Pre-Construction Manager

The RoleYou will be driving pre-construction activities for our distributed generation projects, which typically include solar, natural gas generation, and energy storage resources. This hybrid role reports to our Sr. Director of Project Engineering and Preconstruction, and will be based out of either our Oakland or Santa Monica, CA offices. You can expect to travel within the primary area of operation.Key responsibilities will include:Drive pre-construction activities, including take-offs, bid solicitation, bid review, subcontractor negotiations, and building final project budgetsLiaison between the business development, engineering, and project management teams to ensure internal stakeholders are aligned throughout the pre-construction phase of each projectGrow Scale’s existing partner base by building relationships with new and existing contractors and vendorsReceive and levelize bids (pricing) from all subcontractors and compare to internally developed costs on the opportunity to dateDrive material procurement across multiple projects with a focus on meeting schedule deadlines and staying within budgetProduce detailed and accurate scopes of work to aid in contractor pricing. Ensure internal and external stakeholder requirements are captured in the scopeUtilize industry knowledge and experience to develop early-stage project budgets based on the conceptual scopePrioritize and execute budget development, contractor pricing, and material procurement for multiple projects in various geographic locations simultaneouslyCoordinate equipment procurement strategy with procurement team and EPC contractorSource updates on material pricing and labor ratesPrice out multiple scenarios for portfolio projects within a short time framePerform site visitsFor you to be successful in the role, you should have:5+ years of experience in Construction Management, general contracting, logistics, engineering, or the energy industry, with an emphasis on budgeting, cost estimating, and procurementProven ability to build and maintain relationships with equipment vendors and contractors, specifically in the electrical construction and distributed energy fieldKnowledge of building codes and regulationsExcellent communication and customer service skillsCritical thinking and creative problem-solving skillsHave the initiative to work autonomously and be comfortable representing SMS in customer-facing situationsA bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field is preferredStrong Microsoft Excel and Office Suite tools skillsThis is a great opportunity to have a long-term impact on a fast-paced, private equity backed growth business.
