Jail term for Magherafelt man who blackmailed two women after 'cajoling' them into sharing intimate images

Cathan Quinn, with an address listed as Wesleyann Mews, was sentenced today (Tuesday, November 4) at Dungannon Crown Court for online blackmail of a sexual nature in respect of the two victims. He was sentenced to two years and two months, half of which will be served in custody and half on licence, and is subject to a restraining order for five years in respect of each victim. Speaking after the hearing, Detective Inspector Ryan said: “In early 2021, Cathan Quinn targeted two female victims. Using social media platforms, the defendant cajoled his victims into sharing intimate images. He then blackmailed both women, threatening to post the images online unless demands for money were met. “Both victims have suffered terribly throughout this nightmarish ordeal. It’s hard to truly imagine the trauma they have endured, and I am grateful to both for finding the courage to come forward and speak to us. Your support has been invaluable.” Sign up for a free Northern Ireland World newsletter and let us bring the news to you Detective Inspector Ryan added: “Today’s sentencing relates to our investigation into the online blackmail of two females. This, however, is not Quinn’s only offence of this nature. On 21 April in 2022, the defendant was given a prison sentence for similar offences against a third innocent victim, who also found the courage to speak to police.” The detective said: “I hope this sends out a very clear message to anyone who would seek to exploit and threaten others. Let me assure you, you can’t hide behind a computer or mobile screen. Rather, you will be identified and investigated. And you will be held to account. “To those innocent victims who may be experiencing similar, please don’t respond to demands. Don’t enter into further communication. If you can, confide in a trusted friend or family member, and please contact officers as soon as possible on 101. Dedicated officers will handle your case with the sensitivity you deserve.”

Australia to Force Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video to Spend 7.5 Percent of Revenue on Local Content

Ludo Studio/Disney+ Share on Facebook Share to Flipboard Send an Email Show additional share options Share on LinkedIn Share on Pinterest Share on Reddit Share on Tumblr Share on Whats App Print the Article Post a Comment The one thing the whole world can agree on is we want more Bluey. Australia is ready to make that a law. This week, the Australian government will formally introduce legislation that would require streamers of a certain scale to spend a percentage of their local revenue on local content. The concept is not new here — this issue was first raised in early 2023 — but the percentages are. The bill was not introduced earlier as the Aussies first waited out the 2024 U.S. presidential election and later feared that its winner, Donald Trump, could counterattack with tariffs. The legislation would mandate any streaming services with more than a million Australian subscribers must produce Australian drama, children’s, documentary, arts or educational programs — and the streamer must spend 7.5 percent of local revenue on creating local content. The number is much lighter than the 20 percent threshold that had been pushed by Screen Producers Australia. Broadcast and cable television already have similar regulations in place. “Since their introduction in Australia, streaming services have created some extraordinary shows. This obligation will ensure that those stories — our stories — continue to be made,” arts minister Tony Burke said. “We want to make sure no matter which platform people are watching, Australian stories are part of their experience,” communications minister Anika Wells said. British MPs are comparing one another to Cliff Bleszinski's dead live-service FPS LawBreakers to score points as videogame debate comes to UK Parliament

Remember LawBreakers? I have to be honest: I didn't. Or rather, I didn't until the game was suddenly resurrected in—of all places—the UK Parliament. If you suffer from the same defect of memory I do: LawBreakers was Cliff Bleszinski's ill-fated competitive FPS from 2017—the first game the developer made at his studio Boss Key Productions after he departed Epic. It was actually quite good, but that didn't stop it from meeting its final death just a year after it released. Now it's been summoned again, in the same part of the UK Parliament that once played host to the trials of Saint Thomas More and King Charles I, and I can only imagine their spirits are humbled to share the venue with such august company. UK Members of Parliament took to Westminster Hall to have a natter about a petition to "Prohibit publishers irrevocably disabling videogames they have already sold." In other words, the goals of the Stop Killing Games campaign. Ben Goldsborough, MP for South Norfolk, outed himself as a Victoria 2, Cities: Skylines, and Oddworld fan. Lib Dem MP Tom Gordon professed his Sims love. But the most baffling videogame cameo in the debate was, surely, LawBreakers, which was brought up by Labour's Mark Sewards—ostensibly to highlight a point about access to a game going away, but more realistically just so he could squeeze in a sick burn on his political opponents. "Another example [of games being killed], which Ross [Scott, Stop Killing Games founder] gave me is LawBreakers—a game that I imagine would have been popular with certain Members of the previous Parliament." Do you hear that? That's the critical hit klaxon going off. Civil wars have been started in this country for less. By the time this article has gone live I'll likely have been conscripted to fight in The Anarchy 2. Appropriately enough, Sewards' little aside garnered a few chortles from the assorted politicos, and he seemed very pleased with himself for the dig. It may have been lost on some of Parliament's older members, mind you. Which specific examples of, ah, untoward behaviour Sewards is referencing by the UK's previous Conservative government aren't made clear, but it's likely he had in mind events like the 'Partygate' scandal that helped topple Boris Johnson as PM, or the failure of then-Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to declare luxury flats purchases to Companies House. Sewards didn't just namecheck LawBreakers—though that's the only game he weaponised—he also referenced Babylon's Fall and Anthem as examples of games that went the way of the dodo and left players in the lurch. Referencing the government's statement that it has no plans to intervene in the UK videogame market, Sewards said that he "cannot help but observe that what is happening in this space could be perceived as a breach of consumer protection under unfair trading regulations. Those regulations prohibit traders from hiding information that consumers need in order to make an informed choice, yet when consumers buy a game today, they are almost never told how long it will remain functional. Consumers are sold a one-time purchase, but the publisher reserves the right to terminate it at any time for any reason."

Life-threatening drug circulating in Revelstoke, Interior Health warns

Revelstoke’s regional health authority has issued an alert for a life-threatening drug currently circulating in and around the city. The drug alert, posted Tuesday, Nov. 4 by Interior Health (IH) for Revelstoke and the surrounding area, warns the public that para-methoxymethamphetamine (PMMA) is a dangerous substance, especially if mixed with Ecstasy, MDMA or MDA. Adverse reactions to PMMA, which are also known as 4-MMA and being sold as green Mickey Mouse-shaped drugs, include naseau, vomiting, overheating and death. Though more recent data isn’t readily available, a study by the Canadian Medical Association Journal found seven people in B.C. and 20 in Alberta died in association with PMMA between June 2011 and April 2012. The average victim age was 24. After consuming a drug, “if you or someone else experiences significant agitation, fever, confusion, heavy sweating, or tremors, seek emergency medical help immediately,” IH advised in its alert. Substance users in the Revelstoke area can call or text Erica Maltby, a registered nurse with mental health and substance use support, at 250-814-8599 to access drug-checking services. Revelstoke Public Health, which operates at the Queen Victoria Hospital, offers these services. “Please ensure your clients are aware of safer drug use tips that can help prevent overdose as well as where they can access naloxone, drug checking and other overdose prevention services in your community,” IH adds. Other tips it recommends for people consuming drugs include doing so in the company of others; understanding the risks of mixing different drugs, including with alcohol; carrying and getting familiar with naloxone; and taking just half or less of a tablet, then waiting before taking the rest. Along with drug-checking support, IH’s mental health services team can be reached at 310-6478. The drug alert for Revelstoke remains in effect until next Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Yukon elections yield new government with majority mandate

With his party winning two-thirds of the 21 seats in the legislature, Yukon Party Leader and premier-designate Currie Dixon said his newly-elected majority government has received the “strongest mandate that any government has had in recent memory” in Yukon politics. “Having a strong majority means that the Yukon Party is well positioned to advance an agenda that we think is important for Yukon,” Dixon told the News by phone on Nov. 4. The general territorial elections saw the Yukon NDP take six seats (up from three) to pivot from the third party to the Official Opposition and a lone Liberal elected (down from eight) to the Yukon Legislative Assembly. That’s based on the unofficial results of the ballot count released by Elections Yukon after polls closed at 8 p.m. on Nov. 3. The official count is expected to be finalized on Nov. 6, according to assistant chief electoral officer Jesse Devost in an email to the media. Chief electoral officer Maxwell Harvey has described the 2025 Yukon elections as “historic” given the plebiscite vote on electoral reform, two new ridings and redrawn district boundaries, alongside the two school board elections which are being held separately later this month. During an interview with the News by phone on Nov. 4, Dixon suggested how the Yukon could look and feel different for Yukoners under a Yukon Party majority compared to the past few years led by the outgoing Yukon Liberal Party minority government. The Liberal caucus had a confidence-and-supply deal, originally struck in 2021 and reupped in 2023, with the Yukon NDP that effectively kept the Liberals in power. “Over the last four years, we’ve had a government that’s been defined by the relationship between the Liberals and the NDP through the confidence-and-supply agreement, and a Liberal government trying to implement the policies of the NDP, and a lot of confusion about who was actually in control,” Dixon said. “I think that consistency, clarity and stability is what Yukoners can expect.” After spending the past two terms as the Official Opposition, Dixon recognized the role of the Official Opposition NDP when it comes to asking questions and holding the government to account. He added that he believes the legislature can play a bigger role when it comes to scrutinizing legislation, regulations and other actions and decisions by the government. “I want to work with the legislative assembly as a whole to make some of those changes to allow for that increased level of scrutiny and transparency. And that’s going to require the Yukon Party and the NDP and the Liberal MLA to work together on some fronts.” When Dixon was first elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in 2011, he said, the Yukon Party at the time inherited a government that was on the heels of two previous Yukon Party governments. Dixon described the situation back then as having “solid public finances and a strong economy.” Dixon said that contrasts the situation his party faces now. “Today we inherit public finances that are stretched and thin, an economy that is one of the weakest in the country, and significant serious challenges facing the territory, whether it’s the housing crisis, the health-care crisis, or any number of other crises facing Yukoners,” he said. He is optimistic in the ability of his 14 MLAs to handle the challenges and navigate the decision making to “shepherd Yukon through these difficult times.” All six incumbent Yukon Party MLAs who sought re-election were re-elected: Dixon for Copperbelt North, Scott Kent for Copperbelt South, Wade Istchenko for Kluane, Brad Cathers for Lake Laberge, Patti McLeod for the redrawn riding of Watson Lake-Ross River-Faro and Yvonne Clarke for Whistle Bend North, one of two new ridings. According to the unofficial results, eight new faces will join them in the legislature: Jen Gehmair for Marsh Lake-Mount Lorne-Golden Horn, Cory Bellmore for Mayo-Tatchun, Ted Laking for Porter Creek Centre, Doris Anderson for Porter Creek North, Adam Gerle for Porter Creek South, Tyler Porter for Southern Lakes, Linda Benoit for Whistle Bend South and Laura Lang for Whitehorse West. Dixon suggested the diversity, experience and qualifications of his new and returning MLAs should give Yukoners confidence. Dixon said he will consider the options with regards to creating a new cabinet of ministers and looking at the structure of the government. That will be determined throughout the course of the transition period, per Dixon. Dixon’s swearing in ceremony, in which he officially becomes premier, has yet to be set, as of the time of the interview on the morning of Nov. 4. Dixon said he has been congratulated by Yukon NDP Leader Kate White via phone and in person by Yukon Liberal Leader and outgoing premier Mike Pemberton, who stopped by the Yukon Party election results watch party the previous evening. Pemberton came in third out of three candidates in the race for the Whitehorse West seat, which saw the Yukon Party’s Laura Lang pull through with a commanding lead. Dixon said Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office has reached out to his office. The first meeting between the premier designate and the prime minister has yet to be set, per Dixon. In addition to Pemberton, Dixon has heard from a number of other premiers, including a call from Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is among political leaders in Canada who posted congratulatory remarks on social media. Despite the Yukon NDP framing their rivals as the “Conservative Yukon Party” Dixon has repeatedly denied having “formal” ties to the Conservative Party of Canada. The territorial NDP has highlighted donations flowing from the pockets of some Yukon Party candidates to the federal party as well as some Yukon Party affiliates having campaigned for and worked for the federal party and made appearances at federal party events. In an email statement on Oct. 28 to the News, the Yukon Party claimed there is “no formal connection between the two parties” given that they don’t share fundraising with the federal party and they have separate memberships and constitutions. As reported by the News, Dixon recently acknowledged “a significant overlap in our membership with the (federal) Conservative Party, but it’s not a perfect overlap.” When speaking with reporters following his victory speech before midnight on Nov. 3, Dixon said his party is offering a change from “some combination of Liberal and NDP government, whether you characterize that as a coalition or a Liberal-NDP government, or whatever.” Dixon wouldn’t name a particular policy initiative that will be the first for his government to see through. “That’s not going to be a decision that I make on my own,” he said. “It’s going to be a decision that the 14 Yukon Party MLAs will have to make, and you need to just look at our platform to see what our priorities were, and we’re going to get to work on those immediately.” Contact Dana Hatherly at dana.hatherly@yukon-news.com

Steelers And Ravens AFC North Battle Predicted After Week 9

Week 13 isn’t as fortunate for the Steelers, who will be hosting the Buffalo Bills. The Pittsburgh defense has fallen off a cliff after an elite 2024-25 season and ranks well below the Bills. The offenses are also incomparable; this loss drops the home team to 7-5. Steelers And Ravens Week 14 The Steelers will be on the road to challenge the Ravens in Week 14. It’s an important game, not just because it’s in the division, but more specifically, for tie-breakers at the end of the year. The defenses on both sides are equally pugent, but Baltimore’s elite offense gives them a huge advantage over Pittsburgh’s mediocre one. This important swing-game improves the home team to 8-5, and their opponent drops to 7-6. Steelers And Ravens Week 15 The Ravens are on the road against the Bengals in Week 15. There’s no reason to rush Burrow back this season, and even if they were still in the hunt, it’d be unlikely to see him by this point. Baltimore should keep the winning streak alive and improve to 9-5. The Steelers will look forward to hosting the Miami Dolphins after a haul of stiff competition in Week 15. The Dolphins are falling apart and are overdue for an overhaul. Pittsburgh should improve to 8-6. Steelers And Ravens Week 16 The New England Patriots will be in Baltimore for Week 16. The Patriots will present the toughest competition for the Ravens in weeks. The defensive edge easily belongs to New England, while the offensive matchup requires more projection. Baltimore currently ranks lower on the season, but is certainly the better team with Jackson at the helm. It’s a stiff test, but they would improve to 10-5. The Steelers’ tougher schedule continues in Week 16, when they go on the road to face the Detroit Lions. It’s a matchup nightmare for Pittsburgh, going up against a top-ten offense and defense. This loss puts them at 8-7. Steelers And Ravens Week 17 The Ravens’ winning streak has to come to an end at some point, and their trip to challenge the Green Bay Packers in Week 17 raises those concerns. This marks the first playoff team of yesteryear since Week Ten. The top-ten offense and defense will be matchup hell for Baltimore, who would then drop to 10-6.

“I’ve been influenced”: Hobby Lobby’s viral minimalist pot sparks shopping frenzy for holiday decorations

TikTokers have sold out a viral Hobby Lobby Christmas tree and matching pot weeks before the holiday season, and those lucky enough to find one are showing off how they style it. What is the viral Hobby Lobby pot? A ceramic pot from Hobby Lobby has gone viral after TikTokers shared their holiday decorations. Many style it by placing a small Christmas tree inside and tying a black or red ribbon around the neck of the vase. The result is a minimalist and classy Christmas decoration. The beige ceramic vase costs $27.99 and is sold out online at the time of publication, according to Hobby Lobby’s website. @evelynramoz93 I’ve been influenced 🫠@Hobby Lobby #hobbylobby #hobbylobbyfinds #christmas #christmasdecor ♬ original sound – Evelyn Many shoppers say they’ve had trouble finding the viral item in stores. One TikToker filmed herself searching every aisle of her local Hobby Lobby before leaving empty-handed. Despite the shortage, others have managed to snag the pot in stores that still have limited stock. What do shoppers think of the viral holiday decoration? In the comments of several TikToks, Hobby Lobby shoppers shared their own “hunt” stories. “My husband surprised me with a night out tonight, and I scored all of this at Hobby Lobby tonight! The vase was the last one! And the tree was a little harder to hunt down, but I finally found it on a top shelf!” one wrote. “I used velvet navy blue ribbon, LOOKS FABULOUS. I used the stems to have them droop. Looks so good,” said another. Others said they found partial success. “Just got my trees and ribbon yesterday, but didn’t find the vases,” another commented. Shoppers who aren’t able to find the pot in stores share alternatives they found to achieve the same look in TikTok comments. “I found my white pot at T.J. Maxx. I bet at home has some great options too,” one says. “I bought the red glass container, in the same section as the trees, for my container. I took the berries off the twine ‘ribbon’ and will leave it out year-round,” another writes. “Home Depot has a lot of different vases and colors. Little pricey but will have anything you are looking for,” a third suggests. The internet is chaotic—but we’ll break it down for you in one daily email. Sign up for the Daily Dot’s newsletter here.

Civilization 7's latest update brings a sweeping balance pass and a broadside of naval mechanics, while Firaxis offers Blackbeard for free as a 'special thanks' to players

Firaxis' attempt to right the ailing vessel that is Civilization VII continues, with its latest update bringing a major balance pass for all civs, plus a bunch of new systems designed to enhance oceanic play. And if you've already picked up Firaxis' latest and most divisive entry in the series, you have the opportunity to pick up history's most notorious pirate entirely for free. Creative director Ed Beach provided an overview of update 1.3.0 in a developer video, starting with that civ-focussed balance pass. Exactly one dozen civilizations are getting a rework, namely Aksum, Chola, Egypt, Great Britain, Hawaii, Maya, Mississippian, Prussia, Qing, Songhai, Spain, and finally, Persia, which has been renamed slightly to differentiate it from a new DLC Civ. While the changes vary slightly between civs, the general thrust is the same. "The majority of these adjustments are significant buffs aimed at strengthening these fan-favourite Civs," Beach explains. "We're also introducing more specific bonuses to help each Civ lean into a unique playstyle." One example is that Egypt now receives "tailored" bonuses for building settlements and districts alongside river tiles. In other words, Civ 7 is officially less in de-Nile about Egyptian history. As for those naval improvements, update 1.3.0 introduces a new building called the harbour, which according to Beach has "a base production yield and gives additional production on fishing boats" alongside forming the new spawn point for all naval units. Meanwhile, players who reach the exploration age can recruit a new seaborne unit—the Privateer. Described as the "ultimate naval raider" by Beach, Privateers aren't bound by the conventional rules of diplomacy, able to freely cross borders, pillage trade routes and attack rival military units regardless of your current affiliation. More broadly, naval combat has been overhauled. Where sea-battles were exclusively melee affairs before, with ships essentially jostling each other like wooden sumo wrestlers, the update splits naval units into melee and ranged types to make combat more strategically interesting. The oceans have also been made livelier too, scattered with shallow atolls that will bring any ship passing through them to a grinding halt, and populated with crabs and turtles that you can harvest. All these nautical changes coincide neatly with the release of Civ 7's latest civilization collection, Tides of Power. The first part of this releases today and adds two new civs, namely Tonga and the Republic of Pirates, as well as Edward Teach (aka Edward Thatch [aka Blackbeard]) as a leader. The second part will land next January, bringing Iceland and the Ottomans into the game, and Sayyida Al Hurra as a leader. Normally, these collections must be paid for. But as a "special thank you gift" for Civ 7 owners, this one can be claimed for free from today until January 5 next year. That seems like a pretty sweet deal, though I am slightly suspicious about allowing Blackbeard into my game so easily. It sounds like the kind of ruse the dastardly pirate himself would pull, and only too late do you discover that he's sailed back into the uncharted waters of the Internet with your credit card number. In any case, update 1.3.0 provides a welcome array of additions. I think it's unlikely the update will make a huge difference to the sequel's general perception, but bigger changes are afoot. In the coming months, Firaxis plans to add a more traditional alternative to its controversial age transition mechanic, one that will let players guide one civilization from the start of a game to its end and stands a better chance of salvaging the strategy game's rep.

Alien Invasion Imminent? 3I/ATLAS Shows 'Engine Driven Propulsion System' Signs

Astronomers are baffled by 3I/ATLAS, a newly discovered interstellar object that appears to be defying the basic laws of celestial motion. Instead of drifting naturally through space, the mysterious body is exhibiting non-gravitational acceleration — behaviour some researchers suggest could indicate an engine-driven propulsion system. The visitor has reignited debate over whether such anomalies might point to artificial or alien origin, echoing the controversy that once surrounded ʻOumuamua. While most experts insist there's no evidence of extraterrestrial intent, the object's unexplained speed and trajectory are forcing scientists to reconsider what might truly be moving between the stars. A Rare Interstellar Discovery The ATLAS telescope network confirmed detection of the object, officially named C/2025 N1 (ATLAS), on 1 July 2025 from its observatory in Rio Hurtado, Chile. Astronomers quickly classified it as the third confirmed interstellar body, following ʻOumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019. Unlike a typical comet or asteroid, 3I/ATLAS follows a hyperbolic, unbound trajectory, meaning it originated beyond the Solar System and will never return once it exits. Its peculiar retrograde orbit, nearly aligned with the ecliptic plane, also caught the attention of researchers. Loeb's Hypothesis: Signs of Engine-Like Propulsion A yet-to-be-reviewed paper led by Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb proposes that the object's sudden brightening and acceleration might not stem from natural outgassing. The paper contends that 3I/ATLAS follows a hyperbolic (unbound) orbit, consistent with an interstellar trajectory. Loeb's team suggests that it could involve an active propulsion mechanism—possibly evidence of artificial design. Their analysis shows that 3I/ATLAS's speed increased, despite no visible gas or dust tail, which strengthens the argument for an engine-driven system rather than solar heating. Loeb's team further noted that the object's retrograde orbit, inclined only a few degrees from the ecliptic plane, would be statistically improbable for a random natural body, according to their arXiv preprint. Adding intrigue, the object reportedly displayed non-gravitational acceleration and a sudden brightening near perihelion, which the team suggested might be caused by an engine-like propulsion system, not by normal cometary outgassing, according to the New York Post. In a particularly striking observation, Loeb's co-authors said that if 3I/ATLAS approaches the Sun without forming a large gas cloud, the case for a propelled object would strengthen. What Mainstream Scientists Say Despite the attention-grabbing headlines, most astronomers urge caution. A report from Live Science described Loeb's claims as 'controversial,' noting that while 3I/ATLAS exhibits strange characteristics, no evidence confirms it is an alien craft. Similarly, The Economic Times reported that there is 'no imminent threat' of alien invasion, quoting scientists who said there is no sign of any deliberate extraterrestrial activity. In short, the consensus in the scientific community remains that 3I/ATLAS is most likely a natural interstellar comet, albeit one that challenges existing models. Could This Mean An Invasion Is Coming? For those asking whether this could herald an alien approach, experts say the evidence does not support that conclusion. Observations indicate that the object will not pass near Earth, with its closest approach estimated at 1.8 astronomical units, ensuring it remains safely distant from our planet, according to The Economic Times. Moreover, no radio signals, controlled movements or propulsion signatures have been independently confirmed. The Harvard paper remains a hypothesis, not a peer-reviewed finding, according to a report by The New York Post. Even if 3I/ATLAS were somehow artificial, Loeb's own references to the 'dark forest hypothesis'--the idea that alien civilisations might conceal themselves or act defensively--remain purely speculative, according to arXiv. Next Steps For Researchers and Public Astronomers plan to continue observing 3I/ATLAS's coma composition, dust tail and trajectory as it exits the solar system. Instruments aboard solar-orbiting spacecraft may also capture additional data, according to updates on arXiv. For science communicators, the case of 3I/ATLAS underscores the challenge of striking a balance between evidence and imagination. Reporting responsibly means acknowledging both the excitement of discovery and the limits of current data. A Public Fascination with the Unknown Despite scientific caution, the object has captured global imagination. Amateur astronomers, researchers, and students are tracking its path using public telescope data from Chile, Hawaii, and the Canary Islands. NASA and ESA will continue to study its dust tail, spectral composition, and motion as it exits the Solar System. For many, 3I/ATLAS symbolises humanity's enduring curiosity — a reminder that the boundary between science and wonder often blurs when the cosmos delivers something truly mysterious. Coca-Cola slammed for ‘disgusting’ AI Christmas advert - ‘supposed to have heart’

Coca-Cola has used AI for its Xmas ad again. The Holidays are Coming clip was made with Generative AI. But viewers are not happy with Coca-Cola’s decision. For the second year running, Coca-Cola has given its iconic ‘Holidays Are Coming’ advert an AI twist. The advert first debuted back in 1995 and has been used plenty of times in the decades since. Having fallen out of use in the early part of the 21st century, it was revived in 2007. Last year, Coca-Cola gave the iconic advert a generative AI make-over and despite backlash has used it again for the 2025 commercial. The Verge reports that the soft-drink giant is doubling down this year, having teamed up with Silverside and Secret Level for the advert. Sign up for our daily national newsletter - in your inbox Mon-Fri The company’s Chief Marketing Officer, Manolo Arroyo, told The Wall Street Journal that its new Christmas campaign was cheaper and speedier to make. Claiming it can be done “in a around a month”. Running for around a minute, the advert features the iconic red trucks on a globe-trotting journey in a surreal world of anthropomorphic animals. Bunny rabbits in bobble hats floating in a boat down a river, meerkats drinking from bottles of coke. Reacting to the advert on social media, people have slammed Coca-Cola for the AI advert. One wrote: “And surprise surprise it still looks horrendous. A company that earn 47 billion in revenue in 2024 can't be a**** to pay a few million to a team of talented artists? It's not 'pushing the envelope', it's greed.” Another wrote: “This is disgusting. you’re a multiBILLION dollar company. Pay REAL animators.” One echoed: “Embarrassing, Christmas ads are supposed to have heart and personality and make you feel things.” A person said: “I feel like the essence of Christmas is not there.” One added: “It amazes me how they try to recapture the magic of their iconic commercial from the past & instead rehash it so poorly.” Speaking about the advert, Pratik Thakar, global vp and head of generative AI at Coca-Cola, told The Hollywood Reporter: “Last year people criticized the craftsmanship. But this year the craftsmanship is ten times better.” He continued: “There will be people who criticize — we cannot keep everyone 100 percent happy. But if the majority of consumers see it in a positive way it’s worth going forward.” Thakar concluded: “A lot of the people complaining last year were from the creative industry who were just afraid — afraid for their jobs, afraid for what it did. But I think the spot tested really well and average people really enjoyed it.” John Lewis has released its own Christmas advert for 2025 - and it had viewers ‘bawling their eyes out’ over breakfast. See how it compares to all of their previous efforts from 2007 to now.

Erika Kirk reveals Sinclair reached out to broker personal apology from Jimmy Kimmel

Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk, has revealed that representatives from Sinclair Broadcasting Group offered her a personal apology from Jimmy Kimmel after the late-night host’s show was suspended over his comments about Charlie’s assassination. Kirk, 36, said Sinclair TV executives asked how they could make it right after Kimmel’s remarks on his ABC show drew widespread criticism. “Jimmy Kimmel lied about your husband’s murder and didn’t really apologize, what would you say to Jimmy Kimmel?” Fox News host Jesse Watters asked Kirk in an excerpt of an interview released Tuesday. “Same thing I told Sinclair,” Kirk replied. “They asked, I haven’t really told anybody this, so they asked, ‘do you want Jimmy to give you an apology? Do you want to be on a show? How can we make it right?’” “Through our team, I responded, I said, tell them thank you, we received their note. This is not our issue, not our mess. If you want to say I’m sorry to someone who’s grieving, go right ahead. But if that’s not in your heart, don’t do it. I don’t want it. I don’t need it.” Watters’ full interview with Kirk, who is now head of conservative organization Turning Point USA following her husband’s death, is set to air Wednesday on Jesse Watters Primetime. Charlie, a podcaster known for his right-wing beliefs, was shot and killed while speaking during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on September 10. He was 31. Kimmel was suspended by ABC in September after he criticized President Donald Trump and his supporters for their response to Charlie’s killing. His suspension sparked outrage throughout the country and fears over censorship. ABC affiliate owners Nexstar and Sinclair, which operates 38 local ABC affiliates and has a reputation for broadcasting conservative viewpoints, made public statements slamming Kimmel’s comments and vowed to get the show off the air. At the time, Sinclair also called for Kimmel to apologize to Charlie’s family and make a “meaningful personal donation” to Turning Point USA. Sinclair didn’t immediately return The Independent’s request for comment. A week after the show was cancelled, Kimmel returned to air and addressed the suspension as well as his original comments. "I posted a message on Instagram on the day he was killed, sending love to his family and asking for compassion,” Kimmel said on his first episode back, which was watched by 6.3 million viewers. “And I meant it. I still do. Nor was it my intention to blame any specific group for the actions of what, it was obviously a deeply disturbed individual. That was really the opposite of the point I was trying to make. “But I understand that to some that felt either ill-timed or unclear or maybe both. And for those who think I did, point a finger, I get why you’re upset. If the situation was reversed, there’s a good chance I’d have felt the same way.”
