Push for Ramsar site tag for wetlands in Assam wildlife sanctuary

Conservationists, wildlife officials, academics, and students have got together to push for the Ramsar site tag for two interconnected wetlands in central Assam’s Nagaon district. The Rowmari-Donduwa wetland complex is within the 70.13 sq. km Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a part of the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve. This complex has been recording more birds than the only two Ramsar sites in the northeast – Assam’s Deepor Beel and Manipur’s Loktak Lake. A Ramsar site is a wetland designated as one of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty signed in Ramsar, Iran in 1971. “Laokhowa and the adjoining Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuaries function as connectivity corridors for wild animals migrating between the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve and Orang National Park (Kaziranga-Orang landscape),” said Sonali Ghosh, the Field Director of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve. She said that civil society organisations and students from colleges in the vicinity have been researching and monitoring the wetland complex. She said that their efforts have yielded vital data on avian species and the floodplain-marsh ecosystem of the two wetlands, which cover an area of approximately 3 sq. km. An average of 120 species of resident and migratory birds, including globally threatened species such as the knob-billed duck, black-necked stork, and the ferruginous pochard, have been recorded in the wetland complex annually. According to the 6th Kaziranga Waterbird Census conducted a few months ago, 20,653 birds of 75 species were recorded at the Rowmari Beel, and 26,480 birds of 88 species were counted at Donduwa Beel. The combined total exceeds the counts at Deepor Beel and Loktak Lake, officials said. “The outstanding avian assemblage at the Rowmari-Donduwa complex, coupled with its rich habitat diversity and ecological connectivity, makes the wetlands an ideal candidate for designation under the Ramsar Convention,” said Smarajit Ojah, the officer on Special Duty for Assam’s Directorate of Higher Education, after a conservation workshop organised in Nagaon recently. The workshop, organised by the Centre for Sustainable Development, Nowgong Girls’ College, and the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve, focused on strategies to conserve the Laokhowa wetlands. Dilwar Hussain of the Laokhowa-Burhachapori Wildlife Conservation Society cited ecological vulnerability and the need for habitat restoration as the reasons why the Rowmari-Donduwa complex deserves to be a Ramsar site. “Assam has more than 3,000 wetlands, but none has earned the Ramsar site tag since Deepor Beel in 2002,” he said. India hosts 93 Ramsar Sites spanning 13.6 lakh hectares, making it one of the leading Asian countries in wetland conservation. These sites encompass diverse ecosystems that support rich biodiversity and provide crucial ecosystem services such as flood control, groundwater recharge, and wildlife habitat protection. Tamil Nadu leads all Indian states with 20 Ramsar sites, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 10. Assam Forest Department officials stated that a proposal has been submitted to pursue the elevation of the Rowmari-Donduwa wetland complex, once threatened by encroachment and illegal fishing, to a Ramsar Site.

Prince William and Princess Kate's temporary neighbour as they move into 'forever home' with 3 kids

The Prince and Princess of Wales have moved into what has been dubbed their 'forever home' at Forest Lodge, HELLO! was able to confirm on 1 November. Prince William and Kate, both 43, upped sticks with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, during their half term from Lambrook School after the couple reportedly set themselves the goal of moving in by 5 November. "The Prince and Princess of Wales clearly love living in Windsor, the children are settled at Lambrook School nearby, and they will still be close to Windsor Castle for royal functions and engagements," Danielle Stacey, HELLO!'s Online Royal Correspondent, said previously of the Wales family's move. "Upsizing to Forest Lodge allows the family more space and has already been viewed as their 'forever home,' rather than having the children growing up within the walls of a palace." William and Kate's neighbour However, having moved to the eight-bedroom Forest Lodge, William and Kate now have a new neighbour. Their new pad, which is situated on the Windsor Home Park estate, is just two miles from Royal Lodge, the current residence of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor (formerly Prince Andrew, Duke of York), than their previous home at Adelaide Cottage (where they lived between 2022 and the recent move) was. However, Prince William's uncle won't be his neighbour for much longer as the King's brother, 65, is set to move out of Royal Lodge after he was stripped of his titles and honours by Charles amid renewed scrutiny over his friendship with the late convicted paedophile, Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew Mountbatten Windsor to vacate Royal Lodge A statement issued on 30 October read: "His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew. Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor." It continued: "His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease, and he will move to alternative private accommodation. These censures are deemed necessary notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him." HELLO! understands that Andrew will move to new lodgings in Sandringham, Norfolk. William and Kate's forever home gets a glow-up Long before the royal couple's move, in 2001 to be exact, Forest Lodge underwent a series of renovations. The residence underwent a glow-up to the tune of £1.5 million ($2 million) to retain period details, including the original stonework, elaborate plaster cornices and ceiling decoration, marble fireplaces, Venetian windows and a half-barrel vaulted hallway ceiling. More recently, planning applications submitted to the local council in June 2025 sought consent for minor and internal and external alterations. It has been reported that the future king has paid for the property and all new renovations himself.

Travelers To Tokyo Are Fighting Jet Lag And Stress. Here’s What They’ll Find.

The leafy Westin Yokohama lobby embraces Japan's wellness culture. Aren Elliott No city in the world stresses you out quite like Tokyo. With its narrow streets, densely packed subways and frenetic pace, it's no wonder the Japanese capital also has a famous wellness culture to treat the inevitable anxiety. Tokyo's hotels and spas are answering the call with new products and treatments ranging from traditional massages to forest bathing. Travelers to Tokyo are also escaping the city to the tranquility of places like Yokohama, a nearby port city. "In today’s fast-paced and often overwhelming world, people are looking for meaningful ways to escape daily stress and prioritize their well-being," says Soo Yoon, the hotel manager at The Westin Yokohama. "With constant digital connectivity, demanding work environments, and societal pressures, the need to disconnect and restore inner balance has never been greater." The Westin checks a lot of boxes when it comes to wellness. It's the first Westin property in Japan to feature the chain's Heavenly Bed 2.0, which is designed to offer a better sleep experience. It's also the first Westin in the country to have the chain's new Heavenly Spa. "Everything we're trying to do here is related to wellness," Yoon explained. Why is Tokyo known for wellness? Tokyo is home to 37.8 million people, making it the most populous metropolitan area in the world. It has a well-deserved reputation for having an almost unstoppable pace. Tokyo's underground passageways are teeming with continuous crowds. Life moves quickly in the Japanese capital, and it's easy to get stressed out, even if you're just visiting. But for visitors, there are two major wellness challenges in Tokyo: It's not just an anxiety and claustrophobia-inducing place, but also a destination where you'll get slammed with jet lag if you're flying in from the United States or Europe. So it should come as no surprise that Tokyo's wellness scene is one of the most sophisticated and creative in the world. In a city that's wound so tightly, people will try almost anything to relax. Yoon says one of the best ways to deal with the stress is to get out of town. Yokohama, just a half-hour by train from Tokyo, offers a little more room — wider sidewalks, open spaces, lush greenery, and more affordable hotel rates compared to the capital city. "A significant number of visitors are locals from Tokyo who come here on the weekend for a staycation," she noted. She says travelers to Tokyo have become more discerning when it comes to wellness. They're not just looking for a spa or a healthy meal. They want full wellness integration, from sleep to exercise. They're also looking for something new. Arvind Rongala, the CEO of a corporate training company, often travels to Tokyo. After a marathon flight from the United States, arriving in Japan is a double-whammy of stress and jet lag. So on his last visit, he headed to Yoyogi Park, one of the largest green spaces in the city, for a relatively new wellness practice called shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing. It's a Japanese practice of spending time in nature to connect with the environment. "A guided session truly helped reset my body clock," he says. "There was just silence and pure air. Compared to melatonin pills, it was more effective." Massage beds at the Westin Yokohama. Aren Elliott What kind of wellness innovations are happening in Tokyo? Like Tokyo itself, the number of wellness offerings is diverse. Sleep upgrades Many hotels in Tokyo emphasize a better sleep experience. For example, luxury ryokans like Hoshinoya offer specialized programs, including rooftop onsens (baths) with natural minerals and deep breathing exercises designed to improve sleep quality. Yotel Tokyo Ginza has introduced technologies and supplements like FlyKitt Rescue to address jet lag. Even capsule hotels are being reimagined as "sleep cocoons," offering soundproofing and darkness. Traditional healing practices Beyond onsens, traditional rituals continue to offer wellness benefits. For example, the jibarai purification ritual at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura, just outside Tokyo, is sought for its healing properties. Jessica Gury visited the historical shrine recently. "It was a peaceful, mindful moment that blended spirituality and well-being in a very accessible way," says Gury, who publishes a recipe website. Massage innovations Some hotels are moving beyond traditional Swedish massages. Conrad Tokyo's Mizuki Spa offers a foot treatment, followed by a traditional hinoki (Japanese cypress) bath experience. It's designed to bring the body into balance using bamboo sticks. Yoon, the Westin's manager, says the Heavenly Spa in Yokohama has been busy developing new treatments that it plans to roll out soon. The entrance of the Yotel Ginza. Aren Elliott Wellness in Tokyo is affordable — or free One common misconception is that a wellness experience is a luxury. But some Tokyo hotels are fighting that perception, too. For example, at Yotel's new flagship hotel in Ginza, there's an emphasis on budget-friendly wellness and recovery. Yotel's modest rooms have what it calls SmartBeds designed for an upgraded sleep experience, as well as rain showers stocked with Urban Jungle soaps and amenities. These include a skin recovery kit with the Dust It Off exfoliator and Plump Fiction serum. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows provide natural light so you can quickly recover from jet lag after a long flight. But other wellness offerings in Tokyo are completely free. A walk among the trees in Yoyogi Park or a visit to a nearby shrine or temple doesn't cost a thing, and it can enhance your wellness in a hectic place like Tokyo. What's the future of wellness in Tokyo? Yoon says when it comes to wellness, the Tokyo metropolitan area is on the verge of an exciting era of innovation. "Everyone wants to know how they can improve their lifestyle," she says. Yoon has noticed that other hotels are also taking wellness more seriously. To her, wellness is not one product but many, starting with the decor and the water fountain in the lobby, to the signature White Tea scent in the spa, the lavender in the rooms, and the healthy menus. It all adds up. And she's seen more hotels in Tokyo embrace that holistic sense of wellness to help guests de-stress and recover from jet lag. The ongoing development of new treatments, the integration of technology, and a deeper understanding of individual needs suggest that the landscape will continue to evolve. And maybe they will make Tokyo a little less stressful for visitors, too. Editorial StandardsReprints & Permissions

"I used to pray for times like this", "Thank you Pep" - Fans react as Manchester City star included in XI to face Bournemouth

Manchester City fans are delighted with manager Pep Guardiola’s decision to name Rayan Cherki as a starter for their Premier League clash with Bournemouth. The two sides are set to face off at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, November 2.Guardiola made eight changes to his Manchester City side that defeated Swansea City 3-1 in their last outing, with only Cherki, Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku retaining their spots for the clash against the Cherries. Cherki’s inclusion will mark his second Premier League start for City this season, with his debut start coming against Tottenham Hotspur in August. He was a substitute in City’s previous two Premier League matches and sat out all the club’s matches in September due to a thigh injury. The lineup for City’s game with Bournemouth has been released, and Cherki was deployed as a wide winger in Guardiola’s 4-2-3-1 setup.Several Manchester City supporters were happy to see the French midfielder named as a starter, with one writing:“CHERKI START AGAIN, I USED TO PRAY FOR TIMES LIKE THIS 😭😭😭😭😭.”Cherkira Cherkira @EchemessiEraLINK@ManCity @etihad CHERKI START AGAIN, I USED TO PRAY FOR TIMES LIKE THIS 😭😭😭😭😭Another tweeted:“Cherki starts. The duo enjoys playing in an advanced role with freedom to roam and create. However, injuries have curtailed the opportunity for them to play together.Speaking in the pre-match press conference of their match against Bournemouth, Guardiola was asked if Cherki and Foden could play together, to which he said:“Of course, it’s a real option during the season to play them together (Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden), like Omar and Erling. As much as it’s good to have an alternative, you have to realise what you need to play in the Premier League. Some opponents and their physicality, especially the first half against Villa, we saw it perfectly.“We weren’t solid enough to sustain it, they will learn, the effort from Phil and Rayan. I’m not going to ask the players to not play a [certain] way, but there’s a minimum to sustain the team otherwise you create problems. When we have a lot of players who need to be creative, I think I said after Villa, this is the challenge we have to find ourselves. We will find it.”Interestingly, Guardiola has test-run the idea, including both players in his starting lineup for their match against Bournemouth.

Woman Maoist surrenders in Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat, first since State’s new rehabilitation policy

A 23-year-old woman Maoist has surrendered in Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat district, the first such case in the State since the introduction of its new rehabilitation policy launched in August 2023, officers said. Sunita, a resident of Bhairamgarh tehsil of Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district and a member of the GRB (Gondia, Rajanandgaon Balaghat) division of the Maoists, surrendered at the Chauriya camp of Madhya Pradesh’s anti-naxal Hawk Force on Saturday (November 1, 2025) night. The GRB division is a part of the MMC (Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh) zone. Hawk Force Commandant Shiyaz K.M. told The Hindu that Ms. Sunita had arrived at the camp without any arms and expressed her wish to surrender. “Today, she took a team to her hideout deep into the forest to help us recover her arms and ammunition,” Mr. Shiyaz said, adding that an INSAS rifle, three magazines, and a UBGL shell were recovered from the hideout. Maoist leader’s bodyguard Mr. Shiyaz said that Ms. Sunita carried a reward of ₹14 lakh for her capture, including ₹6 lakh in Maharashtra and ₹3 lakh in Chhattisgarh. She was a bodyguard to senior Maoist leader and Central Committee Member (CCM) Ramder. “She was an ACM (Area Committee Member) and a crucial part of Ramder’s team. As per our information, Ramder along with more than 10 Maoists entered Balaghat in February this year and have been hiding here ever since,” the officer said, adding that the Hawk Force hopes for more Maoists to follow suit in the region. Another senior officer of the Hawk Force said that Ms. Sunita had separated from her group a couple of days ago and hid in the forest before arriving at Chauriya camp to surrender. “We are interrogating her to get information on her group members and if more people want to lay down their arms,” the officer said, requesting anonymity. New rehab pathways Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said that the surrender was a result of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s “stern warning” to the Maoists as well as recent actions by the M.P. police. “This is the first surrender of any Naxalite under the Madhya Pradesh Surrender, Rehabilitation cum Relief Policy, 2023. This is also the first time since 1992 that a Naxalite belonging to another State has surrendered before the Madhya Pradesh government. In this year, we have eliminated 10 Naxalites carrying a cumulative reward of more than ₹1.5 crore,” Mr. Yadav said in a video statement. The Chief Minister added said that the State Government has opened rehabilitation pathways for Maoists who are willing to surrender. “They are either being eliminated or they are surrendering. Only a handful of Naxalites are left now and we hope that our strict action will have an impact on them too very soon,” he said.

Political violence kills almost 300 since Hasina's fall: rights group

Nearly 300 people have been killed in political violence in Bangladesh in the year since student-led protests toppled autocratic former leader Sheikh Hasina, the country's main human rights group said on Sunday (November 2, 2025). A report by Odhikar, a Dhaka-based rights organisation, said at least 281 people had been killed in violence involving political parties from August 2024, when Ms. Hasina's rule ended and she fled to India, to September 2025. On top of those, there were another 40 victims of extrajudicial killings who had been suspected of crimes, while another 153 were lynched, the quarterly report released last week said. Odhikar director ASM Nasiruddin Elan said adherence to human rights had improved since the fall of Ms. Hasina's government but law enforcement agencies were still not being held accountable. "Yes, we don't see the frequent extrajudicial killings or enforced disappearances that we witnessed during the Hasina era, but deaths in custody, bribery, and harassment of victims are still ongoing," Mr. Elan told AFP. He said that "innocent people fall prey to atrocities" for their alleged involvement with the Awami League, Ms. Hasina's political party that is now banned. Ms. Hasina's 15-year rule saw widespread human rights abuses, including the mass detention and extrajudicial killing of her political opponents. The Odhikar report also said many people had fallen victim to extortion by political parties, regardless of their financial or social standing, in the year since Hasina's fall. Those included the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, seen as the frontrunner in elections slated for February 2026, and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which was credited with starting the protests that toppled Ms. Hasina. Jamaat-e-Islami, Muslim-majority Bangladesh's largest Islamist party, was also included in reports of extortion, the report said. Odhikar also said mob attacks had been relatively frequent during the period, mainly because of inefficient policing. "Police have been used to achieve party interests and were given impunity, which eventually led them to kill and torture activists affiliated with the opposition," the report said. It said "the police largely became dysfunctional and lost their morale", after Ms. Hasina fell. Bangladesh's interim government nor any of the political parties have responded yet to Odhikar's report.

House Dem leader rails that Mamdani isn’t future of party days after endorsing him

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries smacked down the notion that socialist mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani is the future of the Democratic Party, but gave a jumbled rationale for why. “No, I think the future of the Democratic Party is going to fall, as far as we’re concerned, relative to the House Democratic Caucus and members who are doing great work all across the country,” Jeffries (D-NY) told CNN’s “State of the Union.” Jeffries had begrudgingly endorsed Mamdani late last month, after dragging his feet since June on whom he would back in New York City’s mayoral race. The Brooklyn Democrat commended Mamdani for being “relentlessly focused on addressing the affordability crisis” while acknowledging “there will be areas of agreement and areas of principled disagreement.” Other bigwig Democrats have refrained from endorsing Mamdani, such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and former President Barack Obama — who reportedly praised him in a recent phone call. Several New York Democratic Reps, such as Tom Suozzi, Dan Goldman, and Laura Gillen, have also not given Mamdani their official stamp of approval. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) endorsed Mamdani, but he has so far refrained from returning the favor ahead of her 2026 re-election bid. Republicans have already begun taking Democrats to task over Mamdani, tying them to his far-left agenda. But Jeffries downplayed concerns that a Mamdani victory could pose a significant liability for his party. “No, the lightning rod in terms of what’s going to impact the ability of either side to win control of the House or hold control of the House in 2026 is going to be the failure of Republicans to actually deliver on the promises that they have made and to actively make life worse for everyday Americans,” he said.. Mamdani is the clear front-runner heading into the Tuesday election, with a lead in every credible poll and a 14.5-percentage point edge in the latest RealClearPolitics polling aggregate. The self-described democratic socialist has previously trashed Jeffries. Jeffries also skirted responsibility for the government shutdown, despite Democrats blocking a GOP-backed “clean” spending patch to reopen the government from passing the Senate. “Well, we’re continuing to make life better for the American people,” he argued. “We want to reopen the government. We want to enact the bipartisan spending agreement that actually makes life better for everyday Americans.” Democrats have demanded that Republicans extend the enhanced Obamacare subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of the year and reverse their reforms to Medicaid in order to reopen the government. When pressed about whether Democrats were making a deliberate choice to shut down the government in an effort to extract concessions from Republicans, Jeffries rejected the premise. “No, what I acknowledge is that we’re asking Republicans to sit down,” he said, “in order to find a bipartisan path toward enacting a spending agreement that actually makes life better for the American people.”

‘SNL’ star Michael Che savagely roasts ‘Prince’ Andrew losing his royal titles on ‘Weekend Update’

“Saturday Night Live” is poking fun at the man formerly known as Prince Andrew. “SNL” star Michael Che joked about how King Charles relieved Andrew, 65, of his royal titles during the sketch comedy show’s popular “Weekend Update” segment on Nov. 1. “Prince Andrew has been stripped of his royal title of ‘Prince’ due to his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein,” Che, 42, quipped. “And Andrew says he can only become a prince again if he gets a kiss from a young princess.” King Charles, 76, officially started the process to remove Andrew’s titles and ordered him to vacate Royal Lodge on Thursday, Oct. 30. The surprising decision was reportedly made due to Andrew’s close association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as well as the ongoing controversy surrounding his ties to the scandal. Andrew, meanwhile, had announced that he would no longer use his Duke of York title shortly before the release of accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s posthumous memoir last month. Giuffre, who died by suicide at the age of 41 in April, had long alleged that Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell trafficked her to Andrew when she was only 17 years old. “His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew,” Buckingham Palace’s statement began. “Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.” “His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence,” the Palace continued. “Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation.” Although the Palace acknowledged that Andrew denies any wrongdoing in connection with the Epstein scandal, it added that King Charles and Queen Camilla “wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.” But this wouldn’t be the first time “SNL” ridiculed the former Duke of York for his royal woes. Back in 2022, when Giuffre was suing Andrew for alleged sexual abuse, Che’s “Weekend Update” co-anchor Colin Jost joked about the prince being stripped of his royal duties by Queen Elizabeth. “It’s an unprecedented case of an adult stripping Prince Andrew,” Jost, 43, quipped at the time. After losing his royal titles and being ordered to vacate Royal Lodge, Andrew is said to be relocating to a property on the Sandringham Estate. The disgraced former duke will reportedly have any future accommodations privately funded by King Charles. “I think it will be pretty well a living hell for him, given his particular fondness for titles and his entitled attitude,” royal author Richard Fitzwilliams said regarding how Andrew might handle the matter. “One of the troubles with him is that he has proven to be so greedy,” Fitzwilliams added. “People see him as entitled, greedy and also unbelievably bovine.”
