Technology

If Microsoft can't source enough electricity to power all the AI GPUs it has, you have to wonder how Amazon is going to cope in its new $38 billion deal with OpenAI

To keep the AI juggernaut rolling ever forward, you might think that the biggest companies in artificial intelligence desperately need ridiculous numbers of AI GPUs. According to Microsoft, though, the issue isn't a compute or hardware limit, it's that there's not enough electrical power to run it all. And if that's the case, it raises the question as to how Amazon is going to cope now that it's signed a $38 billion, multi-year deal with OpenAI to give the company access to its servers. It was Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, who made the point about insufficient power in a 70-minute interview (via Tom's Hardware) with YouTube channel Bg2 Pod, alongside OpenAI's boss, Sam Altman. It came about when the interview's host, Brad Gerstner, mentioned that Nvidia's Jen-Hsun Huang had said that there was almost zero chance of there being a 'compute glut' within the next couple of years (and by that, he means an excess of AI GPUs). "The biggest issue we are now having is not a compute glut, but it’s power," replied Nadella. "It’s sort of the ability to get the builds done fast enough close to power. So, if you can’t do that, you may actually have a bunch of chips sitting in inventory that I can’t plug in. In fact, that is my problem today. It’s not a supply issue of chips; it’s actually the fact that I don’t have warm shells to plug into." The warm shells that he refers to aren't tasty tacos; they're hubs already connected with the relevant power and other facilities required, ready to be loaded up with masses of AI servers from Nvidia. What Nadella is effectively saying is that getting hold of GPUs isn't the problem, it's accessing cheap enough electricity to run them all. That's not necessarily just a case of there just not being sufficient power stations—it matters a great deal where they are, because while one can just dump a building down almost anywhere, if the local grid can't cope with the enormous power demands of tens of thousands of Nvidia Hopper and Blackwell GPUs, then there's no point in building the shell in the first place. When I heard Microsoft's CEO make that comment, I immediately recalled another news story I'd read today: OpenAI's $38 billion deal with Amazon that will give it access to AWS's AI servers. OpenAI already has such an agreement with Microsoft to use its Azure services, with the latter pumping money into the former as well. "OpenAI will immediately start utilizing AWS compute as part of this partnership, with all capacity targeted to be deployed before the end of 2026, and the ability to expand further into 2027 and beyond," the announcement says. "The infrastructure deployment that AWS is building for OpenAI features a sophisticated architectural design optimized for maximum AI processing efficiency and performance. Clustering the NVIDIA GPUs—both GB200s and GB300s—via Amazon EC2 UltraServers on the same network." Does this mean AWS is effectively handing over all its Nvidia AI GPUs to OpenAI over the next few years, or will it expand its AI network by building new servers? It surely can't be the former, as AWS offers its own AI services, so the most logical explanation is that Amazon is going to buy more GPUs and build fresh data centers. But if Microsoft can't power all the AI GPUs it has now, how on Earth is Amazon going to do it? Research by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory suggests that within three years, the total electrical energy consumption by data centers will reach as high as 580 trillion Wh. According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, that would put AI consuming as much electricity as 22% of all US households per year. To meet this enormous demand, some companies are looking at restarting old nuclear power stations, or in the case of Google, building a raft of new ones. While the former is hoped to be ready by 2028, it will only produce 7.3 TWh per annum at best—a mere 1.3% of the total projected power demand. This is clearly not going to be a valid long-term solution to AI's energy problem. With so much capital now invested in AI, it's not going to disappear without a trace (though that would solve the question of powering it all), so the only way forward for Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft is to either build vastly more power stations, design and build specialised low-energy AI ASICs (in the same way that bitcoin mining has gone this way), or more likely, both. This generates a new question: Where is the money required for all of this going to come from? Answers on a postcard, please.

Police force orders internal review into events before mass stabbing on London-bound train

The force said the teenager was non-fatally injured at 7.10pm on Friday before a man with a knife was seen at a barber’s in Fletton 15 minutes later, although this was only reported to police two hours later. A second report of a knifeman was made at 9.25am on Saturday when he was still at the scene, but when police arrived 18 minutes later they could not find him. The mass stabbing on the train happened on Saturday evening, and the train made an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon after passengers pulled emergency alarms and the driver took action. Simon Megicks, Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire Police, said he has “commissioned an internal review of the events which occurred prior to the tragic events of Saturday evening”. He said he welcomed the “additional scrutiny”. Mr Megicks said the force had also referred itself to watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is standard practice, but the referral “did not meet the criteria for a valid referral, so they are not investigating the matter”. It comes as a train crew member who was seriously injured while trying to protect passengers was named as Samir Zitouni, known as Sam. The 48-year-old customer experience host was working onboard the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) train from Doncaster to London. He “did not hesitate as he stepped forward to protect those around him”, his employer said, and he remains in hospital in a stable condition but critically unwell. LNER said Mr Zitouni, who has worked for the firm for more than 20 years, has been credited with helping to save multiple lives after passengers came under threat. Politicians have called for honours for Mr Zitouni and for passenger Stephen Crean, 61, who defended himself with nothing but his fists when the knifeman approached him. Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said in a post on X: “Samir Zitouni and Stephen Crean are heroes who saved lives. “They showed the best of Britain: putting themselves in harm’s way to protect others. “They both deserve the George Cross in recognition of their incredible bravery.” Shadow transport secretary Richard Holden called for Mr Zitouni to be “considered for recognition through the UK Honours system for acts of selfless and outstanding bravery” in a letter to the Cabinet Office shared on X. Downing Street said bravery awards were a matter for the Honours Committee but “it’s very clear that this man’s bravery saved lives and we pay tribute to that”. The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “It’s a matter for the honours system, but I don’t think anyone can doubt the level of bravery and character that this man showed in the moment to defend and protect the lives of innocents.” David Horne, LNER managing director, said: “In a moment of crisis, Sam did not hesitate as he stepped forward to protect those around him. “His actions were incredibly brave, and we are so proud of him, and of all our colleagues who acted with such courage that evening.” Mr Zitouni’s role is customer experience host, which largely involves providing onboard catering. His family said in a statement released by LNER: “We are immensely proud of Sam and his courage. “The police called him a hero on Saturday evening, but to us – he’s always been a hero.” Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said Mr Zitouni’s “remarkable quick thinking and selfless action saved lives and he has demonstrated bravery beyond measure”. Anthony Williams, 32, was remanded into custody at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with 10 counts of attempted murder over the train incident. He is next due to appear at Cambridge Crown Court on December 1.

How do once-approved chemicals become banned? Looking into a gel manicure’s hidden risk

If you’ve sat in a nail salon recently, you may well have encountered TPO or trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide to give it its full chemical name. You won’t have seen the name on the bottle. But if you’ve had your gelled fingers under a blue-violet lamp, TPO could well have been part of the process. TPO is what chemists call a photoinitiator – basically, a chemical that reacts when it’s hit with UV light. When your nails go under the lamp, TPO breaks apart and helps link tiny liquid molecules together, turning the polish into that solid, shiny, long-lasting gel layer. It’s smart chemistry, and it’s one reason gel manicures last so much longer than normal nail polish. But recently, the EU banned TPO because research suggests it might increase the risk of cancer and could be harmful to the reproductive system. Meanwhile, alternatives such as benzophenone and other common photoinitiators come with concerns of their own. Benzophenone, for instance, is listed as a possible endocrine disruptor, meaning it may interfere with hormones. Another common substitute for TPO, called TPO-L is harmful to aquatic life and may cause skin allergies. None of this is hidden. The European Chemicals Agency maintains a public database where anyone can look up chemicals and find their hazard classifications and environmental data. The point is not that nail varnish is dangerous. It is that even everyday products involve chemistry that is more complex than we might assume and that decisions about what is “safe enough” involve weighing risks, benefits and available alternatives. The same pattern has played out recently with two much wider-reaching chemicals: Pfas, so-called “forever chemicals”, and glyphosate, a herbicide used in agriculture. Recently, the European Commission announced new restrictions on Pfas in firefighting foam. It did this because Pfas don’t break down in the environment and can build up in living things over time, which can be harmful. Meanwhile, the use of glyphosate has been under review, with the EU approving its continued use and the UK due to make a decision in the next year or so. None of these decisions happen instantly or automatically. Here is how chemical safety is regulated. Pharmaceuticals are tightly controlled globally, but chemicals aren’t always regulated as strictly. However, in the EU and UK, chemicals are managed under a system called Reach that is often described as one of the most comprehensive chemical regulations in the world. The basic difference in how we treat medicines versus chemicals comes down to how we think about risk. Chemicals are expected to be safe when used properly. Medicines, on the other hand, are allowed to have some risks if the benefits outweigh the risks. That’s why harsh cancer treatments, which can have serious side-effects, are still considered acceptable – because they can save lives. And it’s also why very dangerous chemicals can still be made and used, as long as there are strong safety measures in place. Under Reach, companies must register their chemicals and provide detailed information on a chemical’s properties, hazards and safe handling. The principle here is: “no data, no market”. Regulators then evaluate that information – and can request more if needed. Such substances may then be authorised, meaning they can only be used if companies can demonstrate that risks are controlled or that societal benefits outweigh them while safer options are developed. If a substance poses an unacceptable risk that cannot otherwise be managed, regulators can restrict or ban specific uses of chemicals. Later if evidence emerges that suggests a chemical can cause cancer, harm reproduction, persist in the environment, accumulate in living things, or otherwise be hazardous, it might be added to a list of “substances of very high concern”. Reach is a strict, step-by-step system that requires companies to prove their chemicals can be used safely. But in reality, we often only learn the full effects of a chemical over time, once it is being used outside the lab and in everyday life. That’s why decisions about chemicals such as TPO, Pfas and glyphosate can change slowly and sometimes take many years to fully settle. As a result of cases such as these, many feel that despite Reach being one of the most comprehensive chemical regulations in the world, it isn’t enough. This has led to a philosophy known as safe and sustainable by design, where, instead of making a chemical and then proving it is safe, a material is designed with safety and disposal or recycling in mind. In this area, artificial intelligence may well prove to have a major role. AI is increasingly being used to predict toxicity of chemicals and so allow them to be flagged before they are manufactured. Chemistry has built the modern world, given us durable coatings on the ends of our fingers, high-yield crops, non-stick pans, waterproof jackets and thousands of other unnoticed conveniences. It has also given us chemicals that travel too far, last too long and accumulate where they were never intended. The challenge is not to stop using chemistry. It is to use it wisely. Whether we are talking about manicures, farmland, or emergency foam, the principle should be the same: use chemistry that does the job, without leaving a legacy. The more we can predict that, the fewer surprises we’ll find later.

China Defends Cooperation With Venezuela, Rejects 'Use Or Threat Of Force In International Relations'

The Chinese government defended its ties with Venezuela, saying it "constitutes normal cooperation between sovereign states" and rejected "the use of threat of force in international relations" as the Trump administration escalates pressure against the South American regime. The comment was made by Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning, and comes after a report claiming that the Maduro regime has been seeking help from Venezuela, China and Iran. "China supports strengthened international cooperation to combat transnational crime and opposes the use of threat of force in international relations," Mao added. She then claimed that Beijing "opposes any attempt to undermine peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as unilateral coercive actions against foreign vessels that exceed reasonable and necessary limits," seemingly a reference to the recent strikes against alleged drug vessels. The report in question claimed that authoritarian President Nicolas Maduro asked Russia this month to overhaul the country's defensive radars, repair military aircraft, and potentially supply missiles. In a written message sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Maduro requested financing and logistical support. The documents indicate that Venezuelan officials approached China and Iran with similar requests, including drones and electronic warfare tools. It remains unclear how either country responded. Last Sunday, an Il-76 military cargo aircraft previously sanctioned by the United States arrived in Caracas after routing around Western airspace. The visit came a day after Moscow ratified a new strategic agreement with Caracas. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that Russia "respects Venezuela's sovereignty" and believes the situation should be resolved under international law. The Kremlin has also recently confirmed that it remains in contact with Maduro, citing existing "contractual obligations" between the governments. Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told state news agency TASS that Moscow is "in contact with our friends in Venezuela." Hurricane death toll rises to 43 in Haiti as aid pours in across the Caribbean

At least 25 deaths occurred in the southwestern coastal town of Petit-Goave, one of the hardest hit communities. The Category 5 storm, one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record, flooded nearly 12,000 homes and destroyed nearly 200 others after its outer bands battered Haiti last week. Numerous roads remain inaccessible. The government warned that there is a shortage of drinking water in several communities, and that it will soon distribute seeds and tools to farmers facing major agricultural losses. More than 1,700 people remain in shelters. Meanwhile, in nearby Jamaica, crews were trying to reach more than two dozen communities that remained cut off since Melissa made landfall on October 28. The storm killed at least 32 people in Jamaica, with officials warning that number would rise. Mike Bassett, head of the Christian disaster relief and development organisation World Vision International, said a potential humanitarian crisis could unfold if aid is not delivered quickly. “I have been doing this for over 10 years, and I have never seen anything like this,” Mr Bassett said Tuesday while in Jamaica. He said that while visiting hurricane-ravaged communities like Chester Castle and Cambridge, people were seen bathing in a river and harvesting its water for drinking because of a lack of electricity and water supply in the hurricane’s aftermath. World Vision is among a growing list of international aid agencies and volunteers that are working independently and with Jamaican officials to administer aid. Transport and Energy Minister Daryl Vaz, who is the co-chairman of the special committee established to streamline the government’s relief and recovery efforts, said: “The relief flights are coming in fast and furious and there is no shortage of supplies.” Pearnel Charles Jr, who leads Jamaica’s Social Security Ministry, said the relief effort is being ramped up. “We are co-ordinating with every available resource,” said Mr Charles, who rejected complaints that not enough was being done to get aid to storm survivors fast enough.

Sadiq Khan Reignites Donald Trump Feud By Backing Zohran Mamdani

Sadiq Khan has reignited his long-running feud with Donald Trump by backing left-wing Democrat Zohran Mamdani to win the race to become mayor of New York. Mamdani has come under fierce attacks from the US president, who has labelled him a “communist” and amplified false claims that he is in the US illegally. Trump has also threatened to withhold US government funds from New York if Mamdani wins the election, which taking place today. The US president has been an outspoken critic of Khan too, recently telling the United Nations General Assembly that he is a “terrible terrible mayor” and accusing him of wanting to introduce Sharia Law to London. A source close to the London mayor said there were “similarities between the attacks Mamdani has faced and what Sadiq has faced in elections”. “Weaponising Mamdani’s faith and linking him to terrorism and extremism is an old campaigning tactic, and one we’re all too familiar with here in London,” the source said. “The closer we get to the election, and the more his positive vision has connected with voters in New York City, the more divisive and desperate Mamdani’s opponents have become. “The mayor hopes that like in London, New Yorkers see through the politics of hatred and fear, and embrace Mamdani’s hopeful and optimistic vision for the future.” When will the NYC mayor be announced? Polls are open from 6am until 9pm New York time (11am until 2am UK time). The first results will come in shortly after the polls close, meaning we should have a result by Wednesday morning UK time.

Toasty CPU? This microwave PC build demonstrates that you ain't seen nothing yet

Here's one for you: Imagine you've built a neat little app that acts as a one stop shop for synchronising all of your RGB devices, regardless of which manufacturer made it—how would you go about getting eyes on your free app? If you're SignalRGB, the most obvious answer was apparently by giving away wonderfully improbable and lightly cursed PC builds. This time SignalRGB is giving away a custom PC built inside of a microwave, complete with a spinning motherboard screensaver. To be clear, this isn't the shell of an old microwave simply acting as an unorthodox PC tower case—it's an all in one setup with a tiny, fully functioning monitor mounted into the microwave door itself. There are no reheated nachos to speak of here. Before you ask, yes, the buttons are functional; besides typing in '1337' and hitting 'start' to boot the contraption, those microwave buttons have been repurposed to also offer Stream Deck functionality. Naturally, everything inside and out has been lined in RGB lighting too. As for that spinning motherboard, it's the MPG Z890I EDGE TI Motherboard—though don't worry, it doesn't actually spin while in use. Mounted on top of that wee mobo is an Intel Core Ultra 5 225 CPU, and then off to the left-hand side is a Nvidia RTX 5060Ti 16GB GPU. So…it's not the most powerful gaming setup I ever did see, but the prospect of playing something like extraction shooter Arc Raiders on a literal microwave is compelling all on its own. Thankfully, Arc Raiders' community is surprisingly chill, but I'm still charmed by this microwave PCs jokey warning labels about how 'toxic lobby chat may leak through vents.' That Intel chip, however, is catching direct hits such as 'May reach temperatures hotter than actual microwave' and 'Reapply thermal paste every 30 days.' Oof. If you want to be in with a chance of this novel PC build gracing your desk or, heck, your kitchen counters, all you need to do is comment on SignalRGB's original Reddit post. This is far from the first cursed PC build its given away, revealing this PC toaster earlier this year, so if you've missed out on this one, there's likely to be another unholy kitchen appliance conversion in the near future. While I'm definitely a fan of the 'Looks like [thing] but is actually a functioning gaming PC' genre of tech tinkering, it's always an added bonus when that PC in disguise is also decently functional. The monitor mounted into the microwave door plants this firmly in the realm of novelty builds, but I still sort of hope there's a way to plug a separate screen into this setup. Besides, screens mounted inside of your desktop tower are hardly unusual these days.

Oreo launches ‘turkey and stuffing’ and ‘creamed corn’ flavored cookies for Thanksgiving

Oreo has unveiled a special tin of cookies in honor of Thanksgiving. The beloved cookie company recently announced the release of the new fudge-covered cookies in six different flavors, as part of the “Oreo Thanksgiving Dinner Cookie Tin.” This tin includes two cookie flavors based on beloved Thanksgiving desserts, like Pumpkin Pie and Caramel Apple Pie. There are also the side dish flavors, like Cranberry Sauce, Sweet Potato, and Creamed Corn cookie flavors. Last but not least is a cookie inspired by a signature Thanksgiving Day meal: Turkey and Stuffing. The limited-edition offering, which includes two cookies in each of the six flavors, is “complete with a special-edition Thanksgiving belly band,” according to a description of the product. It is also a “test-and-learn” experience, as Oreo is inviting “fans to join a bold taste journey and share their honest feedback.” “This flavor experiment is not your typical OREO indulgence,” the product description reads. “It’s a chance to try something unforgettable and help shape the future of flavor innovation.” The Thanksgiving cookies are an online exclusive, sold only on Oreo’s website for $20. Oreo isn’t the only business preparing for the holiday season. Kraft has released an Apple Pie mac and cheese flavor in honor of Thanksgiving. The limited-time offering combines two Thanksgiving staples, mac and cheese and apple pie, and is meant to serve as a conversation starter this holiday season. Kraft’s spin on the boxed favorite marries the brand’s familiar mac and cheese flavor with cinnamon hints and green apple, creating a sweet and savory dish that “feels both familiar and adventurous,” the brand said in a press release. Meanwhile, Starbucks is preparing for the winter with its holiday menu hitting stores Thursday. Returning this season are the Peppermint Mocha, Caramel Brulée Latte, Iced Sugar Cookie Latte, and Iced Gingerbread Chai. The Chestnut Praline Latte and Eggnog Latte will also be added to the menu later in the year, though a specific date has not yet been revealed. Customers can also treat themselves to holiday-themed baked goods, like the Snowman Cookie, Cranberry Bliss Bar, and Sugar Plum Cheese Danish at Starbucks locations across the U.S. Additionally, Starbucks is reviving its fan-favorite red cup promotion for the holiday season. On November 13, the chain will be offering free 16-ounce limited-edition red reusable coffee cups with the purchase of any of Starbucks’s holiday-themed drinks in-store, at a drive-thru, or on the Starbucks app for pick-up or delivery.
