Deadly Typhoon Kalmaegi ravages Vietnam, Philippines

Typhoon Kalmaegi churned across Vietnam Friday, claiming five more lives after its devastating passage through the Philippines where the death toll rose to 188. Kalmaegi unleashed record rainfall and flooding in the central Philippines this week -- sweeping away cars, trucks and shipping containers before lashing Vietnam late Thursday. "The roof of my house was just blown away," said Nguyen Van Tam, a 42-year-old fisherman in Vietnam's Gia Lai province, where the storm made landfall packing sustained winds of up to 149 kilometres (92 miles) per hour, according to the environment ministry. "We were all safe, (but) the typhoon was really terrible, so many trees fallen," he said, adding that his boat had survived intact. Vietnamese authorities were still assessing the damage on Friday morning, but the environment ministry reported five dead, and 57 houses collapsed in Gia Lai and neighbouring Dak Lak. Nearly 3,000 more had their roofs blown off or were damaged, it said, while 11 boats or ships sank. In the streets along Gia Lai's Quy Nhon beach, AFP journalists saw rescue workers and soldiers working with residents to clear uprooted trees, remove debris and collect sheet-metal roofs blown away in the night. "This was a very big typhoon that hit us," Tran Ngo An, 64, told AFP. "This was the second time I witnessed such a typhoon. The other one was 10 years ago or so, but not that strong as compared to this." The state power company said 1.6 million clients lost electricity as the typhoon smashed the central coast, but service to a third of them had been restored by Friday morning. Vietnam is in one of the most active tropical cyclone regions on Earth and is typically affected by 10 typhoons or storms a year, but Kalmaegi was the 13th of 2025. Scientists warn that storms are becoming more powerful due to human-driven climate change. Warmer oceans allow typhoons to strengthen rapidly, and a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, meaning heavier rainfall. Fast-moving Kalmaegi had already swept northwest toward Laos by morning with significantly weakened winds, but heavy rain was still forecast for much of Vietnam's central coast, the national weather bureau said. The storm was next forecast to hit Thailand, which issued a warning Friday for heavy rainfall and flooding starting in the northeast but spreading to the rest of the country. - Relentless rains - Kalmaegi had initially battered the islands of Cebu and Negros in the Philippines before swooping back out to sea. Floodwaters described as unprecedented rushed through the hardest hit Cebu province's towns and cities, where the hunt for missing people continues. Philippines authorities raised the death toll to 188, with 135 still missing. The typhoon hit central Vietnam as it was still reeling from more than a week of flooding and record rains that killed at least 47 people and submerged centuries-old historic sites. The heavy rains starting in late October had drenched the former imperial capital Hue and the ancient town of Hoi An, both UNESCO-listed sites, turning streets into canals and flooding tens of thousands of homes. Up to 1.7 metres (5 feet 6 inches) fell over one 24-hour period in a downpour breaking national records. With more than 3,200 kilometres of coastline and a network of 2,300 rivers, Vietnam faces a high risk of flooding. Before Kalmaegi, natural disasters had already left 279 people dead or missing this year and caused more than $2 billion in damage, according to Vietnam's national statistics office. tmh-tym/sjc/jm

Crystal Palace vs Brighton: Prediction, kick-off time, TV, live stream, team news, h2h results, odds

The M23 Derby returns this weekend as Crystal Palace host Brighton at Selhurst Park. The Eagles are in fine form, taking their run to three straight wins by beating AZ Alkmaar 3-1 in the Conference League on Thursday night. Oliver Glasner was not entirely impressed with the performance, though, criticising his side for their slow start. Palace have enjoyed a fairly strong start in the Premier League in spite of Glasner’s gripes. They sit ninth, just one point clear of Sunday's opponents. Brighton’s campaign has yielded mixed results so far, with wins over Chelsea and Newcastle in stark contrast to a defeat by Everton and a draw with struggling Wolves. Crystal Palace vs Brighton is scheduled for a 2pm GMT kick-off on Sunday, November 9, 2025. The match will take place at Selhurst Park in south London. TV channel: In the UK, the game will be televised live on Sky Sports+, with coverage starting at 1.55pm GMT ahead of a 2pm kick-off Live stream: Sky Sports subscribers can also catch the contest live online via the Sky Go app and website. Crystal Palace will hope to welcome Chadi Riad back into the matchday squad after he returned to training last week, several months after suffering a serious knee injury. He was not passed fit in time to face AZ, though. Glasner is also monitoring Ismaila Sarr’s fitness after he played through hamstring tightness on Thursday. Cheick Doucoure and Eddie Nketiah are both expected to miss out, but it is hoped both could be back in contention after the international break. Glasner may be tempted to rotate his side after he named a strong starting lineup against Alkmaar. The Eagles have just two days off before they face Brighton. The Seagulls will leave several first-team players on the south coast. Chiefly, Karou Mitoma may miss out with an ankle injury - he will face a late fitness test before travelling. Joel Veltman is expected to play after shaking off a knock, though Jack Hinshelwood and James Milner are both sidelined. So too are Brajan Gruda, Solly March, and Adam Webster. As their proximity in the Premier League table suggests, this match is almost too close to call. Crystal Palace face the obvious disadvantage of having just 48 hours to recover from a midweek European fixture before facing Brighton, who have had over a week off since beating Leeds last time out. With that said, Palace seem to be improving with every match they play. Thursday’s defeat of Alkmaar was arguably among their best performances of the season so far. Whether they are fit enough to replicate it remains to be seen, but derby hype should be enough to cancel out any heavy legs. Crystal Palace to win, 1-0 Crystal Palace pulled off a league double over Brighton last season, for the first time in club history. Crystal Palace wins: 13 Brighton wins: 12 Crystal Palace to win: 6/5 Brighton to win: 9/5 Odds via Betfair (subject to change).

Kylie Minogue bringing wine and corned beef to Capital's Jingle Bell Ball hopes Sian Welby

CAPITAL’S Sian Welby wants Kylie Minogue to play Santa by bringing wine and er...corned beef when she headlines the Jingle Bell Ball next month. The Aussie princess plays the annual festive shindig at The O2 London alongside 1D star Louis Tomlinson and chart topper Alex Warren on December 7. Breakfast co-host Sian is a fan of Kylie ’s music and her plonk: “I will never forget when Kylie gave me her Kylie Rosé in a tote bag and she gave us all gifts. I’ve never known an artist ever do that. And I still to this day use that tote bag because I know she gave it to me and she’s turned me to a loyal customer. She needs to do Kylie eggnog now.” Not just eggnog, the Capital team will get her to cook some corned beef backstage for fellow host Jordan North. Sian explained: “We wind up Jordan because he’s always trying to push it on everyone. He made Kylie try it in our studio a couple of years ago and she remembered when she came back and now she’s asking for his mum’s homemade version. So we will be doing some backstage cooking with Kylie at the ball and maybe even Jordan’s mum.” Sian is looking forward to Alex Warren unleashing his mega No1 Ordinary at the bash too: “I’m hoping he brings a choir because when you hear Ordinary and that kicks in behind. I think the whole crowd would be in bits. With everything he’s been through, losing his parents I’m so glad good things happen to people like that.” Being the Capital Breakfast Show host means early bedtime for Sian but she made an exception for the Traitors finale. She told the Daily Star : “Normally, these kind of shows are quite late for me because I’m getting up at four in the morning. But I’ve been so hooked to the Traitors and I’m watching that final live, whether it kills me, because I’m not having anyone spoil it.” Which begs the question would she go on it? “I would love to it’s set the bar I don’t know if I’m even worthy. You’ve had the likes of Jonathan Ross and Stephen Fry. It’s great television, such a good mix of people. I’d be honoured to be in it.” Get that cloak ready. Tickets for Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball are on sale exclusively via the Global Player. Kylie Minogue may finally land the Christmas No1 this year after dropping XMAS - pronounced X - M - A - S - an upbeat Amazon Music Original. Amazon have become major players in festive chart battle catapulting Sam Ryder close to the top and a special CD, 7 inch gold vinyl and 12 inch zoetrope vinyl should help launch Kylie to the top. It features on the ten year anniversary version of the Kylie Christmas album now called Fully Wrapped with four new tunes. She told Radio 2: “I had one song that I needed to exercise. I needed to get it out. It’s been 10 years in the making and that song is XMAS.” Kylie came close to Xmas No1 with Jason Donovan duet Especially for You in 1988, but was pipped at the post by Cliff Richard’s Mistletoe and Wine. Gen Z least humble about their cooking skills - despite knowing fewest recipes

A poll of 2,000 adults explored their culinary aptitude and found the average person can cook 14 dishes with a recipe, or nine without. But this dropped to 10 and five respectively for Gen Z. However, when asked to rate their own cooking skills, the highest percentage to label themselves as ‘excellent’ were Gen Zers, followed by Millennials. The most common dishes all respondents were confident in their ability to whip up with or without a recipe were a simple jacket potato, omelette, or scrambled eggs on toast. Whereas the top meals they’d love to have a stab at if they were more adventurous were homemade bread, a fragrant Indian curry, and a hearty beef wellington. A spokesperson for pan brand Circulon said: “There seems to be some disconnect between Brits’ level of experience in the kitchen and how highly they rate their own skills. "As you might expect, those who know how to cook a wider variety of dishes would see themselves as more accomplished chefs. But instead, it seems that confidence is purely in the eye of the beholder.” Despite lofty ambitions, half end up cooking the same things week in week out. Four in ten kitchen confident Gen Zers will make the same dish multiple times a week – with 31% of Millennials saying the same. However, when varying what they were cooking, 19% of Millennials were motivated by a desire to try out new cookware and 25% of Gen Zers followed social media trends. Gen Zers and Millennials were also the most interested in using a wider range of kitchen gadgets and cookware as well as more innovative products such as all-in-one-pans or multicookers to improve their cooking methods. But uniting all generations was the shared experience (77%) of some sort of kitchen mishap that has put them off. With top blunders including burning the food or themselves, realising they were missing a crucial ingredient halfway through, and making such a mess it took forever to clean up afterwards. Other ways amateur chefs ruined dishes were through misreading recipes (14%), over seasoning something to the point it was inedible (11%), and having non-stick coating from a pot or pan flaking into the food (eight%). Circulon’s spokesperson added: “As a nation, we seem to be stuck in a bit of a culinary rut and end up eating a lot of the same dishes on rotation. “While I’m sure many of us see ourselves as adventurous people – it seems our taste buds aren’t always seeing the proof of this. And a lack of trust in our cookware is clearly contributing to a lack of kitchen confidence. “We shouldn’t need to be worrying about our tools letting us down, as this stands in the way of true creativity.”

The Future Starts Here: The Academy International School Introduces its International Baccalaureate

In a world that changes at an astonishing pace, education cannot be limited to the transmission of knowledge. It must inspire, open minds, and prepare young people for a global, diverse, and challenge-filled future. With this vision, The Academy International School stands out as one of Mallorca’s leading educational institutions by offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) — a globally recognised educational model for its academic excellence and comprehensive student development. On next Saturday 15th November at 10.00 a.m., The Academy International School will open its doors to welcome all families interested in learning more about the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). It will be a morning dedicated to discovering how this programme works and why it has become a worldwide educational benchmark. During the event, parents will have the opportunity to meet the IB Coordinator and the Secondary School Principal, who will explain the subjects, methodology, and values that define the spirit of The Academy. It will be a chance to see first-hand how this educational model prepares young people not only for university but also for life. A Global and Demanding Educational Model The International Baccalaureate is designed for students aged 16 to 19 who seek more than traditional academic preparation. It is a challenging and balanced programme, with rigorous assessment, that equips students to access prestigious universities and to face adult life with confidence and independence. Students study six subjects covering all areas of knowledge — languages, humanities, sciences, mathematics, and the arts — combining depth of study with a broad, global perspective. Three of these subjects are taken at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL), allowing each student to tailor the programme to their interests and strengths. However, the IB goes far beyond academic subjects. It includes three core components that shape its philosophy: the Extended Essay, an independent research project that fosters critical thinking; Theory of Knowledge (TOK), which encourages students to question how knowledge is constructed; and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), a fundamental element that links learning with social action and social engagement. Educating People, Not Just Students At The Academy, the International Baccalaureate is understood not merely as an academic programme, but as a philosophy of life. Its goal is to nurture young people who are curious, informed, and compassionate — individuals who contribute to creating a fairer and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding. The IB learner profile perfectly captures this mission: students are encouraged to be inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and principled individuals, open-minded and reflective, ready to take risks, show empathy, and maintain balance between the intellectual, emotional, and physical aspects of life. Each student learns to investigate, reflect, create, and collaborate, understanding that knowledge knows no borders and that diversity of perspectives enriches learning. In today’s globalised context, these skills make all the difference. Real Learning for the Real World At The Academy, the IB methodology combines academic rigour with the practical application of knowledge. Interdisciplinary projects, active participation, and personal reflection are part of daily life. Students learn to think independently, to question, to research, and to work collaboratively — developing essential skills for both university and life. Moreover, the programme promotes multilingualism, which is vital in an international environment. At The Academy, students study subjects in both English and Spanish, opening doors to universities across Spain and around the world. An Inspiring Environment With more than 40 years of educational experience, The Academy International School has built a solid reputation as a British centre of excellence in the Balearic Islands. Its inclusion in the International Baccalaureate community reaffirms its commitment to a modern, humane, and globally minded education. Recognised as the first British IB World School in the Balearic Islands, The Academy offers students an inspiring environment where learning is experienced with passion: spacious, light-filled classrooms, natural outdoor spaces, an international teaching team, and a close-knit, diverse school community that values both academic achievement and emotional well-being. A Day to Discover It Overall, the IB does more than prepare students for university — it prepares them for life. It teaches them to think, to feel, to coexist, and to act responsibly in a world that needs empathetic, creative, and globally minded leaders. And that is precisely what The Academy wants to offer its students. Global tech tensions overshadow Web Summit's AI and robots

Flashy AI, robotics and self-driving cars will be on show at the annual Web Summit in Lisbon from Monday, but global tensions over high-tech trade, competition and sovereignty will be weighing on the minds of entrepreneurs, investors and policymakers. Known as the "Davos for geeks", the four-day event in the Portuguese capital is set to welcome over 70,000 visitors, including 2,500 startups and 1,000 investors. - AI and chips - With major global players racing to control the supply chains behind generative artificial intelligence, an appearance by chief executive of American chip developer Qualcomm Cristiano Amon will be a hot ticket. His company recently announced a new range of AI chips designed to compete with sector heavyweight Nvidia and challenger AMD. Both firms' high-end processors are subject to restrictions from Washington on their export to China on national security grounds. Several leaders of other top AI players will also appear in Lisbon, including Microsoft President Brad Smith and Joleen Liang, co-founder of Chinese startup Squirrel AI, which is bringing the technology into classrooms. One of Europe's hottest tickets, Swedish startup Lovable, is sending boss Anton Osika to vaunt its technology that allows users to create apps and websites via a chatbot without coding experience. British dictionary publisher Collins dubbed this "vibe coding" approach its word of the year for 2025. - Health and sports - Almost 30 percent of investment in new sports technology went into AI firms in the first half of this year, investment bank Drake Star found in a study. In Lisbon, Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova and France's Caroline Garcia will be on stage talking about how AI can improve athletes' performance in their discipline. Increasingly capable devices ranging from watches and rings able to monitor sleep, heart rate or body temperature mean that tech's ability to detect initial signs of illness will be another hot topic. - Robots and autonomous cars - American robotics chiefs in Lisbon will include Amazon Robotics boss Tye Brady and Robert Playter, head of the Boston Dynamics company known from viral videos of its dog-like quadrupeds. Uber president Andrew Macdonald and Lyft's chief David Risher will for their part talk up schemes to fill the world's streets with robotaxis. Fired in part by the generative AI surge, competition is heating up to dominate automated driving. Uber has signed a partnership with chip developer Nvidia to upgrade tens of thousands of cars from different manufacturers with automation tech from 2027. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google parent company Alphabet, has said its driverless vehicles will arrive in London from next year. And several Chinese manufacturers including Baidu and Pony.ai have Europe in their sights for an automated car rollout. - Tech sovereignty - Brussels will make its presence felt at Web Summit by the presence of Henna Virkkunen, the European Commission's digital chief. The 27-nation EU is increasingly fearful for its technological sovereignty as transatlantic trade and political tensions mount. "We're more and more dependent, especially from the American hyperscalers" or major data centre operators, said Maya Noel, director general of the France Digitale network of tech companies and investment firms. She will tell attendees that European options are needed if the continent is to remain in control of its economy. As the Commission pressures American and Chinese platforms to tighten protections for underage internet users, American games publisher Roblox -- whose eponymous game is vastly popular with minors -- will outline how it plans to verify players' ages.

Las Vegas Raiders HC Pete Carroll gives a crucial injury update that's vital to the team's plans for the rest of the season

Pete Carroll gives injury update on Geno Smith, Jackson Powers-Johnson, and Dylan Parham after loss to Broncos The first one that was asked was about the starting quarterback, and rightfully so. Before the injury, he played okay, but had a few moments where he held the ball too long. After the injury, he couldn't really even move."He wanted to go back in the worst way," Carroll told reporters. "He wanted to finish the game for his teammates. He got wacked in the quad, a quad bruise or contusion. Whatever it is, he got smacked. That's just him fighting. Yeah, go back out, because who knows? Just compete and battle. He tried… I don't know, it's a thigh bruise. This is not like other injuries where he can't get back from."Smith getting injured and not being able to go, potentially anyway, would be what some fans want because it would give everyone a full game to see Kenny Pickett. That's not anyone wishing an injury upon Smith, but this team is now 2-7, and they want to see something different. Of course, the one that everyone is really wanting to know about is star offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson, who had to be helped and carried off the field by his teammates, including Maxx Crosby."He [Jackson Powers-Johnson] hurt his ankle, legit. And, I don't know all of the details, but he hurt his ankle. He will be out for a while. He [Dylan Parham] had a high ankle sprain that he tried to come back with, but he couldn't. He could move, but he couldn't push off. He tried to come back, too, but he couldn't. The right mentality," Carroll said. The offensive line started the game fine. They gave Smith plenty of time to throw, sometimes too much time. After these injuries, they really started to crumble. You hope a guy like JPJ, who is the future of the offensive line, is okay. Parham sounds like he could be good to go next week, and if not, certainly the week after. But we will see.Since beating the Tennessee Titans, the Raiders have lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in blowout - shutout fashion, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and now the Broncos. They will play the Dallas Cowboys next week. window.addEventListener('message', function (event) {if (event.data.totalpoll && event.data.totalpoll.action === 'resizeHeight') {document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-365').height = event.data.totalpoll.value;}}, false);document.querySelector('#totalpoll-iframe-365').contentWindow.postMessage({totalpoll: {action: 'requestHeight'}}, '*')

Michelle McKeown: The greenest ways to go when you go

It turns out, not very. It’s not the cheeriest topic, I’ll grant you, but if you’re reading this over a cup of tea, stay with me. For most of Irish history, we’ve done things the traditional way. A wake in the house, a funeral mass, and a plot in the local cemetery. There’s comfort in that ritual; the sandwiches, the neighbours calling in, the sense of community. But when it comes to carbon footprints, the old-fashioned burial isn’t exactly green. Traditional burials involve embalming chemicals (usually formaldehyde) and hardwood coffins. Those lawns need mowing and fertilising too. Multiply that by the thousands of burials each year and the environmental impact starts to look rather grim. Then there’s the question of space. Ireland’s cemeteries are filling up fast. Dublin is already running short of burial plots, with similar issues emerging around Cork, Galway and Limerick. The result? Prices climbing as high as €10,000 for a plot in some Dublin areas. It’s an expensive and unsustainable send-off. That might be why more and more Irish people are choosing cremation. Back in 1980, fewer than 5% of Irish funerals involved cremation. Today, it’s much higher at around 20% with new crematoria popping up across the country. But while cremation saves space, it’s hardly the eco-option it’s often assumed to be. Each cremation releases between 200-400 kilograms of CO₂, depending on the crematorium’s efficiency. Plus trace emissions from burning coffins, varnish, and the occasional metal fitting. And though filters can capture some pollutants, there’s no escaping the basic chemistry, which is that fire requires fossil fuel, and fossil fuel means carbon. So, what’s the greenest way to go when your time comes? Thankfully, a growing number of alternatives are helping us make more planet-friendly departures. Natural burial A natural burial is exactly what it sounds like, returning to the earth as gently as possible. No embalming fluid, no ornate coffin, no polished headstone. Instead, you’re wrapped in a biodegradable shroud or laid in a simple wicker or cardboard coffin and buried in a shallow grave that allows for natural decomposition. The result is quietly beautiful. Burial grounds are managed as wildflower meadows or native woodlands, supporting bees, birds, and biodiversity. There’s no noisy maintenance, no petrol mowers, just the slow, organic process of life continuing. Ireland has several natural style burial grounds already, including Woodbrook in County Wexford, Killarney Burial Ground in Kerry, and Knockma Woodland Burials in Galway. Instead of rows of headstones, you might find a meadow dotted with trees or a woodland glade. Graves can be marked with simple wooden plaques, wildflowers, or GPS coordinates. It’s the kind of resting place you might actually want to visit. Peaceful, living, and alive with birdsong. Aquamation If you like your science clean and clever, this one’s for you. Water cremation, or aquamation, or resomation, uses a heated alkaline solution to gently accelerate the body’s natural breakdown. It’s essentially the same chemistry as decomposition, just sped up to take hours instead of years. Unlike fire cremation, aquamation uses only a fraction of the energy, emits no CO₂, and produces no harmful gases. The final product is a sterile powder (similar to ashes) that can be scattered or buried. It’s already being used in parts of Britain, the US and Australia, and was famously chosen by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. In Ireland, the demand for this option could grow as Pure Reflections resomation facility opened here in 2023. In their first year of business they handled more than 100 funerals and more again the second year says Pure Reflections director, Elizabeth Oakes. Human composting Then there’s the boldest option of all: human composting. Legal in several US states, this process (technically called 'natural organic reduction') transforms a body into nutrient-rich soil. The deceased is placed in a vessel with woodchips, alfalfa, and straw. Air is circulated to encourage microbial activity, and after about six weeks, you’ve become roughly one cubic metre of clean, fertile compost. That compost can be used to nourish trees or restore degraded land. It’s carbon-negative, entirely chemical-free — and, dare I say it, poetic. It’s not available in Ireland, but attitudes are shifting. A generation ago, cremation was considered un-Irish. Now it’s mainstream. So, it’s not impossible to imagine a time when 'composting yourself' doesn’t raise an eyebrow at the pub. Mycelium coffins If you want to go out in eco-style, there’s also the Infinity Burial Suit... a biodegradable jumpsuit laced with mushroom spores that digest your body and neutralise toxins as you decompose. It sounds like something from a sci-fi film, but it’s very real. Similarly, Dutch innovators have developed mycelium coffins, grown from fungi. They take just a week to make, break down entirely within 45 days underground, and enrich the surrounding soil. So, what’s the verdict? If you died tomorrow (purely hypothetically), the most sustainable choice currently available in Ireland would be a natural burial. It’s low-carbon, local, and beautifully symbolic. In the future, water cremation and human composting could take the lead, but for now, the infrastructure simply isn’t here. In the meantime, even small choices make a difference. Opting for a biodegradable coffin, skipping embalming, or planting native trees in memory instead of marble headstones. Death is, of course, unavoidable. But the mark we leave behind doesn’t have to be. With a bit of planning, your last act on Earth could be one that gives something back, a tree, a meadow, a patch of pollinator paradise. Because as the old saying goes, you can’t take it with you; but you can leave a little something behind for the planet.
