The Cluster of Excellence “Climate, Climatic Change, and Society” (CLICCS II) investigates climate dynamics and climate-related social dynamics, as well as the interactions between the two; S3 – Varieties of Climate Agency (details: https://www.cliccs.uni-hamburg.de/about-cliccs/cliccs-ll.html ). Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications. They may also pursue doctoral studies outside of working duties.We are seeking a highly motivated doctoral researcher to join our research team on Varieties of Climate Agency: constitution, dynamics, and effects. The project lays the foundation for a social science analysis on climate agency – i.e., the build-up of societal capacities to actively shape global climate futures through social mobilisations, legal action, grassroot innovations, media discourses or international negotiations among others. We develop conceptual approaches and methodological tools to map different types of agencies, identify institutional settings that enable or constrain them, and examine conditions of access to participation.The successful candidate willconduct the project case study on discursive agency, and conduct independent research on topics such as the media representation of change agents and climate-related advocacy networks in newsrooms and counter-information sites, in close cooperation with the research project Contested Climate Futures: Discursive Powerplay in the Media (S2).systematise research findings and develop conceptualisations for different types of climate agency;play a supporting role in contributing to and implementing project activities, including workshops, colloquia, and joint publications; andpresent research findings at specialist conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals, as well as in relevant policy formats, where appropriate.Your profileA university degree in a relevant field.You hold an excellent Masters’ degree in the social sciences (Sociology, Communication Studies, Political Science, or adjacent fields).You have a demonstrated interest in, and knowledge of, the advertised research field; initial academic publications are an advantage.Familiarity with, and initial experience of, qualitative research methods, including interviews, ethnographic observations, or discourse analysis, and automated content analysis of news articles are an advantage.You have excellent written and spoken English language skills and good German language skills.You are an excellent team player: Communication skills, team orientation and initiative are required.International research experience, networking skills, and experience working with interdisciplinary teams are desirable.We offerReliable remuneration based on wage agreementsContinuing education opportunitiesUniversity pensionsAttractive locationFlexible working hoursWork-life balance opportunitiesHealth management, EGYM WellpassEducational leave30 days of vacation per annumUniversität Hamburg—University of Excellence is one of the strongest research educational institutions in Germany.
