‘Outrageous’: 21 arrested and four officers injured in protest clashes at Chicago-area ICE facility

Protests around a Chicago-area Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility descended into chaos on Friday resulting in 21 arrests and four officers being injured. It’s the latest clash at a facility that’s become a hub of demonstrations against the Trump administration’s ongoing immigration crackdown in the region. Videos captured a hundreds-strong crowd and police in riot gear pinning protesters to the ground and arresting them. Jillian Westerfield, the associate minister at Lake Street Church in Evanston, said she attended the day’s demonstrations to try to minister to detainees inside the facility. She also wanted to potentially greet some of the hundreds of people who have been ordered released from federal detention in the region, after a federal judge found that agents violated a 2022 settlement agreement over warrantless arrests in Chicago and the surrounding area. Westerfield said in an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times she saw a group of faith leaders linking arms in the streets and joined in. “For me, it was a spontaneous moment of wanting to join in with the people around me and do what we could to deliver some kind of comfort inside,” she told the paper. She was pushed down in the chaos and suffered bruises from her fall. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said the confrontations took place after a section of the crowd exited a designated protest zone and began marching through the roadway, which is restricted. Most of those arrested have been charged with obstruction, disorderly conduct, or walking on a highway, the sheriff’s office told The Associated Press. In the ensuing standoff, which did not feature any federal agents, two Broadview Police Department officers and a county deputy were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The deputy has since been released from the hospital. A fourth officer, an Illinois State Trooper, was reportedly treated at the scene. In a statement, Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson condemned the officers’ injuries as “unacceptable and outrageous” and called on protesters to “raise their voices, not their fists.” The Trump administration, which has been accused of using excessively violent tactics outside the facility and holding migrants in unsanitary conditions inside it, mocked Friday’s protesters. “Womp womp, cry all you want. These criminal illegal aliens aren’t getting released,” the Department of Homeland Security wrote on X. “Like clockwork, violent rioters have arrived at the Broadview ICE facility to demand the release of some of the worst human beings on planet earth. Get a job you imbecilic morons.” The Trump administration surged federal immigration officers to the Chicago area in September as part of “Operation Midway Blitz,” and has tried but so far been legally unable to send National Guard troops into the region against local leaders’ wishes.

Michigan basketball spreads the love with four in double digits in 67-63 win over TCU

Coach Dusty May’s announced plan for Michigan basketball to rely on a rotating cast of leading scorers this seasongot a vote of confidence Friday, Nov. 14, in Fort Worth, Texas, as the No. 5 Wolverines got double-digit scoring from a quartet of players from different origins in a 67-61 victory over TCU. Yaxel Lendeborg, the expected star after transferring from UAB, posted 14 points; Illinois transfer Morez Johnson Jr. had 10 points; holdover Roddy Gayle Jr. chipped in 10 more; and true freshman Trey McKenney — Michigan Mr. Basketball and a McDonald’s All-American — kept pace with 11 in just his third college game. NEXT YEAR'S CREW: Michigan basketball officially inks 2026 class, which sits just outside top 10 in nation Add in dominant work in the paint from Lendeborg — 10 rebounds and three blocks — and Johnson, who chipped in 12 boards and two blocks, and it was a winning recipe for May’s crew, which improved to 3-0. Turnovers an issue early Lendeborg was the story early, leading the Wolverines in the first half with eight points and five rebounds in 13 minutes before the break. He was also one of the few Wolverines without a turnover over the first 20 minutes, as U-M gave it away 11 times. That included three from point guard Elliott Cadeau, a transfer from North Carolina who had three points, five rebounds and one assist to go with his three giveaways in the opening period. Another culprit: Sophomore guard L.J. Cason, who had three turnovers while shooting 2-for-5 en route to five points. Still, the Wolverines made up for their giveaways by outrebounding the Horned Frogs, 21-11, in the first half, though their points in the paint were even, at 12 apiece. More from Morez Johnson Jr. The Illinois transfer turned it on in the second half, hitting four of six shots for eight points and pulling down nine rebounds as the Wolverines found their shot after halftime. After shooting just 38.5% over the first 20 minutes, the Wolverines hit 13 of 27 — 48.1% — from the floor in the second half. Next up for Michigan basketball The Wolverines return to Ann Arbor to host Middle Tennessee State on Wednesday (6:30 p.m., Big Ten Network). The Blue Raiders are 3-0 after a 77-72 victory over Evansville on Nov. 12, though their first two wins came against non-Division I teams. After that, it’s off to Las Vegas for a trio of games in the Players Era Championship tournament during Thanksgiving week before starting the Big Ten schedule in December.

US jury says Apple must pay Masimo $634 million in smartwatch patent case

(Reuters) -A federal jury in California said on Fridaythat Apple owes medical-monitoring technology company Masimo $634 million for infringing a patent covering blood-oxygen reading technology. The jury agreed with Masimo that the Apple Watch's workout mode and heart rate notification features violated Masimo's patent rights, a Masimo spokesperson confirmed. An Apple spokesperson said that the company disagrees with the verdict and will appeal. Masimo, in a statement, called the verdict "a significant win in our ongoing efforts to protect our innovations and intellectual property." The California lawsuit is one branch of a contentious, multi-front patent fight between Apple and Irvine, California-based Masimo, which hasaccused Apple of hiring away its employees and stealing its pulse oximetry technology to use in Apple Watches. The dispute led a U.S. trade tribunal to block imports of Apple's Series 9 and Ultra 2 smartwatches in 2023 after finding that Apple's technology infringed Masimo's patents. Apple removed blood-oxygen reading technology from its watches to avoid the ban and reintroduced an updated version of the technology in August with approval from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The ITC separately on Friday decided to hold a new proceeding to determine whether Apple's updated watches should be subject to the ban. Masimo has filed an ongoing lawsuit against Customs over the decision. Apple has separately challenged the import ban at a federal appeals court. A California judge declared a mistrial in Masimo's trade-secret case against Apple in 2023 after a jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. Apple won a minimal $250 verdict against Masimo in Delaware last yearover allegations that Masimo's smartwatches infringe two Apple design patents. Singapore to Begin Charging Sustainable Aviation Fuel Levy Starting 2026

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Singapore is set to become the world’s first country to introduce a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) levy, aimed at supporting the wider use of cleaner jet fuel. The levy will apply to passengers departing from Singapore starting October 1, 2026, for tickets sold from April 1, 2026, according to Travel + Leisure Asia.Citing the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) via The Straits Times, passengers will be charged between 1 and 41.60 Singapore dollars, approximately Rp13,000 to Rp535,000, depending on cabin class and flight distance. For short-haul routes within Southeast Asia, economy passengers will pay S$1 (Rp13,000).For medium-haul destinations such as East Asia, South Asia, Australia, and Papua New Guinea, the levy ranges from S$2.80 (Rp36,000) for economy to S$11.20 (Rp144,000) for premium cabins.Flights to Africa, West Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Pacific will incur charges of S$2.80 (Rp36,000) for economy and S$25.60 (Rp329,000) for premium seats. The highest fees apply to flights to the Americas: S$10.40 (Rp134,000) for economy and S$41.60 (Rp535,000) for business and first class.CAAS noted that premium cabins and long-haul flights face higher levies due to greater fuel consumption. The levy will not apply to transit passengers, training flights, or humanitarian operations.Emission Reduction Targets and Funding MechanismRevenue from the SAF levy will be used to purchase sustainable aviation fuel through a newly established company, Singapore Sustainable Aviation Fuel Company (SAFCo), which will manage SAF procurement for Singapore’s airport hubs. The initiative supports Singapore’s goal of having SAF account for 1 percent of total jet fuel consumption at Changi and Seletar airports in 2026, rising to 3-5 percent by 2030. Updated price estimates for SAF have also allowed the government to set the levy lower than initially projected.Inclusion of Cargo and Private Jet FlightsThe SAF levy will also apply to cargo operations, calculated based on shipment weight and distance. For private jets and charter flights, the charges will be determined by aircraft wingspan and flight distance, following the same distance-band categories used for commercial flights. This policy forms part of Singapore’s long-term roadmap to achieve net-zero emissions in both domestic and international aviation by 2050.SAF, which is produced from used cooking oil, municipal waste, and captured carbon, is considered the most viable near-term solution for reducing aviation emissions without requiring major changes to existing aircraft technology.Annisa Nur Alimah contributed to the writing of this article.Editor’s Choice: Visa Launches Scan to Pay QR Payment System Across Asia PacificClick here to get the latest news updates from Tempo on Google News

MPA Applauds US, Korea Deal for Resolving ‘Unfair Trade Practices’ Impacting Hollywood

The Motion Picture Association is celebrating a major update following a formalized trade agreement between the U.S. and South Korea. After the White House released details regarding President Trump and President Lee’s recent meeting, where the two leaders locked down specifics for the prior July trade agreement, the MPA thanked the “U.S. Trade Representative and his team” for resolving issues that directly impacted Hollywood. “We welcome today’s announcement following the meeting between President Trump and President Lee that the United States and the Republic of Korea have committed to ‘ensure that U.S. companies are not discriminated against and do not face unnecessary barriers in terms of laws and policies concerning digital services, including network usage fees,’” Charles Rivkin, Chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association, said in a statement Friday. “The MPA appreciates the tireless work of the U.S. Trade Representative and his team to resolve unfair trade practices that impact the American film, television and streaming industry.” Per the White House, the deal also promised “to facilitate cross-border transfer of data, including for location, reinsurance and personal data. Further, the United States and the ROK will support the permanent moratorium on customs duties on electronic transmissions at the World Trade Organization.” The MPA isn’t the only one celebrating in the aftermath of the Trump-Lee meeting. Ambassador Jamieson Greer, who was appointed the 20th United States Trade Representative earlier this year, praised Trump and his “winning streak.” “President Trump’s winning streak following his successful swing in Asia continues with the release of a Joint Fact Sheet with the Republic of Korea, underscoring the United States’ commitment to achieve more reciprocal and balanced trade with a strong trading partner,” the ambassador wrote in a statement. “Korea committed to address non-tariff barriers that U.S. exporters face, further promoting economic prosperity and national security for Americans. The leaders also agreed to advance significant investments in key industries such as shipbuilding and to strengthen strategic commercial partnerships.”

German Baumkuchen 'tree cake' survived a disaster and world wars to become a Japanese favorite

Baumkuchen originated in Germany but has become a wildly popular sweet in Japan, where a prisoner of war on a small western island started making the treat that has thrived in its new homeland. Today, the confectionery known as “tree cake” because of the resemblance to a trunk with rings is considered a symbol of longevity and prosperity in Japan, where Baumkuchen festivals are regularly held. Japanese adaptations, including those using maccha and sweet potatoes, are popular gifts at weddings and birthdays. Baumkuchen is sold in gift boxes at luxury department stores and individually wrapped, smaller versions can be found at convenience stores. The sweet's early years, however, are associated with a catastrophic earthquake and two world wars. Making Baumkuchen is one of most popular activities on Ninoshima, just a 20-minute ferry ride from Hiroshima. But visitors also must learn the sleepy island’s role in Japan’s wartime history, according to Kazuaki Otani, head of the Juccheim Ninoshima Welcome Center. At the outdoor center built over the site of a prisoner of war camp, amateur bakers pour batter on a bamboo pole and roast the mixture over a charcoal fire. As the surface turns light brown, a new layer is poured, creating brown rings as the cake grows thicker and the sweet smell wafts through the picnic area. This is how a German confectioner named Karl Juchheim baked Baumkuchen while he was imprisoned on the island more than 100 years ago. During Japan’s militarist expansion period beginning in the late 1890s, Ninoshima served as a military quarantine station as nearby Hiroshima developed into a major military hub. About 4,700 mostly German civilians and servicemembers were kept at 16 camps across Japan during World War I. The German prisoners at Ninoshima were given “a certain degree of freedom” and allowed to cook, Otani said. Juchheim was running a bakery in Qingdao, China, then a German territory, when he was captured by the Japanese in 1915. He arrived on Ninoshima in 1917 with some 500 German POWs and is believed to have tested his Baumkuchen recipe there, Otani said. When the war ended in 1918, Juchheim and about 200 fellow POWs stayed in Japan. In March 1919, Juchheim’s Baumkuchen commercially debuted in Japan at the Hiroshima Prefectural Products Exhibition. His handmade cake was hugely popular and attracted a big crowd of Japanese visitors, historical documents show. The confectioner opened a pastry shop in Yokohama, near Tokyo, in 1922. The 1923 Great Kanto quake destroyed the business and forced Juchheim to move his family to the western port city of Kobe, where he opened a coffee shop serving Baumkuchen. That store was leveled by U.S. firebombings on Kobe two months before the end of World War II. Yet he remained and grew the business in Kobe, where Juchheim Co., Ltd., still operates as one of Japan’s top confectioners with the help of his wife Elise and devoted Japanese staff. The atomic bomb dropped by the U.S. on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, and another on Nagasaki three days later killed more than 210,000 by the end of that year. In the aftermath, about 10,000 severely injured victims were shipped from Hiroshima to Ninoshima for treatment and temporary shelter. Most died there and many of their remains have yet to be found, experts say. Juchheim died of illness at a Kobe hotel on Aug. 14, 1945, the day before Japan announced its surrender. “His baking was an expression of his wish for peace,” Otani said. “By sharing with visitors what things were like back then, I hope it gives people an opportunity to reflect on peace.”

Seven killed in blast at police station in Indian-administered Kashmir  - Grenada Chronicle – Daily Grenada

At least seven people have been killed and 27 more injured after a cache of confiscated explosives detonated in a police station in Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir’s main city. The stockpile exploded late on Friday night at a police station in the Nowgam area in the south of Srinagar. Most of those killed were policemen and forensic team officials who were examining the explosives at the time of the detonation, unnamed sources told Indian broadcaster NDTV. Two officials from the Srinagar administration also died in the blast. With five people still in critical condition, the death toll could continue to climb, according to the media outlet. “Not a terror attack. Police say it’s a very unfortunate incident,” NDTV’s senior executive editor Aditya Raj Kaul said in a post on social media. “The blast happened when a forensics team and the police were checking the explosive material stored at the police station,” he said. The huge blast comes days after Monday’s deadly car explosion in New Delhi, which killed at least 12 people near the city’s historic Red Fort and which officials have called a “terror” incident. The explosion in the Indian capital occurred just hours after police arrested several people and seized explosive materials as well as assault rifles. Police said the suspects were linked to Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM), a Pakistan-based group that is seeking to end Indian rule in Kashmir, and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, a Kashmir offshoot linked to JeM. Police in Indian-administered Kashmir also detained more than 650 people as part of their investigation following the New Delhi car blast. According to reports, the Nowgam police station, where the blast took place on Friday, had led an investigation into posters that were displayed around the area by JeM, warning it would carry out attacks on security forces and “outsiders”. Police said their investigation into the posters exposed a “white-collar terror ecosystem, involving radicalised professionals and students in contact with foreign handlers, operating from Pakistan and other countries”. Police also recovered nearly 3,000kg (3 tonnes) of ammonium nitrate, a commonly used material in bomb making, saying the armed group was stockpiling enough explosives to carry out a major attack in India. Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since their independence from British rule in 1947, and both claim the Himalayan territory. The two countries have fought three wars over Kashmir since the nations were partitioned in 1947, and tensions remain high between New Delhi and Islamabad over the status of the territory.

Man jailed for ‘smash and grab’ theft of Banksy’s Girl with Balloon print  - Grenada Chronicle – Daily

A man has been sentenced to 13 months in prison by a British court for stealing a print of street artist Banksy’s iconic Girl with Balloon from a London gallery in September last year. Larry Fraser, 49, was jailed on Friday by a judge in southwest London after he pleaded guilty to the smash-and-grab burglary of the elusive artist’s painting, valued at 270,000 pounds ($355,200). Despite trying to conceal his identity with a mask, Fraser was caught on camera, and police tracked him down two days after the theft. The artwork was recovered shortly afterwards, according to London’s Metropolitan Police. “This is a brazen and serious non-domestic burglary,” said Judge Anne Brown, passing the sentence at Kingston Crown Court. The Girl with Balloon first appeared on the streets of London’s Shoreditch neighbourhood in 2002, with Banksy creating versions of the painting on London’s South Bank in 2004 and in the occupied West Bank in 2005. One version of the painting shredded itself into pieces the moment after it was sold for more than one million British pounds ($1.3m) by London auction house Sotheby’s in 2018. Detective Chief Inspector Scott Mather said: “Banksy’s ‘Girl with Balloon’ is known across the world – and we reacted immediately to not just bring Fraser to justice but also reunite the artwork with the gallery.” The secretive British street artist has returned to Palestine on multiple occasions to create artworks, including a version of the girl with the red balloon. In 2005, he sprayed nine stencilled images at different locations along the illegal, eight-metre-high (26-foot) separation wall that Israel has constructed in the occupied West Bank. They included a ladder reaching over the wall, a young girl being carried over it by balloons and a window on the grey concrete showing beautiful mountains in the background. In 2007, he painted a number of artworks in Bethlehem, including a young girl frisking an Israeli soldier pinned up against a wall. In February 2015, he allegedly sneaked into the Gaza Strip through a smuggling tunnel and painted three works on the walls of Gaza homes destroyed in Israeli air strikes during the previous year’s conflict. In 2017, he opened the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem, just four metres from Israel’s separation wall. Earlier this year, authorities attempted to scrub a Banksy painting on a London court wall that depicted a judge hitting a protester and was believed to refer to the country’s crackdown on the Palestine Action protest group. Banksy rose to fame for sharply ironic outdoor graffiti with political themes. Once a small-time graffiti artist from the English city of Bristol, his artwork has become hugely popular worldwide and valuable.

Jailed Tunisian opposition figure hospitalised amid hunger strike: Family  - Grenada Chronicle – Daily

Jailed Tunisian opposition figure Jawhar Ben Mbarek has been hospitalised due to severe dehydration, his family has said, as his health continues to deteriorate after more than two weeks on hunger strike. Ben Mbarek, the cofounder of Tunisia’s main opposition alliance, the National Salvation Front, started his hunger strike on October 29 to protest his detention in jail since February 2023. In a Facebook post on Friday, Ben Mbarek’s sister, Dalila Ben Mbarek Msaddek, warned that her brother’s health had now “severely deteriorated” and doctors detected “a highly dangerous toxin” affecting his kidneys. Msaddek said Ben Mbarek had “received treatment but refused nutritional supplements” at the hospital where he was transferred on Thursday night, insisting on continuing his now 17-day protest. The politician was discharged from hospital on Friday afternoon and returned to prison, Msaddek added. On Wednesday, Ben Mbarek’s lawyer Hanen Khmiri said he had “faced torture” at the hands of guards at Belli prison, as they attempted to force him to end his protest. “He was severely beaten, we saw fractures and bruises on his body,” Khmiri said, adding that she had filed a complaint with the public prosecutor, who promised to investigate. “He told me that four of the prison guards beat him severely in a place where there is no surveillance camera,” she said. Ben Mbarek is one of the most prominent opponents of Tunisian strongman President Kais Saied, who has been in power since 2019. In April, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison on charges of “conspiracy against state security” and “belonging to a terrorist group”, in a mass trial of opposition figures slammed by human rights groups as politically motivated. Ben Mbarek has denied the charges, which he has called fabricated. Rights groups have warned of a sharp decline in civil liberties in Tunisia since a sweeping power grab by Saied in July 2021, when he dissolved parliament and expanded executive power so he could rule by decree. That decree was later enshrined in a new constitution, ratified by a widely boycotted 2022 referendum. Media figures and lawyers critical of Saied have also been prosecuted and detained under a harsh “fake news” law enacted the same year. Last week, Ben Mbarek’s family and prominent members of Tunisia’s political opposition announced they would join him in a collective hunger strike. Among the participants was Issam Chebbi, the leader of the centrist Al Joumhouri (Republican) Party, who is also behind bars after being convicted in the same mass trial as Ben Mbarek earlier this year. Rached Ghannouchi, the 84-year-old leader of the Ennahdha party, who is also serving a hefty prison sentence, also said he would join the protest. Chebbi and Ghannouchi’s current condition is not known. Prison authorities have maintained the men are under “continuous medical supervision” and denied “rumours about the deterioration in the health of any detainees”.
