Dodgers' Miguel Rojas is this generation's Hal Smith

Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas hit the biggest home run of his life on Saturday night in Game 7 of the World Series. His solo home run in the top of the ninth inning helped save the Dodgers' season, sending the game to extra innings where they would defeat the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-4, in 11 innings to win their second consecutive World Series championship. That home run, and the way the game played out, could make Rojas this generation's Hal Smith — an unsung hero who hit one of the biggest home runs in World Series history, only to have it be overshadowed by a more noteworthy home run later in the game. In Smith's case, it was Bill Mazeroski. In Rojas' case, it is going to be Will Smith for his 11th-inning home run. Miguel Rojas and Hal Smith are unsung heroes who came through when it mattered most Even if you are a longtime baseball fan, you probably do not know the name Hal Smith. And that's ok because he mostly became a footnote in baseball history. He spent 10 mostly unspectacular years in the major leagues between 1955 and 1964, bouncing around the league as a backup catcher and corner infielder. But on Oct. 13, 1960, as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates, he delivered one of baseball's most game-altering, season-altering and legacy-altering home runs. His three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 7 against the New York Yankees gave the Pirates a 9-7 lead, capping off a wild five-run inning that saw them erase a 7-4 deficit. In terms of win probability swings, it was one of the most impactful at-bats in the history of the sport, especially in the context of winning a championship. When Smith stepped into the batter's box, the Pirates' win probability was only 30 percent. When he crossed home plate after taking his home run trot, their win probability jumped to a staggering 93 percent. It was a 63 percent swing in win probability in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 7 of the World Series. If that had been the game-winning hit, Smith would have a statue in Pittsburgh. But because the Yankees battled back with two runs in the top of the ninth, it set the stage for Mazeroski to hit his walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Mazeroski became the hero with the statue, and Smith became mostly forgotten. Smith had only appeared in three of the seven games in that World Series and did not even start Game 7. He only entered the game after starting catcher Smoky Burgess was removed for a pinch-runner. His home run was his only at-bat of the game. It's not that different from what happened with Rojas on Saturday. Rojas has spent his career as an unsung middle infielder and has only appeared in a handful of the Dodgers' playoff games. Entering play on Saturday, he had literally not had a hit in a month. He was not the player anybody had penciled in as a game-changing hero. But he delivered a swing that nearly matched Smith's in terms of improbability in a winner-take-all game in the World Series. When Rojas stepped into the batter's box in the ninth inning, the Dodgers' win probability was down to only 9 percent. When he crossed home plate, it jumped all the way up to 44 percent, representing a 35 percent swing. It's not quite on the level of Smith's home run in terms of size, but it was still just as important and unlikely. But when Dodgers fans think back to this game in 30 or 40 years, they are going to be more likely to remember Will Smith's 11th-inning home run. Or Yoshinobu Yamamoto for coming out of the bullpen to win his third game of the World Series. As important as all of that was, none of it happened without Rojas.

Sharjah RTA: More than 60% of 35 road, infrastructure projects complete

Sharjah’s Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has been implementing 35 major road and infrastructure projects across cities in the eastern region to improve transport efficiency, ease traffic congestion and enhance quality of life through modern, safe and environmentally sustainable infrastructure. More than 60 per cent of the works have been completed, and most are expected to finish before the end of the year, Emarat Al Youm reported.Eng. Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, said the projects include expanding key highways, building bridges and smart intersections, and upgrading residential and mountain road networks. In total, 74.4 kilometres of roads have been constructed or upgraded, significantly cutting travel times between cities in the emirate.Al Othmani said future plans include expanding the road network in line with urban development, updating infrastructure in established neighbourhoods, and increasing the use of intelligent traffic management systems to boost network efficiency and improve services for residents and visitors.. Among the completed projects are the road linking Kalba and Wadi Al Helo, access routes to Al Rafisah Dam, and development of Luluyah Beach in Khor Fakkan, including a 750-metre road, 226 parking spaces and a fishermen’s boat area to support tourism and marine activities. He added that these projects are being carried out under the directives of His Highness Dr. Sultan Sheikh bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, as part of an integrated vision to support the emirate’s wider development strategy.Current works include dual carriageways, major junctions and modern entry, and exit points designed to meet the demands of rapid urban and population growth.Addressing challenges in the Eastern Region, Al Othmani noted that rugged mountain terrain, heavy rain and flash floods required sophisticated engineering solutions to ensure road sustainability and user safety. Continuous coordination with utility providers was also needed to relocate service networks without delaying timelines.SRTA has also launched the “Green Traffic” smart system, which uses sensors to monitor traffic density and automatically adjust signal timings to allow continuous vehicle flow. The system is expected to cut emissions and improve air quality.. Al Othmani said the initiative marks a major shift in traffic management, reducing congestion and wait times, especially during peak hours, and supporting Sharjah’s transition towards smart and environmentally sustainable cities. He added that 2025 saw the completion of several major road projects in the Eastern Region, including dual highways linking Kalba to mountain areas, expansions in Khor Fakkan and upgraded intersections in Dibba Al Hisn. All works, he said, meet the latest safety and engineering standards and have improved mobility, reduced accidents and supported tourism and service sectors in the region. .Fujairah completes 453km road network in major infrastructure push.Dubai RTA launches six new projects to ease traffic and boost road efficiency.Traffic alert: Road closures in Sharjah; RTA urges drivers to take alternate routes.10 Dubai roads getting major upgrades to cut travel times and boost capacity

Kerry Katona's opens up on 'skeletons' as she confesses she 'just wanted to get away'

Kerry Katona has opened up about how there were "so many skeletons" in her closet and how she "just wanted to get away from it all" in an honest chat about her life. Speaking in a recent interview, the former Atomic Kitten singer was questioned about a statement she made in the new BBC documentary series, Girlbands Forever, where she described fame as a "really f****d up thing". Kerry , who's been on tour with close pal Katie Price , stood by her words that "it is", as she explained how her initial dream was simply to perform, "make people happy", and "inspire". The 45-year-old I'm A Celeb champion also highlighted how the public assumes you're "mega rich" once you achieve celebrity status, but she revealed that wasn't her reality, describing it as a "really lonely world". Kerry told the Observer : "They said we got a £1.5m record deal - well, I walked away with 36 grand in my bank. I didn't get any of that kind of money! It's a really lonely world." She went on: "I started dating Brian (McFadden), then there were so many skeletons in my closet: doing the glamour modelling, being in foster homes, my mum's sexuality. I did not enjoy that kind of attention." "When I became pregnant with Molly, I just wanted to get away from it all. I got a No 1 - I'm eternally grateful for that - but I didn't know how to handle it. I was suicidal. I turned to drugs." The new three-part series, which explores the world of girl bands from the 90s through to the 2010s, reportedly examines the challenges encountered by these iconic groups. Meanwhile, Kerry , who is currently in a relationship with Paolo Margaglione (whom she met on Celebs Go Dating ), recently tackled some false pregnancy rumours in her column for New Magazine, disclosing that they were generated by AI. Kerry wrote: "Paolo and I were victims of AI last week when someone created a fake pregnancy reveal picture of us holding a baby scan, which was absolutely ridiculous. "I actually got my hopes up when I saw it! Jokes aside, I think it's a little bit insensitive to create those things, though. I'm a 45 year old woman who would really love to have another baby, but I don't know whether it will happen or not." She added that AI "in that sense" is "getting out of hand", adding that she would have loved the picture to have been real and will continue to hope that it "does happen", but at present, she's "definitely not pregnant". Kerry has also shared her wish that her new relationship "works" but will "never forget this feeling" if it doesn't. Speaking on the Suddenly Single podcast , she said: "I hope it works, but even if it doesn't, I'll never forget this feeling. You see me falling in love [on Celebs Go Dating]. Even if this ends tomorrow, I don't think I'll have a feeling like this every again."

How Far Along is the Task Force on Cikande's Cs-137 Decontamination?

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Cesium-137 (Cs-137) Radiation Hazard Management Task Force is accelerating the decontamination of radioactive material around the Cikande Modern Industrial Estate, Serang Regency. The Serang Regency Government previously relocated 27 families from the exposure zone to two sites in Sukatani Village, while ensuring the provision of basic services.Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, the Environment Minister who heads the task force, stated that officers are inspecting each home to guarantee complete decontamination. "Coordination for retrieving or salvaging personal items such as mattresses or clothing will be managed by the local regency government," he said in an official statement on Sunday, November 2, 2025.According to Hanif, the task force's responsibilities include establishing and securing the zone, accelerating technical decontamination, supporting resident relocation and logistics, and communicating risks to the public. Daily radiation dose monitoring is also being conducted to ensure all activities are carried out safely, promptly, and transparently.Currently, seven of the 12 exposure points outside the industrial area are undergoing decontamination. Five exposed areas will be technically sealed through casting and cementing, as directed by the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten). This action is necessary due to the presence of residual material, even though the current dose is below 2.5 microsieverts.Regarding security measures, the government has installed zinc fences around areas with a material volume of approximately 10,000 as a temporary measure.Hanif clarified the protocol: "For areas that cannot be removed due to being too deep, they will be cemented according to Bapeten's recommendations. Meanwhile, locations with a material volume of 10,000 cubic meters will be temporarily fenced with zinc."Hanif ensured that all task force officers were strictly adhering to radiation safety standards and cross-agency protocols. He urged local residents to continue coordinating with Serang Regency officials if they need to access personal belongings during the relocation."We hope the decontamination and recovery phase in this village will be completed in two to three weeks, God willing. Please remain patient and continue coordinating with officers," Hanif concluded.Editor’s Choice: Indonesia Moves 426 Tons of Cesium-137 Waste to Temporary Storage SiteClick here to get the latest news updates from Tempo on Google News

Trump orders military to prepare strikes on Nigerian militants

Nov. 2 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump has ordered the military to prepare for strikes against Islamist militants in Nigeria as the country's government defended its sovereignty. "If the Nigerian government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the United States will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, 'gu ns-a-blazing,' to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities," Trump said on his Truth Social platform Saturday. Trump said that he was ordering the U.S. Defense Department to prepare for possible action, which he said would be "fast, vicious and sweet." Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth responded to Trump's instruction in a post to social media, calling for the end of the alleged killing of Christians in Nigeria. "The Department of War is preparing for action," Hegseth said, referring to its unofficial name bestowed by the president. "Either the Nigerian government protects Christians, or we will kill the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities." But the Nigerian government pushed back against Trump, clarifying that Islamist militants are not specifically targeting Christians. It also contested the implication that the government is not religiously tolerant and said that it continues to take steps to defend all civilians from violence, in addition to issuing a defense of its sovereignty as a democratic government. "The characterization of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians," President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said in a statement on social media. But Tinubu added that his administration is committed to working with the United States government and the international community "to deepen understanding and cooperation on protection of communities of all faiths." Daniel Bwala, the spokesperson for the Nigerian presidency, said in a statement that Tinubu and Trump have a "shared interest" in fighting against terrorism and heralded Trump for authorizing arms sales to Nigeria. "President Tinubu has adequately utilized the opportunity in the fight against terrorism for which we have massive results to show for it," Bwala said. Bwala said that Tinubu would seek to resolve differences in view whether the militants were only and specifically targeting Christians in a meeting in coming days. The meeting, he said, would either occur at the White House or the Nigerian State House. Meanwhile, Bwala told the BBC that while Trump was trying to help Nigeria tackle the issue, Nigeria maintains its sovereignty and any military action against militants by the United States would be carried out together with the African nation.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar seeks leave for natives of Bihar to cast vote

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Sunday said he would appeal to organisations, including Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI) and industry associations, to grant a three or four-day leave to workers from Bihar residing in Karnataka so that they can travel home and cast their votes in the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. He was speaking at a meeting with members of the Karnataka Bihar Samaj in Byatarayanapura. Mr. Shivakumar thanked the Bihari community for their contribution to the State’s growth and said, “Your community has been part of Karnataka’s labour and workforce. Without Bihari workers, who form a majority of the labour force, Bengaluru would not have developed like this.” Community Hall to be set up for Biharis Mr. Shivakumar also said that he would speak to the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) Commissioner regarding setting up a community hall for the Bihar community in Bengaluru. “You all (community members) never came to meet me earlier. Now I got to know that your community does not have an office or a meeting place. I will speak to the BDA Commissioner to provide a place for your community,” he added. Tejashwi Yadav as CM, Rahul Gandhi as PM Mr. Shivakumar requested the community to vote for the Mahagathbandhan (INDIA alliance) and support RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as Bihar Chief Minister. “We want Mr. Yadav to be the Chief Minister and Rahul Gandhi to be the Prime Minister. That is our goal,” he said. “Mr. Yadav also spoke to me. He said at any cost, we must make Mr. Gandhi the Prime Minister. We want a change in Bihar. Even the guarantees implemented in Karnataka are now being followed there, it’s a Congress guarantee.” He added that the Nitish Kumar era is ‘coming to an end’, claiming that the BJP was trying to drive from the backseat through him. “Today, Bihar is not with Nitish Kumar; it’s his last chapter. The BJP knows they cannot make him the leader again,” the Deputy Chief Minister said. When some people at the meeting said they wanted to see him as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka, Mr. Shivakumar brushed aside the remarks, “That is not important for me. Mr. Gandhi becoming the Prime Minister and Mr. Yadav becoming the Chief Minister is what matters to me.”

Money laundering allegation: TikToker Jarvis threatens legal action against Peller

The management of popular TikTok creator Amadou Elizabeth, widely known as Jadrolita or Jarvis, has threatened to take legal action against fellow creator Hamzat Habeeb, also known as Peller, over allegations linking her to money laundering. During a recent TikTok livestream, Peller alleged that money laundering takes place on the platform through its gifting system and suggested that Jarvis was involved in such activities. Clips from the livestream have circulated on social media, with Peller claiming he initially believed Jarvis was wealthy until she “revealed the secret.” ALSO READ: Police arrest seven kidnap suspects, rescue victims in Delta He also alleged that a “gifter” who supported him during a livestream once offered a 50:50 share of the money generated from TikTok gifting—an offer he said he declined—citing it as an example of how people allegedly launder money through gifting on the app. Although both creators later appeared to reconcile following their recent social media interactions, Jarvis’s management, Aiso Entertainment, has dismissed the allegations as false and defamatory. In a statement shared on Sunday via its Instagram handle, #aisohub, the management described the claims as “patently false and malicious,” maintaining that Jarvis had never been involved in any illegal financial activity. “The management of Jadrolita, alongside Jadrolita herself, unequivocally and categorically refutes this egregious claim in its entirety,” the statement read. It further stressed that Jarvis had “never engaged in any form of illicit financial conduct” and demanded that Peller issue a public apology within 48 hours. “We hereby demand that Peller and his management issue an immediate, unconditional, and publicly disseminated apology to Jadrolita and her team,” Aiso said, warning that failure to do so would result in legal action. The management added that the allegation amounted to reputational sabotage and stated that the matter would not be ignored. ALSO READ TOP STORIES FROM NIGERIAN TRIBUNE

Victor Osimhen named best striker in Turkey by current Super Lig top scorer

Paul Onuachu has hailed Victor Osimhen as the best striker in Turkey after Trabzonspor’s draw with GalatasarayThe Nigerian duo maintain a strong friendship despite being rivals in the Turkish Super LigGalatasaray reportedly has placed a massive €130 million valuation on Osimhen amid Barcelona interest Nigerian forward Paul Onuachu has heaped praise on fellow Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, calling him the best striker in Turkey. The Trabzonspor striker, currently the Turkish Super Lig’s top scorer, made the remark after his side’s 0–0 draw against Galatasaray on Saturday. Onuachu, who rejoined Trabzonspor permanently this summer after a successful loan spell, has been in hot form this season, scoring seven goals in ten league games, as seen on Transfermarkt. Despite a quiet performance against Okan Buruk’s Galatasaray, the 31-year-old remained upbeat after the match. When asked by journalists on who he considered the better striker between himself and Osimhen, Onuachu laughed and responded, “Osimhen.” The compliment reflects the mutual respect and friendship shared between the two Nigerian internationals. They were seen chatting and sharing smiles alongside former Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana after the final whistle at RAMS Park. Nigeria’s finest strikers thriving abroad The warm exchange between Onuachu and Osimhen highlights the rise of Nigerian strikers in Europe’s top leagues. Both forwards have carved out reputations as lethal finishers, with Osimhen’s athleticism and work rate complementing Onuachu’s towering presence and aerial dominance. Their success is a source of pride for Nigerian football fans, as the duo continue to make headlines for both their club performances and their friendship off the pitch. Osimhen is expected to be back for national team action when the World Cup playoffs kick off on November 13, as the Super Eagles continue their bid to qualify for football’s biggest international competition. Onauchu, on the other hand, will be hoping to get a recall to the national team by Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle after a brilliant start to the season in Turkey. Osimhen’s value soars amid interest from Barcelona While Onuachu continues to dominate the scoring charts, Osimhen remains the most talked-about name in Turkish football. The Galatasaray star has been instrumental in keeping the defending champions five points clear at the top of the Super Lig standings. Reports from beIN SPORTS reveal that Galatasaray have placed an eye-watering €130 million price tag on Osimhen. The Super Lig champions have made it clear that their prized asset will not leave for anything less, despite growing interest from top European clubs, most notably Barcelona. With Robert Lewandowski’s time at the Camp Nou nearing an end, Barcelona are reportedly considering Osimhen as his long-term successor. However, Galatasaray’s management insists that only a record-breaking offer will be enough to tempt them into selling the Nigerian striker. Osimhen sends message to Galatasaray fans In another development, Legit.ng reported that Osimhen has sent a message to Galatasaray fans after the 0-0 draw against Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super League match on November 1, 2025 Galatasaray dominated the match but failed to score, hitting the bar and having goals ruled out for offside in an entertaining encounter at Rams Park. Ending household poverty to be key to LDF’s campaign for local body polls

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretariat on Sunday signalled that eradicating poverty at the household level will be central to the ruling Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) campaign narrative for the upcoming local body elections. CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan also dangled the prospect of increasing the monthly social welfare pension from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500, with the rider that the Union government end its “financial embargo” on Kerala and release the ₹2 lakh crore obligatory federal funds constitutionally owed to the State. Mr. Govindan said poverty eradication is within the government’s easy reach, given that the NITI Aayog pegs Kerala’s poverty at 0.5% of the State’s population. In contrast, in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Govindan said that an estimated 28% of the population reeled under the daily deprivations—homelessness and lack of livelihood means, education, piped drinking water, electricity, health care, toilet facilities and rationing system. He said United Democratic Front (UDF)-controlled district panchayats, Corporations, municipalities and grama panchayats were at the forefront of the apolitical and bipartisan community effort to eradicate extreme poverty, which involved lakhs of volunteers, including Kudumbashree workers, Accredited Social Health Activists, Anganwadi workers and residents’ association. He said the LDF would follow the same model to erase poverty in Kerala. “The people’s movement for poverty eradication will dovetail with the LDF’s local body election campaign,” he said. Mr. Govindan said the LDF did not eradicate poverty with the swish of a magic wand, as touted by Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan. “In Ernakulam, the Congress-ruled district panchayat felt harried that it could not declare the district poverty eradicated because of the anomalies concerning an individual beneficiary. The Cabinet resolved the issue at a stroke, enabling Ernakulam, the Opposition leader’s home district, to join the November 1 declaration,” he added. Seat-sharing LDF convener T.P. Ramakrishnan stated that the ruling coalition has finalised its seat sharing and set its local body electioneering in motion. He said the LDF would build its local body campaign on the government’s achievements and its vision of a modern, poverty-free polity driven by a knowledge economy. Mr. Ramakrishnan said social welfare and development would take precedence over provincial and national politics in the local body campaign. “Livelihood and development issues would edge out muckraking political campaigns and petty politicking,” he said.

Satish Jarkiholi’s Delhi visit triggers political speculations

Amid the purported intra-party power struggle over leadership issue, Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi’s trip to Delhi has raised speculations in political circles. Counted among those in Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s inner circle, Mr. Jarkiholi is expected to visit Delhi in the next couple of days. While he insisted that his trip was not political, on Sunday he also did not rule out the possibility of meeting Central leaders. MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah, son of the Chief Minister, had recently caused a flutter in the Congress after he announced Mr. Jarkiholi’s name as Mr. Siddaramaiah’s successor only to clarify that he had meant Mr. Jarkiholi to be the successor in the Ahinda (Kannada acronym for Minorities, OBC and Dalits) ideology and politics. “The trip is not political but is administrative in nature. I may go to Delhi in a day or two to meet Central Ministers such as Nitin Gadkari. Whenever I go to Delhi, I go and meet party leaders and there is no need to attach any special meaning to this,” Mr. Jarkiholi told reporters on Sunday. However, party sources said that Mr. Jarkiholi has been angling for the post of the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, a position currently being held by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Sources said that his Delhi visit could be linked to his lobbying for the KPCC post, and that a administrative reason could also be there. In another statement related to leadership, Transport and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy has clarified that he was not in any leadership race. His statement came in response to a page created on social media seeking the Chief Minister’s post for him by some of his followers. He urged his followers not to indulge in such acts. Meanwhile, when reporters sought his reaction about Mr. Jarkiholi’s visit to Delhi, Mr. Shivakumar said: “Leaders visit Delhi for a lot of work. I am travelling to Bihar on November 5 and 6. The Union Urban Development Minister has called me for a meeting. Then there is the Cauvery Water Tribunal judgment. These visits should not be politicised.”

Speaking during the 'Cricket Live' programme after the match, Aaron said about Sundar's knock, 'Washington has demonstrated his effectiveness with the bat, especially against short-pitched deliveries, as we saw in the previous IPL. His first five boundaries off the fast bowlers were all through short balls, showing how well he thrives on them. Australia likely underestimated his capability to play the short ball, and his early six off Nathan Ellis set the tone perfectly. Though he did not bowl in this match, his contribution with the bat was crucial.' He also expressed happiness with the return of Arshdeep Singh, whose left-arm angle helped him get three wickets, and he formed a fine bowling partnership with Jasprit Bumrah, saying that two of the best T20I bowlers in a playing XI is a 'huge asset'. 'Arshdeep and Jasprit both excel at taking wickets and restricting runs. Having two of the world's best T20 fast bowlers is a huge asset. Arshdeep was invaluable, especially with his ability to move the ball in the power play. He bowled tightly to key batsmen like Travis Head and Josh Inglis, taking crucial wickets and maintaining pressure. Even though Marcus Stoinis played well, Arshdeep's wickets were well deserved and pivotal for India,' he concluded. With this win, the series is levelled at 1-1, with two matches left. Earlier, India won the toss and opted to bowl first. After powerplay heroics from pacer Arshdeep Singh (3/35), it was a partnership between skipper Mitch Marsh (11) and Tim David (74 in 38 balls, with eight fours and five sixes) of 59 runs for third wicket and a 64-run stand between Marcus Stoinis (64 in 39 balls, with eight fours and two sixes) and Matt Short (26* in 15 balls, with two fours and a six) took Australia to 186/6 in 20 overs. In the run-chase, contributions did come from skipper Abhishek Sharma (25 in 16 balls, with two fours and two sixes), skipper Suryakumar Yadav (24 in 11 balls, with a four and two sixes) and Tilak Varma (29 in 26 balls, with a four and six). India was 145/5 in the 15th over in a tricky spot. However, a blitz from Washington (49* in 23 balls, with three fours and four sixes) and Jitesh Sharma (22* in 13 balls, with three fours) helped India keep the series alive. (ANI)

Gov Abdulrazaq moves to transform Kwara to hub of technology

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has expressed his determination to transform the state into a hub of technological innovation through the “Catch Them Young” initiative. The governor expressed satisfaction with the growing interest and success of young Kwarans in the tech space at the just-concluded Kwara Coding and Digital Literacy Programme (KCDLP) held in Ilorin. The event, themed Kwara Futures: Empowering a Digitally Ready Generation, was organised by the Office of the Special Assistant (S.A.) to the Governor on Digital Innovation, Hon. Kayode Ishola. Governor AbdulRazaq said the government remains committed to positioning Kwara on the global map through seamless collaboration with international tech accelerators and access to cross-border funding opportunities. In his welcome address, the governor’s aide described AbdulRazaq as “the architect of a new digital Kwara,” noting that the gathering was more than a technology showcase. “It is a testament to visionary leadership, inclusive governance, and the limitless potential of our young people. It tells the story of how one idea, anchored in foresight and equity, is transforming education, innovation, and human capital in Kwara State,” he stated. He recalled that when the governor approved the pilot phase of the Coding and Digital Literacy Programme in 2024, it was not merely an educational experiment but a strategic intervention to prepare children for a digital economy. “He envisioned a Kwara where every child, regardless of background or geography, can learn, create, and compete globally. That vision — that digital literacy is the new basic literacy — continues to guide our journey today,” he added. According to him, the KCDLP has evolved into a national model of innovation and inclusion, training 5,604 students across 50 public schools in all 16 local government areas. “We have engaged over 120 instructors, including NYSC members, trained teachers, and digital volunteers, and introduced coding, robotics, innovative thinking, and digital design to thousands of students,” he said. Beyond the data, Ishola highlighted stories of transformation, noting that students in Baruten, Igbaja, and Ifelodun now design animations and simple apps. “Girls from Bishop Smith Memorial College, Ilorin, developed a learning app for the visually impaired,” he said, adding that: “In Ajase-Ipo, training is hosted at the ENACT Innovation Hub, a facility established through partnership and shared vision. “A team of our students also emerged winners of the 2025 Kids Innovation Challenge, developing the AgriTech Mini Dashboard — a smart agriculture solution now gaining national attention.” He further outlined the mission of his office, which includes expanding the programme to 100 schools and 10,000 students by mid-2026, establishing Innovation Learning Centres across senatorial districts, training more teachers under the proposed Digital Educators Fellowship, and launching “Girls Code Kwara” — a focused initiative aimed at increasing female participation in tech to 60 per cent by 2026. Meanwhile, no fewer than ten schools made project presentations focusing on the design and development of Smart School Attendance Systems, a Universal Report Card Generator, Weather Forecast Applications, a Python-Based Banking Simulation Project, the Expense Visualizer, a Web Dictionary App, and the Igbaja Farm Expense Tracker (IFET) App. United Junior Secondary School, Ilorin, emerged overall winner with the highest points, earning a cash prize of ₦1 million. Ilorin Grammar School (IGS), Ilorin, received ₦500,000 as first runner-up, while Government Girls’ Day Secondary School, Pakata, clinched the second runner-up position with ₦250,000. Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, said the government had paid more attention to the education sector than any recent administration in the state, adding that the programme was designed to give young people a fair chance to thrive in the new economy. Commissioner for Communications, Hon. Bola Olukoju, affirmed that the governor is passionate about advancing education and innovation. Similarly, the Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology, Hon. Damilola Yusuf Adelodun, commended the government for its commitment to securing the future of students. Also speaking, Commissioner for Social Development, Hajia Mariam Nnafatima Imam, lauded the governor for his drive to make public schools a hub of digital literacy. Funmilayo Obi of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) commended the governor for believing in young people and for “planting seeds of innovation that are fast becoming a forest of progress.” NIGERIAN TRIBUNE

‘Christian genocide’: Kwankwaso reacts to Trump’s invasion threat against Nigeria

…calls for diplomatic engagement, unity among Nigerians Former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has called on Nigerians to remain united in the face of growing tensions following threats from the United States over the nation’s security situation. In a post on X on Sunday, Kwankwaso expressed concern about recent comments by the U.S. President Donald Trump, who had designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.” He stressed that Nigeria remains a sovereign nation confronting various security challenges that cut across religious, ethnic, and political lines. The former governor urged the United States to support Nigeria with advanced technology and intelligence to combat insecurity instead of issuing threats that could worsen divisions within the country. He also advised the Nigerian government to appoint special envoys and permanent ambassadors to engage diplomatically with the U.S. and protect Nigeria’s interests on the international stage. Kwankwaso appealed to citizens to embrace unity and solidarity, describing the current situation as a time for collective strength rather than division. This is coming after Trump, in a post on his Truth Social account on Saturday, instructed the U.S. War Department to prepare for a possible strike in Nigeria. He accused the Nigerian government of turning a blind eye to what he described as the “genocide of Christians” across the country. Trump warned that the United States would immediately halt all aid and assistance to Nigeria if the attacks on Christians continue. He also indicated that America might intervene militarily to eliminate what he called “Islamic terrorists” responsible for the killings. “If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump wrote. He further stated, “I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST!” ALSO READ TOP STORIES FROM NIGERIAN TRIBUNE
