Putin's 'seal', a scared police inspector and the two-year operation against the Mallorca drugs organisation

The two-year Guardia Civil-National Police operation to take down one of the most significant drugs organisations ever known in Mallorca netted 687 kilos of cocaine, 2,500 kilos of hashish, 1.5 million euros cash and sixteen weapons. Seventy-six people have been arrested; more than half of them are in pre-trial detention. With the court secrecy order having been lifted, plenty of detail has been emerging. Much of the evidence against the leaders of the organisation - lawyer Gonzalo Márquez and the head of the United Tribuns bikers, Stefan Milojevic - has come from intercepted phone conversations. These conversations include various references to Faustino Nogales, the former National Police chief of one the force's narcotics squads. Like Márquez and Milojevic, he was arrested on August 11 in what turned out to be just one of a series of police actions, the most recent of which was last week. The relationship with Nogales is revealed in these conversations. On May 21 this year, Márquez told Milojevic: "The other guy is scared stiff." He then added: "Faustino, I don't know to what extent he's been a good recruit. He didn't want to be a group leader of anything, but he's not leaving either." Nogales also cropped up in a conversation in which Milojevic discussed the possibility that a tracking device could have been placed in his car - Milojevic had in fact taken the car to a trusted mechanic to check for devices; none were found. This was at the end of March this year, and the pair regretted the fact that Nogales was no longer a member of the narcotics squad. Milojevic said: "Do you know what I told him? I told him, Faus, isn't there a single guy who ...? With how corrupt you all are, I told him, isn't there anyone who can be paid off?" Márquez replied: "They're a bunch of criminals, and he's the first one." He added that he couldn't stand Nogales and that he disliked him more every day. To this, and in reference to the inspector's previous unit, Milojevic responded: "The problem is that when he was there, he was useful." Milojevic knew that he was being investigated, as was his brother. That information was allegedly supplied by Nogales and was given just ahead of the August 11 raids. Milojevic intended to get off the island and drive to Austria. He knew he was being investigated but was unsure about members of the organisation. Palma Port police officer Ángel L., one of his most trusted associates, was aware of the role Nogales played in the organisation and asked Milojevic if Nogales had informed him of "any news". In a different conversation, Márquez referred to a Vox deputy mayor being "a very good friend" of his. The conversation does not specify anything further about who this deputy mayor was. For the organisation's drugs activities, there was what amounted to a catalogue of different drugs, their prices and their quality. This was where the cocaine with the Putin seal fitted in; it was the best. Staggering quantities of drugs were sold. Ramón Orta of the Orta clan was arrested last week. His clan purchased 194 kilos of cocaine worth approximately four million euros.

Lorraine Kelly is live on STV to celebrate another incredible year of fundraising for the STV Children’s Appeal

STV is set to air a special programme on Friday live from its Pacific Quay headquarters in Glasgow, which will highlight and celebrate the work of its charity, the STV Children’s Appeal, throughout 2025. TV legend Lorraine Kelly – an STV Children’s Appeal trustee since its inception – will host the programme and meet a variety of people who have either supported the Appeal or benefited from its work over the past year. Ahead of the show, Lorraine was pictured donning a kilt and scarf designed in a unique tartan print by Paisley-based family business, Houston Kiltmakers. The official STV Children’s Appeal tartan features the charity’s pink, yellow and blue colour palette and was created by the firm earlier this year to help raise money for the Appeal. Kelly said: “Celebrating all the fundraisers and projects involved in the STV Children’s Appeal is always one of the highlights of my year – and this year will be extra special, as I’m heading to Scotland to present the Appeal Show live from STV HQ. “I’m looking forward to meeting more incredible people from across the country, hearing their inspiring stories and learning what the work of the STV Children’s Appeal means to them. “Every year we’re reminded that the Appeal makes an enormous difference to so many families and communities across Scotland, and it can only do that with the generous – and never taken-for-granted – donations of our lovely STV viewers.” The STV Children’s Appeal – which is supported by the Scottish Government, The Wood Foundation, a range of businesses and STV viewers – works with a range of charities across Scotland. Friday’s show will put the spotlight on three different projects that have received support this year: Dundee Bairns, which helps children living in poverty in Dundee; TCCL, which provides support to families with children who suffer from cancer or leukaemia in Tayside and north-east Fife; and Happy Place Workshop, which travels the country providing a safe space for children to express their emotions through art and music. The latter project was set up by Glasgow pop duo SAINT PHNX – made up of brothers Alan and Stevie Jukes – and takes inspiration from the lyrics of their song “Happy Place”, which are rooted in the band’s personal experience of loss and healing. SAINT PHNX will be in the studio with Lorraine to discuss the work of Happy Place Workshop, before being joined by chart-topping singer Nathan Evans for an exclusive performance. The Appeal Show will also hear from STV presenters Sean Batty and Laura Boyd, who recently took part in an epic fundraising challenge on the Isle of Mull. The Scottish Government has been a supporter of the STV Children’s Appeal since its inception in 2011, providing up to £1m of match funding annually, and First Minister John Swinney will appear on the programme to acknowledge the important work of projects supported by the Appeal. Viewers inspired by this year’s Appeal Show will be encouraged to donate to help young people and families across the country. Every penny raised on the night remains in Scotland and 100% of donations go to those who need it most. Administration costs are covered by STV and by a portion of The Wood Foundation’s donation to the Appeal. The Wood Foundation has partnered with the Appeal since 2013, donating over £1.8m to date. The STV Children’s Appeal has raised over £37m for children and families affected by poverty in Scotland since its formation in 2011. Deadly Typhoon Kalmaegi ravages Vietnam, Philippines

Typhoon Kalmaegi churned across Vietnam Friday, claiming five more lives after its devastating passage through the Philippines where the death toll rose to 188. Kalmaegi unleashed record rainfall and flooding in the central Philippines this week -- sweeping away cars, trucks and shipping containers before lashing Vietnam late Thursday. "The roof of my house was just blown away," said Nguyen Van Tam, a 42-year-old fisherman in Vietnam's Gia Lai province, where the storm made landfall packing sustained winds of up to 149 kilometres (92 miles) per hour, according to the environment ministry. "We were all safe, (but) the typhoon was really terrible, so many trees fallen," he said, adding that his boat had survived intact. Vietnamese authorities were still assessing the damage on Friday morning, but the environment ministry reported five dead, and 57 houses collapsed in Gia Lai and neighbouring Dak Lak. Nearly 3,000 more had their roofs blown off or were damaged, it said, while 11 boats or ships sank. In the streets along Gia Lai's Quy Nhon beach, AFP journalists saw rescue workers and soldiers working with residents to clear uprooted trees, remove debris and collect sheet-metal roofs blown away in the night. "This was a very big typhoon that hit us," Tran Ngo An, 64, told AFP. "This was the second time I witnessed such a typhoon. The other one was 10 years ago or so, but not that strong as compared to this." The state power company said 1.6 million clients lost electricity as the typhoon smashed the central coast, but service to a third of them had been restored by Friday morning. Vietnam is in one of the most active tropical cyclone regions on Earth and is typically affected by 10 typhoons or storms a year, but Kalmaegi was the 13th of 2025. Scientists warn that storms are becoming more powerful due to human-driven climate change. Warmer oceans allow typhoons to strengthen rapidly, and a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, meaning heavier rainfall. Fast-moving Kalmaegi had already swept northwest toward Laos by morning with significantly weakened winds, but heavy rain was still forecast for much of Vietnam's central coast, the national weather bureau said. The storm was next forecast to hit Thailand, which issued a warning Friday for heavy rainfall and flooding starting in the northeast but spreading to the rest of the country. - Relentless rains - Kalmaegi had initially battered the islands of Cebu and Negros in the Philippines before swooping back out to sea. Floodwaters described as unprecedented rushed through the hardest hit Cebu province's towns and cities, where the hunt for missing people continues. Philippines authorities raised the death toll to 188, with 135 still missing. The typhoon hit central Vietnam as it was still reeling from more than a week of flooding and record rains that killed at least 47 people and submerged centuries-old historic sites. The heavy rains starting in late October had drenched the former imperial capital Hue and the ancient town of Hoi An, both UNESCO-listed sites, turning streets into canals and flooding tens of thousands of homes. Up to 1.7 metres (5 feet 6 inches) fell over one 24-hour period in a downpour breaking national records. With more than 3,200 kilometres of coastline and a network of 2,300 rivers, Vietnam faces a high risk of flooding. Before Kalmaegi, natural disasters had already left 279 people dead or missing this year and caused more than $2 billion in damage, according to Vietnam's national statistics office. tmh-tym/sjc/jm

Brighton’s campaign has yielded mixed results so far, with wins over Chelsea and Newcastle in stark contrast to a defeat by Everton and a draw with struggling Wolves. Crystal Palace vs Brighton is scheduled for a 2pm GMT kick-off on Sunday, November 9, 2025. The match will take place at Selhurst Park in south London. Gen Z least humble about their cooking skills - despite knowing fewest recipes

A poll of 2,000 adults explored their culinary aptitude and found the average person can cook 14 dishes with a recipe, or nine without. But this dropped to 10 and five respectively for Gen Z. However, when asked to rate their own cooking skills, the highest percentage to label themselves as ‘excellent’ were Gen Zers, followed by Millennials. The most common dishes all respondents were confident in their ability to whip up with or without a recipe were a simple jacket potato, omelette, or scrambled eggs on toast. Whereas the top meals they’d love to have a stab at if they were more adventurous were homemade bread, a fragrant Indian curry, and a hearty beef wellington. A spokesperson for pan brand Circulon said: “There seems to be some disconnect between Brits’ level of experience in the kitchen and how highly they rate their own skills. "As you might expect, those who know how to cook a wider variety of dishes would see themselves as more accomplished chefs. But instead, it seems that confidence is purely in the eye of the beholder.” Despite lofty ambitions, half end up cooking the same things week in week out. Four in ten kitchen confident Gen Zers will make the same dish multiple times a week – with 31% of Millennials saying the same. However, when varying what they were cooking, 19% of Millennials were motivated by a desire to try out new cookware and 25% of Gen Zers followed social media trends. Gen Zers and Millennials were also the most interested in using a wider range of kitchen gadgets and cookware as well as more innovative products such as all-in-one-pans or multicookers to improve their cooking methods. But uniting all generations was the shared experience (77%) of some sort of kitchen mishap that has put them off. With top blunders including burning the food or themselves, realising they were missing a crucial ingredient halfway through, and making such a mess it took forever to clean up afterwards. Other ways amateur chefs ruined dishes were through misreading recipes (14%), over seasoning something to the point it was inedible (11%), and having non-stick coating from a pot or pan flaking into the food (eight%). Circulon’s spokesperson added: “As a nation, we seem to be stuck in a bit of a culinary rut and end up eating a lot of the same dishes on rotation. “While I’m sure many of us see ourselves as adventurous people – it seems our taste buds aren’t always seeing the proof of this. And a lack of trust in our cookware is clearly contributing to a lack of kitchen confidence. “We shouldn’t need to be worrying about our tools letting us down, as this stands in the way of true creativity.”

Global tech tensions overshadow Web Summit's AI and robots

Flashy AI, robotics and self-driving cars will be on show at the annual Web Summit in Lisbon from Monday, but global tensions over high-tech trade, competition and sovereignty will be weighing on the minds of entrepreneurs, investors and policymakers. Known as the "Davos for geeks", the four-day event in the Portuguese capital is set to welcome over 70,000 visitors, including 2,500 startups and 1,000 investors. - AI and chips - With major global players racing to control the supply chains behind generative artificial intelligence, an appearance by chief executive of American chip developer Qualcomm Cristiano Amon will be a hot ticket. His company recently announced a new range of AI chips designed to compete with sector heavyweight Nvidia and challenger AMD. Both firms' high-end processors are subject to restrictions from Washington on their export to China on national security grounds. Several leaders of other top AI players will also appear in Lisbon, including Microsoft President Brad Smith and Joleen Liang, co-founder of Chinese startup Squirrel AI, which is bringing the technology into classrooms.
