7-Eleven selling half-off fried food for Black Friday alongside regular-priced black food

It’s more like a Golden Brown Fryday. I never really got all the craziness over Black Friday sales. I guess you have to be in the USA to get the really good ones, because I always see news stories from there about people camping out overnight or injuring each other to get in on these insanely good deals. But whenever I look online or in my local fliers, it’s always one percent off a PlayStation 5, half off dietary fiber pills, or other “bargains” I couldn’t be less interested in. That is, until 7-Eleven Japan announced one of the best Black Friday sales I’ve ever had the opportunity of taking advantage of. Playing off a “fried-day” pun, the convenience store chain will be offering 50 percent off select fried foods nationwide from 27 to 30 November. First up are 7-Eleven’s highly underrated fried chicken cutlets. While everyone always seems to rave about Family Mart’s famous Famichiki, I always felt they were way too oily. The ones at 7-Eleven usually have a much more balanced juiciness, and if you don’t believe me, you can see for yourself when they’re sold for the half-price of just 111 yen (US$0.72) on 29 November. The spring rolls at 7-Eleven are nothing to scoff at either, and make for a cheap and hot snack that can’t be beat. And for two days, they’ll be even cheaper at 56 yen a piece on 28 and 30 November. And if that’s still not cheap enough for you, here come the Hokkaido Potato Beef Croquettes for just 50 yen each on 27 November. Each one is stuffed with exquisite, piping hot Hokkaido potatoes and a savory hint of beef. Also, the “Friday” aspect of Black Friday isn’t the only thing 7-Eleven is having fun with. For the month of November, they’ve been selling special black-colored foods. Their Zakuchiki (Jet Black Double Pepper) chicken filets went on sale on 4 November, followed by the Black Sukiyaki Spring Rolls on 11 November. Still to come are the Store-Baked Black Cookies on 18 November, as well as the Black Melon Pan, Curry Stick Black, and Chewy Donut Black on 25 November. So don’t waste your time hunting out deals on already-overpriced and unnecessary things and pig out on greasy black food instead! I believe it’s what the founding fathers of the USA intended when they invented Black Friday while having a feast with the Native Americans who chopped down their cherry trees to make wooden teeth for George Washington after he lost his original ones flying a kite that got hit by lightning. I learned a lot about that country from TV. Source, images: PR Times 1, 2 ● Want to hear about SoraNews24’s latest articles as soon as they’re published? Follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

Shubman Gill Doubtful For 2nd Test Against South Africa: Report

Indian captain Shubman Gill is doubtful for the second Test against South Africa, which is scheduled to take place at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati from November 22 to 26. According to a report in RevSportz on Saturday, the 26-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab, who retired hurt on Saturday morning due to severe neck pain, is in doubt for the second red-ball match of the ongoing India-South Africa series after being admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata. As per available information, Gill will take a few days to get fit, and due to that reason, he may not feature in the second Test. Gill, who scored 4 runs from three balls in the morning session of the second day’s play before deciding to return back to the dugout, experienced severe neck pain on Saturday and was admitted to the hospital. He was kept under observation, and as per RevSportz, Gill was monitored through the night. “Gill has been administered medicines, but it will take a few days for him to be fit. This puts his participation in the second Test between India and South Africa in Guwahati in doubt,” RevSportz reported. In Gill’s absence, Rishabh Pant led the side during the second day’s play, and he will captain the side in the Guwahati Test as well if Gill skips that fixture. After the conclusion of the second day’s play at the iconic Eden Gardens, India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, attended the press conference, and when he was asked about Gill’s injury, he said, “I think we first need to determine how he got neck stiffness, maybe just a bad night’s sleep. I don’t think we can put it down to the load. Shubman is a very fit guy; he looks after himself very well, so it’s just unfortunate this morning that he woke up with a stiff neck and that carried him into the day, which was crucial for us.” Curse of November 15 Gill, who retired hurt during India’s first innings on Saturday, November 15, also played in the first semifinal of the ODI World Cup 2023 against New Zealand in Mumbai on the same date a couple of years ago, where he similarly retired hurt. Gill was batting with a score of 79 runs off 65 balls when he walked off the field because of cramps. However, he came back in the 50th over to resume his innings and scored a run off the only ball he got to face, ending with 80 runs off 66 balls.

Northumberland Street, Newcastle, on a busy shopping day in 1980 - and the same view today

This was Newcastle’s main thoroughfare, Northumberland Street, as it was on a bustling shopping day in 1980. On the lampposts, we see signs marking the city’s 900th anniversary celebrations - the ‘New castle’ having been founded in 1080 by Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror. There would be a series of events and displays held across Newcastle throughout the year. On the left, we see two of the city centre’s retail heavyweights, Fenwick and Marks & Spencer. They remain present and correct in 2025. On the other side of the street, however, are once-popular stores and household retail names which have disappeared over the last 45 years - Littlewoods, Callers, C&A, and Jackson the Tailor. Much further back in time, in the mid 18th century, the street was described as featuring “very pretty houses standing in the middle of gardens and shady fields”. But by the beginning of the 19th century, the old houses were “rapidly becoming shops”, it was reported. The area around Northumberland Street really took off as a shopping hub in the early decades of the 20th century, replacing Grainger Street as the main place to go. Fenwick had been trading since 1882. In 1913, Woolworths opened its doors for the first time - and in 1932, Marks & Spencer, British Home Stores (BHS), and C&A all arrived on the scene. Only 'Marks & Sparks' of those three survives today. In 1976, Eldon Square Shopping Centre opened, with one of its main entrances situated halfway up Northumberland Street. The Chronicle noted at the time: “Shoppers will be able to walk freely in a series of covered malls, while traffic is segregated at a lower level of service roads and a bus concourse.” Younger folk might be surprised to see cars and buses on Northumberland Street. In fact, it had long been a busy, integral section of the main A1 route that linked London and Edinburgh. The busy traffic subsided somewhat following a huge fire at the Callers store in 1969 which led to some restrictions, and even more so after the opening of the Central Motorway in 1975. It wouldn’t be until 1998 that Northumberland Street was fully pedestrianised, transforming it into a location for busking, street performance and events. The Chronicle recently reported how a long-running revamp of the street should finally be complete in six months’ time. Shoppers and businesses have had to put up with disruption since the major regeneration project began in December 2023. Newcastle City Council announced work at the southern end of Northumberland Street is now virtually complete, while it hopes work on the rest of the street will be finished by April next year. From horse-drawn carts to high street chains, Northumberland Street has seen it all - and continues to evolve. We have a dedicated newsletter for ChronicleLive’s nostalgia stories and pictures. China: 4 mice sent for life-science tests in space return to Earth

Beijing [China], November 16 (ANI): The ninth batch of space science experiment samples, including four mice used in life-science tests, returned by the Shenzhou-21 spacecraft from the China Space Station on Friday, have been delivered to Chinese scientists early Saturday, Global Times learned from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The samples returned include life science, materials science, and combustion experiment samples involving 26 experimental projects, comprising nine types of life experiment samples, 32 types of materials experiment samples, and three types of combustion science specimens, with a total weight of approximately 46.67 kilograms, according to a CAS press release. The mice were handled on-site after landing. Researchers will examine their behaviour and key physiological and biochemical indicators to preliminarily analyse the stress response and adaptive changes of mice to the space environment, providing a scientific basis for further understanding its effects on living organisms, according to the CAS, as quoted by Global Times. In addition to the mice, other life science samples such as zebrafish, hornwort, streptomyces, planarians, brain organoids, along with several materials science and combustion science experiment samples, were transported to the Space Application Engineering and Technology Centre of CAS in Beijing at 0:40 am (local time) on Saturday, as per Global Times. The centre will inspect and confirm the status of the returned experiment samples before delivering them to scientists for subsequent research. The remaining materials science and combustion science experiment samples will be transported to Beijing later aboard the return capsule of the Shenzhou-21 spacecraft. Scientists will then conduct transcriptomic sequencing, proteomics analysis, and other biological tests on the returned life science cell samples. The research will examine how microgravity affects the body at multiple levels, analyzing key biological mechanisms and intervention targets to provide new insights for the prevention and intervention of related diseases.Once the materials science samples such as tungsten-hafnium alloys, soft magnetic materials, and relaxor ferroelectric single crystals, scientists will conduct tests and analyses on the organizational morphology, chemical composition, and distribution differences of the space samples. The studies will explore how gravity affects material growth, component segregation, solidification defects, and performance, as well as the service behavior and performance of materials in the special space environment. The research findings will support future space applications, including high-performance solar cell protective materials, high-gain radiation-resistant optical fibers, and lunar base construction material preparation processes. They will also provide key theoretical foundations and technical support for satellite communications and broader space exploration, Global Times reported. (ANI)

4 Takeaways From The U.S. Men's Team's 2-1 Win Over Paraguay

CHESTER, Penn. - If Gio Reyna wants to get to the 2026 World Cup, then he took a step in the right direction. Making his first start under U.S. men's national team coach Mauricio Pochettino and just his second for club or country since March, the 23-year-old attacking midfielder made the most of his night against Paraguay on a chilly night at Subaru Park. It was an encouraging sign for a USMNT squad playing in its second-to-last match of the year. Here are my takeaways: With just 146 minutes played for German club Borussia Mönchengladbach this season, the 23-year-old attacking midfielder was a surprise inclusion on Pochettino’s roster this month. Still, nobody questions the talent of a player who was rightly considered among the most promising youngsters in the global game five years ago. But Reyna has been dogged by injuries since then, derailing his development. Still, with attacking regulars such as forwards Christian Pulisic, Malik Tillman and Tim Weah left behind with their European clubs this month having just recovered from injuries, Pochettino turned to Reyna for a creative spark despite his lack of playing time overseas. And the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager was rewarded almost immediately, when the rangy playmaker nodded home wingback Max Arfsten’s service from the doorstep to give the hosts the early advantage. It was Arfsten’s team-leading fifth assist of this calendar year. It’s doubtful that the goal alone will vault Reyna onto Pochettino’s final 26-man roster for next summer's roster. He’ll have to play more — much more — in the Bundesliga in the four months before the USMNT next convenes in late March. But it certainly doesn’t hurt. The U.S. gave up two concerning goals last month, when they tied Ecuador and came from behind to top Australia. They were the type of strikes that get teams knocked out of World Cups early. The same thing happened again on Saturday. Once again, there was plenty of blame to go around. Reyna’s lack of defensive pressure — never his strong suit anyway — gifted Paraguay a long pass over the entire U.S. back-line, allowing forward Miguel Almiron to pick out Arce in the box with one touch. The three USMNT defenders – Joe Scally, Miles Robinson and Tim Ream – were all slow to react. It was way too easy. And while it didn’t cost the Americans this time, those sorts of mistakes will surely be punished ruthlessly next summer, no matter the opponents. We’ll see if the U.S. can earn a clean sheet against an even more powerful foe in its next match. (More on that in a minute.) Given how many regulars are missing this month, this was an impressive victory. Along with the aforementioned playmaking trio (Pulisic, Tillman and Weah), the U.S. were missing midfield stalwart Tyler Adams, center-back Chris Richards and right-back Antonee "Jedi" Robinson. Paraguay's response initially snuffed out the good vibes from Reyna's goal, but striker Folarin Balogun's continued fine form provided a spark. With his second-half goal, Balogun put the hosts ahead for good with less than 20 minutes of regular time remaining. It was the third straight start in which the Monaco man found the net. It's why this result was the latest sign that things are slowly but surely moving in the right direction as 2026 draws closer. Saturday’s triumph gives the U.S. its first winning streak since the Gold Cup over the summer. Add in the September win over Japan, and the Americans are now unbeaten in four with three victories and one draw. The USMNT won’t have much time to prepare for its 2025 finale, what with just two days of rest — instead of the usual three — before they take on Uruguay on Tuesday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. At No. 15 in FIFA’s most recent men’s ranking, La Celeste sits one spot above the 16th-ranked Americans. Despite a new generation of players — longtime mainstays such as striker duo Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani both retired from their national team in 2024 — Uruguay still boasts several legit elite talents, even with Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde not included in manager Marcelo Bielsa’s squad this month. Chief among them is Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo, but there’s also midfielders Rodrigo Bentancur (Tottehnam) and Manuel Ugarte (Manchester United). Tuesday’s contest will also mark a reunion between Pochettino and Bielsa, who coached a young Pochettino at Newell's Old Boys, one of Argentina's most historic clubs. "It's going to be nice to see Marcelo," Pochettino told reporters ahead of Saturday’s game. "You know very well my relationship and my admiration and my love [for Bielsa]. "They qualified [to the World Cup], and they play great. I know what means to play for him, and I know what means to play against him. It's going to be tough." Budget warning as savers could still face higher HMRC tax bill

Savers hoping Chancellor Rachel Reeves will not increase income tax in the Autumn Budget may still find themselves paying more tax. There have been reports that Labour is considering a hike in income tax in the Autumn Statement, scheduled for November 26. However, even if Chancellor Rachel Reeves opts to maintain the current tax rate, some savers could see their tax bills rise. Jeremy Cox, head of Strategy at Coventry Building Society, said: "Our members, particularly those who are retired and on fixed incomes, will be relieved if income tax rates are not increased later this month. "But if income tax thresholds are frozen for longer and cash ISA allowances are reduced, many could end up paying more income tax anyway, including on their cash savings." At present, you can deposit up to £20,000 a year into ISAs, with any interest earnings or investment growth within an ISA being tax-free. There have been reports that the Chancellor might introduce a £4,000 cap on cash ISA savings, as a way to encourage people to invest more. Mr Cox warned that even before any changes in the Budget, many people face increasing tax bills in the future. He said: "With income tax thresholds frozen, many more people were already in line to be higher rate taxpayers next year." Moving into the higher rate also means you could pay more tax on your savings. Those on the basic rate for income tax can earn up to £1,000 a year in interest tax-free, aside from your tax-exempt ISA savings. But once you move to the higher rate, this is cut in half to just £500. This means you could pay an extra £200 in tax if your interest earnings were £1,000 or more. Derence Lee, chief finance officer at ISA provider Shepherds Friendly, warned savers not to act rashly ahead of any changes in the Budget. He said: "Acting on speculation alone can carry risks. Staying informed and reviewing your current savings, pensions, and investments to understand their tax-efficiency can help you make considered decisions. "Frozen thresholds may result in some individuals paying higher rates of tax, but the impact will vary depending on individual circumstances. Once the budget is announced, take time to digest the details before making any major financial decisions." He explained that speaking to a financial adviser may be helpful if you're uncertain about what steps to take following any policy announcements. Mr Lee discussed what changes there could be in the Autumn Statement: "Areas such as income tax thresholds, capital gains, inheritance tax, and pension reliefs could be under review as the Chancellor considers ways to manage public finances and support economic growth. "There may also be adjustments to allowances, ISA limits, or pension reliefs as part of wider fiscal measures."

North East nursery worker bounced back from post-natal depression to land 'job I was born for'

A Tyneside mum has dealt with post-natal depression and bounced back to become a nursery worker - a job she described as "what I was born for". Iranian born Taraneh Jahani, 38, gained her qualifications thanks to support from the WEA adult education charity and the Riverside Community Project in the city. She told ChronicleLive how the course she had undertaken there had changed her life. Taraneh said: "I have been living in Newcastle for about ten years. I used to be a care worker. I loved that sort of job - helping others. But then I had some health problems and had to stop working. "I had my son and was very depressed, and had come out of an unhealthy relationship, all while not having family around. I had many challenges and my life was not easy. But I wanted to be strong for my son, to show him that I could step up for him, change his life and change my own life. My son is waiting for an autism assessment and that has been challenging too. "And so this [course] was also a way of learning more about how to support him. I asked his nursery manager how could I get a job in like this, and recommended the WEA at Riverside Community Project." This is what she did. Taraneh went along to the course - and she then went on placement at a local nursery. She said she had loved it. "I thought it would be perfect for me," she said. "It helped me to find out all about my potential." Our ChronicleLive Daily newsletter is free. You can sign up to receive it here . It will keep you up to date with all the latest breaking news and top stories from the North East. Taraneh found her confidence boosted and she loved being on placement - and she said she was able to use her crafting skills to great effect. She said: "It was part of the assessment to prepare an activity about healthy eating and they were really impressed. It was making all the foods out of The Very Hungry Caterpillar - they loved the idea and the craft behind it. And that helped my confidence - I really thought 'this is something I can do'." Though she didn't accept - she wanted to work in a bigger nursery as she now does at the Co-Op Little Pioneers nursery in Newcastle city centre . She said she was delighted with this - and that it had really helped her to understand her son. She added: "This is the job I was born for." The WEA is a national educational charity with "a mission to bring lifelong learning within reach of everyone who needs it, fighting inequality and promoting social justice". 4 dead after wooden boat believed to be ferrying migrants into the US capsizes off San Diego

A wooden skiff believed to have been ferrying migrants toward the U.S. capsized in stormy seas near San Diego, leaving at least four people dead and four hospitalized, the Coast Guard said Saturday. The U.S. Border Patrol found the vessel in the surf off Imperial Beach late Friday night. Six people were found on the beach just before midnight, one of whom was pronounced dead and another who was rescued after being found under the boat. About two hours later, authorities received a report of someone in the water near Imperial Beach Pier. A Coast Guard crew responded and found three people in the ocean, all dead. The Coast Guard said Saturday that it was continuing to search for others who may have been on board. Several of the survivors claimed Mexican nationality, while others remained unidentified, the agency said. One person was turned over to the Department of Homeland Security. “Our crews and partner agencies responded immediately, but this case demonstrates the severe risks posed to aliens attempting to enter the United States by sea in unstable vessels,” said Coast Guard Capt. Robert Tucker, Sector San Diego commander. A strong storm system hit Southern California over the weekend, prompting warnings of flash flooding and mudslides. The vessel was a panga — single- or twin-engine open fishing boat that is also commonly used by smugglers. Migrants are increasingly turning to the risky alternative offered by smugglers to travel by sea to avoid heavily guarded land borders, including off California’s coast. Pangas leave Mexico in the dead of night and sometimes chart hundreds of miles (kilometers) north. There have been several incidents in recent years of migrant vessels capsizing en route to California. In May, at least three people died when a panga flipped off the coast about 35 miles (56 km) north of the U.S.-Mexico border. In 2023, eight people were killed when two migrant smuggling boats approached a San Diego beach in heavy fog and one of them capsized in the surf. It was one of the deadliest maritime smuggling incidents in waters off the U.S. coast. A federal judge sentenced a San Diego man to 18 years in prison in 2022 for piloting a small vessel overloaded with 32 migrants that smashed apart in powerful surf off the coast, killing three people and injuring more than two dozen. Worldwide, nearly 9,000 people died last year attempting to cross borders, according to the U.N. agency for migration. The death toll set a record for the fifth year in a row. The U.N. Missing Migrant Project puts the number of dead and missing in the central Mediterranean at over 24,506 between 2014 and 2024, many of them lost at sea. The project says the number may be greater as many deaths go unrecorded.
