Grieving parents deliver "powerful" message on youth suicide at parliament meeting

Grieving parents have delivered a "powerful" message on teaching mental health lessons in schools as they met with the Scottish Government. Mike Palmer, Andy Airey and Tim Owen - who each lost a daughter to suicide - spoke to education secretary Jenny Gilruth on Thursday as they backed the Daily Record campaign Save Young Lives. The trio successfully fought for suicide prevention training to be delivered in English schools and are now calling for classrooms north of the border to follow suit. The dads are taking action in support of our campaign, which was launched this week in response to an epidemic of youth suicide. Following the meeting, Ms Gilruth said: "I am very grateful to the dads for the powerful meeting, which was a reminder of the risks of suicide and the need to open up conversations, which we know can save lives. "I have been amazed by the campaigning that they have done to raise awareness on this issue and I have been really taken by the points raised. "Around an eighth of Scotland's curriculum is supporting young people’s health and wellbeing. "It would be my expectation as Education Secretary that these topics are discussed through Personal and Social Education lessons. "I will ask that Education Scotland consider this matter again as they take forward reforms to the curriculum, which are being led by Scotland’s teachers.” Campaigner Susan Hart, who lost her 16-year-old son Jordan to suicide, told the Record the minister must make sure her actions speak louder than words. The mum, 54, said: "It's a huge step forward that the government has met with these three dads, but I hope it's clear that this mental health training in schools is needed now. "This is a national emergency and Jenny Gilruth should take action directly after the meeting to move quickly. "We can't still be waiting five years down the line. If that happens, we will lose far too many more young people." Susan's son Jordan passed away in 2020, just days before his 17th birthday. He dreamt of joining the RAF and becoming a personal trainer. But his loved ones have been left heartbroken to know those were dreams they will never get to see him achieve. The mum, from Blairgowrie, is now calling for Gilruth to meet with families impacted by youth suicide. She added: "I'd ask that Jenny meets with families across Scotland who have been devastated by suicide. "She needs to see the nightmare we are living with every day. She needs to see the pain we feel knowing we will never see or hold our children again. "She needs to understand that we need help to try to prevent other families from having to go through this." Campaigning dad Mike, who lost his 17-year-old daughter Beth in the same year Jordan died, travelled from his home in Manchester for the meeting. He added: "Now that we have met with Jenny, we hope she understand the Scottish Government can do better. "They need to take action now and get in line with the changes that have already been made in schools in England. "I have met so many families up and down Scotland that are dealing with this nightmare every day and will be for the rest of their lives. "As parents who have been impacted by suicide, I don't think that we are asking for too much. "So while we thank Jenny for the time she spent with us, we hope that she will keep to the promise that she will look into how to do this and come back to us with positive news." Mike started the Three Dads Walking group alongside Andy and Tim after the three bonded over the loss of their daughters. Together, they have been fundraising and spreading awareness on youth suicide for the last four years across the UK. The Daily Record launched its Save Young Lives campaign on Thursday after we a series of articles on the number of young people dying due to suicide sparked a fresh debate on how to prevent more tragedies. We make three key demands: The most recent statistics show that 26 per cent of deaths among young Scots are by probable suicide. Yet thousands of kids in crisis are languishing on mental health waiting lists - some for years - despite our government’s promise they should be seen within 18 weeks of referral. The last recorded data on youth deaths in Scotland from 2023 shows that of the 304 young people who died, 79 deaths were caused by probable suicide. The latest statistics from Public Health Scotland show thousands of children are being referred to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) every year. The Scottish Government’s waiting list target pledge states that 90 per cent of children and young people should start treatment within 18 weeks of referral to CAMHS, but in August we reported that a Freedom of Information request to NHS health boards found some young people waited more than 1000 days for support. A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “Every suicide death is a tragedy, and our heartfelt sympathies go out to all those affected. Our aim is for anyone at risk or affected by suicide to get the help they need. “Schools are encouraged to consult with children and young people to ensure learning meets their needs, and to integrate support for positive mental wellbeing across the curriculum. “We are making good progress on waiting times across the country - CAMHS has met its 18-week treatment standard for three quarters running." For confidential support, Samaritans can be contacted for free around the clock 365 days a year on 116 123.

Fury as council chief executives to pocket pay hikes of up to 23% after cuts to services

Council chief executives are in line for massive pay hikes of up to 23% despite huge pressure on local government funding. The average rise for bosses will be around £19,000 compared to workers who received a 4% boost to their pay packets . STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer said: “COSLA’s decision to award top bosses above inflation pay rises is deeply flawed and will quite rightly create a huge backlash from workers and the public they serve. “Staff and service users across the country are facing cuts to services, continued low pay and increasing cost of living pressures. It is simply rubbing salt into the wounds of ordinary workers who yet again can see that when it comes to pay it’s one rule for the bosses and another rule for everyone else.” Local authorities have called for extra funding from the SNP Government amid claims of tight settlements. Council tax also rose by an average 9.5% in order to help town halls deliver lifeline services. It has now emerged that council umbrella group COSLA has accepted the recommendations of an independent review into CEO pay. COSLA had asked an expert to rethink a pay structure critics claimed was out of date and damaging recruitment. The option backed by the review team, and endorsed by COSLA, would add around £611,113 to the chief executive pay bill. The review report estimated that the average salary rise for the 32 CEOs would be £19,097, amounting to an average hike of 12.47%. The report added that individual chief executives would receive salary rises of between £4,380 and £32,334, working out at percentage rises of between 2.01% and 23.44%. Chief executives, who are already on six figure salaries, will see their rise being phased in over two stages. Keir Greenaway, senior organiser at the GMB trade union, said: “Pay rises of this size for those at the very top are a slap in the face to our members after being repeatedly told budgets are stretched to breaking point. "It is only the latest example of one rule for the frontline workers actually delivering our public services and another for those who could not be further from the frontline. “Given the years of austerity and relentless cuts to council services, it is hard to see how money can be found to boost the highest wages while services are falling apart and rises for those delivering them pale in comparison.” Graham McNab, lead officer for local government trade union Unite, said: "There is something seriously wrong when low paid local government workers have to fight inch by inch to get a fair pay award every year from COSLA for the vital services they provide to the people of Scotland. “It's disgraceful that COSLA willingly offer eye-watering pay rises to council chief executives who are already on exorbitant salaries. COSLA are quick off the mark to say that low-ball offers to local government workers are fair every year, so how can they even begin to justify paying chief executives three times higher than what they gave nursery nurses, cleaners, school assistants and refuse workers? “It's utterly hypocritical and our members won't forget this when pay negotiations start again." A COSLA spokesperson said: “Across Scotland, council Chief Executives, as Heads of the Paid Service, are accountable for the delivery of hundreds of diverse and vital public services. Tens of thousands of citizens across local areas rely on these every single day – from education and childcare, housing, social work and care, to roads and transport, waste and recycling, and leisure and culture. “On 31st October, COSLA Leaders considered an independent report on Chief Executive remuneration. This was jointly commissioned by COSLA and the ALACE Trade Union in line with a collective agreement made in 2010 that a review would take place. “It was agreed that an updated pay framework will be implemented based on the independent recommendations. “The new pay framework will help Local Government attract and retain the leadership we require to deliver for Scotland's people and our communities, and meet the challenges we face now and into the future.” Tory MSP Craig Hoy said: “Scots who have been clobbered by huge hikes in their council tax bills will be appalled by the prospect of top bosses getting inflation-busting pay rises. “After years of suffering savage cuts from the SNP, councils should be doing everything they can to deliver value for the taxpayer and protecting vital services. “Rubber stamping these pay deals completely flies in the face of that.” To sign up to the Daily Record Politics newsletter, click here

Sonam Khan Recalls Shooting First Bikini Scene With Rishi Kapoor: 'Was Made To Feel Extremely...'

Actress Sonam Khan has opened up about a memorable moment from her early career days when she shot her first-ever bikini scene, and that too opposite Rishi Kapoor. Sonam Khan, who worked with the late superstar in Yash Chopra’s Vijay, reveals that while she was nervous, Yash Chopra and Rishi Kapoor ensured that the shoot went well. Sharing the video, Sonam Khan wrote, “Reflecting on my first day of shooting for Vijay… I was quite nervous. It was my first time facing the camera, and I was wearing a bikini for the scene, which was shot on Madh Island. Thankfully, everything went well, thanks to Yash ji and Rishi Kapoor Sir.” Have a look here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sonam Khan (@sonamkhan_72) She added, “Maybe I will get trolled for sharing this reel or maybe not, but I don’t mind, as I was working to support my parents. I was indeed a very brave girl to do my first shoot, especially in a bikini. When I saw this reel today, I just patted myself on the back for being who I was then and who I am today—completely and unapologetically myself. Whether people judge me or not is their prerogative! My parents and the Almighty above know it all, and that is what I care about.” The video features Sonam Khan looking stunning in a red bikini as she lies on the beach in water with Rishi Kapoor in a romantic scene. In the clip, Rishi’s character notices her heartbeat racing and asks her about it, to which Sonam responds, “Dhadak nahi raha hai, kuch keh raha hai. Suno kya keh raha hai.” The clip also stirred nostalgia in the hearts of Vijay fans. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sonam Khan (@sonamkhan_72) Last month, Sonam had shared a clip of her bikini beach run from the film. “Coming back to the scene, whenever Yash ji said ‘cut’ after a take, my hairstylist would come running towards me with my dressing gown. I was made to feel extremely comfortable, all thanks to Yash ji and Rishi Kapoor Sir, as both had instructed my hairstylist to do the above. They had so much class and dignity. And so, with this exact scene, my journey in the Indian movie industry began,” the actress had written.

Why Suryakumar Yadav Shouted At Shivam Dube During 4th T20I Against Australia

Known for his affable personality, Suryakumar Yadav on Thursday lost his temper at India teammate Shivam Dube during the fourth T20I against Australia at the Carrara Oval in Queensland. Surya gave the all-rounder a piece of his mind after gifting a boundary to Marcus Stoinis. The incident occurred after the final delivery of the 12th over as Dube bowled a short delivery to Stoinis and allowed the new batter to free his arm as he swatted the ball away for a four over backward point. This broke a sequence of three fine deliveries from the medium pacer who had conceded a six off the second delivery to Tim David before removing the danger man off the next. Dube followed that with a couple of dot deliveries in what was a crucial phase of the contest where India had set Australia 168 to win. Surya was seen shouting at Dube while venting his frustration at the poor delivery. The over ended as Dube took an important wicket but also conceded 11 runs with Australia 95/4 in 12 overs and needing 73 runs to win off 48 balls. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 119 in 18.2 overs with Washington Sundar taking three wickets in eight deliveries while Axar Patel and Shivam Dube finishing with two wickets each. India won the contest by 48 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. With the opening match of the series being washed out due to rain, India now have an unbeatable lead going into the final match of their white-ball tour of Australia. “167 on this ground is definitely a good score because the quality bowling we have, the spinners, the fast bowlers…I trust them and the whole team trust our bowlers,” Dube told reporters after the match. “Definitely it’s a T20 game and any of the batter can come and smack but on this ground where the side boundaries are big, we had planned it very nicely and we had confidence that we can stop them,” he added. The fifth T20I will be played at The Gabba in Brisbane On Saturday.

Shefali Shah On 8-Hour Shift Debate In Bollywood: ‘Male Actors Come Late...’

Shefali Shah has expressed her views on the ongoing eight-hour shift demand in Bollywood. In a recent interview, the actress, who is gearing up for the release of Delhi Crimes 3, shared that the discussion regarding long shift hours in Bollywood was much needed. “We are reasonable people. So, we realise [the need to accommodate] if a location is not available tomorrow or something has to be done now. But it can’t be the norm,” she told Mid-Day. “I take one-and-a-half hours to reach the set and the same time to return. For those hours on set, I give it my all. I go back home, and hopefully, I can go to the gym because that’s part of my job. Then I will shower, eat, go back to the script, and then wake up the next morning for another day of work. How many hours of sleep am I getting? And how are you expecting me to come with my A-game?” Shah added. Shefali mentioned that with the long work hours, it is not just the actor who suffers but also the crew. “On one of the last films I shot for, which had a 10-hour schedule, some of the ADs said, ‘Thank God, she leaves because that way we get to go.’ The rest of the crew doesn’t get paid extra [for the overtime]. Is it fair to them?” she shared. Shefali further took a dig at the male actors who arrive late for the shoot and added, “We [female actors] are talking about eight hours and 10 hours contractually, but have we even accounted for the number of hours some male actors come late? That’s not even considered!” For the unversed, the work-life balance in Bollywood started after Sandeep Reddy Vanga removed Deepika Padukone from Prabhas starrer Spirit earlier this year. Reports suggest that her demands, including eight-hour workdays, a high salary, and a share in the film’s profits, did not sit well with director Vanga. Deepika, a new mother, is reportedly seeking to balance her work and personal life by reducing her working hours. Several celebrities, including Vikrant Massey, Rashmika Mandanna, Yami Gautam and Anurag Basu, have come out in support of Deepika amid the ongoing discussion. “Today, the whole country is debating about flexible hours, but that is for discussion amongst the teams and figuring out what works for them. It’s their personal choices,” Rashmika said recently during an interview with Mojo Story.

Jury awarded $118 million in damages to 7 victims of 2020 Watson Grinding explosion

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- On Thursday, a Harris County jury awarded $118 million in damages to seven victims of the Watson Grinding explosion. The explosion at the Watson Grinding plant on Gessner near Clay in January 2020 damaged hundreds of homes, killed three people, and injured more than a dozen. "I was blown into a standing position out of my bed," Alicia Detamore, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, said. Detamore and her roommate, Suzanne Slavinsky, were forced to leave their home for over a year. The blast was later traced to a loose hose leaking propylene, which the U.S. Chemical Safety Board said ignited when a Watson Grinding employee flipped a light switch. Investigators say the plant's gas detection system never sounded, which is why attorneys sued 3M, the company responsible for inspecting it. They say a 3M technician gave the gas detection system the all-clear just six months before the explosion. "What you've done is you've slapped a sticker on it. You said that it's good to go and it was never good to go," attorney Ryan Loya said. Attorneys say a red 'out of service' tag should have been placed on the gas detection system, alerting plant employees that the system wasn't functioning. "Such a simple job as to seeing it's not working and all you have to do is put a red tag on it? And you could have saved all of this. Our worlds will never be the same," Slavinsky said. One woman was left with long-term brain damage. Slavinsky and Detamore say they suffer from PTSD. "How many companies across the country are relying on them to make things safe, and right now, are they safe?" Detamore said. 3M sent Eyewitness News the following statement: "We disagree with the verdict in this case and believe that it is unsupported by the evidence and the law. We will be appealing." However, attorneys say the evidence shows 3M's technician didn't act in a reasonable manner. "He sat on the stand," attorney Robert Kwok said. "He wouldn't make any kind of eye contact with the jury. He would just look down and he seemed pretty defeated in his testimony."

KBVO Game of the Week: Weiss hands Anderson first loss of the season in finale 28-7

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Anderson's bid for an undefeated regular season was spoiled by a hungry Weiss squad Thursday night at The Pfield in Pflugerville. The Wolves upset the eighth-ranked Trojans 28-7 behind four touchdown passes from sophomore Jaxon Schad, three of which went to his older brother Dallas Schad. Weiss bounced back from a 35-31 loss to College Station last week. A win over the Cougars would have set up Thursday's showdown as one for a share of the District 12-5A1 championship, but the Wolves stubbed their toe. They didn't on Thursday, however. Up 21-7 with less than five minutes left in the game, Weiss iced the ballgame with a 79-yard pass from Jaxon Schad to Tre Moore. It was the only touchdown for the Wolves not scored by two Schads. The Jaxon-Dallas connection accounted for the others. The first came early in the second quarter on an 8-yard pass, and the second was just before the halftime horn. Jaxon had to escape a collapsing pocket, and after he squirted away from the Anderson pass rush, he zipped a 19-yard pass toward the end zone that Dallas jumped up to snag. Weiss led 14-0 at halftime. The duo found each other again with 7:40 left in the game. Jaxon laid a ball up near the front left corner of the end zone, and Dallas ran underneath it with a sliding grab, dragging his toe behind him to make it a legal catch. The 18-yard score was set up by perhaps the most exciting play of the night, a 58-yard run by Elijah Jasper that had the look of a negative play when it began. Jasper broke four Anderson tackles just to make it beyond the line of scrimmage, and then he rumbled down the sideline for a huge play to set up the Wolves' final touchdown of the game. Weiss (8-2, 5-2) finished fourth in the district and will take on La Porte, the District 11-5A1 champion, in the bi-district round of the playoffs. A date and time for the game have yet to be announced. Anderson (9-1, 7-1) will, at worst, share the district title with A&M Consolidated. The Tigers play Lockhart on Friday. It's the second time in school history the Trojans have won at least a share of the district championship. They'll have the top seed out of the district to the bi-district round, and they'll play Friendswood at 3 p.m. Saturday at House Park.

Rising geopolitical tensions are also lending support. Technically, gold’s key make-or-break level stands at $3,855, while silver is defending the $46.70 support zone.” What Factors Affect Gold Prices In India? International market rates, import duties, taxes, and fluctuations in exchange rates primarily influence gold prices in India. Together, these factors determine the daily gold rates across the country. In India, gold is deeply cultural and financial. It is a preferred investment option and is key to celebrations, particularly weddings and festivals. With constantly changing market conditions, investors and traders monitor fluctuations closely. Staying updated is crucial for effectively navigating dynamic trends. (With inputs from agencies)
