything that I can do in the future to be a part of it, I hope that's the case." The Associated Press contributed to this report. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
