Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. We also partner with the New Ireland Province to ensure economic benefits flow directly to the community, strengthening our commitment to sustainable development and positive local impact.PurposeThe Engineer – Drill & Blast will plan drilling and blasting activities to ensure safety, efficiency, and alignment with production goals.Essential DutiesCreate and refine blast designs, including blast hole patterns, charge weights, and timing sequences, to achieve desired fragmentation while minimizing ground vibration, air blast, and fly rock.Collaborate with geologists, mining engineers, and production teams to integrate drill and blast plans into the overall mine plan and ensure alignment with production targets.Prepare and maintain all necessary documentation and permits required for blasting operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory and company standards.Monitor drilling accuracy and blast execution to ensure compliance with design specifications, making adjustments as necessary to improve performance.Conduct post-blast assessments to evaluate blast performance, including fragmentation analysis and the identification of any misfires or anomalies.Ensure all drilling and blasting activities adhere to strict safety protocols and procedures, promoting a culture of safety and compliance among all team members.Training & ExperienceA tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering or a related discipline.An understanding of open cut mining operations.An understanding of mine safety systems and regulations.Proven ability to recognise, assess and manage risk.Demonstrated use of Drill and Blast Design software (Vulcan and Blast Logic) and mine design software.Valid manual drivers licenceStrong verbal and written communication skills.Working ConditionsAt Newmont, our commitment to diversity and inclusion ensures that everyone can work to their full potential, free from discrimination, while respecting the cultures, religions, and governance of the regions in which we operate.
