Job DescriptionJob Overview:The Senior Principal Structural Engineer is tasked with solving unique and complex problems that have a broad impact on the business. They must proactively identify and solve the most complex problems that impact the management and direction of the business. The Senior Principal Structural Engineer is considered a specialist in the field of Structural (Eng) and they offer a broad base of knowledge about the Engineering function. The Senior Principal Structural Engineer impacts the direction and resource allocation of programs and projects in their discipline and works within general functional policies and industry guidelines. The Senior Principal Structural Engineer role requires conceptual and innovative thinking to develop creative solutions to Structural (Eng) challenges.ResponsibilitiesKey Tasks and Responsibilities:Perform conceptual, FEED, and detailed analyses and design as per design basis, project specifications, design codes, and standardsApply in-depth skills and broad knowledge of the business to address complex problems and nonstandard situationsPrepare clear and accurate detailed design calculations and analyses including design reports and - proceduresManage own time to meet objectives and (as Lead Engineer) forecast and plan resource requirementsCommunicate and explain difficult concepts and persuade others to adopt a point of viewWhen acting as Lead Engineer, in addition:Direct medium or large Engineering team as a Lead EngineerLead the Discipline engineering design of the assigned work area and complete it within the planned schedule and budget, by standards, MDR, and project-specific procedures and to a high professional standardPlan, organize, and direct all aspects of Discipline execution on the assigned project including scope, deliverables, schedule, and all manpower resources - agree allocations with the Discipline ManagerEnsure interfaces and deliverables are identifiedMaintain responsibility for progress and productivity, identifying any required corrective actionAct as project representative for Discipline during meetings with the Project TeamCustomer discipline lead and relevant agencies such as certifying authorities, auditors, third parties, etc.Train/mentor other employees in the departmentAssist and monitor MOPEX offices on projectsHas a good understanding of the other engineering departmentsInitiate interface with other disciplines to obtain input for discipline designsHas a good understanding of construction/fabrication yard and client requirementsHas commercial insightHelp maintain UnifiPrepare bid from sketching data, using experienceSupervise engineers and designersDefine scopes of work for engineering/construction fabrication yardProvide engineering support as requiredPerform engineering checks of draftingPerform engineering checks prepared by others within the disciplinePerform design verification through single discipline check and assist with inter-discipline checks (IDC)Prepare MTOs of structuresPrepare specificationsPrepare subcontractReview of vendor dataPrepare technical bid evaluationsAssist in furthering the departmentTasks as Engineering Specialist:Coordinate and check the work of senior and junior engineersConduct peer reviews on requestProvide technical assistance where requiredPrepare structural analyses and reports on calculations or perform specialist tasks (i.e., architectural designs, underground piping designs, complex structures, topsides, jackets, weight control reports, the center of gravity reports)Specialize in several fields (geotechnical, steel, concrete, dynamic calculations, FEM, fatigue calculations, earthquake, jackets, FPSOs, blast, hydrodynamics, architectural, …)Is specialized in several design codes (EC, ACI/AISC/API, GOST, …)Check designs for operational requirements, constructability, and maintainabilityPrepare project engineering guidesTasks as Lead Engineer:Work as Lead Engineer on medium to large-size EPC projectsResponsible for all engineering and design work on any projectHas full control and manages work hours, materials, progressWork in close liaison with the Design CoordinatorSet up all engineering computer systemsAssist Project Manager in:Preparing deliverable controlPreparing schedulePreparing progress reportsPreparing man-hour and capital expenditure estimatesCoordinate with project managementTrain personnel under their supervisionResponsible for discipline within the engineering groupManage (design) subcontractsIdentify and manage changes in the scope of workResponsible for filing engineering workGive relevant feedback to the departmentReports to: Lead Engineer, Project Engineering Manager, or Project Manager or Supervising Department ManagerLiaise with: All Engineering disciplines, Construction site/Fabrication Group, Safety Dept, Project Management Team,Document Control, Project Planner, Project Cost Controller, QC and Certification Group, Procurement Group, Subcontractorsand Vendors, and CustomersSupervises: Senior Engineers, Engineers and DesignersQualificationsEssential Qualifications and Education:Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in engineering20+ years of experience in oil and gas with a major contractor or consultants predominantly performing detail designPreferably Registered Professional Engineer or member of professional engineering society as applicable Seasoned knowledge of engineering standards and specificationsGood knowledge of engineering softwareAble to work independentlyGood working knowledge of English, both oral and writtenHSE, TQM, and cost-consciousGood technical structural knowledgeGood organizer, motivator, and supervisorKeen on improving the effectiveness of the workShow flexibility and ensure proper hand-over with regards to:The reassignment to other departments/construction sites/fabrication yardsThe replacement of colleagues during illness and holidaysThe provision of assistance to other colleagues with heavy workloads (also other projects) when possible/desirableThe managing/learning of current working methods and software applicationsThe reassignment to other McDermott offices About UsOur ingenuity fuels daily life.
