Test newbie misses out in Tassie

Days after being included in the 15-man Australian squad for the opening Test against England, the Tasmanian opener was sent into bat by South Australian skipper Nathan McSweeney in Hobart. The left-handed opener took 11 balls to get off the mark, which he did with a boundary, facing an SA bowling attack including fellow squad member Brendan Doggett. Weatherald struck four more boundaries as he scooted to 23, before being bowled by Liam Scott, chopping on an attempted cut shot in his quest for more runs. His exit came as Australian Test ace Mitchell Starc secured an early wicket for NSW at the SCG, removing Harry Dixon LBW. Starc was joined in the stacked NSW team by fellow Test quick Josh Hazlewood and spin star Nathan Lyon, with Steve Smith, who will captain the Australian team in the absence of injured Pat Cummins, also in action. Every member of Australia’s squad except veteran opener Usman Khawaja are playing Sheffield Shield games at the SCG, WACA and Bellerive Oval which began on Monday. Smith has already hit one red-ball century with veteran spinner Nathan Lyon turning out for his fourth Shield game of the season. Scott Boland, who will play for Australia in the opening Test covering for Cummins, is also playing his third Shield game, while Marnus Labuschagne hasn’t missed for Queensland compiling three centuries which hastened his Australian recall. Travis Head and Alex Carey are also playing for SA against Tasmanian while Cameron Green is set to return to bowling for WA at the WACA against Queensland. The huge Australian presence comes amid strong criticism of England’s plans to play a single game, against an England A outfit, as their preparation for the opening Test which begins on November 21. But Lyon didn’t want to add to the pile on. “England can prepare however they want to prepare,” he said before the Shield game. “I am not worried about how they’re preparing or anything to do with them until the morning of November 21.”

Ben Talintyre November 10, 2025 - 8:15AM Share via Email Share on Facebook Share on Whatsapp Copied URL to clipboard Lewis Hamilton has labelled F1 stewards as a “complete joke” as he was forced to retire in what was a nightmare Brazil Grand Prix for the honorary Brazilian. It was a miserable afternoon for the seven-time world champion, who dropped down the order all the way down to 18th on the run to Turn 1 on the opening lap following contact with Carlos Sainz. An early safety car was called on lap two after Gabriel Bortoleto crashed again as he was squeezed by Lance Stroll and had nowhere to go except to hit the wall. Meanwhile, Hamilton was made to pit to get a new front wing, while Bortoleto’s car was still being cleared. However, the Ferrari driver’s day would soon get even worse, with Hamilton left frustrated and getting on the team radio after his car was sliding about in the wet conditions. “Mate, I’m going to crash out here. I’ll keep trying. The car is crazy unstable,” he said on his team radio. Lewis Hamilton had a weekend to forget in Brazil. Image: F1 He soon complained again about his car. “It’s likely I’m going to end up in the barriers,” Hamilton said midway through the race. “The rears. The rear is dropping off big time.” If he wasn’t having a bad enough day, the F1 stewards then hit him with a five-second time penalty on lap 29 for that early collision with Colapinto in the opening lap. And the F1 champion, who also criticised the stewards after the Mexico City Grand Prix, unloaded on his team radio: “These guys are a joke. A complete joke.” “The car moved over on me so I clipped my wing.” Copied URL to clipboard His nightmare day was soon over on lap 40 as he retired from the race. Speaking to F1 TV after the race, Hamilton was at a loss for words at what he simply said was “a weekend to forget”. “I mean, jeez, this is definitely a weekend to forget. It’s a shame because I love Brazil and also, you know, just everyone in the team, every single person in the team, they turn up every week and give it their absolute best and to come away with nothing, to not finish a race the second time in the year, it’s really devastating and I feel terrible for the team,” he said. I just have to … We’ll get back up tomorrow and just give it another go.” Ferrari teammate Leclerc’s race also ended prematurely. Meanwhile, McLaren’s Lando Norris wrapped up what can only be described as a dream weekend for his title hopes with another win. Socceroos coach explains shock squad choices

Not for the first time in his Socceroos tenure, Popovic has raised eyebrows with some of the players he has chosen in his squad for the upcoming games against Venezuela (Saturday, Houston) and Colombia (Wednesday week, New York). Among the biggest selection shocks in the 26-man squad named last Friday were teenage defender James Overy, who plays for Manchester United’s youth team, Melbourne City’s 22-year-old goalkeeper, and Poland-based striker Deni Juric. “Maybe for you guys, it’s surprising some of the selections, but I’ve said many times, we will search everywhere,” Popovic said on Monday. “We watch all the players, even when they think that we’re not watching, We’re aware of how they’re playing and what form they’re in. “If they’re in the squad now, they’re a chance for the World Cup. Yes, there are some players that obviously can be more long-term prospects, can be prospects for after the World Cup, maybe the (2027) Asian Cup, and certainly the next cycle, but that doesn’t rule them out of this World Cup coming up.” They include 18-year-old Perth product Overy, whose selection was perhaps also aided by three defenders – Jordan Bos, Jacob Italiano and Alessandro Circati – being injured. Popovic watched Overy represent Australia at this year’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile and liked what he saw. “I knew what he could do. Watching him closely in Chile, I was impressed, in particular, coming in, playing (Australia’s) second match, and … starting at left back, he showed a lot of composure, a lot of maturity for his age. “Then he went to the right (side of defence) in the third game, and then we started really monitoring him. “We have good contacts at Man United, so we know what he’s doing at training. We know how much he trains with the first team. He’s getting games in the under 18s, and the under 21s, and I just thought he was worth having a look at. “I’m very open-minded with what that looks like for the immediate future and obviously long term.” Popovic had similar high hopes for the uncapped Beach, who was selected at the expense of Joe Gauci to be among the three keepers in the squad with skipper Mat Ryan and Paul Izzo. “He (Beach) has been playing very well. He’s gaining more experience, more maturity, and there’s a lot of responsibility on his shoulders, and he’s handling that well,” the Socceroos boss said. “He’s dealing with the three (A-League and AFC Champions League Elite) games in a week which Melbourne City have had. “I want to see him. I want to see him with us, and at the moment, he’s ahead of the other keepers (not in the squad), and that’s what we want. We want competition. “Players know that if you perform, you give yourself a chance and they can see with us that everyone can get a chance to come into camp. “The players that miss out, we haven’t forgotten them. We will keep watching them, and we’ll see when it gets to that time to select a squad who we believe is ahead in the pecking order at that time, (and they) will go to the World Cup.” Popovic said Juric, the 28-year-old younger brother of former Socceroos marksman Tomi Juric, had a “very good physical profile”. “He was playing in Slovenia. There he was scoring so many goals, but the level of the league is quite low, so it was very hard to judge, but we’ve watched him now since he’s gone to Poland (to play for Wisła Płock), and he looks quicker, he looks more powerful and definitely looks fitter,” Popovic said. “He’s scoring goals, assisting goals, and he’s in a team that’s challenging for the title at the moment. It’s maybe not a league that everyone sees regularly, so they’re not aware of how he’s playing, but he deserves his opportunity.”

Outrage over wild AFL change

Nearly 80 per cent of AFL fans don’t support the change, which opens the door for the teams that finish ninth and 10th in the regular season to win a “knockout” final on the weekend, which had become the pre-finals bye. As the plan was confirmed, the AFL Fans Association called on the AFL Commission to reconsider the proposal to introduce it in 2026, with the likes of Richmond champion Matthew Richardson aghast. “More than half our teams make the finals. Seriously?” he wrote on social media. But Dillon was adamant the plan was designed to give fans more “games of consequence” during the season as clubs jostle for positions until the final round and had the full backing of the clubs. “By expanding the final series, we’ll have all games of consequence during the home in a way which we know our fans love,” he said. “We know fans will go to those games. We know they’ll watch them in numbers. But what we also know is that, particularly final series this year where we had pretty much every game as a close enough to a sellout, our fans love finals games.” Dillon was adamant the teams tat finished ninth and 10th in 2025, the Western Bulldogs and Sydney, would be worthy of a finals spot. “I think if you look at the ladder over the last few years, and you see the teams that have been finishing in ninth and 10th, and this year’s a great example, you had the Bulldogs won well more than 50 per cent of the games, had a percentage of over 130,” he said. “And you had the Swans who won over 50 per cent of the games, so I don’t think it rewards mediocrity. What it does is provide opportunities and more games of consequence.” The Bulldogs won 14 games in 2025, a number that could have been enough to finish as high as fifth in some recent seasons, but needed 15 wins to play finals. Dillon confirmed that a wildcard finals win would be counted as a finals win for all clubs, and the move would put a premium on every finishing position inside the top eight, with teams above seventh to get a week off still. “What it does do then is actually make that gap between sixth and seventh, that’ll be something that the clubs will be striving for,” he said. “We’ll see during the finals, you’ll have a big difference between first and second because you get the home final, third and fourth, you get the double chance, fifth and sixth, you’ll get that week off, and then seventh and eighth, you’ll get to host a home wildcard final.” But the reaction was swift from the fans association, which declared 77 per cent of fans did not want the change and called for an immediate review. “Fans aren’t opposed to innovation,” AFLFA president Ron Issko said. “But the wildcard proposal has raised questions about fairness and the home-and-away season. We encourage the AFL Commission and AFL executives to review this proposal, share the rationale, and ensure any decision balances innovation with what supporters value most. “Fans have made their views clear. We hope the commission and executives consider this feedback carefully while balancing the needs of the competition, players, and supporters alike.”

Oscar Piastri has fallen apart in the back-end of the Formula 1 season and fans are convinced an Australian burger chain is to blame. The Australian’s hopes of winning a maiden F1 world championship are all but over after a disastrous penalty ruined his charge at the Brazilian Grand Prix on Monday morning. His McLaren teammate Lando Norris is now 24 points clear with three races and one sprint race left in the 2025 season. The 24-year-old’s campaign has been flipped on its head, having led the F1 drivers’ championship standings by 34 points following the Dutch Grand Prix in August. Everything has changed for Piastri since the drama-charged Italian Grand Prix in September where two significant developments occurred. Both those developments have since sprouted conspiracy theories — and the most desperate of those theories is Piastri’s so-called “burger curse” with Aussie healthy burger chain Grill’d. The former Alpine driver has become the chain’s highest-profile ambassador, cooking up his own signature burger, which was first put on the menu in February. Oscar Piastri shows off his burger. Photo: Facebook. Oscar Piastri shows off his burger. Photo: Facebook. The signature “OP81” burger — highlighted by a charcoal bun, carrot and chipotle sauce — disappeared from the menu earlier this year. However, with Piastri catching fire throughout the middle stages of the season, the burger re-appeared on the menu in September. Its return was marked with a buy one get one free promotion for Mondays following weekends where Piastri scored a spot on the podium. Grill’d proudly spruiked the return of the promotion the day after the Italian Grand Prix on September 7. Since then Piatri has failed to achieve a podium finish. You can watch the swirling conspiracy theory in the video player above. Copied URL to clipboard Piastri says he 'can't disappear' in sad post-race interview Oscar Piastri says he has... While championship rivals Norris and Max Verstappen have roared to race wins, Piastri’s best finish in the past five grands prix is fourth. This includes Monday’s race in Sao Paulo where he received a controversial 10-second penalty which may have cost him a spot on the podium. That lean run appears to have put Grill’d in a jam. The Aussie restaurant giant has since changed the terms of the promotion to allow diners to activate the two-for-one deal after races where Piastri reaches the finish line. There have been plenty of brutal sights, comments and numbers to show how bleak things are for Piastri right now — but Grill’d’s move may be the most brutal of them all. News.com.au has contacted Grill’d for comment. Fans are convinced the curse is real. The theory was spread further on Monday morning when American motorsport commentator Taylor Kitchen shared a video through motorsport.com, describing the ill-fated promotion as “a burger promo with a curse”. You can watch the video in the video player above. Oscar Piastri’s McLaren since Italy. Photo by Lars Baron/Getty Images) “Right after his last podium in Monza, they (Grill’d) posted about it on September 16th and since then nothing,” she said. “He’s fallen out of the championship lead and on Saturday (Sunday AEDT) Grill’d posted the promo with updated rules.” She went on to say: “Those burgers are ready to be cooked. And so might Piastri’s championship hopes as the gap to his teammate continues to grow.” Other fans have light-heartedly shared the same theory. One posted on X: “Are we going to talk about how that demonic australian carrot burger place needs to end their podium offer”. Another wrote: “At this point grill’d is gonna change their piastri burger promotion again to ‘free burger after oscar finishes the formation lap’”. One X user wrote: “Oscar piastri needs to call Grill’d and get them to take that burger off the menu RIGHT NOW! Nothing good has happened for him when they’ve had that Mclaren monstrosity on the menu”. The terms and conditions for the promo on Grill’d’s website on Monday showed the promotion will continue for Relish members through to December 8. The other conspiracy theory to emerge since the Italian Grand Prix is rumours of growing favouritism within the McLaren garage towards Norris. During the race, Piastri was told by the team to allow Norris to overtake him. The request was made because Norris had suffered a slow pit stop after the team had inadvertently given Piastri an “undercut” to pass his teammate. Since then the team has been all at sea trying to manage the so-called “Papaya Rules” designed to stop the two drivers from crossing the line in wheel-to-wheel racing scenarios. Meanwhile, Piastri has previously been very happy to spruik his signature burger. More Coverage ‘Complete joke’: Lewis Hamilton goes nuclear Ben Talintyre Rumour swirls as Dusty set for comeback Grill’d released the fancy beefburger before the Australian Grand Prix this year, writing: “We got together with our homegrown F1 hero to create a protein-packed burger that tastes as good as it looks. “Expect fresh and fiery flavours, flame-grilled, and fully satisfying. When our Aussie hero races on home soil, Grill’d is the food behind the fast.” The orange and charcoal concoction has previously been a hit with diners - but it may not stay that way if the driver is unable to pull himself out of this slump. Oscar Piastri Responds Fiercely After Controversial Brazilian Grand Prix Penalty Threatens Title Hopes

Oscar Piastri defiantly responded to a 10-second penalty that has severely jeopardized his championship aspirations at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The troubles for Piastri began early in the race when, on the sixth lap, he collided with Kimi Antonelli. This incident caused Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to crash out, prompting Piastri to, in frustration, declare, “I can’t disappear,” as he and other F1 drivers criticized the Italian’s role in the mishap. During a restart, Piastri attempted an aggressive move by steering his McLaren inside at Turn 1. Unfortunately, he locked his brakes, resulting in a collision with Antonelli’s Mercedes. This mistake dashed Piastri’s podium ambitions, relegating him to a fifth-place finish, trailing behind Lando Norris, Antonelli, Max Verstappen, and George Russell. Expressing his frustration, Piastri voiced over the radio, “He left me with no space.” He added, “I can’t disappear, but the decision by the stewards stands.” It followed a sprint race crash that had already cost Piastri points earlier in the weekend. Afterwards, Piastri said Antonelli gave him ‘no space’ and that he ‘had a clear opportunity’. ‘I had a very clear opportunity. I went for it. The other two on the outside braked quite late,’ he said. ‘There was obviously a bit of a lock-up into the corner, but that was because I could see Kimi was not going to give me any space.’ Leclerc agreed and said Piastri did not deserve all the blame, adding that Antonelli ‘knew Oscar was on the inside’ and could have avoided contact. He described his retirement as ‘very frustrating’ after starting from third and missing a likely podium. ‘Oscar was optimistic, but Kimi knew that Oscar was on the inside, I think,’ Leclerc said. ‘And he kind of did the corner like Oscar was never there. And for me, the blame is not all on Oscar. ‘Yes, it was optimistic, but this could have been avoided. I’m frustrated. ‘At the end of the day I’m not angry with any of Oscar or Kimi, these things happen. ‘But yeah, I wouldn’t go as far as saying that it’s all of Oscar’s fault. I don’t think it is.’ The penalty widened the gap between Piastri and Norris to 24 points in the championship standings. With only three races remaining, Norris can now finish runner-up in each event and still secure the title even if Piastri wins every remaining race. Piastri must outscore Norris heavily in Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi to keep his hopes alive. Norris did not directly comment on the Piastri incident, but he did say that Kimi Antonelli would need to ‘thank Charles’ for keeping his teammate out of the race on team radio. ‘Oh my God! You have to thank Charles!’ Norris said while watching the replay after the race. Sky Sports F1 analyst Jamie Chadwick argued that Piastri did not deserve the penalty. ‘The person that hasn’t necessarily used all the room available to him is Kimi for me. And so I actually am on the sort of side of where I think Oscar has been hard done by here,’ she said. ‘He’s not, in my opinion, locked up because he’s out of control,’ she said. ‘He’s locked up because he’s seen Kimi turning in a bit on him and his natural reaction is to press the brake pedal a little bit harder, turn as much left as you can to get as close to the white line, causing that lockup. ‘But for me, even with the lock-up, he’s still as far to the white line as he can be and still hasn’t been given the room by Kimi.’ However, leading analyst Martin Brundle said the right decision had been made. ‘That’s the standard penalty,’ he said on the Sky Sports broadcast. ‘There were no mitigating circumstances, so I’m not surprised. He had to have a go, there’s no doubt about that, but the penalty is a fair cop.’

‘Enhancing Their Strike Power’ – Workers Hustle to Get Lights Back on After Massive Attack

President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday assured Ukrainians that repair workers were scrambling non-stop to restore power grids across the country after weekend Russian airstrikes, described as the most devastating attacks on energy since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2023, knocked out utilities across the country. Approximately 100,000 households in the Kharkiv region alone have been left in the dark after Russian air strikes that lasted into Saturday. Power cuts scheduled by Ukrenergo will remain in effect until Monday at least, the state grid operator said. “Repair crews are working almost around the clock in most regions,” Zelensky said in his evening address. “Restoration efforts are ongoing, and although the situation is difficult, thousands of people are involved in stabilizing the system and repairing the damage,” he said. Of the 458 drones and 45 missiles launched by Russia on Saturday morning and Friday night, Ukraine’s air force said it downed 406 drones and nine missiles. Homes in the northeastern and central regions of Ukraine were the most drastically affected. Around 100,000 clients were without electricity, water and heating in the Kharkiv region, Restoration Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said. In the Poltava region, power was mostly restored on Sunday but damaged equipment left parts of its main city still in the dark, local authorities said. Energy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk said the wave of attacks, which killed four people, marked “one of the most difficult nights” for Ukrainian energy since the Russian invasion began in February 2022. Deputy Energy Minister Artem Nekrasov said that Moscow has switched tactics, striking simultaneously generation facilities as well as power transmission and distribution systems, he said. “This complicates the prompt restoration of normal power supply and the normal operation of the energy system,” he said. Zelensky warned that Moscow ‘s forces were “enhancing their strike power by using more ballistic missiles.” Kyiv’s response While Moscow repeats that the intended targets in Ukraine are part of its “military industrial base”, Kyiv has focused its attacks within Russia on oil and energy facilities. Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure have left more than 20,000 people without power in several Russian border regions, AFP reported. Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said the “electricity and heating supply network has suffered severe damage” in the regional capital of the same name. “Several streets are affected by power issues... More than 20,000 residents are without electricity,” he posted on Telegram. In the Kursk region, “a fire broke out at one of the power plants in the village of Korenevo”, cutting power to 10 localities, Governor Alexander Khinshtein said on Telegram. A fire also broke out at a heating facility in the southern Voronezh region, according to Governor Alexander Gusev.

Seahawks Prove NFC Dark Horse Status With Dominant Win Over Cardinals

Is the NFL potentially sleeping on the Seattle Seahawks as a clear Super Bowl favorite? More news: Raiders Fire Assistant Coach Amid Disastrous 2025 Season It appears this NFC West team continues to get stronger each week, and they showcased that with a dominant win over the Arizona Cardinals. Now, the Cardinals are a much worse team on paper, but they are certainly not the worst in the league or in the NFC. Despite that, the Seahawks marched into Lumen Field and showcased why they could be the dark horse candidate for the Super Bowl. Sam Darnold continues to prove the Minnesota Vikings made a mistake by letting him walk, as he put together a performance of 10-for-12 passing attempts, 178 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Minus the turnover, he played the part perfectly, allowing the dynamic run game and defense to shine. On the ground, the Seahawks once again used a committee that included Zach Charbonnet picking up 83 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries, Kenneth Walker II picking up 67 yards on 14 carries, and George Holani securing 31 yards and one touchdown on seven carries. In total, the committee running back corps picked up 198 yards and two touchdowns on 48 carries. Despite the small bounce back, the Seahawks padded their own lead with 44 total points. In their second lopsided win in back-to-back weeks, this team has been surprising to watch. It isn’t the fact that Darnold’s play in 2025 proves that 2024 was no fluke, or the fact that the run game continues to find ways to implement multiple playmakers. It’s the totality of coaching and players on both sides of the ball. The Seahawks are tied with the Los Angeles Rams for the best record in the NFC with 7-2, and both teams are showcasing elite skills. It could be down to the pair of NFC West combatants when all is said and done in the NFC Championship game. What is exciting is that the Seahawks and Rams will face off against one another next in what could be a preview for the NFC Championship. For more on the Seahawks, head to Newsweek Sports.

Results Announced for 2025 Santa Fe Mayoral Election

In Santa Fe, voters headed to the polls on Tuesday to elect a new mayor using a ranked-choice voting system, marking only the second occasion this method has been employed for the mayoral race. As residents navigated the ranked-choice voting system, they faced the challenge of selecting from a diverse slate of eight candidates. The candidates vying for the position included Santa Fe County Commissioner Justin Greene, City Council Member Michael Garcia, former City Council Members Ronald Trujillo and JoAnne Coppler, New Mexico Finance Authority CFO Oscar Salazar Rodriguez, businesswoman Letitia Montoya, journalist Tarin Nix, and academic Jeanne O’Dean. Key issues dominating the campaign were affordable housing, crime, public safety, and homelessness. According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, Greene led in fundraising efforts, amassing a total of $130,837, with Coppler following at $90,161. The ranked-choice voting system allows voters to rank candidates by preference. Initially, votes are allocated based on the first-choice preferences from the ballots. If no candidate secures over 50% of the votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed according to the voters’ subsequent preferences. This process repeats until a candidate achieves the necessary majority to win. Polls in New Mexico close at 9 p.m. ET Tuesday. See results of the Santa Fe mayoral race in the tracker below

Decade-Long Evasion Ends in Tragedy: Illegal Immigrant Faces Charges in Fatal DUI Hit-and-Run

A Mexican national, who had been living unlawfully in the United States for over ten years despite a federal deportation order, was apprehended in Orange County, California, on Friday. The arrest followed a tragic incident where the individual allegedly struck and killed a 71-year-old man in a DUI hit-and-run accident, federal law enforcement sources revealed. According to a report from The Orange County Register, deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to an emergency call about a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle. Upon arrival, they discovered Barry William Tutt, a 71-year-old resident of La Verne, in critical condition. Tutt was rushed to a local hospital by emergency medical teams, but he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Eyewitnesses described seeing a silver Ford sedan leaving the scene, and detectives later determined that the driver was Humberto Munoz Gatica, a 57-year-old resident of Laguna Niguel, as reported by The Register. Gatica was tracked down, arrested on charges of DUI and related offenses, and booked into the Orange County Jail. The investigation into the matter is ongoing. Federal law-enforcement sources told Fox News that Gatica was first arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in 2011 for being in the country illegally. He was released under the Obama administration with a notice to appear in court but never did, leading a federal immigration judge to order his deportation in absentia in 2012. Gatica has remained an ICE fugitive since that ruling, officials said, living in California, which designates itself a sanctuary state. Authorities said he was driving under the influence in Dana Point on Friday when he allegedly struck Tutt and fled. Jail records show Gatica faces charges of DUI causing death or bodily injury and hit-and-run causing death or bodily injury. Federal officials also told Fox News that Gatica was arrested in 2011 on a robbery charge in Orange County but later pleaded to grand theft as part of a plea deal.
