Half of UK adults don't do enough exercise - with 15% doing none at all

The NHS advises that adults aged up to 64 should do "at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity like brisk walking or cycling, or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity like running" every week. However a study of 2,000 adults found 55% don’t do enough exercise to reach this threshold. With 35% of adults doing no more than 60 minutes of activity a week. Meanwhile as many as 15% do no exercise at all, complaining they don't have any time or motivation to do so. “I’m too tired” was the most common excuse Brits have used to not exercise, along with “it’s too hot” or “it’s too cold”. One in 20 have even blamed the need to do washing for not being more mobile. The research was commissioned by Citroën, found the average British adult spends six hours a day sat down and only manages around 6,500 steps. The brand has teamed up with 2021 Olympic finalist and current British 5km road champion, Alex Bell and her coach Andrew Henderson. Henderson is head coach at the Leeds England Athletics Hub, and together with Alex and Citroën created the ‘Charge Up In 30 Guide’, a 30-minute workout which can be done in the time it takes to charge an electric vehicle. Greg Taylor, managing director for Citroën UK, makers of the new ë-C3 said: "Sometimes life can get in the way of hitting your fitness goals, but it’s important that we try to make the time to keep ourselves healthy. “With a busy schedule, it can be hard to find the time, but sacrificing 30 minutes on the sofa to get up for a walk or a run can make all the difference.” The research, carried out via OnePoll, also found 91% of the parents polled actively encourage their children to be more active, with 50% concerned about their level of exercise. Among the favourite activities for children were running (58%), playing football (53%), and dance (35%). More than two thirds of parents (67%) said they exercise with their children - but for those that don’t, 22% felt it is more enjoyable doing it solo. Greg Taylor added: “It can be fun to exercise as a family, not only does doing it together teach healthy habits, but it can help you grow familiar interests and bond over something new. “This guide is aimed at the whole family, offering variations on each exercise. Creating a schedule where you set aside time for you and your family to get active can help in developing healthier routines.”

"I'm originally from Surrey, so I know the area well and have really fond memories of growing up there. Surrey is such a lovely area – and this is such an amazing house. "I met my wife for the first time just up the road in Guildford when we were working together – the synchronicity of this win is crazy – it feels like it must be fate. "We've just had our second baby daughter, so this win has come at the perfect time. It's the best feeling in the world knowing our daughters' futures are secure – it's absolutely incredible. Queensland teachers plan strike, but stop short of announcing date

The Queensland Teachers' Union says it will press ahead with strike action over a long-running pay dispute with the state government but is yet to lock in a date. Union president Cresta Richardson said after-school rallies would be held across the state next Thursday, instead of 24-hour strike action. "We will know the date when we will strike when our executive will determine that. "We have six weeks before the end of the school year … so it will be in that time. "Rallies will be held after school so exams will go ahead as normal. We know that it's a really tense time for kids. "The government has chosen this, this is the premier's path at this point in time. The premier can intervene at any time." The move follows a stern letter from Education Director-General Sharon Schimming, who warned strikes during senior exams would "bring the profession into disrepute". Members voted against a proposed pay rise that would see teachers earn more than $100,000 a year by the end of 2028. A majority — 67 per cent — of the union's 50,000 members voted down the state government offer end of October. It included a three-year 8 per cent pay rise and meant every state school teacher would earn more than $100,000 a year by the end of 2028. It also promised a new safety taskforce to deal with violence in classrooms. But the union stopped short of recommending the deal, opening the vote to its members.

Man who killed his wife in front of their child sentenced to life in prison

The Northern Territory's highest judge has described the domestic violence murder of a grandmother as a "profound tragedy", while sentencing her killer to life behind bars. Steven John was found guilty of murdering his wife — referred to as Ms Skeen for cultural reasons — following a three-day NT Supreme Court trial this week. The 48-year-old stabbed Ms Skeen, 45, in the back with a 15 centimetre boning knife during a drunken argument at a home in the remote community of Jilkminggan, south-east of Katherine, in July 2023. The incident unfolded in front of the couple's 21-year-old daughter, Lily May John, who told the court she witnessed her parents fighting and heard her father threatening to stab and kill her mother in the moments leading up the incident. "Your daughter was telling you to stop and put the knife down, but you were undeterred and refused to do so," Chief Justice Michael Grant said during his sentencing remarks on Friday. Chief Justice Grant sentenced John to life in prison — the mandatory sentence for murder in the NT — with a minimum period of 20 years without parole. During the trial, defence lawyer Amit Malik argued that his client had been provoked when Ms Skeen punched John three times in the head and called him a "black c**t"— however, the jury rejected that argument. Chief Justice Grant described John's actions as "entirely disproportionate" to Ms Skeen's behaviour. 'Intergenerational cycle' of violence: Judge Chief Justice Grant described the incident as "a profound tragedy for everyone concerned". The court heard John's home life as a child had been marred by domestic violence and alcohol abuse, which the judge said had led to an "intergenerational cycle" he described as a "great tragedy". "I have no doubt your relationship with the deceased was blighted by alcohol and domestic violence over an extended period," Chief Justice Grant said. 'We trusted you': Family statement In a victim impact statement read to the court by prosecutor Ian Read SC on Friday, Ms Skeen's family said their lives had been changed forever as a result of her death. "We are all still in shock she is gone in such a tragic way," the statement said. "We trusted you to protect her and instead you abused her and took her away from us." Mr Read told the court that while there was no victim impact statement from the couple's daughter, the trauma and distress she had suffered as a result of the incident was "hardly surprising". Mr Read also made an impassioned submission about the impacts on victims of the NT's mandatory sentencing regime, which he said sometimes "forced matters to trial". "Victims not only have to relive the incident … but are often required to review their statements and watch body-worn video, which is often very traumatic," he said.

BBC Strictly Come Dancing star announces split from Emmerdale actress girlfriend

Pop sensation HRVY has revealed he's flying solo following his split from Emmerdale actress Mimi Slinger. The 26 year old crooner, who made it to the Strictly Come Dancing final in 2020 alongside pro dancer Janette Manrara, has called time on his romance with the former soap star. Mimi portrayed Leanna Cavanagh on the ITV drama for four years before her character met a grisly end in 2021. HRVY, whose real name is Harvey Leigh Cantwell, appears to have confirmed the breakup via TikTok in typical cryptic fashion. The brief video shows the star looking contemplative as he nods and flashes a thumbs up at the camera, with the caption: "I'm now single... I blame that Vogue article.", reports Wales Online . The piece he's referring to, titled Is Having A Boyfriend Embarrassing Now?, was published late last month and explored shifts in "the way people showcase their relationships online". Representatives for both HRVY and Mimi have been approached for comment. The pair began their relationship in 2021 after crossing paths at the National Television Awards. The singer had previously gushed about how their shared showbiz careers made things work smoothly between them. "We get to see each other all the time," he told The Sun. "It's a nice balance and because we're both in the industry we both understand, so it's easy." HRVY burst onto the scene with his debut track, Thank You, back in 2013 when he was just 14 years old. Following this, he supported big names such as Little Mix and Conor Maynard, while also appearing on a variety of CBBC shows like Friday Download and Chicken Girls. In 2020, he took to the dance floor on BBC's Strictly with Janette, making it all the way to the final and securing second place, just behind winners Oti Mabuse and Bill Bailey. He was the last celebrity partner for Janette before she left the show to present the Strictly spin-off programme, It Takes Two. Actress Mimi, aged 22, joined the cast of Emmerdale as Leanna in 2018 and exited in 2021. Since then, she has appeared in a short film titled Path to Ecstasy and featured in an episode of Masters Of The Air. Her time on Emmerdale saw her character involved in a tumultuous relationship with Jacob Gallagher (played by Joe-Warren Plant) and clashing with Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham). However, Leanna's journey came to a tragic end when she fell victim to serial killer Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu). Strictly Come Dancing airs Saturdays and Sundays on BBC One

Scots dad meets strangers who helped save his life after heart attack on bike

A cyclist who survived a heart attack thanks to friends and passers-by using a defibrillator has met two of the people who helped save his life. The reunion came as the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland revealed there are now more than 10,000 public defibrillators registered in Scotland. Jamie Martin, 64, had been cycling with three friends through the village of Gifford, East Lothian, when his heart stopped. The father of two said he has very little memory of the incident in May 2024 that nearly cost him his life. “We set off at 9.29am and I was dead by 11am,” he recalled. “My friends and I had stopped for a coffee and were leaving the village on a notorious hill called Cockles Brae. “I recall leaving the Lantern Rouge Cafe but can’t remember anything else until 12 hours later. “I’m never the quickest on the hills and I was at the back, when my friend saw me keeling over. “My heart had just stopped, and I basically just fell off.” Mr Martin’s friends began administering CPR, and fetched the village defibrillator from where it was attached to the wall opposite the cafe. They had administered five shocks when Eleanor Hulme, a retired medic who was responsible for registering the device, happened to be passing by. “Jamie’s friends had already arranged for the defib to be brought to the scene,” she explained. “He was in very deep trouble, and he had five shocks from the defib, and several times when no shock was advised, he was kept alive only by the chest compressions. “Given the rural location, the ambulance arrived remarkably quickly within 20 minutes, however, there is no doubt that the defib helped save his life.” Local resident Gordon Steele, 71, was also passing by and stopped to help with the CPR efforts. The retired distiller said: “We gave him four or five shocks with the defib, and each time his heart started but then his pulse faded away. “The last time we did it, he sounded like a diesel engine, and then his breathing started with some strength and his heart began to beat unassisted. “I was very glad to hear what the outcome was and that he made a full recovery.” Once he reached the hospital, Mr Martin had a stent fitted into a blocked artery. ECG tests a few months later showed his heart muscle had fully recovered, and he is now back on the bike – including tackling that same hill. “I have since been back up there and set a personal record,” he said. “I now have more blood going round my body than I have had for a few years because that artery was just getting steadily blocked. “But I know how lucky I am to have lived to tell the tale.” Ms Hulme said the incident had encouraged others to register defibrillators – and there are now six of the devices registered in Gifford alone, a village of just 800 people. BHF Scotland arranged for Mr Martin to meet with Ms Hulme and Mr Steele in October, and he was able to thank them personally over a coffee in the cafe. The cyclist also praised the actions of the NHS Ambulance, Medic One service and Royal Infirmary Trauma teams for their swift actions that day. BHF Scotland said about 3,200 cardiac arrests happen outside hospitals in Scotland every year, and that the survival rate is less than one in 10. The charity said every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chances of survival by up to 10%, so knowing where the nearest defibrillator is located could be the difference between life and death. David McColgan, head of BHF Scotland, said: “Every second counts when someone has a cardiac arrest, so it is wonderful that help was on hand quickly for Jamie. “His extraordinary story is another reminder about the importance of fast access to public defibs and its great news that over 10,000 are now registered on The Circuit in Scotland.”

This led to netizens raising further concerns about his past as a viral TikTok about Teen Top's Neil getting stitches after a fight with Bang Min-soo landed on the internet. Additionally, with the latest news about his presidential position at Idol Union raised more concerns have been raised regarding the safety of K-pop girl groups and female artists. This concern was majorly due to his old statement made back in 2016, where he stated that if he had a son, he would support him completely and let to do whatever he wants, but if he had a daughter, he would beat her up and lock her inside the house because the outside world is cruel. This sparked misogynistic allegations against the idols. Therefore, while fans believed that the venture was needed and productive for the K-pop industry, they expressed their lack of trust in the Idol Union's president, Bang Min-soo. Approval from the Ministry of Employment and Labor to recognize K-pop idols as workers is expected by the end of November 2025.So far, ten K-pop idols have already expressed their intentions to join the Idol Union, and one of the revealed members is singer Ailee. In addition to Bang Min-soo, the chairman of Idol Union, Seo Min-sun will oversee all preparations and public relations for the Idol Union's establishment. The union also sent a request to the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism regarding the mental health management of the K-pop idols. The requests mentioned in the same are listed below:Appropriate responses from agencies in cases of malicious comments - Legal action, deletion requests, and lawsuit support.Possession and operation of a mental health management manual.Notifying guardians and managing counseling records during events of danger.Additionally, here's what the union explained to recognize K-pop idols as workers:“In reality, idols provide labor according to a schedule in a set location such as a practice room or dormitory under the direction and supervision of their agency, and receive continuous compensation in the form of a settlement amount, so there is a high possibility that they will be recognized as workers under the Labor Standards Act.”However, many of the procedures of establishing and getting approvals for the union are still underway, and the venture can be expected to launch sometime by the end of this year.

Six months to save the NHS in Scotland, says Labour’s Anas Sarwar on countdown to Holyrood election

The Scottish Labour leader has said there is “six months to save Scotland’s NHS”, marking half a year until the Holyrood election. Anas Sarwar said Scotland’s NHS “will not survive a third decade of SNP failure”, as he looked ahead to the poll in May. He said: “In half a year’s time Scotland will elect a new Scottish Government and the stakes could not be higher. “Right now, one in six Scots are on an NHS waiting list, record numbers of people are being forced to go private, and thousands of patients every week face dangerously long waits in A&E. “The SNP has blown a hole in the founding principles of our NHS, and I truly fear our health service will not survive a third decade of this SNP failure. “Too many Scots are being let down in their hour of need, being forced to spend their life-savings on private healthcare or languish on waiting lists for years on end – but this is not as good as it gets.” Of those on an NHS waiting list, 12,456 people have been waiting more than two years for an inpatient procedure or outpatient appointment. On Tuesday, it emerged two health boards required large loans from the Scottish Government to break even in the last financial year. Audit Scotland said NHS Grampian and NHS Ayrshire & Arran both received multimillion-pound loans. Sarwar said: “We have six months to get rid of this tired, incompetent SNP Government and save Scotland’s NHS. “A Scottish Labour government will tackle the waiting list emergency by utilising capacity across the country, end the 8am GP rush by renegotiating the GP contract, ensure our NHS can benefit from cutting-edge technology, support hardworking NHS staff with a real workforce plan, and ease the pressure on hospitals by properly supporting social care and primary care. “The only way to save Scotland’s NHS is by getting rid of the SNP in six months’ time, and the only party that can do that is Scottish Labour.” SNP depute leader Keith Brown said: “People in Scotland only have to look down south to see what a Labour Government looks like. In England, waiting times are rising month after month, and in Wales A&E waiting times performance is truly appalling. “By contrast, under John Swinney’s leadership, waiting times in Scotland are coming down, GP numbers are up, and we’ve seen record numbers of hip and knee replacements performed last year. “There is much more to do, and the SNP Government recently announced a historic funding deal with GPs and plans to introduce a network of seven-day-a-week walk-in GP clinics across Scotland. “Anas Sarwar has had five years as Labour leader and he has not come up with a single original idea to improve people’s lives. You cannot run a government on soundbites alone – but given Mr Sarwar is leading Labour into third place in Scotland, he is never going to find what running government is like.”

Timberwolves trade proposal to Grizzlies teams up Ja Morant with Anthony Edwards

Timberwolves trade proposal to Grizzlies teams up Ja Morant with Anthony Edwards

The Ja Morant-led Memphis Grizzlies may not have hit rock bottom yet, but they surely are well on their way. On Wednesday night, the Grizzlies suffered their fourth straight defeat, a 124-109 loss to the Houston Rockets. Morant, in particular, appears to be very much checked out. He put up another woeful shooting night, making just six of his 19 field-goal attempts for 17 points, and his poor play is bleeding into the entire squad as they seemingly could not buy a win to save their lives. It is getting very close to danger time for the Grizzlies. Morant doesn’t appear to be in the best of terms with head coach Tuomas Iisalo, and there seems to be so much discontent on his end that Memphis may end up having no choice but to move on from him for the betterment of both sides. To that end, a team like the Minnesota Timberwolves may be able to pounce. According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Timberwolves are one of a few teams monitoring the dicey Morant-Grizzlies situation. The Timberwolves have made it to the Conference Finals for two consecutive years, so they must be doing something right as an organization. Monitoring the Morant situation does not mean that they are interested whatsoever in bringing him in. In fact, it is very much unlikely that the Timberwolves even engage with the Grizzlies on trade talks for Morant. Minnesota is currently above the first apron and is only $3 million below the second, which means that they have to match salaries perfectly (or at least send out more than they take) for them to even get Morant on board. But if ever they decide that the risk that comes with taking on Morant is worth it, here is the best trade package they must dangle. Timberwolves and Grizzlies strike three-team trade involving Nets Petre Thomas-Imagn Images Timberwolves receive: Ja Morant Grizzlies receive: Julius Randle, Rob Dillingham, Leonard Miller, two second-round picks, 2032 pick swap (protected for top-10, will convert into two second-round picks if swap not used) Nets receive: Brandon Clarke, two second-round picks This is the best offer Minnesota must make © Brad Rempel-Imagn Images As the old adage goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The Randle trade last year seemed to derail the Timberwolves at first. But they figured it out towards the end of the year, with Donte DiVincenzo, the other piece that Minnesota got in the Karl-Anthony Towns trade, being productive as well. If anything, the Timberwolves would want to stand pat. Their cap situation makes it difficult to make any more adjustments to their roster anyway, so it’s best for them to just ride out their core — especially when they’ve been so successful over the past few years, being one of the final four teams standing. The Timberwolves’ point guard situation isn’t in need of fixing as well. DiVincenzo has been a great combo guard alongside Anthony Edwards; Edwards has been taking on more and more playmaking and ballhandling responsibilities, making DiVincenzo, one of the best volume three-point shooters in the NBA, an ideal fit alongside him. And then there’s Mike Conley, the veteran who simply cannot stop being productive. His body needs more care than ever, which is why he’s coming off the bench and playing more sparsely. But the leadership, smarts, and overall good vibes he provides to the Timberwolves locker room are so invaluable. This is why adding Morant does not make a ton of sense for the Timberwolves. Morant might get along with Edwards just fine, but the former has a track record of pouting when things don’t go his way, not to mention his off-court troubles that have derailed the Grizzlies over the past few seasons. The Timberwolves have such a harmonious locker room, and this has powered their incredible past two seasons. Adding Morant, who doesn’t address a position of need anyway, seems a bit unnecessary — especially if it costs them Randle, who has been phenomenal to begin the year for Minnesota. Minnesota is also high on Dillingham, but they need to trade him away in any Morant trade if they were to keep the likes of Naz Reid, DiVincenzo, and Conley (there is no way that the Timberwolves are going to trade Edwards, Rudy Gobert, and Jaden McDaniels away). Dillingham, who’s just in his sophomore season, will be of interest for the Grizzlies as another point guard they could develop to perhaps take the mantle following Morant’s departure. Leonard Miller is a throw-in, and the 2032 pick swap is top-10 protected, which insures them in the event of a bad 2031-32 campaign. Again, it is worth mentioning that there is no way the Timberwolves do this. Morant’s stock is at an all-time low, which could be a buy-low opportunity, but he may not be the kind of co-star Minnesota would want to pair Edwards with anyway. They’re better off saving whatever’s left of their trade assets to acquire someone who fits better with the team both on and off the court. Memphis to sell low on Ja Morant? Mandatory Credit: Petre Thomas-Imagn Images Morant has been the Grizzlies’ franchise cornerstone alongside Jaren Jackson Jr. since 2019. He transformed the franchise almost immediately, and in his third season, he already had Memphis as the two-seed in the West. But since then, the Grizzlies have been stumbling. Morant’s gun issues and questionable behavior off the court during the 2022-23 season landed him in hot water with the NBA, he was suspended for 25 games and then tore his labrum shortly after the following year, and then during the 2024-25 campaign, the Grizzlies fell out with former head coach Taylor Jenkins and sputtered en route to a first-round exit at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Now, the Grizzlies’ floor general appears to have already soured on Iisalo beyond repair. Memphis could always decide to jettison the head coach to appease their star player, but the front office appears to be huge believers in Iisalo if they decided to give him the job without even scouring the coaching market for a potentially more suitable option. But at this point, is Morant even worth the headache? It would be one thing if the Grizzlies star is playing his heart out. But he’s been dreadful on the court as well. He’s shooting 28.6 percent from the field over his past three games and appears to want to be elsewhere every time he’s on the hardwood. Of course, the Grizzlies believe in Morant; they have to. He’s the team’s highest-paid player at present (he will be taking a backseat to Jackson in the salary department), and they have constructed the roster around him. He’s also only 26 years of age, so he should be in the prime of his career. There’s a chance that Morant is simply sandbagging with the hopes of getting the change he desires, be it Iisalo’s departure or a trade from Memphis altogether. He might turn it up and make the Grizzlies regret ever agitating him. Nonetheless, this trade package is the best it’s gonna get for the Grizzlies from the Timberwolves. Randle is a tough rebounder, so he could make it so that Jackson plays center and they won’t be outrebounded. Dillingham is a good prospect to take a chance on, while Miller is the exact kind of lengthy wing that Memphis specializes in honing into a valuable contributor. Getting off of Clarke’s contract amid his injury could be helpful as well. Acquiring just two second-round picks and a pick swap that may not convey may not nearly be enough. But Morant’s trade value is in the gutter, and his reputation in the mud.

McDonald’s agrees further measures to protect staff from sexual abuse

McDonald’s has agreed a further set of measures with Britain’s equality watchdog to protect the fast food chain’s staff from sexual abuse. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) had originally signed a legal agreement with McDonald’s to prevent sexual harassment in 2023, following concerns about how complaints made by staff were handled in its UK restaurants. The original agreement was due to end in 2025, but this has now been strengthened and extended for at least a year. In March, the regulator was forced to write a letter to owners of McDonald’s UK franchises warning them that they could face legal action if they failed to comply. The EHRC said on Friday it needed to agree “stronger actions” with McDonald’s, but was pleased with steps the group was now taking. Earlier this year, more than 700 people who were aged 19 or younger when working at McDonald’s instructed law firm Leigh Day to take legal action on their behalf. More than 450 McDonald’s restaurants had been implicated in the claims by February, which described discrimination, homophobia, racism, ableism and harassment. Baroness Kishwer Falkner, chairwoman of the EHRC, said: “We originally signed a legal agreement with McDonald’s to prevent sexual harassment in 2023. “After serious allegations were raised, we decided we needed to update the action plan with stronger actions that were more specific to the way McDonald’s operates. “We’re pleased with the significant steps McDonald’s has agreed to take towards a safer working environment for its staff and recognise the hard work they’ve done so far. “Once completed, the actions that make up this legal agreement will ensure that there is zero tolerance for harassment at McDonald’s and there are clear routes to report and resolve complaints if it does occur.” The strengthened steps that McDonald’s must take under the new agreement include working with external experts on a new safeguarding plan to protect vulnerable workers, which will be rolled out across McDonald’s restaurants; ensuring complaints against managers are investigated outside the restaurant; hiring an external auditor to audit McDonald’s new complaints handling unit and expanding training for managers and franchisees to cover social media and grooming. McDonald’s is one of Britain’s largest employers, with more than 170,000 people working in 1,450 restaurants. The fast food giant says the average age of its employees is 20. The legal claims follow a separate BBC report in 2023, in which workers spoke of sexual assault, harassment, racism and bullying in the workplace. That prompted McDonald’s to bring in consultants from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to audit its restaurants. McDonald’s has been approached for comment.

San Miguel GS at Altorreal (5 November 2025)

A balmy November morning saw a plethora of SMGS members and guests arrive up to the “Beverly Hills” of Murcia. A little warmer than the norm for this time of year, but nobody was complaining. A course that is enjoyed by many and a bit “meehhh” by others, but they still play it! The staff are always so welcoming and efficient and the course was in great condition, which as we all know, course conditions can change so quickly from week to week. The cost at this course is reasonable compared to what other courses around are charging at this time of year. Well worth playing. A slightly larger field this week of 51 golfers including six guests and a few noticeable absences (you know who you are Captain, Vice-Captain and Secretary!). The yellow tees always seem to be well back at this course but you get a few more metres for your euros for sure. And what you all want to know is…..: Gold: Drew Niblock (39 points and best score of the day)Silver: Phil de Lacy (33 points)Bronze: Carol Hanak (36 points – what a fabulous score – well done Carol!!) The “Twos” pot this week was shared equally between Guy Wade Palmer (probably the 8th!) and John Simmons. Nearest the Pins were had by Dave Friedman (5th), Guy Wade Palmer (8th), Richard Whitely (10th) and Barry “BTB” Roehrig (17th). Willie Fenn took the prized football card loot with Chelsea and our dear mate Maca (Alan Macdonald) just wanted the “McBride Bottle” this week. Best guests were Paul Came (25 points) and Colin Fawcett also with 25 points coming second on countback. We have continued with our RBL Poppy Appeal this week and will continue to raise funds for the final week next week when we are north at Font del Llop – let’s hope the gnats have gnatted off somewhere else since the last time we played there. Keep up to date with SMGS on our website www.smgs.org. **SPONSORSHIP AVAILABILITY** If you are interested in sponsoring one of our games – please contact smgs91info@gmail.com to discuss further. We are proud to be supported by Michaela Schmidt at www.golf-hotspots.com for all your golf travel requirements. No winners picture was taken this week (tut tut) so we will have a McBride Bottle picture of Alan Macdonald and a photo kindly sent in by the absentee members off on their jolly….

Putin's 'seal', a scared police inspector and the two-year operation against the Mallorca drugs organisation

The two-year Guardia Civil-National Police operation to take down one of the most significant drugs organisations ever known in Mallorca netted 687 kilos of cocaine, 2,500 kilos of hashish, 1.5 million euros cash and sixteen weapons. Seventy-six people have been arrested; more than half of them are in pre-trial detention. With the court secrecy order having been lifted, plenty of detail has been emerging. One curiosity is that the most prized cocaine bore the 'seal' of Vladimir Putin. A photo of Putin was on certain packages. Cocaine package with the image of Vladimir Putin. Much of the evidence against the leaders of the organisation - lawyer Gonzalo Márquez and the head of the United Tribuns bikers, Stefan Milojevic - has come from intercepted phone conversations. These conversations include various references to Faustino Nogales, the former National Police chief of one the force's narcotics squads. Like Márquez and Milojevic, he was arrested on August 11 in what turned out to be just one of a series of police actions, the most recent of which was last week. The relationship with Nogales is revealed in these conversations. On May 21 this year, Márquez told Milojevic: "The other guy is scared stiff." He then added: "Faustino, I don't know to what extent he's been a good recruit. He didn't want to be a group leader of anything, but he's not leaving either." Nogales also cropped up in a conversation in which Milojevic discussed the possibility that a tracking device could have been placed in his car - Milojevic had in fact taken the car to a trusted mechanic to check for devices; none were found. This was at the end of March this year, and the pair regretted the fact that Nogales was no longer a member of the narcotics squad. Milojevic said: "Do you know what I told him? I told him, Faus, isn't there a single guy who ...? With how corrupt you all are, I told him, isn't there anyone who can be paid off?" Márquez replied: "They're a bunch of criminals, and he's the first one." He added that he couldn't stand Nogales and that he disliked him more every day. To this, and in reference to the inspector's previous unit, Milojevic responded: "The problem is that when he was there, he was useful." Milojevic knew that he was being investigated, as was his brother. That information was allegedly supplied by Nogales and was given just ahead of the August 11 raids. Milojevic intended to get off the island and drive to Austria. He knew he was being investigated but was unsure about members of the organisation. Palma Port police officer Ángel L., one of his most trusted associates, was aware of the role Nogales played in the organisation and asked Milojevic if Nogales had informed him of "any news". In a different conversation, Márquez referred to a Vox deputy mayor being "a very good friend" of his. The conversation does not specify anything further about who this deputy mayor was. For the organisation's drugs activities, there was what amounted to a catalogue of different drugs, their prices and their quality. This was where the cocaine with the Putin seal fitted in; it was the best. Staggering quantities of drugs were sold. Ramón Orta of the Orta clan was arrested last week. His clan purchased 194 kilos of cocaine worth approximately four million euros.

Lorraine Kelly is live on STV to celebrate another incredible year of fundraising for the STV Children’s Appeal

STV is set to air a special programme on Friday live from its Pacific Quay headquarters in Glasgow, which will highlight and celebrate the work of its charity, the STV Children’s Appeal, throughout 2025. TV legend Lorraine Kelly – an STV Children’s Appeal trustee since its inception – will host the programme and meet a variety of people who have either supported the Appeal or benefited from its work over the past year. Ahead of the show, Lorraine was pictured donning a kilt and scarf designed in a unique tartan print by Paisley-based family business, Houston Kiltmakers. The official STV Children’s Appeal tartan features the charity’s pink, yellow and blue colour palette and was created by the firm earlier this year to help raise money for the Appeal. Kelly said: “Celebrating all the fundraisers and projects involved in the STV Children’s Appeal is always one of the highlights of my year – and this year will be extra special, as I’m heading to Scotland to present the Appeal Show live from STV HQ. “I’m looking forward to meeting more incredible people from across the country, hearing their inspiring stories and learning what the work of the STV Children’s Appeal means to them. “Every year we’re reminded that the Appeal makes an enormous difference to so many families and communities across Scotland, and it can only do that with the generous – and never taken-for-granted – donations of our lovely STV viewers.” The STV Children’s Appeal – which is supported by the Scottish Government, The Wood Foundation, a range of businesses and STV viewers – works with a range of charities across Scotland. Friday’s show will put the spotlight on three different projects that have received support this year: Dundee Bairns, which helps children living in poverty in Dundee; TCCL, which provides support to families with children who suffer from cancer or leukaemia in Tayside and north-east Fife; and Happy Place Workshop, which travels the country providing a safe space for children to express their emotions through art and music. The latter project was set up by Glasgow pop duo SAINT PHNX – made up of brothers Alan and Stevie Jukes – and takes inspiration from the lyrics of their song “Happy Place”, which are rooted in the band’s personal experience of loss and healing. SAINT PHNX will be in the studio with Lorraine to discuss the work of Happy Place Workshop, before being joined by chart-topping singer Nathan Evans for an exclusive performance. The Appeal Show will also hear from STV presenters Sean Batty and Laura Boyd, who recently took part in an epic fundraising challenge on the Isle of Mull. The Scottish Government has been a supporter of the STV Children’s Appeal since its inception in 2011, providing up to £1m of match funding annually, and First Minister John Swinney will appear on the programme to acknowledge the important work of projects supported by the Appeal. Viewers inspired by this year’s Appeal Show will be encouraged to donate to help young people and families across the country. Every penny raised on the night remains in Scotland and 100% of donations go to those who need it most. Administration costs are covered by STV and by a portion of The Wood Foundation’s donation to the Appeal. The Wood Foundation has partnered with the Appeal since 2013, donating over £1.8m to date. The STV Children’s Appeal has raised over £37m for children and families affected by poverty in Scotland since its formation in 2011. Join Lorraine Kelly for The STV Children’s Appeal Show 2025 on Friday 7 November at 7pm on STV and STV Player.

Mahhi Vij hospitalised, team shares health update: Jay Bhanushali skips visit, fuels divorce speculation

Popular TV couple Mahhi Vij and Jay Bhanushali have been grabbing headlines over rumours of marital discord. Reports are rife that the two are living separately and have headed for divorce. Several media outlets have also claimed that their daughter Tara's custody has been finalised and that the couple are staying apart. However, Mahhi Vij has slammed these reports and threatened to take legal action against media outlets for spreading fake divorce rumours. Amid the ongoing drama, Mahhi has been admitted to a hospital in Mumbai after suffering from a high fever and severe weakness. On Thursday, Mahhi's team shared a health update on Instagram, revealing that doctors are currently conducting several tests. They also posted a picture of Mahhi resting on a hospital bed. Sharing the update, the caption of the Instagram post read, "@mahhivij has been admitted to the hospital right now owing to a high fever. We could not reach her for more updates, but her publicist Avantika Sinha confirms the news, saying, "Yes, she has a high fever and extreme weakness and has just been admitted to the hospital. The doctor will run tests now. Nothing beyond this can be confirmed just yet. She is stable." Earlier, Mahhi had shared Instagram Stories about battling a viral infection. In one of her posts, she was seen taking several medicines and also penned a note expressing gratitude towards her family for supporting her during this difficult time. However, Jay wasn't seen at the hospital where Mahhi is admitted, and fans were quick to point out how Mahhi did not mention talking about Jay at all. Apart from the divorce buzz, reports also claimed that Mahhi took Rs 5 crore from Jay as alimony. Recently, in her new vlog, Mahhi addressed the speculation and reacted to the claims about receiving crores in alimony after their alleged divorce. She said, "I read somewhere that I have signed the divorce papers, please show me the papers. Until we say something ourselves, you have no right to interfere in our personal lives and personal space. I know we are public figures, but we will tell you only what we want to. I have a sick mother at home and three kids, out of which two understand what's happening. I even got a message from Khushi saying, 'Mumma, what the hell is this? Why are they interfering in our personal life?' Even the kids are being questioned in school." "Until you hear it from me, please don't believe anything. Please respect our privacy, that of our kids and parents as well. It's a request, please leave us alone. If we think we need to tell you something, we will. Jay is my family and will always be my family. He is a wonderful father to my child and a wonderful human being," she added. About Mahi and Jay Mahhi and Jay first met at a common friend's party and instantly connected. After dating for a few years, the two tied the knot in 2010 in an intimate ceremony. The couple are parents to three children: their biological daughter Tara and two foster kids, Rajveer and Khushi.
