Ty Simpson gets all sorts of love after Alabama’s dominant win over LSU

Ty Simpson didn’t post video-game numbers, but he owned the night in Tuscaloosa, and Alabama football fans let him hear it. After a 20–9 grind over the LSU Tigers, social media poured praise on the sophomore for steadying the offense, ripping a late-half touchdown to Ryan Williams, and managing the moment in a rivalry game Alabama had to have. The box score backs up the buzz. Simpson finished 21-of-35 for 277 yards and a touchdown, pacing an attack that leaned into explosives through the air when the run game stalled. Daniel Hill punched in a 4-yard score, and Conor Talty drilled field goals from 45 and 44 yards as Alabama built a 17–3 halftime cushion and never blinked. There’s not another soul in College Football that is playing like these guys right now.” Alabama outgained LSU 344–232 and won the turnover battle 2–1. The defense kept LSU out of the end zone all night, forcing field goals and flipping short fields into points. Fans loved Simpson’s poise in that pocket of chaos, especially on the quick strike before the break that flipped the game’s tempo. DeBoer put it plainly after the win, 56 rushing yards won’t cut it long-term, but also praised Simpson’s management and the defense’s backbone, via Joe Guither of Sports Illustrated. Mets urged to sign Zac Gallen away from Diamondbacks

After a disappointing 2025 campaign, the New York Mets enter a pivotal offseason as team president David Stearns faces key roster decisions. Chief among the questions awaiting the club this winter are whether to re-sign free agent Pete Alonso and how to improve the starting rotation. Some view free agent hurler Zac Gallen as a prime target for the starter-needy Mets. Assuming the Arizona Diamondbacks don’t re-sign the 30-year-old pitcher, who’s spent nearly his entire career with the team, Harold Reynolds sees the Mets making a move. “Get a healthy arm, Mets!” Reynolds suggested, when discussing Gallen’s free agency on MLB Network’s Hot Stove. “Jersey kid. I’m with you,” co-host Matt Vasgersian agreed. “I’ll also say the Mets because I think they’re going to be in on all the starting pitching this winter.” Is Zac Gallen a good fit for the Mets’ rotation? Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Gallen picked a bad time to have the worst season of his career. He became a free agent after signing a one-year, $13.5 million contract with the Diamondbacks last offseason. It was the third straight one-year contract he signed with Arizona. The All-Star righty went 13-15 while recording career lows in losses (15) ERA (4.83), K/9 (8.2), ERA+ 89 and bWAR (1.1). Despite the poor season, teams were still interested in Gallen at the trade deadline. The seventh-year veteran has proven himself a quality starter. Gallen had finished top 10 in Cy Young voting three times in the previous five seasons. He was also a key member of the Diamondbacks team that reached the World Series in 2023. The Mets need to bolster their rotation. New York found itself at a crossroads in 2025. The team’s veteran starters – Kodai Senga, David Peterson and Clay Holmes – struggled down the stretch. The Mets turned to a trio of rookies to turn things around. Ultimately the strategy failed. New York won the offseason last year, landing free agent prize Juan Soto. After a surprise run to the NLCS in 2024, the team was expected to compete for a championship. Despite spending big, the Mets came up small in a massively disappointing season. But New York has the foundation of a starting staff with Nolan McLean, Peterson and Senga. Adding Gallen to the mix could improve the Mets’ chances of rebounding in 2026.

Louisville fans down in the dumps after shocking upset loss to Cal

Louisville football looked ready to pounce on the top of the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. Especially with Wake Forest stunning the ACC’s top team Virginia. But Cal left Cardinals fans down in the dumps Saturday. The Golden Bears are now bowl eligible for the third consecutive year — beating Louisville in overtime 29-26. Particularly zeroing in on quarterback Miller Moss and head coach Jeff Brohm. “It’s kind of stunning that two of Jeff Brohm’s first three years at Louisville have been defined by subpar quarterback play. Never thought that would ever be the case,” McGavic posted. Lastly, David Furones of the Sun Sentinel believes UL will drop massively. Even despite upsetting a previous unbeaten Miami team. “So with the eight spots or so the Cardinals must drop, along with Miami rising, the head-to-head loss for the Canes against Louisville must be completely disregarded by CFP committee since they will be more than three spots away from each other, to be consistent with how UM’s win over Notre Dame is not factored,” Furones said. Louisville and Virginia go from the top of the ACC to suddenly creating a large scale logjam in the standings. The ACC rises as the most hard-to-predict conference during this College Football Playoff race.

Rangers ‘pressing’ as ‘frustrating’ winless home start reaches another historic low

Diseases have been cured. Animals have been cloned. Men have walked on the moon. But who will live to see the Rangers win another game at Madison Square Garden? More than one month since being shut out by the Penguins on opening night on Broadway, the Rangers are still searching for their first home win of the season, having extended their incomprehensible Garden skid to seven games (0-6-1) — clinching the franchise’s all-time worst season-opening winless streak — in Saturday night’s 5-0 loss the Islanders, which also ended a five-game win streak against their rival. After becoming the first team in NHL history to be held without a goal in its first three home games, the Rangers are now the first team in 98 years to be shut out in five of their first seven home games. “I feel like we’re pressing, we’re getting away from our game, we’re gripping onto our sticks a little bit too much,” Mika Zibanejad said. “We’re professionals, we get paid, we’re supposed to be able to handle it, but we’re in it. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We just got to find a way. “You want to build a feeling for teams coming in here that it’s going to be tough.” It borders on unfathomable. It would be embarrassing under any circumstances. But it is made incalculably more surreal by the Rangers’ league-best road success (7-1-1). The Blueshirts were less than 24 hours removed from a convincing win at second-place Detroit, marking their fourth win in five games. Because of that, the Garden crowd brought a clean slate to their seats, their early cheers imbued with optimism. The tension could have been released in the opening seconds, when Artemi Panarin nearly punched in the rebound of a Zibanejad slap shot. And again approaching the midway point of the first period, when Zibanejad unleashed a wrister that bounced off the crossbar. The crowd remained supportive, recognizing how close the Rangers were to breaking through. Then, Will Cuylle was stoned in front, and the Islanders raced down the ice, with Bo Horvat scoring the game’s first goal with 9:31 left in the first. The Islanders twisted the knife again and again, taking a 2-0 lead with 33 seconds left in the first period, then getting a power-play goal from Horvat with 1:18 left in the second. “We say all the right things about keep trusting the process, keep trusting the process, but the longer you go without getting the result it becomes a very hard thing, so we need to be mentally tough,” Rangers captain J.T. Miller said. “It’s a lot of zeros at home for us. We’re only human. It’s frustrating.” The home fans let them hear it, through multiple rounds of boos and half-hearted “Let’s go Rangers” cheers that failed to spread. CHECK OUT THE LATEST NHL STANDINGS AND RANGERS STATS But the soundtrack was dominated by silence, rendering the Garden — and rivalry game — unrecognizable. Playing in a conference in which no other team has fewer than three home wins, the Rangers have scored in just two of their seven home games. They have played more than 421 minutes at home and seen six shots hit the back of the net. “I wish I could put my finger on the struggles we’ve had at home to this point,” Rangers coach Mike Sullivan said. The Rangers return to the Garden on Monday to face the Predators. Then comes hope, with five of the six games to follow on the road.

Tech billionaires back startup probing gene-edited ‘designer babies’ despite US ban: report

A Silicon Valley startup backed by OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Coinbase’s Brian Armstrong is pursuing research that some fear could lead to the birth of a genetically engineered baby — a step that’s illegal under US law and banned in most countries, a report said. The company, Preventive, says its goal is to end hereditary disease by editing human embryos before birth, a claim that has ignited fierce debate over safety, ethics and the specter of designer children, according to the Wall Street Journal. Preventive, founded earlier this year by gene-editing scientist Lucas Harrington, has raised $30 million and set up headquarters in San Francisco, where it is conducting research on modifying embryos to prevent hereditary disease. The company says its mission is to prove the technology can be made safe and transparent before any attempt to create a baby is made. Altman and Armstrong are among the firm’s early investors, the Wall Street Journal reported. Altman’s husband, Oliver Mulherin, said he led their investment, calling it an effort to help families avoid genetic illness. Armstrong, who has publicly promoted embryo editing, posted that he was “excited” to back Preventive and argued it is far easier to correct a genetic defect in an embryo than to treat disease later in life. But federal law prohibits the Food and Drug Administration from considering applications for human trials involving genetically edited embryos used to start pregnancies. Harrington, who earned his doctorate under CRISPR pioneer Jennifer Doudna, denied that Preventive is preparing to implant an edited embryo or working with a couple to do so. He said the company’s focus is preclinical research on whether editing embryos can be done safely. “We are not trying to rush things,” Harrington told the Journal. “We are committed to transparency in our research and will publish our findings, whether positive or negative.” People familiar with Preventive’s operations told the Journal that the company had explored foreign jurisdictions, including the United Arab Emirates, where embryo editing might be permitted. Harrington said work outside the US was being considered only because of regulatory restrictions, not to evade oversight. The company has recruited advisers from reproductive medicine and genetics. Preventive’s website describes it as a public-benefit corporation, meaning it can legally prioritize social good alongside profit. Its charter defines that purpose as the “responsible advancement of genome editing technologies applied before birth to benefit humanity.” The effort echoes the 2018 scandal in which Chinese scientist He Jiankui created the world’s first gene-edited babies, twins whose embryos had been altered to resist HIV. He served three years in prison for illegal medical practices. Scientists say it remains unclear how the edits affected the children, who have not been publicly identified. Harrington’s venture arrives as Silicon Valley money flows into reproductive genetics. Manhattan Genomics, co-founded by biotech entrepreneur Cathy Tie, and California-based Bootstrap Bio are also exploring embryo editing. Both have drawn scrutiny from bioethicists and regulators for discussing potential trials outside the US. Critics warn that commercial embryo editing risks crossing into eugenics. “They are either lying, delusional, or both,” Fyodor Urnov, a director at the Innovative Genomics Institute at UC Berkeley, told the Journal. “These people armed with very poorly deployed sacks of cash are working on ‘baby improvement’.” Supporters insist the goal is medical, not cosmetic. Harrington and his advisers say early use cases would target devastating monogenic disorders such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell disease, in which parents who both carry the same gene mutation have no chance of conceiving a healthy child through traditional IVF. The Post has sought comment from Preventive, Altman and Armstrong.

BBC expected to apologize after using doctored footage of Trump’s Jan. 6 speech in documentary: report

The BBC is reportedly expected to apologize after using a “doctored” clip of President Trump’s Jan. 6, 2021, speech in a documentary released last year. BBC chairman Samir Shah will apologize to the UK House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee on Monday, expressing regret for misleading viewers by splicing together clips of Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally in the Panorama documentary, which aired last October, the Telegraph reported. The mea culpa comes after Michael Prescott, the British network’s former Editorial Guidelines and Standards adviser, released a damning 19-page report alleging widespread bias within the organization and highlighting warnings he issued in May about the “doctored” speech, according to the outlet. The whistleblower claimed the BBC “mangled” the clip in its documentary “Trump: A Second Chance?” to make it appear as if the president encouraged crowds to storm the Capitol. Prescott noted that the network aired footage of Trump appearing to tell rally-goers: “We’re gonna walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be there with you and we fight. We fight like hell and if you don’t fight like hell you’re not gonna have a country any more.” The clip was spliced together from three separate parts of Trump’s speech — with a nearly hour-long gap edited out to make it seem like one fluent sentence. Trump’s actual remarks were: “We’re gonna walk down, and I’ll be there with you, we’re gonna walk down, we’re gonna walk down any one of you but I think right here, we’re gonna walk down to the Capitol and we’re gonna cheer on our brave senators and congressman and women.” The BBC edited out the president saying, “I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.” About 54 minutes into Trump’s speech, he told the crowd, “We fight like hell, and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not gonna have a country anymore.” Prescott called the deceptive editing “shocking,” according to the report. “This created the impression that Trump said something he did not and, in doing so, materially misled viewers,” the ex-adviser wrote. The BBC program also made it appear as if members of the Proud Boys, an extremist right-wing group, were inspired to march toward the Capitol Building after Trump’s speech. The footage the program used of the Proud Boys heading toward the Capitol, however, was taken before Trump’s address. “It was completely misleading to edit the clip in the way Panorama aired it,” Prescott added. “The fact that [Mr. Trump] did not explicitly exhort supporters to go down and fight at Capitol Hill was one of the reasons there were no federal charges for incitement to riot.” The BBC did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment but told the Telegraph in a statement that Shah will provide a full response to committee chairs on Monday.

Edinburgh roads: New traffic lights at Hillend cause traffic chaos on surrounding road network

The new signals were installed at the three-way Hillend junction on the A702 south of the Capital earlier this year. But now there are regularly long queues of traffic on nearby parts of the road network, including the A720 City Bypass. And Colinton/Fairmilehead Tory councillor Neil Cuthbert has written to Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop, calling for an urgent review of the Hillend junction. In his letter he said: "The introduction of new traffic signals at Hillend/Damhead, while intended to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety, has resulted in severe and regular traffic disruption at the nearby Lothianburn junction. "Specifically, severe queueing has developed on the slip road from the A720 onto the A702 northbound, with vehicles frequently backing up the full length of the slip and spilling into live lanes. "This has created hazardous conditions, including limited visibility for merging traffic, blocked access to local properties and roundabouts, and heightened risks of rear-end collisions among stationary or slow-moving traffic in high-speed zones." He said southbound flows on the A702 are similarly affected, with standstill congestion extending towards Fairmilehead and blocking key junctions. "While the new traffic signals have improved safety at the Hillend junction itself, the wider traffic impacts are concerning. "With traffic volumes expected to increase significantly during the winter months and festive period, these bottlenecks will almost certainly worsen." Local resident Craig Hunter-Johnson, who lives on Biggar Road, posted a video of dashcam showing the lengthy queues of standing traffic on the Lothianburn slip and also queued traffic southbound on Biggar Road from Lothianburn to Fairmilehead crossroads. He said: "The A702 becomes a car park at peak times and it’s all as a result of fhe new traffic signals at the Hillend/Damhead junction. "We're directly affected by anything that goes on on the trunk road at Lothianburn. It has been a bit of a nightmare - all we experience now is the tooting of horns or back to back traffic, the blocking of junctions and general chaos that seems to be largely unmanaged." He said he had been in repeated contact with the road operating company BEAR about the situation. "I think they do recognise there are now other issues being faced further down the network as a result of these new lights, but they don't seem to grasp the severity of the effects being felt locally. "They claimed they were making tweaks to the signalling and that should make things easier for the network, but it hasn't. It seems that something more significant needs to happen to alleviate the pressure that is being felt. "If they want to keep the signals where they are they need to look to make urgent improvements to manage the network further along where the problems are. "I think the lights were obviously necessary and they were installed for a reason, but they can't just install that and ignore the rest of the issues they've created as a result." A Transport Scotland spokesperson said: “Alongside our trunk road operating company BEAR Scotland, we are continuing to monitor the operation of the traffic signals and the surrounding area. "We are aware of the issues being experienced by road users and BEAR Scotland has been instructed to investigate to better understand these issues. "This work will involve liaison with Midlothian and Edinburgh Councils and other stakeholders to identify any proposed measures that could be introduced to mitigate the issues being experienced and to work to provide the best solution for all road users.” Keep up to date on everything in the Capital, with the latest headlines and breaking news stories delivered straight to your inbox, with EEN’s free daily newsletter

Rocky Horror Show: Jason Donovan explains Edinburgh 'connection' ahead of Playhouse run

Jason is set to thrill audiences once again as he returns to the iconic role of Frank ‘n’ Furter in Richard O’Brien’s legendary Rocky Horror Show for the 2026 UK tour, with Edinburgh opening the tour. Jason said he feels excited to be heading back to Scotland’s capital, a place where he said he feels like he’s in “an international city”, and a venue that is perfect for the Rocky Horror Show production. He continued: “It feels exciting going to Edinburgh, and that venue, the Playhouse, is so big, it's like a rock venue. You know, it suits Rocky Horror. The irony of Rocky is that it is quite a small show. It sort of works in that venue. I'm looking forward to coming back in January too, straight off of Christmas and New Year. It's going to be cool.” Jason said there is a special connection with the city, thanks to his son going to Edinburgh University - and it could even be a future home for the Aussie star, despite the weather. He explained: “We've always, as a family, connected with that part of the world. I think if there was one city in the UK that I could probably live in, apart from London, it would be Edinburgh. I'm not quite sure about the weather, but it's a great town. I've done the festival there before. I've walked the Royal Mile. I spent a lot of time there. It's a great city. It's one of the great cities in the world.” Frank ‘n’ Furter is a character that Jason has returned to over the years saying his “love affair with the character of Frank and the cult audience” keeps drawing him back to a role that is ”just a joy to play”. And it is no wonder that he is continually drawn back to the show that sees fans dress up in costume while taking in the show. With Jason saying there are plenty of connections between himself and the show - including one connection standing out more than most. Jason met his future wife Angela Malloch, who was a stage manager for Rocky Horror, while appearing during the 25th anniversary run in 1998. Jason continued: “There are a lot of connections between me and Rocky Horror. My father did one of the first shows Richard O'Brien did after he wrote The Rocky Horror Show in The 1980s which was a show called The Stripper in Sydney. “There are a lot of Aussies that have been involved in Rocky Horror as well. So, you know, Jim Sharman, Brian Thompson, the designer of Rocky Horror, who really gave it that look that became so iconic in a way. “I actually did Rocky in Perth in Australia in the 90s as well. There's a lot of ironic sort of connections for me that make this show special. “But above all, there are not many roles and not many shows you can do eight times a week and still enjoy performing it, and I get to be a rock star every night, happy days.” Jason Donovan will perform as Frank ‘n’ Furter between January 6 and 10 2026 at the Playhouse.

Ilya Sorokin continues strong stretch since Islanders’ goalie coach change with Rangers shutout

When reporters filed into the visitor’s dressing room at Madison Square Garden after the Islanders’ 5-0 win, Ilya Sorokin was deep in conversation with Sergei Naumovs. After Sorokin’s first shutout of the season, it can be presumed the talk was more congratulatory than anything else. Coincidence or not, Sorokin’s performance has shot upward since Naumovs was elevated to the Islanders’ goalie coach role six games into the season, and Saturday, when he turned aside 33 shots against the Rangers, marked the best the Islanders’ netminder has played in a long time. “I think he’s playing with a lot of confidence,” Islanders coach Patrick Roy said. “We made the goalie coach change — I think he’s very comfortable with Sergei. They seem to connect really well. It’s good for the team, good for him.” Naumovs has plenty of experience with Sorokin, having been his coach at CSKA Moscow in the KHL, as well as his personal goalie coach. Doing it in the NHL, though, is different. “It was six years ago, that’s a long time. And we don’t have [practice] time like in the KHL,” Sorokin said. “So it’s more games here and we try to use practice time well and we can do this.” Certainly, Sorokin is making the most of the practice time he has. He’s been noticeably more aggressive in his crease since the change and was terrific in tracking the puck Saturday. His reaction time, always a strong point, was as quick as ever. During the first period, with the Rangers all over the Islanders, Sorokin kept his team in it, and during the third, as the Islanders defended a three-goal lead, he never allowed the door open for a comeback. CHECK OUT THE LATEST NHL STANDINGS AND ISLANDERS STATS It was a far cry from the Sorokin of a month ago, who struggled through his first four starts looking like a shell of himself. “Not really change,” he said of his mindset. “It’s hard to say. Just continue working, maybe on small details. But total is the same.” Islanders coach Patrick Roy put his lines and pairs in a blender Saturday. Mathew Barzal was back at center between Jonathan Drouin and Simon Holmstrom, while Bo Horvat was with Emil Heineman and Kyle Palmeri. Anders Lee, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Anthony Duclair comprised the third line, while Maxim Tsyplakov, Casey Cizikas and Cal Ritchie made up the fourth. Matthew Schaefer was on the top pair for the first time in his career next to Ryan Pulock. Adam Pelech played next to Tony DeAngelo, and Alexander Romanov was on Scott Mayfield’s left. Tsyplakov got back in the lineup for the first time since Oct. 30 in Carolina, having been a healthy scratch for the past four games.

Suns’ Jalen Green leaves game with yet another hamstring injury

After Jalen Green missed the last eight games with a hamstring injury, the Phoenix Suns star guard exited the game with the same injury. He grabbed his right hamstring during the second quarter against the Los Angeles Clippers. He went for a drive, got by James Harden, and made a pass to Ryan Dunn, who was wide open in the corner. Immediately after, he grabbed the same hamstring and was hobbling towards the bench. Within the next possession, Green was being helped to the locker room. It’s unfortunate news for the Suns, who missed Green for the season opener and the next seven games. In only one game, he showed immediate chemistry with teammate Devin Booker. he presented a true downhill threat and someone who can create his own shot. In that game, Green posted 29 points in 23 minutes and revealed what all the hype was. Jalen Green’s injury is gut-wrenching for the Suns Considering this was his second game back from injury, it’s telling that he wasn’t fully recovered. However, Suns head coach Jordan Ott has been cautious about Green’s return because it was a soft tissue injury. It wasn’t as easy to diagnose and to give the proper treatment for. At times, some thought that Ott was being overly cautious with his young guard. Still, the team has shown promise without Green. For instance, Booker is having an All-NBA season and has been extremely effective as a scorer and playmaker. Guys like Royce O’Neale and Grayson Allen are having career years. Young players like Ryan Dunn and Collin Gillespie are rising to the occasion. Losing Green sucks, but it could be a next-man-up mentality for a team loaded with people looking for any opportunity. For the former Houston Rockets guard, it’ll be going back to square one. But this aggravation could be something minor or something extreme. No one will know until the official injury diagnosis comes out.

Daniel Suarez Insists NASCAR Has Done More Harm Than Good By Restricting Cup Drivers in Lower Series

There’s clear distinction between the Cup and Xfinity Series in NASCAR, and drivers competing in the Cup are a step above. Do they get to show it often? Not really. And Daniel Suarez feels that it’s actually not good for the sport. When Kyle Larson stormed to victory in an Xfinity race in Bristol, beating Carson Kvapil by more than two seconds, he didn’t mince words afterward. On Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour podcast, he said he wanted to embarrass the Xfinity Series drivers and NASCAR to remind everyone what Cup-level racing looks like. Larson’s remarks lit a spark across the garage, even drawing a nod from Daniel Suarez, who once fought Cup regulars in Xfinity. Suarez agreed with Larson’s sentiment about raising the bar. Under current rules, Cup drivers with more than three years of full-time experience can enter no more than five Xfinity or Craftsman Truck Series races per season. NASCAR created the rule to prevent Cup veterans from dominating the feeder series and taking home most of the prize money. While well-intentioned, the rule also stripped younger drivers of a valuable measuring stick, the chance to battle the best before joining them. Suarez, who earned his first Xfinity win against Kyle Busch and claimed his championship while racing Larson, argued that the old system hardened him. “The cup drivers back then, they were allowed to race as many races as they wanted. So, I believe that I would have won way more races if there were no Cup drivers like there is right now… My curriculum will look way nicer, but I wouldn’t have learned what I learned. Like I was racing against the best of the best every single week. So, it’s different now.” “I don’t dislike the new rules of NASCAR of limiting the Cup guys. With that being said, now the guys from Xfinity and Trucks, they go to Cup and the jump is bigger… because they don’t really know where is the bar… They think that okay that’s it. But once they go to a cup series, a completely different level, not just in drivers, but in engineers in big cruise and everything.” That gap is soon to be narrowed again. NASCAR announced a policy change for 2026, according to which, full-time Cup veterans with over three years of experience can run up to 10 races in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (name to be changed from Xfinity), double the current limit. In the Craftsman Truck Series, they’ll be permitted eight starts, a three-race increase. However, restrictions will remain for playoff events, keeping the regular-season finales and postseason free of Cup interference. With the adjustment, NASCAR insiders and drivers hope the presence of Cup stars will accelerate the development of younger talent, especially vital now that entry ages are dropping. Beginning in 2026, the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series will allow 17-year-olds to compete on road courses and ovals 1.25 miles or shorter, while the Truck Series will lower its minimum to 16 under the same conditions. The Cup Series will retain its age limit of 18. For a sport that lost its testing freedom decades ago, “seat time” is still the greatest teacher. Letting rising stars rub fenders with proven Cup racers is an education. And for drivers like Larson and Suarez, that’s what keeps the ladder system honest: learning the ropes from those who already know how to climb them.

Trendon Watford does best Ben Simmons impression in career-best game vs. Raptors

After cobbling together minutes with two-way players like Dominik Barlow and Jabari Walker at the power forward spot as Paul George recovers from a knee injury, the Philadelphia 76ers decided to give Trendon Watford the nod at starting power forward in their first game back in black, gold, and red jerseys, and were immediately rewarded for that decision with a career-best two-way barrage. Taking the court against a Toronto Raptors team that just took care of the Atlanta Hawks the night before, the excitement in South Philadelphia was at an all-time high, with a returning Hip-Hop teaming up with Franklin for a mascot one-two punch as the 2000-01 team was celebrated on the court and throughout the game. Watford, taking the court alongside his good friend Tyrese Maxey, came out of the gate hot and turned in an all-time great effort at the power forward spot, scoring 20 points, a career-high 17 rebounds, and 10 assists on the way to his first-ever triple-double. Goodness, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward-sized player dishing out passes and bringing in rebounds on the regular? Is it too soon to compare that to Ben Simmons? Considering Watford has already made four 3-pointers in six games of action, that might not be the perfect comp. Now granted, this is just one game. Watford hasn’t played this well in any of the other games he’s played in so far this season, and is still working his way back from a hamstring injury he suffered in the preseason. He could fall back to earth in the 76ers’ next game against the Detroit Pistons and may be relegated to the bench regardless of when PG returns to the starting lineup in the future. Still, if Watford is stuffing the stat sheet with points, assists, and rebounds while knocking down the occasional 3 when he’s open, he will be a top-9 player on the 76ers alongside Quentin Grimes, Jared McCain, and Adem Bona, and will have every opportunity to contribute for Nick Nurse’s squad. Family of Scots woman killed by partner bailed to her home demand change in law

The parents of Claire Inglis have demanded urgent new laws after it was revealed almost half of women murdered last year were killed by their partner or ex-partner. Christopher McGowan was jailed for the brutal killing of Claire, six weeks after being freed to live at the flat she shared with her son. McGowan , who had 39 convictions, including aggravated domestic assault , had been bailed to the mum’s Stirling home three times. Claire’s parents Iain and Fiona have demanded action. Fiona said: “Every week we hear about violence against another woman, another girl. It’s an epidemic. Claire had only known McGowan for eight weeks. “In that time he was able to manipulate her, to isolate her from her family, to get into her home and then kill her. “In Claire’s case, he was granted bail to her home and it’s absolutely imperative that offenders being bailed to a house with women and children stop now. It can’t wait.” A Bill tabled by MSP Pam Gosal would mean those convicted of domestic abuse would be subject to controls similar to those on the sex offenders’ register. Last week we told how the number of female homicide victims in Scotland rose last year to 15 – seven were killed by a partner or ex. Last month, at First Minister’s Questions, Tory leader Russell Findlay urged John Swinney to release the social work report which says Claire, 28, and her son were “invisible in the system”. Findlay said a “major flaw” is that social workers “are not obliged to verify bail addresses.” Swinney later said: “If the report can be released I am very happy for that to be the case.” Justice -Secretary Angela Constance said: “The FM has written to the Lord Advocate asking if it is possible for there to be further -engagement with Mr and Mrs Inglis about the content of the social work report instructed by the Crown Office and -Procurator Fiscal Service. “We are always willing to explore any options to reduce domestic abuse.” She added a new bail test introduced in May “makes clear the court should specifically consider the protection of the victim from a risk of harm when making decisions on bail”.

Scot's 2 years of 'heat pump hell' ends in refund as electrics declared 'unsafe'

An army veteran who went through two years of “heat pump hell” is set to be refunded after the Sunday Mail intervened. Dave Mundy, 55, was facing debt collectors for refusing to pay an outstanding bill for a heating system in his home which did not work. But after our intervention , Heat Pumps Scotland Ltd is dropping a civil suit against him and has agreed to repay the government loan Dave, of Gartcosh, Lanarkshire, took out to purchase the heat pump. The firm has also pledged to cover the reinstallation of Dave’s old gas boiler. It follows a torrid two years for eco-conscious Dave and his wife Mira after engineers botched a green energy refit. The couple have no central heating or hot water after experts at regulator NAPIT visited their home last week and found their electrical system to be unsafe – literally padlocking Dave out of his own fusebox due to the risk. Dave said: “I’ve won now, and I’m not after compensation, which a lot of people would be. I’m getting my boiler back in. “But has the government won? No. Can we now look at this and say this is a failed heat pump installation. Yes we can. "I’ve come into this embracing the government’s renewable initiatives. But I was going to be left with a loan hanging around my neck and an unsafe installation.” Dave hopes to have his old heating system restored in short order - but with temperatures dropping he is currently reliant on a wood-burning stove to warm his home which he installed as an alternative after the botched heat pump fitting. He added: "It makes you think of Oliver Twist, all of us huddled around the fire in my modern house. “The NAPIT inspectors locked me out of the heating system and shut it down because it's unsafe. "But that means this has been running in an unsafe way for well over a year. "Having a lock-out tag next to your hoover is quite bizarre. The thing that worries me is how many other unsafe installations are potentially out there?" In November 2023, Heat Pump Scotland Ltd visited Dave’s home and advised a HISA Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) could be integrated with his existing solar-powered water tank. As soon as the installation was carried out last June, taking out his gas boiler in the process, faults began with the water tank breaking down and his ceiling flooding. The firm later admitted the two systems weren’t compatible. But after Dave refused to pay the outstanding £4520, he was contacted by debt collectors who threatened to seize assets if he did not pay up and later faced off against the company in court. In a statement, Heat Pumps Scotland Ltd said: "We are happy we have come to an agreement with the customer to bring this matter to a close. "It is unfortunate that contract disputes occur between installers and customers but by working together we have come to an agreement. This is a positive outcome for both parties." A spokesman for NAPIT said: "While this case remains under active investigation by NAPIT, we cannot comment on the specifics of the case. "NAPIT is continuing to support Mr Mundy to seek a resolution to his complaint with their installer to ensure the safety and compliance of the installation." The SNP government's Home Energy Scotland scheme offers grants and loans of up to £15,000 to install heat pumps. Consumer Scotland warned earlier this year of rising complaints over a lack of expertise and "substandard workmanship" by some traders.

The celebrated drummer and songwriter, 70, collaborated with longtime bandmates Jim Moginie and Hamish Stuart, and enlisted his daughters Gabriella and Lex Hirst to contribute vocals on the emotionally resonant four-track release. Despite the challenges, the sessions became a space of defiant creativity and familial healing. Gabriella, an artist based in Berlin, delivers the lead vocal on the EP’s title track—a tender, melancholic ballad inspired by Hirst’s diagnosis. “May you live to be a hundred years or more,” she sings, with her father joining for the final line: “May you take another turn around the sun.” “I was just working it up at home with an incomplete lyric and Ella was out for a while looking after me and checking up on all her arty friends in Sydney and she came in and said ‘Dad, I really like this song you’re singing and I said, ‘Well, here’s the rough lyric, you sing it,’” Hirst said. Lex Hirst lends backing vocals to the opening track, “First Do No Harm,” while Hoodoo Gurus bassist Rick Grossman makes a surprise appearance on the EP as well. Hirst, who co-founded Midnight Oil in the 1970s, has also led acclaimed side projects like Ghostwriters, The Break, and Backsliders. The band played their final show in October 2022 at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion. A Hundred Years or More follows 2023’s Red Continent and will be released Nov. 14.
