The diversity of skills, life experiences, and perspectives within our team enhances the way we work and our ability to succeed together.About The RoleThe Conveyor Belt Specialist is responsible for overseeing and assuring the quality, safety, and performance of conveyor belt maintenance services delivered by the belt maintenance contractor. This includes oversight of installation, splicing, repairs, replacements, and condition monitoring activities.is executed safely, efficiently, and to site standards.This role also provides technical leadership, coordination, and governance across the contractor’s expatriate and national workforce. The Conveyor Belt Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring safety compliance, verifying technical standards, and supporting local workforce development.Key ResponsibilitiesMonitor and verify that all contractor belt maintenance work is completed to specification, safely and efficiently. Provide assurance and technical input on belt splicing, vulcanisation, belt alignment, tensioning, pulley inspections, and idler replacements. Validate contractor reports, QA/QC records, splice documentation, and shutdown completion checklists.Support the development of preventive maintenance schedules and strategies to extend belt life and system reliability. Liaise with the OEM, Engineering, Maintenance, and Reliability teams to resolve complex technical issues and system faults. Ensure that maintenance methods and materials used meet technical and operational standards. Act as the key technical interface between Rio Tinto and the OEM belt maintenance contractor. Coordinate scope, shutdown planning, task sequencing, and site access in line with operational priorities. Monitor contractor performance against agreed KPIs (e.g., safety, quality, schedule, equipment availability). Encourage and support the upskilling of national contractor personnel through coaching, audits, and feedback. Ensure the contractor adheres to all site safety policies, site procedures, and regulatory requirements. Provide visible safety leadership and support the implementation of critical control verifications for conveyor-related risks. Participate in risk assessments, pre-start reviews, and work permit reviews for belt maintenance activities. Monitor compliance with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space, working at heights, and isolation protocols. Qualifications & ExperienceCertificate III in Mechanical Fitting, Belt Splicing, or equivalent trade qualification. Significant experience in conveyor belt maintenance within mining, quarrying, or heavy industry environments. Demonstrated experience supervising or coordinating contractor teams in high-risk, remote or FIFO sites. Strong technical understanding of splicing methods (hot and cold vulcanisation), QA/QC practices, and belt repair standards. Proficient in interpreting technical drawings, belt layouts, and condition monitoring data. Solid understanding of mine site safety systems, risk controls, and contractor management processes. Familiarity with predictive maintenance tools (e.g., thermal imaging, vibration analysis, ultrasound). Experience working in remote or FIFO mining operations, preferably within the international mining industry. Fluency in English required, proficiency in French is an advantage.
