Believe it or not, this isn’t a Tokyo vending machine – It’s a secret door to deliciousness

Hundreds of people must walk right past this “vending machine” every day without ever suspecting what it really is. Japan is often called the vending machine capital of the world, and so the drink dispensers tend to blend into the urban landscape of Japan’s capital, Tokyo. And yet, this one caught our eye while we were out and about in the Ameya Yokocho, a.k.a. Ameyoko, section of Tokyo’s Ueno neighborhood. At first glance, it looks like a million other Coca-Cola vending machines you might come across in Japan. Step up for a closer look, though, and you’ll start to notice some unusual elements, and not just that the machine’s casing is covered in stickers. For starters, the products might look like legitimate drinks brands, but none of them are. Think those are bottles of Coca-Cola? Nope. The labels actually say “Ueno Yariki.” Other bizzarre beverages in the show case include Hagetake (“Baldness”) tea instead of Coca-Cola Japan’s Ayataka, and instead of Emerald Mountain canned coffee, there’s Kyonyuu (“Giant Boobs”) Mountain. Being the intrepid/self-sacrificing food and beverage journalists we are, you might have expected us to buy some of these suspicious drinks for taste-testing. However, when we looked for the coin slot… …what we found instead was a handle, and when we pulled on it, instead of anything to drink… …we found a stairway. It took a second for our brains to register and accept what had just happened, and even once they did, we were still plenty confused. Where did this stairway go? Not knowing what was waiting for us at the top, we climbed the steps and came to this translucent curtain. Had we stumbled upon the secret hideout of a criminal enterprise? The headquarters of a cult? The truth, it turned out, was much less sinister and much more delicious, because we’d just passed through the hidden entrance to an American-style diner. Called The God Diner, this retro-style eatery is actually fairly new, having opened just barely one year ago. It’s actually a sister restaurant to local motsuyaki (grilled organ meat) chain Yariki, which is why that name shows up on a number of the fake drink brands in the restaurant’s disguised-as-a-vending machine door. If motsuyaki isn’t your thing, don’t worry, as The God Diner has a totally separate menu from Yariki. The focus here is on premium hamburgers, and they all looked so tasty that we had more than a little trouble picking just one. Eventually, though, we narrowed our choice down to the Chili Cheeseburger for 1,870 yen (US$12.50). This is actually pretty expensive even for a non-fast food burger in Japan, and would have cost us even more if we’d come in the evening, since The God Diner charges an addition service fee of 200 yen per person after 3 p.m. But hey, they say you get what you pay for, and in this case paying that price got us something very nice. The Chili Cheeseburger was absolutely packed. The large bun was overflowing with cheese-drizzled chili meat, and the hamburger patty itself was luxuriously thick too. As is the norm at burger cafes in Japan, The God Diner provides customers with paper wrappers to put their burgers in and make them easier to eat without making a mess. However, their Chili Cheeseburger is so packed that we decided to start off using a knife and fork instead. The quality was outstanding. Despite the presence of sliced jalapenos, the focus here is more on “spices” than “spiciness,” so instead of pummeling your mouth with heat, the piquancy is kept to a manageable level to keep your taste buds receptive as the flavors of the chili seasoning dance over them. As for why The God Diner chose to disguise its door as a vending machine, we can’t say. It definitely speaks to an understandable “Eating out should be a fun experience!” philosophy, but we can’t help wondering how many people have walked right past the “vending machine” without realizing there’s incredibly tasty food on the other side of it, even if, once you know what to look for, you can see the restaurant’s name written above and on the machine/door. But we’re just happy that now we know this place exists. Beyond Greylisting: Why Nigeria’s crypto gamble will shape its financial future

By Professor Wahab Elias and Oluwole Ololade Adeosun …Delisting is progress — but trust is the real reform Getting off the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Grey List is a genuine reform success. It deserves recognition: greylisting raised the cost of doing business, discouraged investment and signalled governance weakness. FATF’s decision to remove Nigeria from enhanced monitoring restores credibility — but it is a fragile victory. The harder work lies ahead. Crypto and digital-asset oversight now sit at the heart of that challenge. Although FATF’s Recommendation 15 on virtual assets was not one of the reasons Nigeria was greylisted, it became central to the country’s exit commitments. Nigeria’s experiment with crypto regulation has been episodic, fragmented and dominated by a security lens. To consolidate reform momentum, digital finance must be treated not as a compliance afterthought but as a test of financial sovereignty. From tolerance to ‘shadow regulation’ Between 2017 and 2020, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) tolerated crypto informally while the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) studied its classification. Then in 2021, the CBN abruptly prohibited banks from servicing exchanges — launching what became known as “shadow regulation.” A year later, the SEC released its first digital-asset guidelines and promised a sandbox regime, but no firm has yet graduated from that experiment. By 2023 the banking ban was partially lifted, though without new licences. Today, three institutions dominate the field: the CBN, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). The SEC retains the statutory title of regulator under the Investments and Securities Act 2025, but not the operational weight to make it meaningful. From a sociological standpoint, this regulatory oscillation reflects a familiar pattern — where authority is personalised and discretion replaces discipline when formal systems are weak. From a market-governance perspective, fragmentation erodes both compliance and confidence, deterring long-term capital. Trust deficit and policy reversals Since 2021, Nigeria has governed crypto through circulars, bans and quiet reversals. Banks were told to block exchanges, then told to unblock them. Telcos restricted unlicensed platforms; users countered with VPNs and offshore brokers. The approach bought time but undermined trust, pushing activity off-grid and out of reach. The result has been more volatility, capital flight and uncertainty about whether Nigeria is open for innovation or still improvising. The rise of unregulated P2P networks The most dangerous outcome is the explosion of peer-to-peer (P2P) trading. What began as a technical workaround has become the main rail for illicit finance. FATF classifies such unhosted transactions as the highest-risk corridor for money-laundering, terrorism funding and election-season slush funds. Thousands of brokers now operate through messaging apps, settling via informal bank transfers or gift-card swaps. The mix of anonymity, speed and zero oversight attracts both speculators and bad actors. Unless policy shifts before the 2027 elections, these networks could become the preferred channel for dark finance. Reducing their appeal is not censorship — it is financial hygiene. The solution is simple: make the regulated path cheaper, faster and safer than the unregulated one. ARRIP: The sandbox that stalled The Approval-in-Principle regime (ARRIP) was created to close that gap — a sandbox for innovation under supervision. In practice, it has become a holding pattern. The SEC manages it in name but lacks the resources to enforce timelines or graduate participants. Meanwhile, the CBN is preparing to launch a Digital Finance Supervision Unit next year, linking bank rails, tax reporting and prudential oversight. From an accounting-governance perspective, this could be the bridge between innovation and accountability. If successful, it could turn ARRIP from fiction into framework. If not, it will confirm that Nigeria can draft regulations faster than it can implement them. Lessons from the region South Africa’s formal registration of crypto service providers has built credibility. Kenya’s early permissiveness followed by crackdown created instability. Ghana’s cautious diplomacy built trust but slowed clarity. Nigeria risks combining the worst of all three: costs without credibility, restrictions without stability. What must change The path forward requires discipline, not invention. 1. Coordinate rather than compete: the CBN, FIRS and ONSA must work together. 2. Be transparent, not transactional: backroom directives undermine both compliance and confidence. 3. Focus on substance, not slogans: build rails for lawful digital finance while closing those that invite abuse. The public does not need another acronym. It needs a framework that works. The next frontier: Trust Nigeria’s fintech users are ingenious, but resilience is not the same as trust. Without credible oversight, innovation migrates offshore, capital flees and the naira suffers. FATF delisting has bought Nigeria time, but not immunity. The real test is whether the country can construct a regulatory architecture that is both innovative and enforceable — one that curbs illicit flows before politics weaponises them. As both sociologist and market professional, we see the next frontier not in drafting new rules but in strengthening the institutions and trust that make rules meaningful. Beyond greylisting lies a harder task: ensuring that digital finance serves Nigerians — not the shadows. Professor Wahab Elias is a Professor of Sociology at Lagos State University (LASU). His research focuses on institutions, governance and social change, particularly how regulatory systems adapt to technological and economic transitions. Mr. Oluwole Ololade Adeosun, FCS, FCA, is Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Chartwell Securities Limited. He is the 12th President of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Xi eyes deeper China-Russia ties despite ‘turbulent’ external conditions

China seeks to deepen relations with Russia despite a “turbulent” external environment, President Xi Jinping has said. Xi made the pledge to expand investment and economic relations as he met Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin in Beijing on Tuesday. China has drawn closer to Moscow since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago, despite pressure from the West. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Xi seeks to expand mutual investment with Russia, describing the enhanced ties as a “shared strategic choice” and declaring that the two countries “must maintain close coordination”. “China-Russia relations have forged ahead this year despite the turbulent external environment,” Xi told Mishustin, according to China’s Foreign Ministry. He highlighted industries, including energy, agriculture, aerospace, the digital economy and green development, where the two countries could cooperate. The two sides must maintain close coordination, upgrade our cooperation, and make new and greater contributions… pic.twitter.com/OSYhjhEr5F — Mao Ning 毛宁 (@SpoxCHN_MaoNing) November 4, 2025 Relations between Russia and China have grown steadily closer since Moscow’s invasion of its neighbouring country in February 2022. Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a “no-limits” partnership, just days before Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine. Russia has since heavily relied on China to blunt the impact of Western sanctions, with record trade between the pair and deepening energy cooperation. Bilateral commerce has, however, declined in recent months as China faces mounting pressure from the United States over trade and technology. Xi and Putin have also appeared to maintain close personal relations in recent years. The Russian president visited China in September to attend a huge military parade in Beijing to mark 80 years since the end of World War II. ‘Highly important’ For its part, the Kremlin highlighted the significance of Mishustin’s visit and the value it places on partnership with China. In advance of the trip, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stressed that Moscow considers it “highly important”. Putin said on Tuesday he has instructed his government to develop “multimodal transport and logistics centres” on the Chinese border. Similar facilities will also be built on the border with North Korea. Moscow and Pyongyang have also strengthened ties during the Russia-Ukraine war. Putin recently met North Korea’s Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui. In 2024, Russia and North Korea signed a defence pact committing each country to provide military support to the other in the event of “aggression”.

Prophet Babatunde Ephrata warns of national, global shifts in 2026 prophecy

Nigerian preacher and founder of Bible Based Centre (BBC), Prophet Babatunde Ephrata, has released his annual prophetic declaration for 2026, issuing stern warnings to Nigeria and the world at large. Delivering the message during a live broadcast titled “Prophetic Insight 2026”, the UK-based cleric cautioned that Nigeria faces a critical year marked by both danger and opportunity. According to him, “Nigeria is coming up, but there are powers who are out to bring the country down. They intend to do that by taking out Tinubu. If this president is forced out of office, Nigeria will face serious disaster.” Ephrata, known for his calm yet precise prophetic style, described 2026 as a year of “spiritual warfare and political turbulence,” stressing that unseen global forces are working to destabilize nations. “It is no longer about tribalism—it’s about the destiny of the nation,” he said. Despite his warnings, the prophet also offered what he called a divine solution for Nigeria’s recovery — agriculture. “Tell the leaders, church leaders, and business owners—agriculture is the way to success in 2026,” he declared, adding that prosperity will come to those who invest in farming and empower rural communities. On global affairs, Prophet Ephrata predicted tensions between NATO and the European Union, describing 2026 as a year when “trust will be betrayed” among world powers. He also warned of renewed terrorist activity and urged prayers for several nations including Germany, Turkey, France, the U.S., and Nigeria. Turning to social and technological issues, the prophet raised concerns about the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), predicting that “AI will break a lot of homes, as spouses will be distracted by AI-induced emotions.” He also warned that cosmetic surgery mishaps and crises of faith will rise worldwide, as many struggle with identity and belief. Back home, Ephrata called attention to the risk of severe flooding in parts of Nigeria in 2026, urging both government and religious leaders to take proactive measures. He concluded his prophecy with a call for unity and prayer: “Pray for Nigeria, for the leaders, the Church, and the business owners. The hand of God is ready to lift the nation if the people will cry out to Him.” Followers across the UK and Nigeria have since shared clips of his declaration online, describing it as one of his most detailed and urgent prophecies to date.

It’s Time To Build APIs for AI, Not Just For Developers

For the last two decades, the principles of API design have centered around the human developer. We built systems optimized for their convenience, with flexible endpoints and rich documentation that they could interpret. But a new and powerful class of consumer is already disrupting in the form of autonomous AI agents that operate on a fundamentally different set of principles, which require a new approach to the way we build and describe our services. “This means a new paradigm for us as developers: We must now build APIs optimized for consumption by machines, which requires a fundamentally different design philosophy than the one we use for human-centric development,” says Srinivasan Sekar, a director of engineering at LambdaTest, an AI-native software testing platform. This increasing shift toward an “AI-first” design philosophy prioritizes the explicit clarity and predictability that machines require to reason and act effectively. It underpins a clear framework for redesigning systems for the new agentic world. Shift From ‘Developer-First’ to ‘AI-First’ At the heart of this new manifesto is a core cultural shift that must precede any architectural changes: moving from a “developer-first” to an “AI-first” design. As Sekar explains, for years, we have optimized our APIs for the convenience of human developers. This approach favors flexibility, often resulting in fewer, multipurpose endpoints and a reliance on external documentation to clarify ambiguity. A human developer can read a guide to understand that a certain parameter is required only when another is present — a nuance we have long taken for granted. “We must now build APIs optimized for consumption by machines, which requires a fundamentally different design philosophy than the one we use for human-centric development.” — Srinivasan Sekar, director of engineering at LambdaTest AI agents, however, are fundamentally different consumers. They cannot read external documentation or infer implicit relationships between parameters. An AI operates solely on the explicit, machine-readable contract provided by the API’s schema. This, he argues, is the crux of the “AI-first” philosophy: a design approach that prioritizes the absolute, unambiguous clarity that machines require, leaving no room for interpretation in the contract. Sai Krishna, working alongside Sekar, adds a practical dimension to this shift: “At LambdaTest, we learned this the hard way. We had a perfectly functional API for configuring test environments that developers loved for its flexibility. But when AI agents started using it, we saw a 40% failure rate because the agents couldn’t interpret the implicit rules we’d documented separately. We had to completely rethink our approach.” This means favoring more specific, single-purpose endpoints and defining all constraints explicitly within the schema itself. This mindset is the non-negotiable foundation for building any successful and reliable agentic system. Unlearning the Three Habits of Human-Centric APIs Adopting this “AI-first” philosophy in practice means actively unlearning several ingrained habits of traditional, human-centric API design. Sekar identifies three common patterns that, while convenient for human developers, create critical failures when consumed by AI agents. First is the habit of overloading single endpoints with multiple behaviors. A developer can handle this flexibility, but an AI agent struggles with the ambiguity. The AI-first approach requires distinct, single-purpose endpoints where the function is explicit. Before: A single POST /user endpoint would ambiguously handle both creating and updating a user based on whether an id was present in the payload. After: The AI-first approach uses two distinct and predictable endpoints: POST /users to create a new user and PUT /users/{id} to update an existing one. Second is the reliance on implicit contracts and external documentation. For an agent to act reliably, all parameter relationships and dependencies must be explicitly declared within the machine-readable schema itself. Before: A traditional schema would list user_type and admin_level as optional, forcing a developer to read external documentation to learn their conditional relationship. After: An AI-first schema makes this relationship explicit using conditional logic, allowing a machine to understand the contract without any external context. Finally, teams must unlearn the habit of providing generic error responses. An AI-first API must provide structured, detailed error responses that allow an agent to self-correct. Before: A generic JSON response like {"message": "Bad Request"} would halt an automated workflow. After: A structured JSON error provides specific fields for the error code, message and details, indicating exactly which parameter was invalid. These shifts share the common purpose of eliminating ambiguity. By making endpoints, contracts and errors explicit, developers provide the predictable foundation necessary for autonomous agents to act reliably and effectively. The New Pillars of AI-First Design Beyond simply avoiding old habits, building an AI-first API requires embracing a new set of positive design principles centered on clarity and predictability. “This begins with semantic clarity,” says Sean Falconer, senior director of product, AI strategy at Confluent. A truly AI-native API must do more than just describe its technical function; its machine-readable contract must also describe its business purpose, its prerequisites and any potential side effects. This provides the rich context an AI agent needs to reason about not just how to use a tool, but when and why. A truly AI-native API must do more than just describe its technical function; its machine-readable contract must also describe its business purpose, its prerequisites and any potential side effects. This means developers must enrich their API schemas, moving beyond simple data types. For example, in an OpenAPI specification, every parameter and endpoint should include a detailed description that explains not just the “what” (for instance, an integer ID), but the “why” (such as the unique customer identifier used for billing and support tickets). This level of clarity is best achieved by designing what Falconer refers to as small, purpose-built tools rather than exposing large, generic API surfaces. Yoni Michael, CTO of Typedef, agrees with this principle, advocating for a “minimal surface area,” meaning the API should expose only what is absolutely essential for a given task. For architects, this translates into a clear design mandate: Resist the urge to create monolithic, all-purpose endpoints. Instead, complex business processes should be broken down into their smallest logical components, with a dedicated, constrained API designed for each one. A sprawling /orders API, for instance, could be refactored into focused, purpose-built tools like /create-order, /check-order-status and /request-refund. Creating these well-defined tools reduces ambiguity and the cognitive load on the AI, making its behavior easier to govern and evaluate. All of these principles serve a single, critical goal: achieving what Michael calls deterministic behavior. An autonomous agent cannot afford surprises when it is chaining together multiple tools to execute a complex workflow. The system must be utterly reliable and predictable. To deliver on this, engineers must prioritize rigorous testing and stateless design where possible. Every API call with the same inputs should consistently produce the same output, free from hidden dependencies or unpredictable side effects. This involves providing clear, idempotent interfaces for any operations that modify data, ensuring that repeated calls do not have unintended consequences. By building APIs with semantic clarity, a minimal surface area and a clear purpose, architects provide the foundation of trust that allows an AI agent to build upon them effectively. Hurdles of Reshaping Data for AI Even with these forward-thinking design principles in place, there is a final, deeper architectural challenge that underpins all AI-first design. Sekar from LambdaTest identifies this as the most significant hurdle of all: the difficult but necessary task of data model flattening. He explains that most existing enterprise APIs reflect deep-rooted data platform challenges, as they were designed around complex internal database schemas or nested object models. While a human developer can navigate these intricate structures, they create significant “cognitive overhead” for an AI agent. A deeply nested data structure forces an AI model to expend valuable resources simply understanding the shape of the data and the relationships between its parts before it can even begin to act on the information. This complexity introduces a high potential for error and makes the agent’s behavior less predictable. The AI-first solution is to flatten and normalize these data models, redesigning them into simpler, more predictable formats that are optimized for machine consumption. “The companies building the most reliable agentic systems aren’t necessarily the ones with the most sophisticated AI models. They’re the ones who’ve done the hard work of redesigning their API foundations to speak the language machines understand.” — Srinivasan Sekar And this is usually the most resource-intensive part of the journey to becoming AI native. Sekar argues that this task goes far beyond simply documenting existing systems. It frequently requires a fundamental redesign of the data access layer and the creation of entirely new, parallel API surfaces that are purpose-built for AI agents. Krishna shares the practical reality of this transformation: “We maintain two API layers now; our legacy developer API and our AI-optimized API. The AI version takes a test result object that was previously nested four levels deep and flattens it into a single-level structure with explicit relationship IDs. It tripled our schema size but cut agent processing time by 70%. The investment was significant, but necessary.” This ensures that the context provided to the AI is not just semantically clear, but also structurally simple and immediately useful. The Future Is a ‘Behavioral Contract’ Taken together, these principles — a cultural shift to an AI-first mindset, the unlearning of old habits and a deep architectural commitment to clarity and simple data models — form a new manifesto for API design. But the impact of this new philosophy extends beyond the initial engineering of our systems and into their entire life cycle. Sekar predicts that this will ultimately reshape core DevOps practices like API versioning. In a world where autonomous agents are the primary consumers, the focus of API management will shift from tracking simple syntax changes to guaranteeing “behavioral contracts.” The promise to the AI will no longer be just that the API’s structure is stable, but that its behavior is consistent and predictable, ensuring the same inputs always produce the expected type of outcome. Krishna elaborates on how this plays out operationally: “We’ve started versioning our behavioral contracts separately from our API versions. An agent subscribes to a behavioral contract, say, ‘search capability with pagination,’ and we guarantee that contract’s behavior even as we evolve the underlying implementation. If we need to change behavior, we introduce a new contract version, giving agents time to adapt.” Both Sekar and Krishna emphasize that this commitment to explicit, predictable and behaviorally consistent APIs is the ultimate expression of the AI-first philosophy. “The companies building the most reliable agentic systems aren’t necessarily the ones with the most sophisticated AI models,” Sekar notes. “They’re the ones who’ve done the hard work of redesigning their API foundations to speak the language machines understand.” This foundation is what the next generation of reliable agentic AI applications will be built upon.
